What is OesophagoGastro-Duodenoscopy (OGD)? Food pipe (Oesophagus)
Stomach Camera Upper small intestine (Duodenum)
An OGD is a test to examine the food pipe (oesophagus), stomach and upper part of the small intestine (duodenum). This helps your doctor find out why you are having health problems such as stomach pain and swallowing difficulties. How is an OGD done? A thin flexible tube is inserted into the mouth, down the throat and food pipe then into the stomach and upper part of the small intestine.
A tiny camera on the tip of the tube allows the doctor to see inside these body parts to look for health problems such as: • Ulcers • Bleeding • Growths • Inflammation Samples from ulcers and growths may be taken during the procedure to check for cancer or the bacteria H. pylori.
Common Questions What will happen during my visit?
What are the risks? An OGD is a safe procedure but complications can occasionally happen. It is important that you understand the risks before signing the consent form. Possible complications include: • Bleeding after tissue removal/ biopsy • Harmful reaction to the sedation drugs • Damage to the wall of the food pipe, stomach or upper small intestine (duodenum) needing surgery to repair • Death (very rare)
Will it hurt? It will not hurt as your throat will be sprayed with medicine to numb it. Most patients are sedated so they often do not feel or remember the procedure.
