For this semester I learned from Peter Zumthor’s design the most, as he was the designe for my precedent study in Module one. He was an architect who did great work on threshold, light and shadow effects. His design gave me an idea that even the form or structure of the building is not that complecated, the designer could still create better threshold and atmostphere, and maximise the user’s experience. And that’s what I want to achieve in my design.
Skills:
Although I tried to learn more from other architects and designers
Rhino Grasshopper
for this semester, my own use of these knowledges still need more practice and experience. I still need to make my design more relate to its function and take more time on understanding requirement for the tasks. Also my skill for using parametric softwires still need to improve in order to express my intention in a better way.

Diagramming Design Precedent
The Serpentine Pavilion designed by Peter Zumthor was a great example for a building that in a perfect square shape to have complex circulation. One of the most interesting point for this design was that it brought in a garden inside the building. The structure and the form of the building was relatively simple, but the architect used multiple doors, internal garden and the dark walkway to create multiple threshold and circulation. The design gives the idea that good architecture does not only means complex form or gorgeous appearance, but also consider how people could occupy the space.

Use 6 outter doors and 4 inner doors to achieve maximum circulation. The amount of people flow would change according to site and the direction building.
Using internal and external walls to make a threshold between inside and outside the building. The roof extened to the garden area allows more communication space for users.

Using solid stucture at one surface and open surface at the other side creates better threshold between exterior and interior. Also it gives a feeling of stable and safe.
Panels are larger at the bottom and decrease in size towards the top of the volume which gives a feeling of stable and safe.

The cubic overall form was inspired by Peter Zumthor ‘s Serpentine Pavilion. I tried to take the voids in different sizes to increase diversity in the structure, and increase its function as an architecture from the scale of 1:50.

M3 - Spiral Pavilion
The upper level could be used as a stage for the band performance while stairs could be spaces for people who want to see the performance.
Steps allow people to seat in daytime and could be used as audience space for concert.
The wooden material used for seatings makes it feel warmer.

PROJECT TITLE

The step down creates a threshold helping to differentiate the landscape from the pavilion itself, leading up to decking and entrance.
The decking is made of glass on top and metal for structure(generated by Grasshopper). The material’s reflection of sky and its transparency makes people closer to the natural environment. The edge of decking could be used as seatings.
Isometric
My design concept is to use a simple cylinder structure to create more circulation and threshold of the building. The panels are to increase its light effects, use white concrete as its material in order to reflect more color from the light. The seminar could be held inside the building as there would be cover from the top and the space can contain 15 people to seat loosely. The band for the concert at night could stand on top of the overall structure, people could stand around the pavilion or on the stair to listen to the band. The pavilion has 2 main entrance and the stair could be used as a pathway to the upper storey as well as seating.
18
Design Iteration
Generate from curved surfaces. The design contains 4 entrances, and the roof could be used as performance space.
Use spiral surfaces to create a complex structure with multiple entrance and light effects. But it is too complex to finalise all the details and doesn’t fit the function of the pavilion.
19
Use spiral form as a general idea. the internal space was to used as a lecture space, the structure had two storeys and the upper storey could be covered by a spiral roof on top of it. But the structure’s circulation was too simple and too enclosed.

Use a circle as the basement to do further development. Devide the circle and use the midpoint of the curves as centers to the colomns.
Use series of commands to create a spiral stair around the structure. The height could be adjust by different parametrics.
23
Use voronoi command to create the support for the base decking. The panals are created by 3D pannelling tools.
Fabrication process
Use 3 different materials- mount board for waffle and ground, clear perspex for decking glass and column and plywood for decking support. The 3D panel was made by 3D print.
