Event Schedule
Sunday June 2, 2013, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Join us for healthy, fun and FREE activities for the whole family!
Physical Activity Levels Only 7% of 5- to 11-year-olds in Canada, and 4% of 12- to 17-year-olds, meet the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines for Children and Youth, which recommend at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. Rising rates of obesity and related chronic disease tell us that getting kids active should be a top priority. YMCA Healthy Kids Day is one way YMCAs across Canada demonstrate our ongoing commitment to changing this trend. By giving kids a little encouragement and awareness, they can embrace a more active and healthy lifestyle. Sources: 2012 & 2013 Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Cards on Physical Activity on Children and Youth.
YMCA Healthy Kids Day is just the beginning. The YMCA also supports Healthy Me Week, June 2-8. Healthy Me Week is an annual, week-long awareness campaign in June led by a group of concerned media and not-for-profit community partners wishing to address, promote and sustain healthy, active living among Canadian families. Visit healthymeweek.ca.
Why kids need active play Play has also been shown to foster and improve: • Motor function • Creativity • Decision-making • Problem-solving •A bility to self-regulate emotions and behaviours • S ocial skills like sharing, taking turns, helping others, resolving conflict • Language development
46% of kids aged 6-11 years get 3 hours or less of active play (unstructured physical activity) per week, including weekends.
Canadian kids spend 63% of their free time, after school and on weekends, being sedentary.
