March 2017- Movie Treats On 16th March, fifteen of our students were selected to watch “ A Dog’s Purpose” at Shaw Seletar Mall. The movie was sponsored by the PAYM (Punggol Park Youth Committee). Along with students from the other centres, our students had an enjoyable experience. The day began with us making a trip down to Yio Chu Kang Primary School. There, we were greeted by the PAYM volunteers and our fellow friends from other centres. For the ice- breaker, the students played several games that allowed them to work as a team. Games such as Entangled, allowed students to solve problems. The students displayed a great amount of teamwork, patience and enthusiasm. After lunch we proceeded to Seletar Mall . The students were given complimentary snacks that consisted of Popcorn and Soft drinks. The movie moved most of our students. Liong Yu Han, P3, explained, “I enjoyed the movie especially when the dog is loyal to the owner and continues searching for him”. The students requested for more of such movies in the future.
KidZania The children went to Kidzania as one of their school activities during the March school holidays. Located on Sentosa Island, it is an indoor theme park that comes complete with buildings and vehicles, authenticated by real-world international and local brands. Combining role-play with real life, Kidzania offers fun and interactive activities for children aged 4 and above who can work, learn and play in a kid-sized city! The children enjoyed role playing whoever they wanted to be – a Pilot, Banker, Surgeon, Fire fighter and more. Big dreams start at Kidzania Singapore. It was indeed a fun day for all the students who had hands-on experience of several professions.

The Junior Entrepreneurship Program (JEP) is a yearly event conducted to give the children a taste of what it is like to be an entrepreneur. The children have hands-on experience to help them to understand the different essential aspects of entrepreneurship. As part of our enrichment programme we inculcate values and awareness on the importance of recycling. The children learn that recycling is not a trend; it’s a way of living, a culture which should be fostered from an early age. Our young entrepreneurs are mindful of their actions and how recycling can protect the environment. This year, the JEP saw the participation of six YMCA Student Care Centres that showcased their recyclables or DIY Products on 3rd June 2017 held at the Marquee @ Hougang N6. The student volunteers eagerly promoted their products. The JEP provides ample opportunities for the students to harness their creativity in designing and producing products from recycled materials.
In the early days of the Second World War, people were shrouded in war, and people’s hearts were filled with fear and uneasiness. The release of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima filled the air with nuclear radiation. Many people lost their precious lives, family and friends. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony is held each year on August 6th, the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Messages of peace are written on lanterns, which will be set afloat down the Motoyasu River, where they will pass directly in front of the Atomic Bomb Dome. Rui Yang, Gwendalyn, Putri and Keegan The story is told of a little girl. She was eight years old, proudly showing their lanterns and she and her family had a happy life. One day, disaster struck. The air was filled with the nuclear radiation of the atomic bomb. She did not listen to the words of her father and mother and went out to play. She got infected with nuclear radiation and died. To commemorate her death, her parents lighted a peace lantern to express thoughts of love. This started the peace lantern lighting every year. People light peace lanterns to commemorate those L-Putri & Gwendalyn- R killed by the atomic bomb and also to pray for lasting world peace. decorating their lanterns.

Y Sport Stacking Competition 2017 was held at YMCA HQ on 21st June 2017. Sport Stacking, a recognised sport by the World Sport Stacking Association, has been an activity the children of YMCA have been participating in for the past 2 years. Sport stacking is a sport that not only develops important physical skills, such as hand-eye coordination, quickness and focus; but also selfconfidence, teamwork and Good sportsmanship. This year’s Y Sport Stacking competition was bigger and bolder than last year’s! In addition the event this year was recognised by the World Sport Stacking Association of Singapore. Participants and parents alike, were treated to displays of skills by champions of the Sport. From HGSCC, three representatives were sent to compete in the event; Zachary Chin from P2, Cha Man Hei from P2 and Ethan Gui from P1. Cha Man Hei participated in the Singles 3-3- 3 event , while Zachary and Ethan participated in the 3-6-3 Doubles event. HGSCC applauds the boys for the courage and confidence to compete against all other YMCA SCC’s despite being a small group. We admire their tenacity and team spirit. Great going boys! There was also a parent-child side event where parents could engage in a ‘doubles’ event with their child. This is where teamwork and communication comes into play as each candidate is only allowed to use one hand to up- stack and downstack the cups as fast as possible. HGSCC is proud to announce that Cha Man Hei and his Mother came in Second Place for the parent-child event! Congratulations! All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day for the children and we hope to rise as winners in 2018.

KidzAmaze On 23rd June, the students wrapped up their holiday programme by visiting KidzAmaze at Safra Jurong. This largest indoor playground features one of the highest spiral slides measuring 18.5 metres tall and an interactive foam ball arena. The play arena helps students to engage their sense of direction, motion and coordination. Most importantly, the students were able to work together and make new friends with students from YMCA SCC @ Oasis. There were facilitators to ensure the students’ safety. In between playtime, the teachers ensured that the students had break time to have food. P1 girls enjoying at the ball area ☺
The students had lots of fun and on the way back, most of them fell asleep in the bus.
Singapore Discovery Centre Thirty- one students from our centre went on a trip to the Singapore Discovery Centre on 9 June. Students were able to experience Singapore’s milestones and discovered what had shaped Singapore to become a global city it is today. They then proceeded to the theatre to watch a film called “So Singapore”. The movie started out with how Singapore got its name. The 5-minute long film educates our students on what it means to have a Singapore Identity. For instance, the Esplanade design was inspired by our local favourite fruit, durian. It also showed how we celebrate each other’s festive seasons. The students went on a tour of the National Service building. Here they learnt the importance of National Service and how our people can protect Singapore. They tried some basic military training activities such as the leopard crawl and sit- ups. The students moved on for the SAFTI bus tour. They went on a tour around the 98 hectare training ground for the officers in the SAF, Navy and Airforce. At the entrance, our students were welcomed by a warm wave from the officers. By going on this tour, most students are inspired to be in the SAF when they grow up. Wayne Lee said, “I am so happy I got to come here. When I grow up, I want to be a soldier. All want to experience how it feels to be in a fox hole.
