Jan 2017 – Jun 2017 Dear Parents, We would like to welcome all our new students and their families to YMCA SCC @ East View. At the same time, we would like to thank East View Primary School and Parents for their never-ending support in ensuring our students are able to enjoy their holistic learning experience to their fullest in a safe environment. The first half of 2017 has been an astounding journey for both the teachers and students of YMCA SCC @ East View with many intensifying moments that will mould everlasting memories. Here are some of the fun and enjoyable activities we had.

Y Sport Stacking Competition – (21st June 2017) The 2017 Y Sport Stacking competition was held on 21st June 2017. Sport stacking was first introduced as an Enrichment Programme at our centre in 2015, and it garnered immense interest among our students. This year, our contestants put in tremendous effort and all of our semi-finalists got into the final round. Muhamed Rifqi Aaryan who represented us in the Lower Primary Individual Category clinched the Gold Medal! Excellent work, guys!

Y Junior Entrepreneurship Programme Sengkang South Little Entrepreneurs – (3rd June 2017) For the second year in a row, as part of the Y Junior Entrepreneurship Programme, students from YMCA SCC @ East View participated in the Sengkang South Little Entrepreneurs Bazaar at Hougang Marquee N6 on 3rd June 2017. They were given the rare opportunity to put their business skills to the test as they sold their items outside of school.

During the March holidays, students in the centre planned and crafted their own unique items for sale, such as handmade tissue carnation flowers, sticks bookmarks, and other decorative art pieces using recycled materials.

Y Junior Entrepreneurship Programme (Cont’d) Sengkang South Little Entrepreneurs – (3rd June 2017) Two of our student volunteers for the day clinched the Most Hardworking Students of the Day awards. We are very proud of them! This has been a learning process for the students to give back to society as the profits earned were given to East View Primary School for the less fortunate students.

After the event, the net proceeds received were presented to the school’s Vice Principal, Mrs. Kwok by Seng Jia En Mavis, one of our award recipients. Through the event, the students learnt the value of cultivating an entrepreneurial mind-set from a non-financial point of view. They were given early informal training into the world of business.

Character Development Programme Character Development Programme: (January – June 2017) Through Character Development Programme, students were taught the definition of the core values. Students did word search and role-plays; even watching short videos to have a deeper understanding of the respective values taught. Students had discussions on how to apply the core values in their daily lives. Through the various interesting activities, students learned to participate and interact in class; thus gaining confidence.

Monthly Best Behaved Awards: (January – June 2017) With the Monthly Best Behaved Awards in YMCA SCC @ East View, we inculcate self-discipline in the students through the motivational system. The students will be observed by the teachers on their attendance, punctuality, general behaviour as well as leadership qualities. As a form of encouragement and motivation, we hand out book vouchers and certificates to the best students of each level as well as to the overall best students of every month.

Enrichment Programmes Y Sport Stacking: (January – March 2017) Students went through 13 sessions on sport stacking. They practised stacking plastic cups into various pyramid-shape formations then breaking them down into neat piles again. Sport stacking helped the students to build up dexterity and taught them teamwork. Students picked up the skills and learnt how to work with each other. Students also got to showcase their speed and skills in the Y Sport Stacking Competition held on 21st June 2017.

Y Choral Beats: (April – June 2016) Through the 13 sessions of lessons on Y Choral Beats, students were taught to make simple and interesting musical instruments using recycled products that can be easily obtained at home. The lessons on Choral Reading help to build students’ reading fluency, self-confidence, and motivation. The highlight of this Enrichment Programme is the lesson on Cup Song which the students enjoy playing individually and in groups

Holiday Programmes March Holiday Outing: (17th March 2017) Picnic @ Tampines Cultural Hub We ended the March school holidays with a short Picnic Trip at the Tampines Cultural Hub. Students conducted simple bonding games which they played among themselves on that day. At the end of the day, each of them received a snack pack.

June Holiday Outing and Workshop: (16th /19th June 2017) Our theme for the June holidays was based on OCCUPATIONS. Students learnt about the different types of occupations such as Policemen, Paramedics and also Electricians! Police Heritage Centre

Hiroshima YMCA Peace Lantern Ceremony This year marks the 10th consecutive year student care centres under YMCA of Singapore are participating in the Hiroshima Peace Programme. Our students participated by creating cranes and lanterns expressing the theme of Peace and Hope to all mankind in their designs.
