Module 1 How to Draw a Croissant

The first module is to develop techniques in drawing through the practice of drawing the top view and elevation of croissants. A touch of isometric drawing is also involved by combining the drawings of each cut sections. Photos and drawings are composed at 1 to 1 scale with measured dimensions. In order to draw a croissant, the first step is to photograph my cute and unique croissant. Photos of top view and two elevations are taken on a photo stage where white background and two lights set up. Next, cut the croissant into three parts and scan the sections. With these images in hand, I am ready to draw my croissant.

3

Overlaying tracing paper over these photos and scanned images, I first outline each of the cutline with 0.5 fine line pen. Trace a second time by applying hatching with 0.1 fine line pen to show texture and value. Another tracing paper is used for shading. I use pencils of 2B, 4B and 6B to create different hardness grading. Scan all of these tracings separately and multiply them in the Photoshop to form the complete drawing.

4

Overlay tracing paper over section drawings and draw a grid. Mark the intersections between the grid and the cutline. This is then transferred onto a 45-degree coordinate. Follow the shape and connect the three parts to complete the final axonometric drawing.

M1 Reflection Overall, the depth shown is not so strong and the drawings are a bit flat. This should be improved by improving linework, shading and hatching. Especially for shading part, it is essential to apply different pencils of hardness properly. Axonometric drawing needs to be cleaned up better and more accurate.

Module 2 Flatness V.S. Projection

NEW MARIO WORLD

Module 2 is based on the game of “Mario Two elevations given from the game are flat and this module aims to create a coherent 3D perspective by using axonometric drawing skill which we had a touch in Module 1.

Axonometric drawing of New Mario World is using the provided elevation images as the front image and rear image and rotating them at 45 degrees to achieve the 3D presentation. The hidden space between the front and the rear one is then imagined and created after showing the depth of the two elevations. 7

My idea was to create a park of ice. In my original work, I tried to add elements like roller coaster and designed its way across the upper and under world. Other relevant elements including swimming pool, exercising equipment, water slides were also added. However, intending to create a “rich“ image full of all sorts of elements. too much time has been spent to hand drawing. Nevertheless, when I was doing this drawing, T-square was not in use every time, which led lines to be not vertical. Moreover, axonometric drawing of water wheel and the roller coaster are wrong. Also. the image contains too much information which made the image seem to be messy.

Front drawing. this is the front drawing of the mario world using axonometric way.

Axonometric drawing. this is the whole axonometric drawing of the mario world. Using T-square and rulers to adjust angles.

Modification. those unparalled or vertical and horizaontal lines have been redrew to avoid tracing problems in Illustrator. The axonometric drawing of the waterwheel were modified and another layer was added to make it look more of 3D.

Modified axonometric drawing.

Modified world.

Previous world. When using illustrator to colour the image, there was a lack of digital skill as the colour used for each surface were all the same without using tools such as gradient tool and the colour used for different sides of one object didn’t show enough contrast and depth. Moreover, the lack of base also needed to improve. Overall, images were too flat and 3D effect was not achieved.

The modified work leaves out the roller coaster and changed the complicated under world into a simple reservoir. The redrawing of the water wheel makes it more of an axonometric way and the wheels have been doubled to make it less flat. Efforts of the modified work have been put into choice of colour and digital skill of illustrator. Gradient tool is extensively used to indicate depth, shadow and light. The whole image is simpler yet more vivid.

Module 3 Pattern V.S. Surface

PAPER LANDSCAPE

From digital modelling to hand making, module 3 gave me an idea of the process of fabrication. Based on the terrain given, we were expected to create panels using panelling tools in Rhino to show the typology of the specific terrain. I used 3D panelling tool and created a flower pattern by combining four main types of modules from different sizes of openings to closed, pointed modules. The typology was showed by using the commands such as” point attractors” and “offset points” during the process of making 3D panelling.

12

Based on the given terrain, I used Rhino to create this digital model.

This model consists with four kinds of modules with different sizes so as to show the changing of the height and to form a flower pattern.

After the digital model was completed, unrolling those single modules and creating tabs for each of them was the next step.

It is important to make 2D so that these can be exported for cutting. Laser cut is more accurate and time-saving, and they were cut on 160gsm Ivory Card.

13

Referring back to the previous digital module, I folded the cut strips and sticked them together. The typology was automatically shaped and this was how I created my model digitally and manually.

Module 4 Frame V.S. Field

INVISIBLE CITY

Anastasia Module 4 involves skills both in Photoshop and Rhino. Based on the story given from Italo Calvino’s book “Invisible City”, I tried to interpret this story and think of ways to present the essence of this story in one isometric drawing and two perspectives. The isometric drawing shows the movement, speed, mood of Marco Polo when he was travelling around this city and some annotations were placed to help present this city in detail. Anastasia is a city of desire. It awakens all your desire as it is set to have whatever fabulous things you wanted. As you think you are devoting your effort and approaching your desire, it finally turned out that all you would be achieving was gone and nothing while it was this city that had this kind of power to lure, to make you feel content, yet to stifle your desire. You, have nothing but become the slave of this city, of your own desire.

Perspective 1 This view gives a broad perspective showing the wideness and depth. From Marco Polo’s perspective, he could have a first overall impression of this city.

Perspective 2 In contrast, this is a close view showing one corner of the city. This perspective allows Marco Polo to have a close observation of what is happening in front ot his eyes and the expression of these figures and some details can be clearly shown to tell the story.

17

Perspective 1 The first perspective scene tries to depict a city of desire. Upon entering the city, Marco Polo saw a group of people on the sea. The man is surrounded by these women who awaken his desire and this desire is all around him. While he thinks he inhabits the desire and feels content, the outside view of the waves on the left implies unexpections.

18

Perspective 2 Marco Polo then traveled to the future of this city where he saw the city’s real essence. The man whose desire was awaken in the first scene is handcuffed against the column, so is the woman on the horse which is a symbolism of his desire. This implies that he can never really have what he has desired for as they are restricted and cannot reach each other. These women finally turn out to be malignant mermaids that seduced the man and awaken his desire but eventually stifle it. The bird with a human’s head on the man’s shoulder is an embodiment of this man. He is looking out to sea, to the lighthouse, hoping to escape from this city. However, he is part of the city, part of the desire and this desire has already restricted him.

REFLECTION Lectures are helpful in providing the overall contexts for these modules and have taught me some basic concepts and knowledge in terms of perspective and axonometric, flatness and projection, developable surface and frame. I’ve gained drawing skills and digital skills a lot as I knew nothing about Adobe stuff at the very beginning. It is rewarding that I’ve learnt the basic stuff about these digital applications throughout this semester. For example, layer masking tool, stamp tool, eye drop tool are really helpful and the experience of using and learning them is quite enjoyable. Rhino is also the application that I have a touch at the first time. 3D paneling tool is new but not hard to learn for module 3. Looking back, it was tough at the beginning and during the process of each of these projects, but it is not that difficult while really interesting as I see now. I feel like I’ve come to the new designing field and I also realize that I have a long way to go. Module 2 was quite tough for me at the beginning as a result of bad time management. At last I run out of time for digital part. Though I have made amendments to module 2 in the final portfolio, I am still not content about it as the modified drawing is a little bit simple compared to the first one. Although digital skills have been improved, the image has become plain which doesn’t essentially show the Mario World. I think I could still improve by adding more objects or elements and using more tools in illustrator to make it more real. (Changes: M2; axonometric drawing of M4)
