CELEBRATING OUR NEW PARTNERSHIP FOR THE FUTURE Partners for a Healthy Community
AT THE Y, WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY FOCUSING ON THREE KEY AREAS: YOUTH DEVELOPMENT, HEALTHY LIVING AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY. WE WORK TO STRENGTHEN OUR COMMUNITIES BY INVESTING IN OUR KIDS, OUR HEALTH AND OUR NEIGHBORS. IN 2022, THROUGH ANNUAL IMPACT FUND SUPPORT AND GRANTS, OUR Y PROVIDED OVER $3.2 MILLION IN CHARITABLE ASSISTANCE, SCHOLARSHIPS, SUBSIDIZED AND FREE PROGRAMS TO MEMBERS AND PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS.
VOLUNTEERS ARE THE HEART OF OUR Y
During 2022, 3,083 volunteers provided 53,432 hours of service throughout our Association as board members, storytellers, coaches, and program volunteers.
Dear Friends
Our Community Impact
BY THE NUMBERS
Over the last 135 years, the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina has grown from a single branch in downtown Winston-Salem to 16 branches serving seven counties. Through the years, our Association has remained resilient despite the ever-evolving world to become the institution relied upon by our community for our dedication to serving all. This proved to be a year of transition, as our Y had several long-tenured staff members begin service in a new role and many others joining the Y staff family for the first time.
After navigating through the last few years, we are in a place of financial stability. Our membership continues to grow, which strengthens our financial position but more importantly gives us the ability to impact many more lives. Our Annual Impact Fund achieved its fundraising goal for the first time in three years, allowing us to ensure access to programs that improve the health and well-being of over 160,000 across our communities.
1,568 campers experienced adventure and the great outdoors during overnight camp at YMCA Camp Hanes, while another 830 campers attended day camp.
We spent $900,000 on new equipment for our members, potential members and guests.

Number of
Nearly 55,000 meals were served to 2,720 young people in our Summer Day Camps.
$1,534,054 in financial scholarships were given for memberships and programs.
Our board development and engagement efforts were prioritized in 2022. Our initiatives to build our boards and bolster diversity are working. We are increasing our community engagement with our boards and ensuring that they reflect the areas they represent.
1,584 children participated in our fun and enriching Before and After School Academies in the 2021-2022 school year.
youth in the Latino Achievers, Black Achievers, Youth & Government, and Youth Achievers programs learned about the tools needed for success in higher education and career opportunities in the 2021-2022 school year.
270 middle and high school students were provided with a safe space to go outside of school hours through the newly launched Reaching Our Potential teen membership program.
220 students from Title-I schools participated in our free Summer Learning Academies.
86% of YMCA Literacy participants improved their English language, job, and interpersonal skills in 2022.
50 blood drives were hosted across the Association and
1,125 pints of blood were collected, saving 3,375 lives.
The Y has earned a reputation as a problem-solver for community issues. We are addressing challenges facing our youth through Transforming Teens, various Boys and Young Men of Color (BYMOC) initiatives, and the provision of childcare for before and after school, summer, and out of school days. Mentors and our chaplains help undergird our work in reaching kids and showing them how we care. Our efforts are building confidence and connection for our youth, while helping their parents know that their children are in a safe environment.
We are also expanding and redefining the Y through our capital planning. Our commitment to East Winston is demonstrated through ongoing efforts to transform the Winston Lake Family YMCA into the REACH Center. Our capital fundraising for that project has topped $4.5M this year, allowing us to plan for the beginning of construction in early 2024. The Yadkin Family YMCA capital campaign is in its closing stages, and will allow this branch to expand to meet the evolving needs in our community there. A functional training center and group exercise studio are the latest additions to our Kernersville Family YMCA, elevating our approach to fitness in that location. Each of these projects enhances our level of service to our communities, and we are excited about the possibilities ahead.
As we begin to make history for the next 100 years, we are energized by a fresh optimism and a vision for how we can transform our communities. We know that the needs are great, but we also trust that our capacity to meet those needs is up to the challenge. We are here to make sure that all reach their God-given potential in spirit, mind and body, and we will not stop until that transformation is complete! Thank you for partnering with us as change agents in our community! We appreciate all that you do for the YMCA!

CARVER HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH AND GOVERNMENT DELEGATION
Democracy, by definition, is a form of government in which the people have the authority to deliberate and decide legislation and elect representation. While the premise of democracy is to lift the voices of all United States citizens, there are populations who have been historically oppressed, overlooked and underrepresented.
YMCA Youth and Government (YAG) is a civic program that prepares high school students for moral and political leadership by giving them the opportunity to learn about and experience government policies firsthand. Historically however, this program has not been accessible to all students–to all voices.
At this year’s 31st annual YAG conference, where the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina (NWNC) was represented by 152 delegates from high schools across our community, only 22% of those in attendance were students of color.
Through the utilization of a grant from United Way, partnerships with organizations like Dress for Success, and a dedicated team of individuals, the YMCA of NWNC was able to remove the cost and preparation barriers associated with YAG to establish a new delegation at Carver High School.
The delegation was led by Carver High School teacher and former Winston Lake Family YMCA and Mount Tabor High School delegate, Dominique Hill. Under Hill’s direction, students learned the specifics of legislative and judicial framework, parliamentary procedure and constitutional law.
Following months of hard work and preparation, Carver’s first YAG delegation arrived at the four day conference in Raleigh. It was there that they demonstrated their knowledge, skills, growth and their greatest strengths–vulnerability and resilience. In addition to being the newest delegation with no prior conference experience, they were one of three delegations consisting predominantly of people of color.
While they recognized their differences from other delegations, they allowed themselves to be vulnerable and made their presence known by participating in events, engaging in discussions and consistently putting their best foot forward.
Though their proposed bill on a four-day school week did not make it to the Governor’s Cabinet, their willingness to be outside their comfort zone and immerse themselves into the true spirit of democracy was an accomplishment. Additionally, their attendance and engagement was noticed by hundreds of other delegates, advisors and community leaders, warranting valuable conversations on how we–the Y and other community-based organizations–involve and empower more students of color to have a voice in our democracy.
During the conference’s closing session, Carver High School was named the recipient of the Model Delegation award. Being outsiders in every way, these students were elected by their peers as exemplifying the Y’s core values and as deserving of the highest accolade awarded to any participating delegation. They were seen, heard and overcame–becoming agents of change.

RICHARD “RICK” LOUIS FRENCH
Alexander County Family YMCA
For more than two decades, Richard “Rick” French supported the mission and vision of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina through his quiet and influential involvement at the Alexander County Family YMCA. Rick wasn’t simply a board member, he was a visionary that left an impact on everything he got involved with. He led the branch relocation efforts, supported annual and capital fundraising efforts, organized races, advocated for the Y across the community, and had the uncanny ability to connect with others that positioned the Y and its programs for success across the entire community. We are honored to induct Rick French, posthumously, into the Red Triangle Society, as he lost a courageous battle with cancer on December 24, 2022.
“Without a doubt, Rick understood the importance of the Y to the community and exemplified its mission of helping all people reach their God-given potential,” said Alexander County Family YMCA Executive Director Christy Harrington. “He encouraged and motivated everyone he encountered to strive for their very best, including me. He was a true mentor to me personally and professionally sharing his love of running, the Y, our community and God.”
Serving as a county manager in Alexander County for nearly 24 years, he combined his passion for local government and the Y by implementing a strong and ongoing partnership between the Y and Alexander County. Through his efforts county employees received access to the Y at a discounted rate while the county provided monthly support and operational services like mowing, trash pickup and maintenance contracts to the branch.
Rick also helped with fundraising efforts by speaking with potential donors, researching grants and providing personal donations. While serving on the Alexander County Family YMCA board for over 13 years and during his 10 years as board chair, he was always available to brainstorm and discuss board development tactics as well as board member recruitment.
Being an avid runner and an experienced race director, Rick participated in many Y race events. Leading up to a race he would promote the event to secure runners’ attendance and recruit volunteers to ensure it was an efficient and positive experience for all involved. On race day, he would keep time and assist wherever there was a need.
Over the years, he supported the growth of the Y, helping meet community needs with the addition of an outdoor track and soccer field. Following a flood that ruined the Y’s track in 2020, he aided in its repair by providing a workforce and other resources to ensure the track was repaired and safe for the community to enjoy. Additionally, he was involved in numerous conversations strategizing partnerships and funding opportunities that could result in the construction of a pool at the Y.
