Mammography

What is mammography?

• Mammography is a special imaging of the breasts using a low-dose X-ray system. It allows for early detection of breast cancers.

Common uses of mammography

• Screening mammography is recommended every year for women aged 40-49 and once in every 2 years for women aged 50 and above. It is used to look for possible cancer when you are well and have no obvious breast symptoms.

• Diagnostic mammography is used when there is a breast symptom that you or your doctor may be concerned about, such as breast pain, a lump or discharge from the nipple.

Are there any risks involved?

• As this is a low radiation dose examination, the risk resulting from exposure to radiation is negligible and the benefits far outweigh the risk.

• Please inform the radiographer if you are pregnant or suspect that you may be pregnant before the start of the examination.

How should I prepare myself?

• Do not wear deodorant, talcum powder or lotion under your arms and on your chest area on the day of your examination.

• Bring your previous private mammography films/CD and reports if any, for comparison.

• For convenience, you are advised to wear a blouse with a skirt or slacks, instead of a dress.

How is the procedure performed?

• You will be asked a few questions on relevant medical history pertaining to the examination, which will take approximately 30 mins.

• Gentle but firm compression is applied on your breast to spread out the breast tissue. This is necessary for good visualisation and detection of any abnormality. The compression may cause some discomfort.

• A few images will be taken to complete the whole examination.

• Sometimes, additional views or an ultrasound scan of the breast may be needed.
