Enrichment Programme Term 1: Sport Stacking

Coach Allan sharing some tips with Lucas! Students having a go at Sport Stacking! Our students at YMCA SCC @ De La Salle enjoyed the Sport Stacking programme. Sport Stacking is a sport that not only develops important physical skills, such as hand-eye coordination, quickness and focus; it also promotes self-confidence, teamwork and good sportsmanship.

Enrichment Programme Term 2: Choral Beats

Besides having the opportunity to create different instruments with recycled materials, our students got to learn the Cup Song, which was incorporated into the sleeper hit film, “Pitch Perfect”. Additionally, students were introduced to “Choral Reading” in which they read aloud in unison as they build their fluency, selfconfidence, vocabulary, motivation, and enjoyment of Literature.

March Holiday Programme Our young firefighters in their smart uniform saving the day!

During the March Holidays, we embarked on a trip to the Civil Defence Heritage Gallery. Our students had fun learning about the roles and responsibilities of a firefighter. They also enjoyed experiencing how it was like to be a firefighter for a day, donned in firefighting gear to rescue civilians.

Our Fun Moments! Father’s Day 2017

Real-life Superheroes Our students in action, where they had to rack their brains and think of strategies to complete the indoor obstacle course.

“I have made prints of my little feet so you can remember when I was so small and sweet. I will grow as the years go past but my love for you will always last.” Our students created a “trophy masterpiece” as a Father’s Day gift using their very own footprints.

They love challenging themselves to complete the obstacle without touching the boundaries as well as guiding their friends who experienced difficulties!

The first outing lined up for the June holidays was to East Coast Park where students had an action-filled morning of fun with team-bonding games planned for them, followed by a mouth-watering meal at McDonald’s for lunch. Everyone enjoyed their lunch as seen from their thumbs up in the photos! The following week, our students embarked on a trip to the Singapore City Gallery, where they learnt about Singapore’s physical transformation over the past 50 years. Besides playing SingCity, a simple and interactive game that allows students to try their hand at being a planner, students were tasked to complete a crossword puzzle in groups as they explored the gallery. The RSAF Museum was the third outing lined up for the students. They were awestruck with the real lifesized helicopters, jets, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) on display as soon as they alighted from the bus. Our students were very curious and they definitely gained new insights from this learning journey. The final outing was a trip to the spectacular ArtScience museum, in particular, Future World Exhibition in which students witnessed and learnt how Art meets Science through the interactive and engaging exhibitions.

Signature Programme: Y Sport Stacking Competition The Y Sport Stacking Competition was jointly organised by YMCA of Singapore and World Sport Stacking Association (Singapore). Our students enjoyed practising together, displaying sportsmanship and impressive teamwork on the day of the competition. All 10 competitiors from YMCA SCC @ De La Salle took at least one medal home! Congratulations to all our winners! We are incredibly proud of all of you! (L-R): Coach Allan, Collin, Hong Yi, Calvin, Carlson, Jia Yun, Sophie, Ms Teresa, Vanessa, Keanu, Ms Royii, Mark, and Clarence

“I was elated that Jia Yun, Hong Yi and their teammates won the Double and Relay events in the 2017 Y Sport Stacking Competition on 21 June 2017. I thank DLSCC for introducing sport stacking as an enrichment activity to the kids at the Centre. They have been practising it since picking up the sport and were overjoyed at winning the events. The sport trained them in their hand-eye coordination and motor skills. They have since been highly motivated and determined, and set their goals for the next competition. Thank you for organising activities that enrich their skills, values and experience.” -From Jia Yun’s and Hong Yi’s Father

Signature Programme: Hiroshima Peace Lantern and Cranes The Hiroshima Peace Lantern is one of YMCA SCCs’ signature programmes. This year, in addition to the peace lanterns, we did peace cranes as well. Peace Lanterns and Peace Cranes were done in memory of Sadako Sasaki. Though ¾ of our students did not know how to fold the cranes, they picked it up after two lessons. The children and teachers had loads of fun! One of our students, Mendel, who attended the ceremony in Hiroshima, shared his experience with us which resulted in many of our students wanting to visit the memorial of Sadako Sasaki.
