Digital Design - Module 01 Semester 1, 2018 Yiru Zhang 864046 Han Li 17
Week One
Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.
According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)
Diagrams shows the specific process of the event. Even though diagrams are not as detailed as representative drawings, as they will not show the complete information, diagrams can still be powerful tools in architectural design. Signs and symbols usually only show a specific part of the whole process whils diagrams can illustrate the progress of flow paths.

Precedent Analysis

Section view of pavilion( image above) Trace the section view provided to get a part of 3D model. Then copy and paste it to get the whole model.

Week Two
Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discuss how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)
Zumthor’s pavilion had three doors on the external walls respectively, and two doors on the internal walls respectively. This allows people to move freely in the pavilion. Meanwhile, the space under the roof around the internal garden allows visitors to communicate and meet each other, it’s a relaxing communal space contains simple furniture like chairs and tables, which suits perfectly to its function. The space between external walls and internal walls were covered by roof. It shows a function of privacy and allow people to stay and have a rest by their own.

Week Two
Isometric
Peter Zumthor-Serpentine Pavilion 2011.Isometric from south west The overall exterior roof, ground and the exterior wall are shown in the isometric view while structural details are also constructed inside(stud, noggings, etc.) The threshold is the in-between space between commual area and the private area, which is complex in this project as the pavilion also had a internal garden, so the space are divided to different parts and can be entered by different entrance. As a result, the circulation paths are also hard to be defined because people can mostly move freely within the pavilion.

Week Two Diagrams
Threshold Diagram
Circulation Diagram
The space within the pavilion can be devided into two parts by the external and the internal walls.
The circulation paths of people moving within the building are shown in diagram above.
