Lives changed forever
Because of YOU YMCA of Oakville Community Impact Report 2012
This is no ordinary piece of paper. It’s what remains of Josephine, a life-sized illustration created by young girls — then ripped apart piece by piece as they recall every insult or abuse they’ve experienced with bullies. But Josephine is much more than a drawing. For many people today, Josephine represents feelings of being torn apart or broken, with little hope of being put back together. As a mother, I wonder what can be done to ease the pain of children who feel this way. If these kids had more support, guidance and a safe place to belong, would there be less bullying, less anxiety or less suicide? This is one of the reasons why I am so proud to be involved with the YMCA. I get to share a special journey with people like Chris, who finally believes in himself and has hope for his future. Or moms like Jennifer, who no longer feel isolated or depressed, or young, vulnerable girls like Emma who can now stand up to bullying. These are real people in our community that we help every day. Your support helps them find courage, make connections and discover a sense of community. Their lives are changed forever — because of you. In 2012, the YMCA of Oakville accomplished many great things, but we are most proud of the impact we’ve made on people’s lives. Looking ahead, I know there are many more stories yet to be written. I invite you to join us as we help build a healthier community – one person, one story at a time.

I’ve been bullied for as long as I can remember. When I was in Grade 1, I was the tallest kid in class and I stood out. Kids made fun of me, calling me names like “tree“, “giraffe” and “four-eyes”. Recently, my best friend also started making fun of me. She talked about me behind my back, and made me feel fat and embarrassed. Our friendship ended because she made me feel horrible all the time. Being bullied made me feel like an outcast. Most nights I would go home crying and fall asleep sad and lonely. Sometimes, I had thoughts of hurting myself. But then I found TAG at the Y and a place where I felt safe. At TAG, I could talk about my experiences with other girls who have also been bullied. I’ve made new friends who accept me for who I am, and I’ve learned not to care what bullies say about me. I finally have a place to belong. At TAG, I can say anything, and no one judges me or calls me names. When I look back, I’m glad I’m not friends with the person I thought was my “best friend” anymore, because through TAG, I got the chance to become me. Today, I’m much stronger, and I don’t think about hurting myself anymore. - Emma*
Because of YOU Emma can be courageous

As girls enter adolescence, from ages 9 to 13, their confidence declines sharply and they experience higher rates of depression. We are grateful to the private donors who have helped us launch another Together As Girls (TAG) program in the Clearview neighbourhood and helped more girls be courageous.
Emma* is a TAG participant who wanted to remain anonymous. We know one day she will have the courage to show her beautiful face.

By the age of 16, Chris had seen more heartbreak than most people see in a lifetime. I didn’t have anyone. I was living on my own in a rough neighbourhood, struggling to pay my rent and go to school. My life was about drugs, partying and hanging out. One day I found out that two of my good friends had died in a shooting. Just a few hours earlier, I was talking to them. That could have been me. This was not the life I wanted. I moved away and cut off all ties with my former life, but I was broke, overweight – and without hope. Then one day I walked into the Y and saw the basketball court. I smiled, so excited just to play somewhere that was so nice. It was a move that changed my life forever. I came back every day, and for the first time, I felt accepted. It’s like they saw the “real me”. I started to lose weight and gain confidence. I got a job as a counsellor in a YMCA before and after school program. And it was here that I found my purpose: To make a positive impact on kids and to guide them to make better choices than I did. Today, I have achieved things I never thought possible. The Y gave me that. They gave me opportunity, pulled my potential out of me and showed me what I could become. And truly, from the bottom of my heart, I will always be thankful. - Chris

As a new parent I thought I was doing everything wrong. When my son Keelan was born, he cried day and night. I had no experience as a parent and I was overwhelmed. I felt very isolated. Then I heard about the free Mother Goose program at the Y. For the first time since Keelan was born, I was able to talk about my feelings with other moms. We shared stories, tips and advice and I realized we were all going through the same things. While we sang songs and lullabies with instructors, I learned how to connect with Keelan and be a better parent. Just as Steps and Stages has provided me with a sense of community, it also does this for Keelan. Every week he is surrounded by people who cheer him on as he grows and develops. He has no problem saying hi to everyone he passes because of Steps and Stages and the sense of community he gets there. The relationships he has developed will only help to make him a stronger, more independent child as he grows up. Coming here has changed our life. With a second child now on the way, I feel completely different than before. I’m excited to connect with my new baby and I feel much more confident in my parenting skills. I’m also looking forward to introducing him or her to our Y family, and I know they’re excited for me too. - Jennifer
Because of YOU Jennifer is a confident parent

I needed a place to belong. I joined Youth Leader Corps because my friend was in it, and it looked like fun. But it soon became much more than a program. Youth Leader Corps became my family and a place to belong. With Youth Leader Corps, I’ve been able to make a real impact by helping other youth become the best they can be. We work together, share ideas and plan activities that are meaningful to everyone. I feel that Youth Leader Corps is almost like training for the real world. While other kids are sitting at home playing video games, we’re learning life skills — important things that prepare you for the next stage in life. The leadership experience I’ve gained means that I’ve been able to take on more leadership roles at school. Personally, my confidence has gained a huge boost, and I’ve now realized what my potential is. I’m most proud of the experience I’ve gained working with youth at this stage in their life because they’re still trying to figure out who they are. And as a youth leader, I have the chance to guide them on their path, and that’s my favourite thing to do. - Sarah

Thanks to you, lives have changed forever. Oakville is a community characterized by caring, proud, passionate people who are dedicated to ensuring the best for those who live here. It has given me great pride to work alongside you — my YMCA family of staff and volunteers, our caring donors and collaborative community partners. The extraordinary things we accomplished in 2012 were because of you. You helped us respond to the needs of our growing community. You helped us reach out in new and innovative ways, take our expertise to neighbourhoods throughout Oakville and strengthen our people and the capacity of our community. Lives have changed forever. Together, we’ve made kids safer, given some a second chance, helped shape the future of young lives and helped families who are struggling find hope and health. People just like Chris, Jennifer, Emma and Sarah. While our impact can be visualized through their stories, there are also other successes and highlights from 2012 that I’m so proud to include on this page. Looking ahead to the future of this community, I know there are many more lives to impact and many more stories to tell. I invite you to share in this incredible journey as we help build a healthier community.
