Urinary Tract Infection What is a Urinary Tract Infection? A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that occurs in any part of the urinary system. The urinary system is made up of four parts: kidneys, ureters, bladder and the urethra. Male Kidney Ureter Bladder Urethra

Female Kidney Ureter Bladder Urethra

Who does it affect? • Men and women of all ages •

More common in women

People poor bladder control

What causes it? Infection happens when bacteria get into the urinary system. The most common cause is poor personal hygiene. The urethra is close to the anus (especially in women). Therefore, bacteria from the bowels can easily spread to the vagina and urethra if the anus is not cleaned carefully after passing motion.

What are the signs? • A strong urge to pass urine. • Pain or a burning sensation when urinating. • Passing frequent small amounts of urine or diff iculty in passing urine. • Cloudy, strong smelling or bloody urine. Why do UTIs need to be treated? • If not treated, infection in the urethra • or bladder can spread to the kidneys • causing kidney damage. How is it treated? • Antibiotics are usually given to kill the infection. The type of antibiotics ordered will depend on the type of bacteria that is causing the infection. • For severe urinary tract infection, you may need to be admitted to the hospital for treatment.

It is important to finish the whole course of antibiotics, even if you feel better.

What can I do ? • Drink plenty of water unless told otherwise by your doctor. • Always wipe from front to back after passing motion. This prevents bacteria from spreading from the anus to the vagina and urethra. • Do not hold your urine. Urinate when you feel the urge and empty the bladder fully. When should I see a doctor? See a doctor if you have: • Fever or pain when urinating. • There is no improvement aft er two days of taking antibiotics. • If you are unable to keep down food, fluid or medication due to vomiting or nausea. • Chills and shivering. • Bloody urine that does not clear up.
