Bone Mineral Density Scan

What are Bone Mineral Density (BMD) scans?

Otherwise known as DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scans, BMD scans are most often used to diagnose osteoporosis (porous bone) where there is loss of bone tissue, causing bones to be brittle and more likely to break. It is recognised internationally as a standard of measuring bone strength or bone density.

The regions that will usually be scanned are the lower back bones and hips. Occasionally, the wrist bones will be scanned. These are the parts that most commonly break due to osteoporosis. The time taken for a BMD/DEXA scan is between 15-20 minutes.

What are the necessary preparations?

You should not have had a recent barium enema examination or have been injected with contrast during a special scan for example, CT Scan or Nuclear Medicine Scan. If you had any of the above, it is advisable to wait 10-14 days before proceeding with the scan.

There are no special preparations necessary. You may eat and drink as usual and continue with any medication.

Important information

Please do inform the radiographer if you have had any fractures/broken bones of your hip(s) and/or lumbar spine (lower back) as it will have a direct impact on the accuracy of your scan results.
