Term One –

handmade by our students and mentors

YMCA Junior Entrepreneurship Programme (YJEP) The objective of the YJEP is to cultivate the heart to care and serve, where students work in teams with the aim of raising funds to help fellow schoolmates who are less fortunate than themselves. YMCA SCC @ Greenridge students handmade crafts and decorative pieces (using recycled materials) during their enrichment hour and ‘sold’ them during YJEP at the inst Sengkang South Carnival organised by People’s Association Division on 24th March 2018. The event held many fun games, performances by Schools, movie screenings etc. Our student entrepreneurs’ spirits were definitely ignited!

Enrichment Programme Term Two – Y Sport Stacking Having fun during the workshop!

Sport Stacking is an individual and team sport, where participants up-stack and down-stack 12 specially designed plastic cups in pre-determined sequence at a very quick speed. It improves hand-eye coordination, trains quickness and concentration of the mind. It builds confidence in public performance as well. The sport was first introduced as an enrichment programme in all YMCA Student Care Centres in 2016. Our student representatives won several Gold medals in the Y Sport Stacking Competition 2018! Well done children!!  Our students receiving their medals from Ms Lydia Chua, Senior Manager from Health Promotion Board and YMCA General Secretary, Mr Loh Chee Wen.

March School Holiday Programmes Theme: Fairy Wonderland Fairy Tales are essential to children as they boost a child's imagination and cultural literacy. With a powerful and unique imagination, children can use stories to help define critical thinking skills, understand what is right from wrong and deal with emotions/conflicts within themselves. And Fairy Tales are GREAT FUN! Curling up in bed and disappearing to a world where dragons fly and mystical creatures exist is definitely encouraged! As we shared with our students the joys and fond memories of our favourite Fairy Tales, we had fun with various art and craft activities based on the theme. And as anticipated, there was the all-time favourite ‘Movie Outing’ too!

June School Holiday Programmes Week One: Ambitions

ch

One of the most frequently asked questions to children is, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. Common replies are; Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers and even Astronauts! But how well do they know about these professions? What hard work and grit do you need to be the best that you can be? Our students discovered the different occupations in the working world brought to them by their mentors’ presentation. And to add to their exploration, they turned into Master Chefs for a day by attending Pastamania’s Pizza Making workshop!

Week Two: Inventions

Artificial intelligence today is properly known as narrow AI (or weak AI), in that it is designed to perform a narrow task (e.g. only facial recognition or only internet searches or only driving a car). However, the long-term goal of many researchers is to create general AI (AGI or strong AI). While narrow AI may outperform humans at whatever its specific task is, like playing chess or solving equations, AGI would outperform humans at nearly every cognitive task. We gave our students, an opportunity to be little AI experts! They had a Robotics Workshop where they built and programmed their Robots to play a Soccer Tournament against each other! Such Immense fun!!

Week Three – Outer Space Following the AI theme, we went a step further or higher… to SPACE! 1) One million Earths could fit inside the sun – and the sun is considered an average-size star. 2) For years it was believed that Earth was the only planet in our solar system with liquid water. More recently, NASA revealed its strongest evidence yet that there is intermittent running water on Mars, too! 3) You wouldn’t be able to walk on Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus or Neptune because they have no solid surface! This week was a favourite among our space explorers! .

Week 4 – My Loving Heart This week is all about ‘Appreciation for Others’. Appreciation is the ability to recognise and acknowledge the worth of someone. With the current climate of a fast-paced lifestyle, it is essential for reflections and appreciation of all the love we have around us. Our students were brought on a journey of heart-warming stories and activities to embrace the wonderful feeling of appreciation... And their favourite time is MOVIE TIME!
