Am I prepared for my visit to the Y?

Do I have photo ID? Everyone 12 years and older requires photo ID or a YMCA Membership Card to access any YMCA location. (Acceptable photo ID includes: driver’s licence, student or work ID, passport, or your YMCA Membership Card.)

Did I bring my own lock? We recommend you lock all personal belongings when you visit the YMCA. Please bring a lock with you to secure your items.

Do I need a towel? Towel service is available at some YMCA locations. Extra Memberships include unlimited towel service. Daily service: $2/towel Monthly service: $12.50/month

Am I prepared to take a swim test? All swimmers from 8 -13Y are required to take a swim test, and swimmers under 8Y will be marked with a red wristband. Our swim test helps determine swim level, if a life jacket is required and it helps us better monitor swimmers in the water.

Have I checked the YMCA Calgary app? The YMCA Calgary app is an easy way to stay informed. Use the app to view schedules, class descriptions, times and locations, as well as class cancellations/changes. We recommend checking schedules for changes before you arrive. CHILD MINDING Child Minding is a short-term care service for children ages 6 weeks to 8 years. Parents/guardians can leave children for up to two hours/visit while using YMCA facilities*. CALGARY FLAMES YMCA GRADE 6 MEMBERSHIPS Through the generous support of the Calgary Flames Foundation, YMCA Calgary provides all Grade 6 students in Calgary with a fullyear membership and special programming for FREE! It is a great way for Grade 6 students to be active and practice independence and leadership in a safe and positive place that promotes the Y’s values of respect, responsibility, honesty and caring.

General Memberships include use of the general locker rooms and access to all YMCA locations. South Health Campus YMCA’s reduced-rate membership includes access to this location only (there is no pool or gymnasium at this location). Every Grade 6 student in Calgary receives a free Calgary Flames Foundation-supported membership and active programming throughout their Grade 6 year. For details, visit ymcacalgary.org/ grade6. All memberships are continuous, monthly memberships. Fees are withdrawn monthly and include GST.

GENERAL

Extra Memberships include the use of the Extra Locker Rooms. This membership includes complimentary toiletries, unlimited towel service, and access to hot tubs and steam rooms located in some locker rooms. Our caregivers and educators have a passion for caring for kids and helping them learn and grow! We deliver quality care and play-based learning experiences to help children build foundational social and physical literacy skills, as well as a spark for lifelong learning. Children are led through the YMCA’s values of respect, responsibility, honesty and caring in a fun, safe and nurturing environment. All YMCA caregivers and educators have an up-to-date police security clearance, first aid and CPR certification. Our educators also have post-secondary education in Early Childhood Development and are certified by Alberta Human Services.

CHILD CARE AGE: 12M - 5Y (FULL-DAY CARE) Set your child up for success in this well-rounded care and learning program. YMCA Calgary’s licenced child care service provides full-day care for children aged 12 months to 5 years. Our early childhood educators use the YMCA Playing to Learn© curriculum, which aligns with primary school benchmarks and helps children learn and discover through fun activities and creative play. We aim to foster enthusiasm and spark a lifelong love of learning in your child. * Note: Our provincially designated ELCC ($25/day child care) programs are currently full and waitlists are capped. Any availibility will be communicated on our website.

CHILD MINDING AGE: 6 WEEKS - 8Y (SHORT-TERM CARE) You'll have peace of mind knowing your child is being well cared for while you work on your health and well-being. YMCA Calgary’s Child Minding service provides short-term care for infants and children. Your child will have engaging learning experiences that make his or her visit to the YMCA as fun and beneficial as yours! Child Minding must be booked in advance. Child Minding for infants and toddlers (6 weeks to 35 months) is FREE for YMCA Members

YMCA MULTI-DAY PRESCHOOL AGE: 3Y - 5Y Help your child get a great start in learning! In this program, preschoolers will be introduced to physical activity, literacy, mathematics and science through play-based learning experiences. Your child will have fun in the preschool room participating in story time, art, drama and music activities, and will enjoy lots of active time in YMCA spaces working on gross motor, spatial awareness and movement fundamentals. This fun, multi-day program supports children to build positive relationships and gain confidence with early learning concepts. *Note: Some classes include a weekly YMCA swim or skating lesson with a qualified instructor. Children must be able to use the washroom independently. Please bring a healthy, nut-free snack, as well as a swimsuit and towel if your child’s program includes a swim lesson - or a CSA-approved helmet, gloves/ mittens and skates if your child’s program includes a skate lesson.

Option A: YMCA Preschool Each class will include time in the preschool and activities in our dryland areas. There is no pool time in this option. Option B: YMCA Preschool – Recreational Swim* One class per week will include a recreational swim. Preschoolers will be carefully supervised by preschool educators and a YMCA lifeguard. Option C: YMCA Preschool – Swim Lesson* One class per week will include a YMCA swim lesson with a qualified instructor. Swim lessons in this class are part of our national YMCA swim program, giving your child time each week to master or progress to the next swim level. * Swim dates and times will be announced during the first week of the program. Please bring a swimsuit and towel on your child’s swim day.

Option D: YMCA Preschool – Skate Lesson (4Y - 5Y)* One class per week will include a YMCA skate lesson with a qualified instructor. Your child will participate in our Learn to Skate program, learning basic skating fundamentals and how to be comfortable on the ice. A CSA-approved helmet and gloves or mittens are required. * This option is only available at Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge.

L’il Dippers programs introduce preschoolers (and the adults who accompany them) to a wide range of water activities, while setting a foundation for the critical life skill of swimming.

Children will improve their body awareness and motor skills as they submerge, kick, roll and jump in the water. Otters will learn to swim underwater and glide on top. DOLPHINS & SWIMMERS AGE: 6Y - 14Y Have your child dive into improving swimming skills. This program is designed to increase your child’s swimming distance up to 15 metres using front and back strokes. Dolphins will co-ordinate arms, legs and breathing for smooth propulsion during front and back crawl. At the Swimmers level, participants will increase skills in front and back strokes, endurance, and treading water.

STAR LEVEL 7 - LEADERSHIP AGE: 6Y - 14Y You’ll be the ultimate swimming star after this challenging level! Enhance your skills in this final level of YMCA’s Star Leadership program. In this program, you will gain a deeper understanding of the roles of lifeguards and swim instructors by assisting them with their responsibilities. You will also learn first aid, how to teach others skills using effective feedback and will perform a 12-minute, 400-metre endurance swim.

ADULT LEVEL 1 - LEARN TO SWIM AGE: 15Y AND UP Learn the basic swimming skills to become comfortable in the water. You will learn to safely enter and exit the pool, how to jog and move through the water, and to float with and without assistance. Other skills such as breathing techniques, flutter kick, and front and back swimming may be introduced, depending on individual abilities.

LEVEL 2 - SWIMMING STROKES AND SKILLS AGE: 15Y AND UP

AQUATICS

Improve your swimming strokes and build on your skills. In this class, you will learn front and back crawl, treading water, and the whip kick. You’ll also receive an orientation on deep water, and will practice swimming greater distances. Participants should be able to continuously swim 25-50 meters of front crawl and back crawl.

LEVEL 3 - STROKE IMPROVEMENT AGE: 15Y AND UP Build endurance while developing and improving swimming strokes. In addition to front crawl, back crawl and breast stroke, you’ll get an introduction to the sidestroke, butterfly and eggbeater. Different lifesaving skills may also be included. You must be able to swim 50 metres and be comfortable in deep water.

SWIM FIT AGE: 15Y AND UP Boost your fitness level and your swimming skills! You will refine your strokes and increase your endurance and efficiency through a variety of swim drills and practice. This fun and social class is a great way to add interest and challenge to lane swimming and become a stronger swimmer. Participants should feel comfortable in the water and be able to swim a minimum of 50 metres continuously.

AQUA BOOTCAMP AGE: 15Y AND UP

Train like a Navy Seal! This is an intense shallow water fitness class that works all the major muscles using different equipment, body positions and drills to add resistance and challenge cardio, core and overall strength.

AQUA ZUMBA® AGE: 15Y AND UP Known as the Zumba “pool party,” Aqua Zumba gives new meaning to the idea of an invigorating workout. Blend the fun of Zumba with traditional aqua fitness creating a safe, challenging, water-based workout that will tone your body and strengthen your cardiovascular system.

TRIATHLON SWIM TRAINING AGE: 15Y AND UP Nail the swimming portion of your triathlon! You will improve your swimming skills by focusing on advanced training methods to improve your front crawl, and build your speed and endurance. ALBERTA CANCER AND EXERCISE PROGRAM (ACE) AGE: 18Y AND UP Are you currently undergoing or have completed cancer treatment? The ACE program aims to improve quality of life for individuals living with cancer in Canada. You will participate in a variety of group exercise classes to help promote physical activity, improve your level of fitness and reduce stress. ACE is part of a study funded by Alberta Innovates: to be eligible, participants must be over 18 years old, within three years of treatment completion, and able to consent in English. The ACE Maintenance program is open to graduates of the ACE study and individuals who do not meet all of the ACE study criteria.

HEALTHY LIVING MAINTENANCE AGE: 18Y AND UP Do you have a chronic condition and/or have survived a cardiac event? Designed for graduates of the Living Well and/or Cardiac Wellness programs, participants will engage in both cardio and resistance-training exercises while supervised by a trained instructor. This social program will help you build and maintain your strength and cardio fitness. Participants must have clearance from their doctor(s) to participate.

PURE STRENGTH & FLEXIBILITY AGE: 55Y AND UP Strengthen and lengthen in this beneficial and educational program! You will focus on learning and correcting proper lifting techniques and incorporating mindfulness into your daily fitness practice. Participants will use a variety of strengthbased equipment including Olympic lifting platforms, TRX and free weights. You will learn how to build, improve, and maintain strength and range of motion throughout the entire body. Strength, flexibility and endurance testing is included in this program.

Option 1: Cycle and Stretch Easy does it with this gentle program. Start your cycling journey with a safe, low-impact cardio workout on the bike, followed by a gentle stretch following your ride. You will improve your endurance, mobility, flexibility and stamina. Option 2: Active Older Adult Yoga Defy the aging process and loosen up with Yoga for Active Older Adults. Yoga will ease joint issues, reduce chronic pain, improve flexibility and posture, enhance balance, strengthen muscles, reduce insomnia, improve circulation, and help regulate blood pressure.

Join this highly effective, low-impact water workout! Using a buoyancy belt in deep water, your head will stay above the surface during various cardio and resistance exercises. This class is perfect for those with injuries or limitations. Confidence in deep water is required.

SHALLOW WATER FITNESS

Use the water’s resistance to your advantage. This class will challenge your muscular and cardiovascular endurance while improving balance, stability and flexibility. Classes take place in the shallow end of the pool. Swimming ability is not required.

CARDIO CARDIO KICKBOXING

Fight to get fit! Work to hone your cardiovascular fitness, muscles and motor skills using a variety of kickboxing moves. Learn proper technique as you are led through kicking and punching exercises.

STEP FIT

Start on the right foot in this high-energy class. You will increase your cardiovascular fitness using the step and a variety of choreographed movements. Cool down with a full-body stretching session at the end of the class.

Join this energetic dance class! Zumba cardio dance mixes high- and low-intensity moves using the rhythms of Latin and world music. You will raise your fitness level in a fun, encouraging atmosphere. No dance experience is required.

CYCLE CYCLE STRENGTH

Go the distance with this full-body workout. This class combines cardiovascular training and muscleconditioning exercises on and off the bike. Finish the class with a satisfying stretch session targeting your major muscle groups.

CYCLE AND CORE

A strong core makes for a smoother ride! This highenergy class combines cardiovascular training and core work. You will get a great cardio workout on the bike, then hop off the bike for core work and stretching exercises.

Build strength and progress. In this weight-training class, you will use barbells and plates for a total body workout. Instructors will lead you through a structured resistance program each week, developing your strength and endurance. Don’t ignore your core! Get into the action in the pool and the gym! Participants will enjoy a YMCA swim lesson and a variety of high-energy movement and motion activities in the gym. Badminton is a blast! Explore the foundational skills of badminton and develop a love for this fast-moving game. Each week, you will start with a warm-up, then move into a skills session and wind things up with an informal game to apply your new skills. Participants will learn to free-climb along the bouldering wall while engaging in exciting games and activities. HANG DOGS AGE: 9Y - 11Y Boost your child’s confidence, strength and determination in this fun free-climbing and top-rope program! Participants will practice knot work, routesetting, communication sequences and climbing strategies, and will challenge their skills on the wall. Your child will learn the importance of safety and teamwork and further advance their climbing skills.

ROCK JOCKS AGE: 12Y - 13Y CREATIVE HEIGHTS INDEPENDENT - AGE: 4Y - 5Y If your children are climbing your walls, why not let them climb ours? This class is designed for your active preschooler. This beginning climbing course will focus on safety and skill on the bouldering wall. Your child will also participate in songs, stories and group games. Children must be able to use the washroom independently, and non-slip indoor shoes are required. A waiver must be signed prior to climbing.

CHILDREN & YOUTH Get a grip on the basics of wall-climbing in this active program! Your child will learn useful skills such as beginner knot work, wall safety, setting routes and goals, and the importance of trust and communication in climbing. Through fun free-climbing and top-rope exercises, participants will build strength, stamina, and body and spatial awareness.

ROCK STARS AGE: 14Y - 15Y Hone your climbing expertise in this fun program. You will refine your skills in knot work, route-setting and strategic thinking, while challenging yourself to even greater heights on the wall. Participants will learn to use more advanced climbing equipment such as belay devices.

ADULT FIRST ASCENTS AGE: 15Y AND UP Learn to rock the climbing wall! This 1.5-hour program will help novice climbers learn the basics of top-rope climbing, including safety procedures, belay technique, knot work and the proper use of equipment. After successfully passing a belay test, you’ll be all set to belay independently in open climbs. Previous climbing experience is not required.

BABYSITTING CERTIFICATION COURSE AGE: 11Y - 17Y

JUNIOR LIFEGUARDING CLUB AGE: 10Y - 14Y

Learn to take charge and develop a great new skill. You will learn safe practices for working with children as you develop leadership skills. This Red Cross Babysitting course covers everything from managing difficult behaviours in children to basic first aid, as well as how to conduct yourself professionally as a babysitter. A manual is included in the course fee.

Discover what it takes to be a lifeguard. This program introduces you to lifesaving techniques and first aid skills. You’ll also gain experience in accident prevention and dealing with the public. Participants must be able to swim 50 metres and tread water for one minute.

YMCA COACH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM AGE: 14Y AND UP

FREE

Learn to lead! In this free program, participants will learn how to create, structure and lead a YMCA sport program. At the end of the program, you will understand best-practice coaching methods and be ready to be a volunteer coach for a YMCA sport program. A great start to becoming a leader in the community. This program requires travel between three locations for the first six weeks. Suitable for those with or without previous coaching experience.

Gain the confidence and skills you need to perform lowrisk rescues. Increase your understanding of lifesaving skills and personal water safety while developing individual and group decision-making abilities. This course will also prepare you for the Bronze Medallion course. Before taking Bronze Star, we recommend you complete the Canadian Star Patrol program.

NATIONAL LIFEGUARD AGE: 16Y AND UP

Boost your understanding of lifesaving principles and skills. Learn tows, carries, release methods, victim assessment and emergency care through this 20hour course. To participate, you must be at least 10 years old and have successfully completed the Bronze Star Award, or be 13 years or older and able to swim. This course requires 100-per cent participation for successful completion. A manual is included in the program fee.

Advance your YMCA aquatic leadership to the ultimate level. This 40-hour program builds on the skills, knowledge and values taught in the lifesaving awards. To participate in this program, you must have completed the Bronze Cross Award and standard first aid with CPR Level C. This course requires 100per cent attendance and participation to complete successfully. The manual is included in the course fee.

BRONZE CROSS AGE: 13Y AND UP Looking to advance your lifesaving training? This 20-hour course teaches you the difference between lifesaving and lifeguarding, giving you the directions on how to safely supervise swimmers in and around the water. This course covers emergency procedures, injury assessment and spinal injury rescue. Prerequisite: completion of the Bronze Medallion Award. This course requires 100-per cent attendance and participation to complete.

NATIONAL LIFEGUARD RECERTIFICATION AGE: 16Y AND UP Continue your certification to be able to work in any pool across Canada. This 4-hour recertification covers all the skills, knowledge and values taught in the National Lifeguard Service pool option course. To enrol in this course, you must hold a National Lifeguard Service card current within the past five years. This course requires 100-per cent participation for successful completion.

NATIONAL LIFEGUARD WATERPARK AGE: 16Y AND UP Advance your YMCA Aquatic Leadership to the max! This 16-hour course builds on the skills already learned in the National Lifeguard Pool course. Participants will learn specialized lifesaving techniques for wave pools, river rides and waterslides! To participate in this program, you must have completed the National Lifeguard Pool award and Alberta-Approved Standard First Aid with CPR Level C. Course requires 100-per cent attendance.

LEADERSHIP

YMCA ASSISTANT SWIM INSTRUCTOR AGE: 16Y AND UP Complete your certification and you’ll become a YMCA swim instructor. To enrol in this 40-hour course, you must be 16 years or older, have a current Bronze Cross or National Lifeguard Service Award, and Standard First Aid with CPR Level C, and your strokes must be at Intermediate standard. To successfully complete the course, 100-per cent attendance and participation is required.

Have you ever wanted to step up and lead the class? If you have ever wanted to instruct choreographed classes such as Hi-Lo or Step, then this course is for you. YMCA leadership courses take you through all of the theoretical and practical information needed to become a YMCA-certified Fitness Leader. In this course, you will learn anatomy, physiology, use of music, class components, class safety and exercise design. Through a combination of classroom and studio time, you will learn how to teach and cue to your fellow classmates. In addition, you will be partnered with a current YMCA Cardio Fitness Leader for 1-2 hours of weekly apprenticeship. Cost includes all classroom and studio instruction observation time for certification, apprenticeship work (one to two hours per week for a minimum of eight weeks, handouts and selfstudy assignments, and final evaluation required for certification). Prerequisites include attending 50 hours or more of cardio/choreography fitness classes, and CPR Level C at time of certification. You must be 16 years or older at the time of certification.
