July 2016 – December 2016 Dear Parents, We would like to welcome all our new students and their families to YMCA East View Student Care Centre. At the same time, we would like to thank East View Primary School and Parents for their never-ending support in ensuring that our students are able to enjoy their holistic learning experience to their fullest in a safe environment. The second half of 2016 has been an astounding journey for both the teachers and students of YMCA East View Student Care Centre with many exciting moments that will be everlasting memories. 4th SCC Storytelling Competition – (7th September 2016) Every year, YMCA organises a Storytelling Competition and all the SCCs will select one representative each from the Lower and Upper Primary classes to compete in the competition. The theme for this year’s competition was “Peace – Let it begin with me”.

Myat Noe Yati (Primary 2) and Nur Insyirah Binte Muhammad Fadli (Primary 5) from East View Primary School were selected to represent EVSCC in the competition. With their confidence, enthusiasm and courage to perform on stage, they brought pride and honour to EVSCC. Well done Yati and Insyirah!

Festive Programmes Different Festive Seasons – (July – December 2016) Hari Raya Puasa YMCA East View Student Care Centre planned a small party to celebrate the end of fasting month with a joyous celebration of forgiveness, fellowship and food!

Racial Harmony Day Students learnt about Singapore's success as a harmonious nation and society built on a rich diversity of culture and heritage.

Deepavali Students learnt that Hindus celebrate Deepavali across the world to mark the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. The symbolism of Deepavali is aptly summed up in the simple act of lighting an oil lamp.

Christmas Day Students learnt that Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. This is observed on December 25th as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world.

Character and Citizenship Education Character Building: (July – December 2016) Through Character Building lessons, students were taught the definition of the core values. Students did word search and role-plays; even watching short videos to have a deeper understanding of the respective values taught. Students had discussions on how to apply the core values in their daily lives. Through the various interesting activities, students gained confidence through participation and interaction with their classmates. Students reading a story together about the CCE values.

Best Behaved Level Individual Award: (July – December 2016) With the Best Behaved Level Individual (BBLI) Award in EVSCC, we inculcate self-discipline in the students through the motivational system. The students will be observed by the teachers on their attendance, punctuality, general behaviour and leadership qualities. As a form of encouragement and motivation, we hand out book vouchers and certificates to the best students of each level as well as to the overall best student of every month.

Enrichment Programmes Show Not Tell: (July – September 2016) Students went through thirteen sessions of Show Not Tell. They were taught to know the difference between ‘telling’ sentences and ‘showing’ sentences and paragraphs. They used ‘showing’ or descriptive language in their writing to paint vivid pictures for the readers. Show Not Tell helped the students to build confidence and they were able to showcase their talents with this skill.

Y Junior MasterChef: (October – December 2016) Through the thirteen sessions of Y Junior MasterChef, students were taught to make simple, quick and healthy dishes. Y Junior MasterChef teaches students the many health benefits of fruits and greens. Students learn how to whip up a meal without the use of oil, fire and other preservatives. It is a useful skill so that when they are at home alone and hungry, a simple meal taught in Y Junior MasterChef can fill up their tummy.

Holiday Programmes October Outings: (7th October 2016) Singapore Discovery Centre & Army Museum Students went on a Learning Journey to the Singapore Discovery Centre and the Army Museum, to explore and discover the many historical stories of how Singapore fought and survived the tough times.

December Holiday Outings: (15th December 2016) Our theme for the December holidays was based on NATURE. Students learnt about the different types of nature such as Animals, Plants, Climates and the Wonders of the World. Hay Dairy Goat Farm Students went on a trip to the Hay Dairy Farm. Through the tour, students learnt what goats eat, how they produce milk to feed their young and their living habitat.

Holiday Programmes December Holiday Workshops: (21st November – 30th December 2016) Gingerbread Man Cookie

Students making Gingerbread Man Cookies! At the workshop, students learnt the art of baking without the use of a stove! It was indeed a funfilled experience for them.

DIY Volcano Sculpture

Students having a great time moulding their own volcanoes with the teachers’ assistance.

Students were taught how to mould volcanoes. . At the workshop, students learnt the art of using clay to mould the outer layer of the Volcano. They then used ingredients like red food colouring dye, white vinegar and baking soda powder to create the massive explosion of the volcano. Terracup Closed Terrarium

Through the terrarium workshop, students learnt about plant life and how they grow. The students used soil, coloured sand and stones to store the plants in a closed ecosystem. The plants are kept alive with the evaporation and condensation process going on 6|Page in the terracup.
