Project 5 Iterative-Illustrations
from Road to Design
by Yishu Li
This assignment is a mixed project where we need to prepare different types of works to showcase an animal. This is a difficult process, especially when I don't understand a certain technology, my thoughts and paintings become very funny and strange. Finally, we need to showcase our finished product in InDesign. In order to start this work, we need to do a lot of learning. Not only do we need to learn the form of wolves in their natural state, choose artists we like to imitate, but we also need to collect different materials.

This is the first “master” artist iterations, the artist is Wayne White, his artistic style is to use huge artistic characters to express the theme of a landscape painting. When making this painting, I used online landscape paintings as background materials, drew the silhouette of the wolf in Photoshop, and combined them together.
This is the second “master” artist iterations, the artist is Lisa Yuskavage, her artistic style is somewhat abstract, using very thick strokes to depict edges, with materials similar to colored pencils and crayons, and she likes to highlight joints when drawing characters.
I used a colored pencil to draw this picture and tried to draw the background to make the picture less monotonous.
This is the typographic collage iteration. We need to collect black and white text and then collage it into the shape of a wolf.

In this section, I used card carving techniques to stack different parts layer by layer. I also use different shades of background and white text on a black background to represent dark shadows.

This is the collage iterations, in this work we need to use cut shapes from different paper to show the wolf.
I tried to use a picture of flowers to create a wolf to represent nature, but unfortunately, due to the size limitation of the original picture, I used Photoshop to adjust it to make it look more like a wolf. The background uses a gradient effect.
This is the geometric iterations, in this work we need to use different geometric to show wolf.

I did not use painting, but instead used origami, which naturally produces a combination of different geometric shapes. I learned the folding method of the howling wolf on the internet and also used gradient to draw a circular background to show the moon.
This is the continuous line iterations, in this work we need to use only one line to draw the wolf. This assignment requires multiple attempts and practice, and in the end, I chose to depict the shape of a wolf crawling on a stone with its side head. To increase the overall contrast of the poster, I also used Photoshop to convert the lines into pure white and used a black background.

Another very important part of this assignment is typesetting. In addition to the final draft, I also designed two different versions, all of which were eliminated due to various shortcomings.
