GOOD TO KNOW!

WE INCORPORATE PHYSICAL LITERACY INTO ALL OUR PROGRAMS.

PHYSICAL LITERACY

101

HAVE YOU HEARD OF THE TERM PHYSICAL LITERACY? WE DON’T TAKE THE TERM LIGHTLY. Physical literacy means developing the foundational skills and confidence required to participate in regular physical activity and play a sport. YMCA programs include intentional activities that help build physical literacy to allow your child to participate in whatever activity or sport they choose. Those who are physically literate are comfortable in all physical environments: on the ground (e.g. running, throwing balls); in the water (e.g. swimming); on snow and ice (e.g. skating and skiing); in the air (e.g. moving in the air without support – i.e. jumping/spinning in the air); and in the outdoors (e.g. movement on uneven surfaces).

START EARLY. It’s important to build a foundation of physical literacy. The early years are the best time to start. You can continue to build these skills through life.

BE ACTIVE FOR LIFE. It’s proven that people who are physically literate are more likely to be active for life.

8

PHYSICAL LITERACY AGES & STAGES

Start by developing a good base of foundational skills. Developing physical literacy skills is progressive, and different at each developmental stage.

Once a foundation of skills is built, youth can choose to build specific skills to participate in competitive sport. In these stages, youth can begin to develop sport-specific skills while still continuing to build physical literacy skills.

OR skip competitive sport and simply choose physical activities to be active for life. Once a good foundation of physical literacy is built, anyone can confidently participate in a variety of sports and activities – with the goal of being active for life!

COMMUNITY We give everyone the same opportunities as you. Offered at over 60 locations across the city, YMCA Calgary community programs respond to a wide variety of community needs. Programs include: indigenous youth leadership; language instruction and cultural integration; math tutoring; and after school children's programs. These donor-supported initiatives provide access to quality programs and positive role models. Individuals develop a sense of belonging to their local community, learn meaningful life skills and have the opportunity to become positive leaders in their community. For more information on our community initiatives, check out ymcacalgary.org/community-ymca/

"The [YMCA staff and volunteers] help our students develop the social skills and friendship skills that they need to have a positive outcome for the year and for some of these kids, that is huge. This is being reinforced in school and in the after school program. These skills are going home and now parents are learning these skills too. We [and the YMCA] are a hand of friendship to our community. It’s the hand reaching out to the ones that need it the most." – Jean Zoller, Former Assistant Principal
