Avoiding Falls after Amputation Why am I at risk of falling? Falls are common among amputees due to an altered sense of balance and feeling of the presence of the limb that has been removed (phantom sensation). You are more at risk of not being able to regain your balance if you slip or fall. What can I do to prevent a fall? • Take time to get ready before getting up or transferring to a chair. • Always apply the brakes on your wheelchair before transferring. • Minimise and remove any slippery surfaces at home if possible. • Use carpets with non-slip surfaces. Ensure they are well secured and in good condition. • Apply a non-slip coating to titles or laminate floors. • Wipe up any spills immediately.

Wear appropriate footwear with non-slip soles. Keep electrical cords fixed to skirting boards. Arrange furniture to keep your room uncluttered and the walkway clear. Improve lighting in the home with sensors or night lights in hallways, bathrooms and entrances. Get your eyes checked regularly and wear your prescribed glasses if any. Have your medications checked by a doctor if you feel dizzy
What home aids or equipment can improve safety? • Install hand rails in the bathroom, toilet and stairs. • Use shower chairs, bath-seats and raised toilet seats. • Place cordless or mobile phones within easy reach. • Use a high chair with arm rests to make it easier when standing up or sitting down. • Paint the edges of steps in a contrasting colour to make them easier to see. Your occupational therapist will advise you on home aids, equipment and home modifications to improve your safety.
What if I have a fall? It is important that you know how to get back up off the floor if you do have a fall. Your physiotherapist will show you ways of getting up off the floor as part of your rehabilitation programme. If you are having trouble with balance, your physiotherapist may be able to provide you with exercises that will improve your strength and balance. It is important to care for the limb that was operated on and your intact limb to prevent falls. If you have a fall and notice any changes to your health or limbs, contact your doctor immediately.
