VOLUNTEERS ARE THE HEART OF OUR Y During 2021, 2,148 volunteers provided 14,547 hours of service throughout our Association as board members, storytellers, coaches, and program volunteers.
Dear Friends Our Y has faced some uncertain and difficult times in recent years, but we have all come out of it so much stronger and always ready to serve our members and community where we are needed most. While 2020 was the year where we adjusted to the changes of the COVID-19 pandemic and found ways to continue serving where and how we were able to, 2021 was the year where we would continue that work and begin shifting to how the Y would operate exiting a pandemic.
Our Community Impact
BY THE NUMBERS
Throughout 2021, we made sure that all of our spaces, facilities, and programs offered the highest levels of cleanliness and safety for our members, staff, and community at large.
1,647 young people participated in Summer Exploration Academies (day camps) at our branches, exploring new interests and cultivating friendships. 1,850 campers experienced adventure and the great outdoors at overnight camp at YMCA Camp Hanes, while another 746 campers participated in day camp at the scenic campsite. 2,089 youth had a safe place to go outside of school hours each month at the Y’s Before and After School Academies in the 2020-2021 school year. 412 youth in the Latino Achievers, Black Achievers, Youth & Government, and Youth Achievers programs learned about the tools needed for success in higher education and career opportunities in the 2020-2021 school year. More than 1,000 healthy meals and snacks were given to youth daily during out of school activities in 2021. 1,263 pints of blood were collected at blood drives hosted across the Y association in 2021, saving 3,789 lives. In total, 56 blood drives were hosted at our Ys.
And the school year wasn’t the only time we made sure that kids were able to reach their full potential. Our Summer Exploration Academies — or summer day camps — continued to bring joy to campers every week as they learned new games and participated in activities with new friends, all under the supervision of positive role models. Plus, YMCA Camp Hanes invited campers to its annual summer day camps and overnight camp experiences. Campers there were able to make once in a lifetime connections to fellow campers and to nature on this remarkable camp site we are so fortunate to call a part of our Y Association. There is nothing the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina cannot do when we all work together. These past few years are a testament to the resilience, hard work, and sacrifices of our staff — and to the trust and support from our board members, donors, volunteers, and the community. We are so grateful for you all and the work you do to make the Y possible. Thank you for your continued support. In Spirit, Mind, and Body, Wesley Davis Chief Volunteer Officer
More than 90% of YMCA Literacy participants improved their English language, job, and interpersonal skills in 2021.
04
During the spring 2021 school semester, many of our Ys continued to offer a hybrid of E-Learning Academy and Before and After School Academy. These programs made sure that all students — whether their school districts were participating in remote learning or had reopened their classroom doors — had safe, positive spaces to learn and thrive while their parents were at work during the week. We made sure our teens continued to have access to programs such as Black Achievers, Latino Achievers, and Youth & Government — both virtually and in-person — to ensure these students could continue the work they started in these spaces to further their academic and professional ambitions.

YMCA of Northwest North Carolina
WILLIAM BURNS
STRONG AWARDS
Yo u c o u l d s a y t h a t W i l l i a m B u r n s h a s g r o w n u p a t t h e Y.
He first came to the Y in its youth sports programs, learning the value of sportsmanship at a young age.
ALEXANDER COUNTY FAMILY YMCA I Gary Herman
Fast forward to today, and William, a senior and student body president at Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem, just completed his one-year term as Governor for the Youth and Government’s statewide delegation.
DAVIE FAMILY YMCA I William Cockerham
“The Y brought out my competitive edge, but it also taught me how to handle moments of triumph and defeat — the mindset that I used during Youth and Government elections and leading the delegates of North Carolina. Not everything I have ever done has been a success, but with the Y I sure have learned a lot about how to handle myself, and these were lessons I learned from coaches, advisers, and a lot of lessons I had to learn myself.”

William Burns has been selected as the first-ever recipient of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina’s Youth Leadership Award for 2021. This award is given to a Y member or program participant, under the age of 18 years old, who has shown exemplary service and dedication to the YMCA of NWNC.
STATESVILLE FAMILY YMCA I Rob Gill
At the 2021 Annual Youth and Government Conference, William was elected Governor of the statewide delegation. The conference is typically held in Raleigh, but because of COVID-19, the last two conferences have been virtual.
WILKES FAMILY YMCA I Ida Maude Collins
“I had worked to get to that position and worked so hard in my other roles, but the platform of Governor helped me reach people and impact people, which is my ultimate goal daily. The experience was one I will never forget, and the ups and downs of all that came with it with COVID and pivoting really taught me more about leading than most things — but I will take with it the relationships and life skills learned and cherish those things forever.” William was a part of his high school’s Youth and Government chapter for four years. Youth and Government is a high school age “hands-on” leadership experience in State Government, with the goal to empower teens to learn how to make an impact on their community.

As of April 2022, William said he plans to attend Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, but is on the waitlist for Wake Forest University. William continues to support the Y mission of “helping all people reach their God-given potential in spirit, mind and body.”

SONYA GLENN
CHAIRMAN ROUNDTABLE AND MAJOR DONORS
Sonya Glenn has been quietly transformig lives for more than 20 years.
Sonya Glenn has been quietly transforming lives for more than 20 years as a behind-the-scenes changemaker in the Y’s Black Achievers Program. Her dedication has enabled participants to learn, grow and thrive in school, as well as igniting passions for life after high school. “The program is important for the Y because it shows a commitment to the African-American community and it has changed the lives of every person that has been part of it,” Sonya said. While this program is vital in our community, Sonya is vital to its success. Now, Sonya is also the newest inductee of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina’s Red Triangle Society and the first African-American woman to receive the honor. Created in 2002, the Red Triangle Society is the highest honor a YMCA volunteer can receive. Recipients demonstrate long-term and significant commitment, enthusiasm, and dedication to the YMCA mission. “I was totally shocked. I had no idea my name was even considered for such a prestigious award. I am thankful to the Y for thinking of me and selecting me for this award.” Sonya started volunteering with Black Achievers in its second year at the Y, and has brought experience and institutional knowledge to each new school year with the program. The YMCA Black Achievers program is an academic achievement and career development initiative for middle school and high school youth and teens, which helps students discover academic and professional pathways that best suit them for after high school graduation. “For me, the program has been a great asset to the community in showcasing some of the most promising African-American students in the city. The Black Achievers program has provided students with opportunities to visit schools and places that they would most likely not have had the opportunity to visit. It opened students’ eyes to opportunities that they did not see possible.” Sonya has also been instrumental in key committees for Black Achievers. She served on the committee responsible for the end of the year Black Achievers Gala, which celebrates the students and awards scholarships to its soon to be graduating seniors. She’s also served on the Scholarship Committee and has been vital in soliciting funds to support the program and the Y. We are so honored to have Sonya as our newest Red Triangle Society member.
