YMCA of the East Valley | 2017 Annual Report
DARWIN
BARNETT
CEO | YMCA of the East Valley On October 9th, we will celebrate our 130th year as an association. Established in 1887, our organization has since become cemented into the foundation of the cities we serve. In the past 130 years, the YMCA of the East Valley has risen up to respond to the most pressing needs facing individuals and families in our community. Our annual report is an opportunity to see the Y’s work, not just in facts and figures but through stories of those that we serve.
Throughout this report, we’ll introduce you to individuals with powerful stories about how the Y has made an outstanding difference in their life. Their stories are not just inspirational; they’re reflective of the obstacles that many of our members experience. Our annual theme, This is Y, captures the Y’s unique ability to not only identify the needs of our community but fight tirelessly to resolve them. From working to lower the high rates of diabetes to offering a drowning prevention program,
the work we have done in the past year has provided opportunity for thousands to live their best life. We hope that our annual report provides a glimpse of the transformative power of community. Each of you have aided in our efforts to cultivate the supportive environment that allows for memberships to feel safe and encouraged within our walls. Together, we are forging a brighter future, one opportunity at a time.

social media and streaming services, technology has altered the way that many kids and teens spend their time outside of school. These new hobbies can chip away from the free time kids have to stay active and moving.
THIS IS Y The first step for building up a healthier generation is by creating opportunity for all to participate in life-changing programs. With our Financial Assistance program, we provide the opportunity for kids and teens in our community to exercise in our programs or fitness center. From The Great Y Circus to youth basketball, the Y not only makes fitness and physical activity accessible, we make it fun. By offering innovative programming, we inspire kids to set aside their phones and get moving. Not only do we focus
on fitness, we provide chances for kids to engage mentally through STEM programming or cooking classes. Our work allows for more and more kids to enjoy physical fitness, academic enrichment programs and healthy living classes. By extending an opportunity for all families, we work tirelessly each day to improve the health of our community’s youth and instill healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
ANASTASIYA
BELSKA
At only 16 years old, Anastasiya set off with her family to move to the United States from Ukraine. New to the country, Anastasiya found work in the Y’s Aquatics Department and began adjusting to her life in the United States.
With a bad concussion and a spinal injury, Anastasiya’s injuries kept her from soaring through the air in aerial acts. Instead of getting discouraged, she focused on rebuilding her strength and flexibility.
“It’s hard to move in general,” shared Anastasiya, “but when you move across the globe to a new continent with a new language, it feels overwhelmingly difficult. Getting connected at the Y made all the difference in adjusting to this new country and culture.”
Anastasiya found a source of motivation from Circus; it was a community of individuals that encouraged her to strive to be her best.
It was while working at the Y that Anastasiya discovered The Great Y Circus. After attending one of the shows, Anastasiya felt compelled to perform in the Y’s Circus. Although older than most firsttime circus participants, Anastasiya relied on her background in dance to help her excel in the circus arts. She auditioned for the Y’s summer circus program and began her introduction to the world of circus. Quickly, Anastasiya found herself connected to a new community. Not only had the Y helped with her assimilating to the U.S., the Y gave her the opportunity to build a tight-knit group of friends. In the 2016-2017 Circus Season, Anastasiya was in a car accident.
“It felt like an uphill battle to get back to where I was after my accident but I was fueled by a passion and love for Circus. That love and community I had supporting me, pushed me forward when it would have been much easier to stay stuck. I wouldn’t have been able to make the great strides in my recovery process without the Y.” With sheer determination and her passion in place, Anastasiya not only improved her endurance but was able to participate in the Great Y Circus show in May 2017. “I remember the exact moment that I first saw the Y’s cause in action,” said Anastasiya. “It was during my first curtain call. I couldn’t get over what I was witnessing. We had so many performers from walks of life, all ethnicities, all backgrounds come together to create something bigger than a show. We came together to create a community.”
She says, “It felt like an uphill battle to get back to where I was after my accident but I was fueled by a passion and love for Circus.”

These statistics illustrate a clear issue in communities across the United States. Too
THIS IS Y
To solve this problem in our community, the YMCA of the East Valley piloted an aquatic program that would make water safety accessible. Safety Around Water, better known as SAW, introduces children to vital safety skills. From general safety tips to floating techniques, each child that takes the class walks away with newfound skills and confidence while they’re in water. In the summer of 2016, the Y served over 404 children. Since then, the Y has served 745 in our SAW program. It remains a priority for our organization to be an
advocate for water safety and drowning prevention in the communities we serve.
Due to the generosity of our donors, the Y is working alongside Redlands Unified School District to provide Safety Around Water to all second graders in Redlands. The Y is closing the gaps and eradicating the barriers that stand in the way of children learning water safety skills. Through the support of our donors, we are working each day to reduce and eliminate child drownings in our community. In 2018, we expect to serve at least 1,200 youth.

children learned water safety skills in our pools.
In the past year, 745 kids entered into our pools to learn water safety skills. From introducing them to floating to teaching them about pool rules, the Y forged an opportunity for hundreds of kids to learn life-saving skills they may have never had otherwise. In May 2017, the Redlands YMCA became home to second graders from Franklin and McKinley Elementary school. In an effort to

make water safety accessible, the YMCA and the Redlands Unified School District worked closely together to ensure that water safety education was a part of elementary student’s curriculum.
“With 26 kids in my class, I was really shocked by how many of them hadn’t had the opportunity to go into a pool,” shared Christie Moore, a second grade teacher at McKinley Elementary.
Several of the students that participated had never had any formal swim lessons. For many of them, attending the Y’s Safety Around Water program was their first experience in a pool.
Across our aquatic center, the enthusiasm was tangible. Groups of students listened attentively to their instructors, waiting for their chance to try out their new skills. The kids weren’t the only
ones excited about Safety Around Water, both parents and teachers alike could not believe the growth and enthusiasm they saw after each session. “Some of our kids that might have trouble in school fitting in, finding their place or have bad behavior in the classroom are succeeding when they’re in the water. They’re calmer and happier. They found a positive
outlet that keeps them engaged,” said Christie. After completing Safety Around Water, 180 second grade students left the Y with not just new safety skills but a newfound confidence. “I had a student that was afraid of the water when we began. Her dad didn’t think she would participate in the class. By the second day, she was jumping
in with no fear. Safety Around Water was life-changing for her,” shared Christie. The Y has ambitious plans to extend the opportunity to 1200 kids in our community. Through the support of our donors, we will continue to advocate for water safety access for all kids in our community.

California adults live with a chronic disease.
THIS IS WHY There are many barriers that hinder those in our community from pursuing a healthier lifestyle. Inability to afford access to healthy living programs and fitness facilities remains one of the top obstacles prohibiting many from being able to live an active, healthy life. The challenges facing our community aren’t just related to income. Many feel isolated and disconnected from their neighbors. Others lack a safe
environment to explore new interests and pursue a healthier lifestyle. That’s where the Y steps in. We not only eliminate the barriers prohibiting families and individuals from wellness programs to better their lives, we provide a safe, encouraging environment in which to do so.
THIS IS Y The Y is a second home. It is a safe haven for so many individuals in our community. Where many may find themselves lost, the Y gives them direction. It is within our walls that we witness those in our community develop lifelong healthy habits. Many of our members not only benefit from Financial Assistance, they benefit from the unique, supportive environment of the Y. From attending our community wellness classes to working alongside a personal trainer, no matter what program our members participate in, they can find encouragement to be their best self. The Y works each day to cultivate an environment in which individuals from all walks of life can feel welcomed and
accepted. At the Y, many of our members have chronic illnesses or disabilities that may hinder them from joining traditional gyms. We provide a safe, encouraging environment that allows all individuals the opportunity and support they need to reach their goals. We welcome all with open arms, creating a diverse, inclusive organization. Due to our generous donors, the Y is able to provide possibility to all. Removing the financial barriers and cultivating an encouraging environment for all is vital for forging a stronger, healthier community.
DARREN
MARTIN It has been 18 years since Darren first learned he had Multiple Sclerosis. Since it is a disease that attacks the central nervous system, much of the structure and routine of Darren’s life vanished after his diagnosis. Despite the challenges of living with MS, Darren lives each day with infectious passion and purpose. But the road to achieving his positive attitude and outlook took courage and determination. He battled with depression and suffered great personal losses following his diagnosis. However, Darren came out from these dark moments with a redefined look on life. “Being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis was the best thing that ever happened to me because it taught me how to live,” shared Darren. Today, Darren is a testament to positive
