EXPLANATIONS In general
Grades of the accidentals.
The LED-light on the fm-radio can be turned on with a button. Hold as long as the notes says.
The fm-radio can play soundfiles from an usb . Have the volume turned down before and push the button with the soundfile number. Turn the volume up. Whisper the text above the staff. The text is in Swedish but if you want to do an English version, contact the composer for a translation.
The light on the note stand. Turn on the light in a specific rhythm. The light is off before.
Use a dimmer for the note stand light and dim out.
Speak and make sounds without the instrument. The sounds are 'psch', 'ah' & 'sh'.
Each part ends with a free part where the notation is written in seconds.
Technique in general - 5 instruments are using a radio with led light & a possibility to play soundfiles from a usb stick: flute, clarinet and the string trio.
- In the last part of the piece the musicians are whispering. The fragmented text is picked from a poem by the Swedish poet Sara Falkstad.

Wind Play a bisbigliando in an accelerando.
Play accentuated air tones: breath tones.
Play air tones with soft character.
Blow on the keys of the instrument to get a friction sound.
Play frullato on a half air tone. The second tone is with a sound in the back of the throat.
1. Tongue ram 2. Slap tongue 3. Flautando
Change of timbre. Half air tone to air tone & back to half air tone.
Play whistle tones following the graphics.
Play fast using double tounguing.
Play a transmission in air sounds. Thereafter a slap tongue tone.
Different action first and second time in a repeat box. 1st time: rest 2nd time: bending a half air tone
Variation of techniques. Slap tongue & then vibrato.
CLARINET, special technique
Removing the mouthpiece from the clarinet and play on it.
Play harmonics while playing flutter tongue.
Play harmonics. High thin tone.
Play harmonics and change timbre with air tones.
The three lines are defining the range so keep track on the tones to know where to go.
Play harmonics and end with air tone. Whisper: 'skuggor'
Make a trill using the hand to cover and un-cover the opening.
Percussion Play with bow on the lampshade. The 1st picture without tone. The 2nd with a noisy tone.
Play with a finger (not nail) on the spring steels. You might need to hold on to the lamp stand with your other hand for making sure it doesn't move while playing.
Tap with finger on the lampshade.
Play with a stick on the lamp stand. For making the fast tones you might want to move the stick between to parts of the stand to make it jump faster.
Play with a steel brush in circles inside of the lampshade. Fast.
Play with a bow on the saucepan lid. Choose a lid with a good sound, interesting and with a long sustaining tone. Usually the best ones are with a curvy surface. If it is possible to remove the handle, you can play on the lid as a cymbal and even use that kind of stand for it.
Different ways of playing on the office lamp. Spring steels (with finger or stick) and on the lamp stand, with a stick. Sometimes it is easier to play an accelerando on the lamp stand between two parts.
Variation in instrumentation. 1. Tap on lampshade, then use bow. 2. Tap on saucepan lid, then use bow.
Play on the sandpaper in small circles.
Blow on the skin of the big drum. If you blow a bit from the side, the friction will work better.
Play on a tube with a part from balloon covering the opening. 1st snap it, then tap more softly.
Play on the big drum with a friction drum (super ball mallet). 1st hit and damp and then play with the mallet in circles. Try to find harmonics and a voice like sound.
Play on the tin can where 2 elastic rubber bands are put in a cross over the opening. Be careful not to cut yourself.
Play on the big drum with soft mallets. No accents, very very soft. Just a low murmur.
Play with fingers on the bands on the tin can and then blow air into it from the side. Friction sound.
Play on the big drum with sticks on the rim. Tight and intense but not sharp. Should be more wood sound than metal.
Metal things like forks, knives, spoons, tin cans & saucepan lids. Make noise in a rhythm. You could have a bin where you throw it in.

2.
1. Start the autovan. The light will be turned on. --------2. Start the sound file from either a usb or a sd-card. Choose & start. --------3. Lift the autovan when it is indicated in the score. Turn the volume down. Put it back the first time.
Start soundfile on a computer or other equipment that works. Just press play and let it be. There is extra silence afterwards so there is no need to stop it. Start soundfile and play it through the bluetooth light bulb. Turn up the volume and light at the same time with a controller. Crossfade with the ensemble. Ends with only sound through bulb. 5 greeting cards in big format with pre-recorded soundfiles on them. Open the card and the file starts playing til the end. Since there is no volume control it might be necessary to amplify the cards. It is easy to rerecord the soundfiles again if necessary.
3.
Close the card and the file stops playing. Put it in a way so it doesn't fall when closed.
Percussion technique There are 6 elements in the piece that are different and needs to look closer into: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 1.
Autovan playing 2-3 mp3-files through bluetooth. Model: Wster WS-267BT. 5 wooden boxes with sound box with light sensor (alt. 5 Greeting cards, 120 seconds of recording each). 2 Smartphones or Computer/Pad playing 2 soundfiles through bluetooth. Lightbulb controlled with bluetooth playing 1 mp3-file. Tin can with 2 elastic rubber bands wrapped around it (like a cross over the open top). Tube with balloon covering the opening end. 2.
1. The autovan will be playing 2 mp3-files, or 3 if you choose to play the last sound file both through the lightbulb and the autovan. The brand is Wster and the model is called WS-267BT. The one used in this piece is also called crystal led and have a light playing all over the surface while playing. Play the soundfiles through bluetooth (or through usb/sd-card, but this means that you have to press play on the autovan at the same time as you manage the autovan down the ramp). Put the phone in flight mode before using bluetooth. If you do it in the opposite way the bluetooth will be disconnected. Try it out before so you know how it works. Be careful with the volume. Keep the autovan on after dress rehearsal and don't switch the bluetooth of either. When you connect the phone/computer through bluetooth, there will be a load voice saying: 'Bluetooth connected'. That can not happen at the concert. So practise and be careful with this. Put the van with the front towards the audience on the ramp before the ensemble start playing. When the autovan is playing, the percussionist will follow it on its way down the ramp so it doesn't fall down. Let it roll twice and then leave it at the end of the ramp. 2. In the 3rd and 5th part, 5 wooden jewelry boxes are used to play soundfiles. Put a device with light sensor (PIR, Passive InfraRed sensor) inside of every box. The device should be able to play soundfiles through a sd-card. The sound will start when the lid is opened. There are two settings. Setting A, where the same sound will play every time the box opens. Setting B, plays a new sound every time you open the box. A smart thing to save space with the boxes can be to choose 5 different sizes & put them inside of each other. Make the boxes look personal and beautiful. Another solution to play these soundfiles is to use greeting cards with a possibility to record & play 120 seconds. Open to play and close to stop the sound. Every time you open the card, it plays from the beginning. Keep track on which card is which. Put numbers or other on them & make the cards big with stiff paper. Make the cards personal with messages on them.

3. You need equipment to play soundfiles in the big speakers on stage. You choose computer, pad or smartphone. There will only be played 2 soundfiles through this controller. Connect the device with cables. 4. At the end of the piece a lightbulb with built-in speakers will be lit and will play a soundfile that is a shadow of what the ensemble is playing. When the ensemble plays a diminuendo, the lightbulb will make a crescendo and take over the soundscape. The light on stage will be fading out at the same time. The only action on stage at the end will be the lightbulb playing the last soundfile while it is lit. When the sound is played, the light is fading out and ends the piece. The lightbulb is controlled from a distance with a controller. The lightbulb should be inside of an old fashioned lamp. If you only have a normal cord for the lamp, then you can fixate it inside of the big lamp at the concert venue. That might be easier. 5. Use an empty tin can and wrap 2 elastic rubber bands around it. The 2 bands should look like a cross over the open top. When you play on it, you can use 2-3 fingers to get a better grip. Be careful not to cut yourself when you play. 6. Find a tube made out of cardboard. They are usually used for posters and deliveries. Take of the plastic covers and leave the endings open. One of them will be covered with a part of a ballon to make the skin to be played on. Cut the bottom of a balloon and stretch the remaining piece over the opening. To keep it there you can use either duct tape or elastic rubber band. But sometimes you don't need that. The cardboard tube can be in different sizes to have different tones. Make the balloon skin tight but not too much It should still be possible to snap/grab the balloon. In the serie of pictures below, it is a tin can instead of a tube but the technique is the same as with a tube.
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Piano 6 industrial elastic rubber bands are wrapped over the end part of the grand piano. Play with your fingers on them. 1-6 (left to right).
Take your hand underneath the piano and make the spoons to tangle and move. Let them ring afterwards.
Blow on the elastic rubber bands from the side to let the friction create a sound that is audible.
Let the nails make a pearly sound on the front side of the keys. Play smoothly.
1st time played in the repetition it is only a rest. 2nd time you play on the 1st elastic rubber band, the most left band. Create a short accelerando and ritardando.
Blow air on the keys. For a stronger sound you can blow on the black keys.
Blow on the elastic rubber bands from left to right and then back again, right to left. Find a way to do it with a good effect without fainting.
Play on the most left band.
Use your relaxed hand and move it in circles over the bands. 'Paint' circles.
Variation/ Melody. Find out how to play when you play on many different bands. Which hand & order.
In the 2nd part of the piece, the technique of silent keys are used. The overtones will ring when you play other tones.
Put a wedge (door stopper) between the 2 notated tones. When you hit the wedge (inside of the piano) with the pedal down, a mellow low sound will be created. This sound and technique will only be used in the 4th part of the piece.
Play pizzicato in the piano. The whole last part includes pizzicato. Mark the tones to make sure you easily can find them. Sometimes you shall play 2 strings of the same tone.
Play harmonics. You can choose to either use your right hand fingers to find the harmonics on the strings while playing on the keys with the left hand. Or, use blutack or other material and put on the strings so that
Piano technique Industrial elastic rubber bands Industrial elastic rubber bands are used and wrapped around the back or front part of the grand piano. If it is not allowed or possible to wrap around the piano, try inside of the piano. Yet another solution is to use a big cardboard box (for moving). But the impression of it and the practicality would not be the same. When you play on the bands inside of the piano, the sound will be naturally amplified with a pedal. You need to keep the bands together underneath the piano. While doing that you can attach silver spoons (or similar, silver has a better sound) on the bands. Preparations for the piano
Large industrial elastic rubber bands.
Luggage straps to fixate the elastic rubber bands under the piano.
1. Wrap over front part, over pin blocks
Positive: Close to keys. Easy to manage & looks great. Best alternative. Negative: Have to stretch the bands a lot. Probably you need to cut the bands so they will just be like a string and then tie it to a luggage strap or other solution.
2. Wrap over the back, the tail & soundboard
Positive: Don't have to stretch the bands so much. Will look nice when pianist move around. Negative: Far away from the keys. Too far to walk to play in part 3.
3. Fixate band over bolts & stress bars
Positive: Could be reached while standing up. Middle close to the keys. 2nd best alternative. Negative: Isn't always easy to find bolts or places to fixate the bands. Depends on the model.
Picture of elastic rubber bands fixated on bolts and stress bars (number 3).
Silver spoons put on a stick. with small elastic rubber bands. Might fall off. Safer way is to drill small holes in the spoons & then put them on the stick with bands.
Other solutions for elastic rubber bands
Silver spoons
Moving box size This is another solution to make it possible to play the technique on elastic rubber bands if you are not allowed to wrap them around the piano. It takes a lot of time Small box size
to prepare & is not practical

but sounds good.
them. Place the stick underneath the piano where it is easy to reach.
Nails on keys
Ebows
You will be playing nails on the keys in this piece and you might wonder exactly what sound is prefered. In this case, the 'nails on the front side of the keys' is the right sound. It is both bright and smooth. And, easy to play.
You will use 2 ebows at the end. Use the switch to turn it on. To the left is normal tone. To the right is with harmonics and without base tone. Use normal setting.

Roll the elastic rubber band back and forward on the neck of the instrument. Make as much noise as possible but follow the dynamics.
Play on the band wrapped over the shoulders, but in the waist/armpit. - 1st example is on the left side of the body; Left Armpit: LAp - 2nd example is on the right side of the body; Right Armpit: RAp
Put the elastic rubber band in position. Where the neck meet the body on an harmonic. The sound will be a 5th up.
Blow air on the instrument, on the strings. Try to make as much friction as possible. That creates more sound.
Roll the elastic rubber bandback and off the neck. Leave it after the nut, close to the nutpegs.
Tap on the body with your finger.
Play on band wrapped over the tail piece. - 1st example is on the right side of the tail piece: RS - 2nd example is on the left side of the tail piece: LS Play on the band wrapped over the tail piece. Use left hand to tighten and lift the band while the right hand plays pizzicato on the band. The tone will change.
Play on the band wrapped over the shoulders, close to the neck. - 1st example is on the left side of the body; Left Shoulder: LSh - 2nd example is on the right side of the body; Right Shoulder: RSh
Play a pizzicato on the elastic rubber band wrapped over the tail piece, but on the backside of the instrument. That creates a very strong hitting sound. You don't need much effort to get a strong sound.
Play a pizzicato arpeggio with your left hand over all open strings as a grace note and then play on the elastic rubber band wrapped over the tail piece, on the right side (RS).
Play on the tail piece with a bow.
Natural harmonics. The staff above shows the result. Underneath the notation shows the position.
Play pizzicato arpeggios with both hands in a tremolo. Left hand in fingerboard position and the 2nd action with the right hand in a position closer to the bridge. All strings in both positions.
Play battuto with mezzo legno bow (MLB). Damp all strings while playing. The bow is playing molto al pont (MaP).
Play legno battuto on double stops during a glissando. Go from fingerboard to bridge and then change strings and repeat the pattern.
Damp all strings & move the bow in vertical direction, along the strings.
Play legno battuto. 1st action is static on two strings. In 2nd action the upper note glides down while the lower tone is an open string.
Move the bow in circles. Mezzo legno.
Play mezzo legno tratto on an artificial harmonic, then quickly legno battuto and back to mezzo legno tratto and a glissando.
Damp all strings & play on the bridge in circles.Whisper a text at the same time.
1st example shows a glissando going a quarter tone up. Next one shows a small change in intonation.
Play in an ordinary, normal way with the bow and play a left hand pizzicato on a string up at the nutpeg.
Play a vibrato close to the bridge. Follow the graphics. Then change to legno battuto and go from ordinary position towards the bridge.
Play a pizzicato arpeggio on all strings: 1st ex: left hand 2nd ex: behind bridge
Start playing on the bridge in circles.
1st example: Pizzicato using two fingers for more power. 2nd example: Nail pizz where you get a thinner pizzicato. Play with your finger (not nail) on the right side of the fingerboard where it ends.
Play a trill between a normal tone and an artificial harmonic. Change the speed of the bow at the same time. Go from normal speed to slow. At the end, stop trilling and play hard pressure.
Glide a bit of the bridge and play hard pressure. Change position and play a natural harmonic. First in an ordinary way the with a circular motion. Then whisper gently: 'suddiga skuggor'. Exaggerate the consonants.
String technique [c1 = middle c] Three elastic rubber bands are used, but of 2 kind: 1 short, 2 longer: 1.
Pitches on the violin:
Thin band is placed around the neck a fifth up on the string. The band is rolled up and down to make a sound. When placed on the fifth, the sounding tones are different than the one written in the score (one octave plus 5th up in normal position & two octaves plus augmented 4th up behind the bridge). Double fold the band.
The pitches on the viola and cello is a 5th down in viola and a 5th plus an octave down on the cello. The pitches of the elastic bands around the body is more difficult to know but try to have these written pitches in mind while wrapping the band. -------------------------------------------------------------------2.
Two medium thin band are wrapped around the body on two places: a: around the shoulders b: around the bottom a & b: The musician will play tones on the bands on the shoulders, armpit & bottom on both sides of the instrument. Percussive sounds are played on the backside of the instrument. The tones that will be created should be as close to the following as possible: LEFT; Shoulder: g Armpit: f Bottom: own choice RIGHT;
Shoulder: Armpit: Bottom:
d c c
The percussive sounds that will be created should be as following: MIDDLE BACK; Armpit Bottom b. Picture of the band over the tail piece
Stage
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––-––––– This is my personal suggestion for a setup on stage. It fits the music. But everything depends on the concert hall and the rest of the program. The piece has been performed with both the pianist and the percussionist on the right side. The pianist in the back. It wasn't optimal since you couldn't see the pianist playing. But that was the only solution in that concert hall. There are some things in the setup that need to be looked at in good time: the leaning surface for the autovan, the podium and the lamp stand. These things are something that the stage manager can help with but you need to actually have a leaning surface. And perhaps a lamp too. My solution to the leaning surface was to buy two very cheap metal shelf with 4 removable shelves in each package at a hardware store. I used all parts of it to make the leaning surface. The construction stand was a help to keep the shelves in place. It has to be a smooth surface so that the autovan doesn't stop rolling. So, put 2 shelves together and fixate them to each other with one of the high stands with some screws. Try to estimate how you should make it a fit before you start. It is hard to re-do it. It will look cool and silvery on stage. You need a very long surface if you want it to roll for 15 seconds. And, now is the tricky part. You need to calculate the angle of the surface. How steep should it be to make the autovan roll for about 15 seconds? You have to find some boxes or similar to make a stable ground for the ramp. And try it out. A tip: It should not be steep at all. Try almost flat first and then take it up a bit. You need to be 2-3 people to do this. When you have the angle, then make sure everything is stable and put a nice dark fabric over it and then the metal surface on top of it. Of course you are free to find your own solution, but keep in mind that it should look impressive on stage and should also be smooth for the autovan to roll down on. If you don't make a very safe construction on the sides of the ramp, you need to follow it down so it doens't fall of. Make a stop at the end so that the camper can stay there after the last trip. The podium should just be to see the percussionist behind the winds. And you can probably borrow an oldfashioned lamp from somewhere just for the concert. It should be a shade with warm colours.
Start electronics before the audience enters the hall: - 5 Radios/Smartphones with application (put the volume on lowest) - 3 Smartphones; A, B & C (bluetooth on B & C) - Sound equipment inside of the 5 music boxes/Greeting cards - Autovan & Light bulb with bluetooth (keep it on lowest sound & light)
