PLYMOUTH: BRITAIN’S OCEAN CITY 52 towns and cities worldwide share its name, but the Plymouth residing on the south coast of England is mother to them all. The largest port city on the south coast, Plymouth is steeped in Britain’s proud maritime history. The natural heart of Plymouth is the area known as ‘The Hoe’, providing stunning views over Plymouth sound, one of the most perfect examples of a natural harbour in the world. This area is home to the iconic Smeaton’s Tower Lighthouse and the Tinside Lido, a gorgeous art deco swimming spot voted one of the top 10 best outdoor pools in Europe. Whilst wandering the cobbled streets there is a high chance of viewing some of Plymouth’s heritage listed buildings, after all there are 750 in the city. Over 100 of them can be found in the Barbican area alone! It’s undeniable that the ocean is a major feature of the city, but direct your attention landward and you will find that over 40% of Plymouth is greenspace, with 100+ hectares of wildflower meadows spread across 40 sites.
“ Plymouth is the best place to live in the country in terms of good schools, clean air, value and quality of housing and access to sparkling sea…” The Guardian - 2013

A CITY WITH VISION During World War II large sections of the city centre were destroyed, but Plymouths tight knit community saw this as an opportunity to improve and rebuild the city that they love. Once again the people of Plymouth have banded together to propose a regeneration scheme known as ‘A Vision For Plymouth’, The scale of which is second only to that of the post war period. Launched in 2003 ‘A Vision For Plymouth’ proposed a £266 Million regeneration project, delivering the highest possible quality buildings and public spaces the likes of which attract and sustain the successful business, education, living, and recreation opportunities for citizens, investors, and visitors alike. This exciting undertaking is aiming to make this vision a reality by 2020. Today that vision is already reality! Residents are enjoying a flourishing community where the grand old once derelict buildings are now alive with cafes, bars, restaurants, museums, art galleries, offices and residential spaces. Plymouth is quickly establishing itself as a shopping hotspot, in fact it is now the second largest shopping region in the south west. In October 2006 the £170 Million Drake Circus shopping mall opened its doors, 10 years on and Drake Circus has welcomed over 176 Million shoppers, contributed over £1.3 Billion to the Plymouth economy, whilst creating 1,750 jobs in the process.
“ There is a buzz about Plymouth at the moment - and it is not just the hum of machinery on building sites. People stop each other in the street to talk about the changes they see around them. They are no longer on the sidelines and their interest in their own city has been revived. The vision requires much work and its delivery I am pleased to say has already started.” Councillor Tudor Evans - Leader of Plymouth City Council

PLYMOUTH UNIVERSITY Originally founded in 1862 as a School of Navigation, the University of Plymouth has constantly built upon its deep roots. The University is now ranked among the highest education institutions in the world, with The Times Higher Education ranking the University of Plymouth 4th in the UK and 59th globally. In 2012, the University of Plymouth chose to make the most of its costal setting opening the £19 million Marine Building, which houses some of the country’s most advanced wave tanks, and provides crucial testing facilities for the development of marine renewable energy technology. It was fitting that such a facility should be opened on the 150th anniversary of Dr Merrifield’s founding of the School of Navigation, and coincided with the award of that second Queen’s Anniversary Prize. Since 2012 the University of Plymouth has seen even more growth with the construction of a £7 million performing arts centre; a stunning £5 million waterfront teaching, research and scientific diving station; new research laboratories at the Derriford campus; and investment in a new student health and wellbeing centre. The University has a strong reputation for sustainability, particularly for the way it has embedded it into the curriculum. From several hundred students to the over 23,000 enrolled today – and with more than 100,000 alumni in more than 100 countries, Plymouth has become one of the largest and most influential universities in the UK, with research and teaching that positively impacts cultures and economies across the globe.

PLYMOUTH COLLEGE OF ART Some people say that true craftsmanship can no longer be found in today’s flat-pack pre-fab world, but Plymouth College of Art begs to differ. The college has struck a balance of analogue vs. digital creative courses teaching the likes of ceramics, printing, and glasswork alongside the more modern computer based graphic design, video games, and digital photography and film making. Demonstrating their commitment to the melding of traditional and modern creative disciplines Plymouth College of Art have invested almost £8 million into a new specialist art, craft and digital design centre. These state-of-the-art ceramics, glass and digital design workshops were officially opened by Sir John Sorrell in 2014. The college has proven to be a major catalyst in redefining the culture of Plymouth and the entire South West region, By providing an innovative and supportive learning community in contemporary arts practice, and developing the colleges’ distinctive profile of their work nationally and internationally, this cultural shift has positively affected the social and economic life of the entire city.
“ You are creating something which doesn’t exist anywhere else – this is the first school based in the creative arts sponsored by an art college anywhere in the country… I hope that Plymouth will get the credit when it’s copied all over the United Kingdom.” Sir Nicholas Serota - Director of Tate
