Frequently Asked Questions Q: How is the YMCA keeping my child safe while in their swim lesson? • Class sizes have been reduced in order to allow physical distancing • Floor decals have been installed in order to allow physical distancing on the pool deck • Equipment will not be shared and will be disinfected between each use • Children are encouraged to wear goggles for eye protection • Younger levels will be parented to limit contact between the instructor and your child and to help ensure physical distancing is maintained Q: How do I sign my child in for swim class? A: Children under 8 will need to be signed in by a parent or guardian. Binders will not be passed from person to person and parents/ guardians are encouraged to bring their own pen for sign in. Parents/guardians who will be attending a parented lesson will not need to sign their child in. Q: Where can parents/guardians wait while their child is in a program in the pool? A: Currently, YMCA Calgary is not allowing spectators in traditional seating areas in arenas, swimming areas, gymnasiums or art studios. This is in place to help maintain appropriate physical distancing, limit contact points and reduce the number of spaces to continuously disinfect for the safety of everyone in our facilties. In addition, in order to maintain physical distancing as mandated by Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, lobbies cannot be used as gathering spaces for groups. This will
18
be strictly enforced. We ask that parents and guardians find alternative locations to wait during programs. Here are some options to consider: • Where possible, please have only one parent/guardian accompany a child to program or if they need support in the change room • Please do not wait in facility change rooms • Please wait in the facility lobby only if appropriate distancing is possible • Choose to wait within other nearby public amenities like public libraries, external coffee shops, parks or other outdoors spaces if the weather cooperates. Please also consider returning home during the program if that is practical in the timeframe available. • We ask you to please be respectful of others using the facility. Even in this time of change and uncertainty we are aiming for facilities that are kind, considerate, safe and for all. We hope to relax these stringent measures once we have a better sense of patterns of flow of people during program times and as health guidance changes. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
VISIT YMCACALGARY.ORG/PROGRAMS FOR MORE INFORMATION
Q: How will instructors manage spacing between children in class? A: Floor decals will be placed along the edge of the pool to ensure physical distancing in lessons. Younger levels will be parented to help ensure physical distancing is maintained Q:Who is permitted to enter the Aquatics Area for the program? A: Any child under the age of 8 in a Pre-School or in Otter/Seal program will be permitted past the front desk with 1 parent/guardian per child. Parents/Guardians of children 8 and older will not be permitted past the front desk (with exceptions) to better ensure physical distancing Q: When will participants be able to access the facility? A: Program Participants and their Parent/ Guardian will be able to access the facility 10 minutes before the start of the program time. Q: What if my child is over 8 and they need assistance changing? A: If your child is over the age of 8 and requires additional assistance changing, a parent/ guardian can accompany and assist the child in the change room. YMCA CALGARY FALL 2020 PROGRAM GUIDE
This is required to ensure that the child is always within arm’s reach of an adult while still staying within one’s cohort. The parent/ guardian will support the child and assist them based on the direction given from the instructor to help the child develop their swimming ability Note: In any level that requires a parent/guardian, each child present will need a parent/guardian to assist them during a lesson
Q: What if I need to accompany my child and I can’t swim? A: All of our parented lessons will take place in shallow water (5ft deep or less) so parents/ guardians will not need to know how to swim in order to accompany their child. Lifejackets will also be made available to parents/ guardians if they wish to wear one. Q: What do I need to wear if I’m accompanying my child for their swim class? A: Parents/Guardians accompanying their child are required to wear proper swimwear which is inclusive of our non-traditional swimwear option. Q: Can my child bring their own equipment? A: Parents/Guardians can bring equipment from home provided it is approved by the instructor
