Develop physical literacy
Belong to a positive community
YMCA programs include intentional activities that help build physical literacy to help kids be active and confident in whatever activity or sport they choose.
Our facilities are filled with people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Our programs create opportunities to build positive relationships with like-minded, active people.
It’s proven that people who are physically literate are more likely to be active for life (see more about physical literacy on page 4).
Become socially responsible Through our values of respect, honesty, responsibility and caring, we teach kids to respect themselves, others and the environment in which they learn and play.
Participating with others provides a powerful combination of support, accountability, and motivation to stay active and helps build healthy communities.
Be active for life We offer accessible programs and facillities that help develop and sustain healthy and active lifestyles.
Develop life skills Kids learn social skills, how to be independent and to make good choices. We foster individual development through group learning, challenge and fun.

Physical Literacy Have you heard of the term physical literacy? We don’t take the term lightly. Physical literacy means developing the foundational skills and confidence required to participate in regular physical activity and play a sport. YMCA programs include intentional activities that help build physical literacy to allow your child to participate in whatever activity or sport they choose. Those who are physically literate are comfortable in all physical environments: on the ground (eg. running, throwing balls); in the water (eg. swimming); on snow and ice (eg. skating and skiing); in the air (eg. moving in the air without support - ie., jumping/ spinning in the air); and in the outdoors (eg. movement on uneven surfaces).
Start Early. It’s important to build a foundation of physical literacy. The early years are the best time to start. You can continue to build these skills through life.

Be active for life.
It’s proven that people who are physically literate are more likely to be active for life.

101 Physical Literacy
Ages & Stages
Start by developing a good base of foundational skills. Developing physical literacy skills is progressive, and different at each developmental stage.
>
BOYS 0 - 6 GIRLS 0 - 6 Learn basic movement skills and link them together to play. Develop habits for being active.
BOYS 6 - 9 GIRLS 6 - 8 Learn fundamental movement skills and build agility, balance and coordination.
BOYS 9- 12 GIRLS 8- 11 Convert fundamental movement skills to fundamental sport- specific skillls.
Once a foundation of skills is built, youth can choose to build skills to participate in competitive sport.
In these stages, youth can begin to develop sport-specific skills (while still continuing to build physical literacy skills).
BOYS 12-16 GIRLS 11 - 15 TRAIN TO TRAIN Build aerobic base and consolidate sport-specific skills.
BOYS 16 - 23 GIRLS 15 - 21
BOYS 19 GIRLS 18+
TRAIN TO COMPETE Train to solidify sportspecific/position-specific skills and physical capabilities.
Refine skills with the ultimate goal to win.
TRAIN TO WIN
OR skip competitive sport and simply choose physical activities to be active for life. Once a good foundation of physical literacy is built, anyone can confidently participate in a variety of sports and activities - with the goal of being active for life!
AGES 12+ ACTIVE FOR LIFE

Healthy communities start with healthy kids. CHILD CARE Our child care educators create fun learning opportunities that help teach children social skills, the value of health and to become school-ready. Our childcare educators implement the YMCA Playing to Learn curriculum, which aligns with primary school benchmarks and helps children learn and discover through creative play. YMCA Playing to Learn is intended to ensure a child’s continued enthusiasm and capacity for life-long learning. It provides an understanding of how play offers the foundation for learning to read and write, and for learning mathematics, science and technology. It provides early childhood educators with the skills to prepare spaces conducive to play-based learning and to utilize best practices which encourage quality learning experiences. OUR PHILOSOPHY.
We’ve been in the childcare business for more than 20 years. Our philosophy has remained the same.
LEARNING
SOCIAL
HEALTH
YMCA childcare centres use the national YMCA Playing to Learn curriculum. This play-based curriculum is designed to maximize children’s learning by actively engaging them in small group, playbased learning experiences that are developmentally appropriate.
Relationships form the foundation for all that occurs within the child care setting. Children learn about YMCA Calgary’s four core values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility. Children practice behaviours that support social skill development, emotional competence, selfregulation, and community engagement.
Our program teaches children to value health, nutrition and activity. We encourage and support healthy eating habits and provide dedicated time througout each day for ageappropriate movement. Through intentional activities, we begin to build the foundation for physical literacy (read more about physical literacy on pages 4 and 5).
Activities encompass all developmental areas and support children with school readiness and to become life-long learners. Program options include onsite enhancement activities and field trips for older children.
All children enrolled in the YMCA Childcare receive a complimentary YMCA Child Membership.

AQUATICS LEARNING TO SWIM ISN’T JUST FOR KIDS. Looking to overcome your fear of the water, refine your strokes, or become a more efficient triathlon swimmer? We offer adult programs from beginner to master. Visit page 23 for details.

REMINGTON YMCA
IT’S A FACT.
Drowning is the second leading cause of death in Canadian children under 5 years of age. Deceptively quiet and often mistaken for water play, 10% of drownings happen while parents are watching. Introducing children to swim lessons that teach swim skills and water safety helps to prevent drowning. Register your child for a swim lesson today!
How do you determine what swim level is right for your child?
Use our progression chart and level descriptions. If you have observed your child in the water, use the descriptions on pages 16 and 17 to determine what level is right for your child. With the exception of Star Leadership 7, our unparented swim programs have two levels in each swim class. Once your child can confidently complete the skills in the first level they will move to the next (for example, once Bobbers successfully complete their skills, they move to Floaters). Depending on skill level, your child can be enrolled in the second level to start.
View your child’s lesson or ask your child’s swim intructor on the last day of lessons where to place your child for the next session.
Contact your local YMCA and speak with a certified swim instructor.
Book a swim assessment with one of our aquatics team members or drop-in during our regular swim lessons - it’s free! If your child is under 8 years old, you must be in the water with your child during the assessment.
Use your child’s online swim report card to determine what skills match which level. To access your child’s report card, visit www.ymcacalgary.org/reportcards. Use your membership or swim access card barcode number to login.
Visit us at ymcacalgary.org/registration for dates, times and pricing.
