Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring Cardiology What is Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring?

3. Continue with your current medication.

An Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring test measures and records your blood pressure in a portable recorder, over a period of 20 to 24 hours.

How is the test done?

This allows correlation of the blood pressure to the psychological state and level of activity of a person throughout the recording period.

The medical technologist will attach a blood pressure cuff to one of your arms which is connected to portable recorder. The blood pressure cuff will inflate at pre-set intervals throughout a 24-hour period. During this period, you are advised to continue with your normal activities, apart from strenuous exercise. However, you must not attempt to remove the cuff unless otherwise instructed.

Preparation before the test 1. Shower before coming for the test. 2. Wear loose fitting clothes. Ladies are advised to come in a two-piece garment (e.g. blouse and skirt/pants)

For maximum accuracy, during cuff inflation and deflation, you should keep the arm as straight and relaxed as possible. The fixing of the device generally takes less than 30 minutes after which you can leave the hospital.

On your return the following day, the device will be removed and connected to the computer for data transfer and analysis. Is the test safe? There is generally no risk involved. However, some patients may experience some arm discomfort from contact with the blood pressure cuff during inflation and deflation.
