Ruptured Achilles Tendon Orthopaedic Achillies Tendon
The Achilles tendon is found at the back and above the heel. It helps in bending the foot downwards at the ankle. If it is torn (ruptured), any motion with the ankle such as walking, running, climbing stairs or standing on toes would be difficult.
Causes • Excessive activity or overuse • Jogging or running on hard surfaces • Injuries such as falls and cuts • Previous tendon injury • Tight muscles or tendons in the leg • Long-term steroid therapy or steroid injection that weaken Achilles tendon. Signs and symptoms • Pain • Tenderness • Swelling • Stiffness • Cannot stand on tiptoe • Walk like a flat-footed person, cannot push off the ground with toes properly • Snapping or popping sound may be heard
Diagnosis Your doctor will examine the foot and ankle, and then ask about the happenings before the symptoms. Diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, Ultrasound scan and/or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) may be ordered, as necessary.
Rehabilitation You will be recommended to go for physiotherapy. Physiotherapy such as stretching and range of joint motion may began as early as two weeks after the treatment. Your doctor and physiotherapist will help you accordingly.
Treatment See a doctor urgently if you suspect an Achilles tendon rupture because the tendon heals better if treated quicker. Your doctor will advise you on options for treatment. Surgery An operation is required to repair the tendon. After the operation, you will need to wear casts or brace for about 6-8 weeks to protect the tendon while it heals. Non-surgery (Conservative) You will be put on a plaster cast or brace on your affected leg for 6 to 8 weeks, for the tendon to heal naturally. You can consider to go for surgical repair later if the tendon does not heal well.
