Fundal Fluorescein and Indocyanine Green Angiography Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA) is a special photographic test to examine the inner layers of the eye. The test will help your doctor to diagnose and monitor your eye condition. Procedures are as follows: 1. To instill eye drop to enlarge (dilate) the pupils. 2. To obtain baseline photos with a fundus camera, and to scan with an imaging machine before injection of a yellow dye (fluorescein sodium). 3. To insert a small removable plastic tube into a vein to allow injection of the dye by the medical doctor. 4. A series of scans will be taken over 10 to 20 minutes with the imaging machine to examine the blood flow and dye leakage in your eyes.
The entire procedure may take about 2 hours to complete. Please follow the instructions given by the staff.
While FFA is a relatively safe procedure, you may sometimes experience mild side effects such as nausea, vomiting, itching, hives and excessive sneezing. After the test, you may notice yellow discoloration of the skin and urine. This is not harmful and will resolve in 2 to 3 days as the dye passes out of your body.
This compound contains iodine and may rarely cause allergic reaction in patients previously sensitive to other imaging dyes used in CT scans.
A small group of patients may require ICG Angiography, involving the injection of second dye (Indocyanine Green) to study a different set of blood vessels in the eye.
Approximately one in 20,000 patients develops a severe allergic response immediately after the injection of the dyes. Please inform the medical staff of your allergy history before the test.
Should you experience any significant side effects, please bring along this leaflet to seek care from your nearest General Practitioner Clinic or Emergency Department.
