Stadium Mrt Station

An Infrastructural Marvel

INTRODUCTION The definition of atmosphere in an architectural sense refers to the sensorial qualities of a space and emotions invoked by the space. The Building I choose is Stadium MRT station and the atmosphere of the station is that it has this sense of awe from the huge scale of the station and freedom from the open bright airy nature of the station. But there is still this sense of order and peace from the obvious linear design. Stadium MRT station is part of the circle line system, located beside Singapore sports hub. According to the WOHA team that designed this, the design is inspired by European train stations of the nineteenth century and is meant to give passengers an exciting architectural experience. 1 It is expected to be crowded when an important event is held at the nearby sports hub. Therefore, the station is designed to channel passengers quickly in and out of the station and combat any problems that typically happen in crowded stations like poor air circulation, heat and over reliance on costly electrical lighting. Figure 2. View of the skylight and aluminum louvers from the platform

ALIGHTING As passengers alight from the train and step out onto the platform, they heave a sigh of relief and calmness as they exit the packed trains into the airy open platform. At the ceiling, a glass cladded roof effortlessly float above the massive throngs of people , letting much of the life giving sunlight and air into the station, creating a comfortable environment, no matter how crowded the station may be. There are two facades next to each other, with the curved faรงade that seems to disrupt the perfect cuboid space the station could have been. The curved faรงade also seem to invade into the flat facade, creating a tense environment, becoming the hallmark of the station. The facades are lined with horizontal louvres that appears to blend together towards the ceiling, creating the sense of deepness in a station. The horizontal aluminium louvres also help to accentuate the linear form of the station and adds to sense of motion to the design of the station. During different times of the day, the shadow casted by the glass framed roof would sometimes on the flat faรงade, creating different patterns during the day, making an ever changing organic scene in the station, similar to the different crowds passing through the station. The appearance of the horizontal aluminium louvres are custom designed to

create an ambiguous material, sometimes like a soft fabric, sometimes like hard 2 stone and sometimes becoming true to itself, metallic. Therefore, the horizontal aluminium louvres also contribute to the ever changing organic aspect of the station.

Figure 3. View of the train at with the patterned light feature

The platform doors are topped with a patterned light feature, with trapezium light filled boxes and planes interlocked with each other, creating a rather interesting and active façade, mirroring the rushing crowds of people exiting the train. The colourful shiny floor tiles, made of green and blue trapezium tiles and black strips, seem to draw inspiration from the nearby Kallang River.

EXITING

Figure 4. View of one of the exits with silhouettes of sport figures

The exits are also in a linear form with the platform in order to maximise the flow of passengers from the platform to the surface. Coming up on the escalator, passengers can see the piercing light from the other side of the exit, again highlighting the linear quality of the station. The exit is covered with a glass faรงade, with silhouettes of sport figures on the glass, hinting that the sport events are nearby.

21

OUTSIDE

Figure 5. View shows exterior of one of the exits.

Figure 6. View shows exterior length of station

After tapping out at the fare gate, passengers enter in an open air concourse, a huge space for people to mill around. The exit of the station is made of two monolithic retaining walls, which looks firm and assuring to passengers that it will not cave inwards when they are underground. The walls are topped off with a thin roof that seems to float in mid-air as one edge is suspended only with thin beams. The exterior of a station is a linear rectangular like form, with one curved side that extends from the curved faรงade underground. Walking along side of the exterior length of the station, passengers can see the platform from the ground level plaza.

22

ENTERING Just after tapping in at the station entrance, the escalators dramatizes the deepness of the station as it curves downwards. The curved and flat facades also easily represent which platform is which and this makes it easy for passengers to know which platform to board without having to crowd around the signs.

THOUGHTS & CONCLUSION

After thoroughly looking at the design, the design manages to be functional and be aesthetically pleasing as well. The design manages to efficiently direct the crowds in and out of the station with a linear design and reduces any poor circulation of air and heat issues with a wide open space. The skylight not only reduces electrical costs, it also creates a welcoming ambience by allowing daylight in. The asymmetrical underground space with the curved faรงade makes an interesting design choice, distancing itself from the typical cuboid space of other underground stations. The aluminium louvres also help to exaggerate the linear form of the underground space. The aluminium louvres suggest rapid movement but in an orderly fashion as well. This design manages to combine two opposing qualities at once, order from the basic linear form and fluidity from the changing light and shadow effects in the station.
