Physical literacy means developing the foundational skills and the confidence required to participate in regular physical activity, play a sport or get to the podium. YMCA camps include intentional activities that help build physical literacy and allow your child to participate in whatever activity or sport they choose.
>
It’s proven that people who are physically literate are more likely to be active for life. Learn more about physical literacy at activeforlife.com.
become socially responsible Through our values of respect, honesty, responsibility and caring, we teach kids to respect themselves, others and the environment in which they learn and play. Some camps explore philanthropy and help kids see the value in community service.
develop life skills Kids learn social skills, how to be independent and to make good choices. We foster individual development through group learning, challenge and fun.
and help create happy, healthy communities.

Parent myths, and real truths about physical literacy. When parents talk to me about physical literacy and their children, different myths and misunderstandings often surface. Most revolve around their basic understanding of movement skills, sport and activity, and physical development. Some relate to the perceived attitudes and desires of their children. But a lot of it is bunk.
1. My kid is not athletic This is probably the biggest myth going. After the child tries a couple of organized team sports at age 5 and doesn’t score any goals, the parents figure that destiny has shown its hand. Their child will never be physically literate, nor will they be playing in the major leagues 20 years from now.
Then I ask the parents: “has he tried swimming? Skating? Judo? Sailing? Hiking? Rock-climbing? Skiing? Skateboarding? Ballet? Hip-hop? Badminton?” Silence.
4. My child doesn’t like competition
Humans are designed to move, and unless your child has an extraordinary developmental condition or severe injury that significantly impedes physical movement, you can be sure that they have some degree of latent “athleticism”. It’s called physical literacy, and you have to help them to develop it. Physical literacy doesn’t happen on its own.
Some kids really don’t like competition in any form, and that’s fine.
To help your child develop physical literacy and movement skills, simply ensure that they get lots of opportunities to explore different physical activities, sports, and free play. And help them to find something that they enjoy doing.
Again, physical activity — and by extension, physical literacy — doesn’t have to revolve around ice hockey, soccer, basketball, and professional tennis. Physical literacy can be dance. It can be orienteering. It can be rock-climbing. It can be hundreds of things.
2. It’s too late for my kid
So please don’t give up on your kid. It’s almost certain that there is a physical activity or a sport that they’ll enjoy. And there’s always time for them to develop a healthy, active lifestyle by developing
Once their child reaches age 8, many parents figure they are past their prime. Sadly, a lot of coaches and instructors will tell them the same. The key thing to understand: your kid can still learn to play tennis at age 8. In fact, they can still learn to play at age 18 or 38. It’s more important to develop physical literacy through a variety of physical activities, sports, and free play. And while it’s optimal to start in early childhood, it’s never too late to develop physical literacy. Just get moving.
But the assumption here is that all physical activity is competitive, and therefore the child must remain a lump on the sofa for the next seven decades. That simply isn’t true.

3. My kid doesn’t like sports Physical literacy is not “sports”. It’s about developing general competency and confidence in movement. When parents have said this to me [my kid doesn’t like sports], i ask them: “what sports and activities has your child tried?” “He did a one-week sport camp last summer and they played soccer, basketball, and tennis. He didn’t like any of it.”

MULTI-ACTIVITY CAMP YMCA camps take place at all six Calgary YMCA locations. During multi-activity camps, participants will play sports, sing songs, get artsy, and participate in a variety of traditional camp games in the facility. They’ll play court sports, scale walls, and take on the pool! Some will even explore philanthropy. Half-day, full-day and week-long camps are offered at all Calgary YMCA locations.
Campers will brave the weather and experience the fun of outdoor camp —right here in the city! Located at Sandy Beach in Calgary’s southwest, this outdoor space is full of adventure.
Located just an hour outside of Calgary in Bow Valley Wildlands Provincial Park, Camp Chief Hector provides a rich ecosystem for children and youth to learn and grow through nature.
Outdoor enthusiasts will test their skills on the low-ropes and challenge courses, bouldering cube, and archery range. They’ll even build a team shelter!
This fun outdoor camp promotes independence and individual growth through group development and challenge.
Participants will join in on traditional camp songs and games, and explore forests and wide-open spaces.
Your child will explore nature, canoe on the lake, go horseback riding, and swim in the pool. They’ll test their love of the high-ropes, challenge course, rock climbing wall, archery course and getting creative in the adventure park. They’ll enjoy camp songs and campfires in the evening before they hit their tipi for a much needed sleep. An experience not to be missed!
swimming climbing art A swim option (with lesson), climbing or art option is available with some camps. Look for these symbols throughout the guide.
Visit ymcacalgary.org for details.

HOW DO KIDS PROGRESS THROUGH OUR CAMP LEVELS? Some of our camp descriptions may sound the same, but our camps are very different at each developmental stage. Here’s an example of how we treat each group differently (using Camp YMCA and Camp Riveredge camps as an example): Keeping with our mission to promote the spiritual, mental, physical and social development of individuals and foster a sense of responsibility in the community, the following concepts are introduced through fun and engaging games and play. SPRING BREAK
MARCH 27-31, 2017
EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS AT CAMP RIVEREDGE At Camp Riveredge, campers will experience the fun of outdoor camp—right in the city! Outdoor enthusiasts will spend two full days exploring forests and wide-open spaces. Traditional camp games and active challenges will keep them busy - rain, snow or shine! All camps include some of the same activities, but are modified for each developmental stage to keep camp fun, engaging and challenging for all ages. Camp Riveredge is a year-round camp located at Sandy Beach in southwest Calgary.
We make getting to camp easy. In the summer months there is a bus service to and from the Gray Family Eau Claire, Melcor YMCA at Crowfoot and Shawnessy YMCA locations. There is an additional cost for this service. *Note: There is no before or after care available at Camp Riveredge.
HUMMINGBIRDS (6-7Y) A great introduction to making friends and enjoying adventures in the outdoors, Hummingbird campers will learn to make strong connections with others as well as with the natural world. They will participate in many on-site activities such as outdoor living skills, big group games, arts and crafts, challenge course, archery, theme days and more. This is a fantastic opportunity for campers to gain confidence in their skills in the outdoors in a safe and supportive environment. 118680

ADVENTURERS (10-11Y)
CHALLENGERS (12-13Y)
Get ready for action-packed fun and activities. In this camp, kids will learn understanding and responsibility, try new things and make new friends. Activities include arts and crafts, gym time, group games, recreational swimming and environmental awareness.
Reach for new heights of success and self awareness through mental, social and physical challenges and recreation. Environmental awareness, weight floor and fitness activities, along with more familiar games, sports and crafts will challenge participants to reinforce interpersonal skills and self confidence.

We make getting to camp easy. In the summer months there is a bus service to and from the Gray Family Eau Claire, Melcor YMCA at Crowfoot and Shawnessy YMCA locations for an additional charge.
