PARTNERS FOR A HEALTHY COMMUNITY
AT THE Y, WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY FOCUSING ON THREE KEY AREAS: YOUTH DEVELOPMENT, HEALTHY LIVING AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY. WE WORK TO STRENGTHEN OUR COMMUNITIES BY INVESTING IN OUR KIDS, OUR HEALTH AND OUR NEIGHBORS. IN 2023, THROUGH ANNUAL IMPACT FUND SUPPORT AND GRANTS, OUR Y PROVIDED OVER $3.5 MILLION IN CHARITABLE ASSISTANCE, SCHOLARSHIPS, SUBSIDIZED AND FREE PROGRAMS TO MEMBERS AND PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS.
VOLUNTEERS ARE THE HEART OF OUR Y
During 2023, 3,019 volunteers provided 30,221 hours of service throughout our Association as board members, storytellers, coaches, and program volunteers.

Dear Friends
As we reflect on the amazing year that the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina experienced in 2023, we are filled with gratitude. During a year for the record books, our association produced strong impact and unparalleled growth, while advancing innovative approaches in our work. It takes teamwork to achieve such noteworthy results. Together, we are living out the vision of our new Strategic Plan: creating thriving communities of healthy, kind, and loving people.
The plan, developed and implemented in 2023, is filled with ambitious goals:
Improve Health: Expand and deliver innovative wellness programs that improve health equity and the overall well-being of all people.
Position Youth for Success: Cultivate the health and emotional resilience of our youth so all can maximize their potential.
Elevate Inclusion and Belonging: Increase our reach and impact by removing barriers to the Y resulting in a sense of belonging for all.
Increase Capacity: Grow our resources to ensure we remain relevant, financially sustainable, and committed to meeting the changing needs of the unique communities we serve.
Numerous objectives and strategies are attached to these goals, each with our mission in mind: “helping all people reach their God-given potential in spirit, mind, and body.” The mandate to care for the evolving needs of those we serve is only attainable through joining hands with community partners, in particular Novant Health, our key strategic healthcare partner.
We create healthier families by battling disease through diet and exercise, and providing equitable access to health care. Working with Novant Health to offer free biometric screenings and virtual care clinics, we advocate for healthy lifestyles and preventive care. Senior adults find vital connections at the Y, allowing them to combat loneliness while making choices that help them age with dignity and independence.
The Y’s reputation for shaping young lives is a source of pride and purpose. We are a trusted resource for sports, summer camp and after school care. Partnerships with school systems help align our efforts for students’ academic success. Additionally, the Y has a sharp focus on youth mental health, and is dedicated to ensuring better outcomes by improving self-esteem, building leadership skills, and giving safe spaces for teens to congregate.
People from all walks of life come to the Y because of its welcoming atmosphere. The Y is a true intersection of race, gender, national origin and socio-economic backgrounds. By focusing on our capacity and maximizing our resources, we ensure that more people can access our life-changing amenities. Membership is posting strong growth, allowing us to continue to provide impact. In 2023, our Annual Impact Fund generated $2,647,511, reaching 106.8% of our fundraising goal. This outpouring enabled over 160,000 of our neighbors who need our support to engage in the Y’s enriching programs.
62 blood drives were hosted across the Association and
1,428 pints of blood were collected, saving 4,284 lives.
Using the Strategic Plan as our guidestar, we understand our foundational role in shaping futures for good. Working with like-minded partners, we connect people to opportunities and provide them with the support to stay on the path to more fulfilling lives. Thank you for your generosity and for joining us on this journey to spark community transformation for generations to come.

BRODY DAVIS AND KENDRIANNA SMITH
In a celebration of commitment, compassion and exemplary leadership, the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina proudly recognizes Brody Davis from the Wilkes Family YMCA and Kendrianna Smith from the William G. White, Jr. Family YMCA as the recipients of the 2023 Youth Leadership Award. These remarkable young individuals have demonstrated outstanding dedication to their communities, serving as shining examples of youth leadership and advocacy.
Brody Davis, a beacon of positivity and enthusiasm, embodies the spirit of volunteerism and mentorship. His involvement with Kids on the Run in the summer of 2023 showcased his determination and consistency in making a difference in the lives of others. With contagious excitement and exemplary patience, he earned the admiration of the run’s participants and encouraged their growth as athletes.
Beyond his volunteer work, Brody’s impressive achievements as a second-class Boy Scout on the path to Eagle Scout, alongside his active participation in cross country, track and wrestling at West Wilkes High School, reflect his commitment to excellence in all endeavors. Maintaining a remarkable academic record with A/B honor roll and AP courses, he regularly demonstrates the values of hard work and perseverance.
With a keen sense of initiative and a heart for service, Kendrianna Smith has played a pivotal role in spearheading service projects and initiatives at the William G. White, Jr. Family YMCA. Collaborating with the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications, she created marketing strategies and materials that helped her lead her peers in a Thanksgiving Food Drive for Second Harvest Food Bank. Dynamic and compassionate, she exemplifies the next generation of leadership and advocacy within her community.
As a seventh grader at Wiley Middle School and an active participant in the YMCA’s Reaching Our Potential program, Kendrianna regularly exhibits the values of ambition and empathy. Her willingness to support her peers, help others and compassion make her a true asset to the community and the Y.
In honoring Brody Davis and Kendrianna Smith as recipients of the Youth Leadership Award, the YMCA of NWNC celebrates their achievements and impact on their community. As they continue to inspire others and lead by example, Brody and Kendrianna embody the core values of the YMCA, fostering a legacy of service and leadership for generations to come.

Red Triangle Award Winner
EDIE HOLLAND
Statesville Family YMCA and YMCA of Northwest North Carolina
Edie Holland, an embodiment of leadership and advocacy, stands as a testament to the power of service and collaboration. Her dedicated volunteerism has benefited the residents of Iredell County for over 40 years. Edie’s efforts in the last 15 years have been pivotal to the mission and vision of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina (NWNC), leading the merger efforts for the Statesville Family YMCA and chairing the YMCA of NWNC association board. Not only has she supported capital and annual fundraising, she has advocated for the Y across the community and continues her service on the Statesville Y board. We are honored to induct Edie Holland into the Red Triangle Society for her remarkable contributions that have left an indelible mark on the YMCA and the broader community.
Edie’s work as a Y leader began in 2009 when she joined the Board of Directors at the YMCA of Iredell County, what is now the Statesville Family YMCA. A year after joining the board, she became the YMCA of Iredell County’s Chief Volunteer Officer. Her leadership and strategic foresight was crucial during a pivotal moment in the Y’s history as she led the ad-hoc group that determined its merger with the YMCA of NWNC association from 2010 to 2012. Amidst challenges and uncertainties, she emerged as a guiding force, instrumental in navigating the transition and ensuring the sustained vitality of the Statesville Family YMCA in Iredell County.
In addition to her instrumental role in organizational governance, Edie’s dedication extended to grassroots efforts, spearheading fundraising initiatives as the Annual Impact Fund Captain and assisting with capital campaigns that resulted in the Statesville YMCA’s growth and expansion. These projects included a new youth wing, lobby and the enhancement of facilities, improving the Y experience for generations to come.
Her tenure as the YMCA of NWNC’s Chief Volunteer Officer from 2017 to 2018 marked a historic milestone, as she became the fifth woman and first woman from outside Forsyth County to hold the esteemed position. Her leadership on the Association Board and its finance and endowment committees exemplifies her commitment to advancing the YMCA’s mission and vision, driving meaningful change and innovation.
Edie’s impact transcends the confines of the YMCA, resonating deeply within the fabric of the community. Her unwavering advocacy for partnership and collaboration has fostered a culture of mutual support, strengthening the YMCA’s role as a cornerstone of community resilience and well-being. She embodies the core values of the YMCA, inspiring others to reach their full potential and fostering a legacy of service and impact. As we honor her induction into the Red Triangle Society, we celebrate not only her remarkable achievements but also the enduring spirit of community and collaboration that defines the YMCA of NWNC.
