CONNECTING THE DOTS YMCA of the East Valley 2016 Annual Report

“ Connecting the Dots is rooted in the belief that where society falls short, the Y steps in.”

Darwin Barnett CEO It has been an incredible year for the YMCA of the East Valley. In these pages, we offer tangible measurements of our year in numbers served and people reached. While these numbers are vital and highlight the great growth we’ve experienced, it is just a glimpse at the impact the Y has on our members and surrounding community. Our annual theme, Connecting the Dots, is rooted in the belief that where society falls short, the Y steps in. Each day, we have connected members in our organization to the resources and programs they need to live healthy, happy lives. We have provided opportunity for those in our community to connect with their neighbors and forge impactful friendships with those around them. This past year has deepened our understanding of the power of community. We’ve continued to serve over 35,139 members in our area and have widened our reach by providing more programs available to both members and non-members. We’ve cheered on our basketball players, laughed with our Day Campers, and encouraged our members to continue on their wellness journey. The connections our members can find here is one of the greatest benefits of our organization. Through this past year, we have seen our members not only connect to the resources they needed but to each other. New friendships are formed during soccer practice. Families reconnect during our annual holiday events. Bonds are made and strengthened each day at the Y. We believe that is the key to what makes our organization so influential in the lives of our members. Although our annual report shares the Y’s achievements in the past year, it is in the day-to-day that we see the power of the Y, each day rich with memories and stories. The warm welcomes, the pats-on-the-back, the opportunity to try something new: all of it combines to create an environment that is encouraging to each person that comes here. After all, where there is a Y, there is an opportunity for betterment, for fresh starts and new passions. Most importantly, where there is a Y, there is a community to connect to. Darwin Barnett

CONNECTING THE COMMUNITY For a Better Community, For a Better Us™ The Y believes that positive change happens when each person is given the chance to connect to the resources they need and to others in their community. By focusing on filling the gaps in our community, we have been able to provide opportunities for genuine connection and growth. From meals shared at Operation Thanksgiving to Easter eggs hunts at the Brunch with a Bunny, our year has been filled with loud laughs and bright smiles. We have widened our scope of service through new community-wide events and programs, ranging from outdoor initiatives to community gardens. As we opened our doors wider to all, we witnessed families find themselves at home in our organization. Each event brought us closer to our goal of a unified community as we introduced new faces to our organization and connected families to the resources they needed. We are creating a stronger community through events and programs where connections can form and grow.

Connecting in Healthy Living From group exercise to nutrition education classes, the Y aims to connect individuals and families with wellness programs that encourage a healthy lifestyle. As a leader in health and wellness in our community, the Y not only connects our members to quality resources, we connect them to a supportive community found within our organization. We stand firm in the belief that living a healthy lifestyle is more than just being active: a healthy lifestyle is about maintaining a balanced spirit, mind, and body. Through the Y, thousands in the community are able to reach that healthy balance through our wellness programs that fuse fitness with friendship. When there is access to wellness programs, there is an opportunity to take the first step towards a healthier lifestyle and when there is support from others, there is momentum to keep moving forward.

“ When I come to the Y, I have this warm feeling because I know that I am surrounded by a family. The staff is friendly and make each member feel safe and loved.

Every year we host an Annual Campaign set with ambitious goals. It is through the determination of our dedicated volunteers and donors that the YMCA is able to move our mission forward and grow our cause. All of the funds raised from our Annual Campaign go directly into our Financial Assistance program, which helps subsidize all of our programming, so we can work towards a connected community. Noah’s Story

It was a car accident that changed Noah’s life. A young Marine stationed in Okinawa, Japan, Noah’s car accident caused severe injuries that had him medically discharged from the military and sent back to the States to recuperate. In the long road of recovery that followed, Noah found himself steadily gaining weight as his activity levels were hindered by his injuries. Noah’s determination to create a healthier life led him to the Redlands YMCA. Immediately supported by Y members, Noah made the decision to apply to work in the Fitness Center shortly after becoming a member himself. As part of the Y’s staff, Noah motivated members with his dedication to reclaim his health. Now having the support of his coworkers and Y members, Noah’s wellness journey was filled with encouragement. At the Y, Noah found a second family that motivated him and rooted for his success. Although his journey came with bumps and setbacks, the goal that Noah set out to accomplish became a reality. After months of training and working hard each day, Noah had lost over 100 pounds.

Noah not only reached his weight loss goals... He inspired an entire gym. “ I had met a member that told me how much he was struggling to lose weight so I told him my story, hoping that it might help motivate him. A few months later, he came up to me and told me he had now lost 80 pounds and that I was his biggest motivation. He kept saying that I changed his life but in reality, he’s the one that changed mine.” To this day, YMCA members look to Noah and see that it is possible to reach your goals, especially when you are given the support and encouragement from others.

When you know how difficult something is, you want to give people going through the same things all the support and help you can. I want to give back the support I got to help others accomplish their goals.

Connecting in Health

Frank’s Story

Frank set a goal of reclaiming his health. In Spring of 2015, Frank got the life-changing news that he had type 2 diabetes. Although his diagnosis came at great shock, Frank wasted no time in forging a healthier path for himself and his family. Having been a YMCA member since 1999, Frank knew that he had the right tools to overcome his diagnosis and live a healthy lifestyle alongside his family. The first step was changing his diet. With the help of his wife, Frank created a meal plan that swapped unhealthy meals with healthier alternatives. His plan didn’t just stop there: Frank intensified his workout routine and soon became a regular at the Highland YMCA. Four months after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, Frank returned to the doctor for a reassessment. With his new routine, Frank had not only lost over 20 pounds but his test results had shown that he was pre-diabetic. Motivated by this great progress, Frank launched another 4-month plan to decrease his pre-diabetes disposition.

“ I told myself, if I can beat it, I can bury it. I felt empowered and I was on a mission to meet my goal.” Now over a year after his original diagnosis, Frank is running 8 miles a day and has lost over 50 pounds. That Spring day in 2015 when he first learned about his diagnosis set Frank into action to reclaim his health and set a positive example of healthy living for not just his family but for Highland YMCA members. Frank’s determination created incredible results, the most profound being that he had completely reversed his diabetic status. After almost a year of training, Frank is no longer diabetic and works each day to ensure that he will continue beating diabetes for the rest of his life.

“ I found so much support and encouragement at the Y, from both the staff and the members. As I kept working towards my goals, I kept reminding myself that I am using this opportunity to set a positive example for others.

Fatima’s Story

Fatima found a bright future for her family. Graduating college was a dream that always felt too far out of reach for Fatima but in July 2016, Fatima made it her reality. Graduating with her Nursing Assistant certificate, Fatima made it one-step closer towards her goal of becoming a Registered Nurse and serving others. Losing both of her parents at a very young age, Fatima spent most of her childhood years in foster care. As she grew older, Fatima had a child and found herself as a single mom struggling to make ends meet. She promised herself and her daughter, Jazleene, that she would give all she could to make sure Jazleene did not face the same experiences she underwent. Fueled by her desire to create a better life for her child, she enrolled in school but still faced the challenges of finding child care for her daughter. Knowing that the Y had a reputation for providing quality child care programs for all in the community, Fatima enrolled Jazleene in the San Bernardino YMCA’s Day Camp.

“The Y filled in the gaps where I couldn’t and because of that, I could focus on my education and the opportunity I had to make a better life for my daughter.” Not only did Fatima feel safe with her daughter being at the Y, she loved that her daughter was able to have a summer of fun alongside the new friends she met at Day Camp. From the beach to water parks, Jazleene participated in exciting activities and field trips that she may have missed otherwise. “ Without the financial assistance from the Y, I wouldn’t have been able to finish my certificate program. I felt confident that my daughter was in safe hands at the Y and I was able to focus on my schooling. The community I have found at the San Bernardino Y has become my family.”

Connecting Youth with Opportunity The Y nurtures the potential of every child and teen by supporting their unique youth development journey through creative programming. With the resources and tools provided through our programs, the Y ensures that all youth can have the opportunity to fulfill their potential. The increased demands on today’s families call for increased support and programming so that children can receive the encouragement they need to be successful. Our CAPS program promotes achievement, strong values and a positive self-image. More than 5,000 children per day at 38 school sites in San Bernardino and Highland attend. Children receive snacks, homework and academic assistance, recreation and enrichment programs in a safe environment. The Y is the starting point for many youth to learn about becoming and staying active, and developing healthy habits they’ll carry with them throughout their lives. Whether it’s gaining the confidence that comes from learning to swim or building the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship, participating in sports at the Y is about building the whole child, from the inside out.

Connecting with Social Responsiblity The power of the Y rests in our ability to bring people together in order to create meaningful, life-changing connections. As we work to fill the gaps in our community, we see firsthand how individuals and families flourish when given the care and resources they need. From vital services offered through our Legal Aid Clinic to the water safety skills learned in our Safety Around Water program, our commitment to our community has helped connect the dots for many. Through the generosity of our Heritage Club donors, we can assure that the Y’s impact will continue to positively influence future generations and solidify our organization into the foundation of the community.
