What is Bariatric Surgery 1,2 ? Bariatric Surgery involves making changes to the digestive system to aid patients to lose weight. The most common Bariatric Surgical Procedure is the Sleeve Gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Bariatric Surgery is done to reduce the risk of life-threatening weight-related health problems like: Heart Disease/ Stroke, Hypertension, Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease/ Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis, Sleep apnea and Type 2 Diabetes.

What is a Bariatric Diet? Bariatric diet aims to facilitate healing & change in eating habit, of people, recovering from Bariatric Surgery, using a staged approach.3
How does Bariatric Diet work4 ? Helps to avoid side effects & complications from the surgery
Helps stomach to heal without being stretched by the food eaten. Helps patient getting used to smaller food quantity safely & comfortably. Helps patient to lose weight & avoid gaining weight. 4
Key Eating & Drinking Principles • Eat adequate PROTEIN to preserve lean muscle & promote wound healing. (refer to Protein Food List)
• Drink enough FLUIDS to keep body hydrated but SPACE it 30 minutes apart from eating.
• Eat & drink SLOWLY to prevent blockage & overeating.
• Avoid drinking using STRAW to avoid discomfort from air bubble.
• Avoid CARBONATED / FIZZY drinks to hinder gas build-up causing stomach discomfort.
• COSUME required Vitamin, Mineral & supplements to prevent deficiencies
• LISTEN to your body. Stop eating / drinking when you feel discomfort, tightness or pain in the stomach.
• Adopt LOW CALORIE DIET (low fat, low sugar) to maximize nutrient intake while losing weight.

Protein Food List Lean Meat/Chicken (30g) • 1 tbsp • 1 matchbox size • 1/3 palm size
Fish (30g) • ½ palm size • 1 small fish
Beancurd / Tofu • ½ square firm (60g) • ½ large block soft (150g)
Peanut Butter • 2tbsps (30g)
Milk / Soybean milk • 1 cup (200ml) • 4 tbsps milk powder (30g)
Egg (50g) • 1 whole egg • 2 egg white
Nuts and Seeds • ¼ cup (30g)
Yoghurt • 1 small tub (150g)
Shellfish (30g) • 4 medium prawns
Beans / Lentils • 2 tbsp, dry (30g) • 3 tbsp, cooked (90g)

Gadgets / Equipment Needed Tips: Try opting for baking instead of frying if possible Baking requires little to no oil as it uses the oil present in the food to cook itself.

Tips: Try steaming if you are intending to obtain a softer texture Steaming is a moist heat cooking method. It helps to retain the moisture inside the food.
