As 2015 draws to a close, take a look at the adventures and experiences we’ve had with our students over the last six months. It has been a year of self-discovery for many and we look forward to many more years of working together with Si Ling Primary School as well as you our parents, to continue to nurture our students.

Happy 50th Birthday Singapore! The children really got into the swing of this year’s celebration with a ‘Merlion’ Craft and making a non-alcoholic Singapore Sling together with games that were played in the old days like chapteh, five stones and gasing. The Merlion. as we are familiar with, is a creature that Sang Nila Utama supposedly spotted many years ago when he discovered our little island. The Singapore Sling was developed sometime before 1915 by Ngiam Tong Boon, a Hainanese bartender working at the Long Bar in Raffles Hotel. Y Junior Masterchefs In keeping with the MOE directive of teaching the children 21 st century competencies, YMCA gathered all our recourses to come up with a programme we call Y Junior Master chefs! In the last term the children learnt to ‘make/cook’ simple and nutritious quick meals/snacks that require little or no cooking! Take a look at all the fun they had!

November - December Holidays In the first week of the year end holidays, the children revisited some well known olden day games such as five stones, pick-up sticks and even ‘goli’ or better known as marbles. The children also learnt about a toy that was also used by adults back in the days when most people could not afford a telephone to communicate with neighbours! The children learnt the proper rules for playing hopscotch and chongkak and once they started they did not want to stop! The children also visited the Malay Heritage Centre located within walking distance from the Sultan Mosque in Arab street. There they saw how the Malay community lived. An interesting piece of information learnt was that the Heritage Centre was built 160 years ago by Sultan Ali, the son of Sultan Hussein Shah. Istana Kampong Glam was once the royal seat of the Malay sultans in Singapore.

November – December Holidays 7th December – The children once again had the opportunity to show their support for our physically challenged athletes at the 8th ASEAN Para Games! They cheered with all their might and at the same time understood what a challenge it is for these everyday heroes to persevere and keep up the fight even if they feel like giving up! 9th December – With just having witnessed the sportsmanship at the para-games the children were asked to draw their favourite sport during the Pop-Samsung Digital workshop. They were given the tools and tips to use Samsung tablets to draw a masterpiece. The tablets were sponsored by Popular Bookstore in collaboration with Samsung!

November – December Holidays 15th December – The children were blessed when The Esplanade sent an invitation for Huayi 2016: Chinese Hand Puppetry Workshop! The workshop was conducted in English and everyone had a ball of a time! They were taught techniques of handling these puppets and had a chance to perform for their peers! 17th December – We had our very first Christmas party at SCC @ Si Ling! The children were a very great help when it came to putting up the decorations and we also had our wonderful parents who were quick to respond when we asked if they would like to contribute any food for the festivities! The response was really good and we are ever so thankful to them for making our party a success!
