AMAZING HOLIDAYS AT IJSCC 1

At IJSCC SEPTEMBER HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES 2

Organising programmes and outings for the children is always an adventure that we genuinely look forward to each holiday. It is a chance to identify the perfect mix of fun and learning opportunities that will make the holidays memorable for our girls. My favourite is the theatrical play “Charlotte’s Web’, a timeless story about friendship. The girls’ choice, no doubt, is the adrenalin packed outing to Bounce Singapore where the more nimble ones were able to complete the Ninja warrior obstacle course. It ended with them zipping down the aerial runway to the finish line. Besides the outings and workshops, the teachers also worked hard to make each day and every moment count by packing lots of theme-based activities and games for the children.

September Holiday Activities TEACHERS’ DAY CONCERT ( 1 SEPTEMBER ) Twenty-three YMCA students from all levels took part in the school’s Teachers’ Day Concert held at the school hall on 1st September. The girls were actively engaged for the whole month of dance practices. Undoubtedly, they pulled off ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams with great energy and zest on stage!

They presented the stories “The World’s Best Warrior” and “The Mouse and The Light.” All the girls who trained for this competition became confident speakers in the process, learning how to enunciate their words and communicate their feelings through voice intonations and facial expressions. They are eagerly looking forward to next year’s storytelling competition!

BASIC MILITARY TRAINING WORKSHOP ( 5 & 6 SEPTEMBER ) It’s a sea of green faces – army green that is, for the children who were attending the BMT Workshop and finding out what army recruits eat in the outfield and how heavy a grenade is. The girls also made “grenades” and practiced ‘throwing’ grenades. The children had lots of fun learning how to ‘leopard crawl’ in a fun way, and painting their faces with camo cream. The green on their faces matched the green on their t-shirts!

STORY TELLING COMPETITION ( 7 SEPTEMBER ) A total of five students trained for the annual YMCA SCC 4th Storytelling Competition 2016 Peace. Two of them, Mathilda Lim and Leanna Wee did us proud by reaching the finals despite tough competition from 22 centres.

November / December Holiday Programmes URBAN FARM & BARN ( 22 NOVEMBER ) The theme for the week was ‘Nature’. Our girls went to Urban Farm & Barn at Bukit Panjang Hill and learnt all about vertical farming, what it entails and how it works for land scarce Singapore. They were also engaged in a hands-on planting activity and brought home their own potted plants.

SPLASH – KIDS AMAZE PUNGGOL ( 29 NOVEMBER )

Our girls embarked on a water activity in conjunction with the week’s water theme. Together with the teachers, they dived into Splash at Kidz Amaze with great energy and zest splashing away at the multiple play decks, five slides and themed splash pad. The big hit was the water dunk by the giant overhead bucket that tips over and dunks our girls at the sound of a bell. All of them had a splashing good time!

Spinning around on the merrygo-round!

CHARLOTTE’S WEB ( 7 DECEMBER ) What can a spider spinning its web do? Did it inspire the invention of the World Wide Web? The children found out that a spider’s web did that and more! The children watched a play called Charlotte’s Web and learnt how a spider named Charlotte saved her friend, Wilbur the pig, from ending up on the dinner plate.

BOUNCE SINGAPORE ( 9 DECEMBER )

The rock climbing wall was great for everyone.

Who knew jumping on a trampoline could be this much fun? In fact, everyone was having such a great time that they hardly noticed the time. The girls loved the Slam Dunk and Trampoline Dodgeball, Many of our young gymnasts had no problem completing the obstacle course at the X-Park, albeit giving some sections a miss because those were more suited for young adults. The highlight was of course the ‘Leap of Faith’, attempted only by the teachers because of the age and height requirements.

BEYOND EARTH – OUTERSPACE ( 12 & 13 DECEMBER ) (9 December) Facilitators from the Pink School Bus came down for a two day Science workshop. The children were intrigued by the immense size of the galaxy. They were taught about the planets and constructed their own Solar System. They also made their own rockets and launched them.

MOULD & SCULPT CHRISTMAS CANDLES ( 19 DECEMBER ) (9 December) What better way to display the spirit of giving than moulding and sculpting on soft candle wax this Christmas season? Our YMCA children did just that when they created a Christmas cupcake, a Christmas tree and of course Santa Claus to take home in a gift box for their loved ones.

Scooping the right amount of candle wax to make a cupcake, good enough to eat

WATER COLOUR PAINTING Next, the girls had much fun experimenting with water colours and using different types of vegetables like lady-fingers, potatoes and carrots to make shapes and create their own artwork.

WEB THEME ACTIVITIES

Navigating their way through a huge spider web without touching any string or be caught by the spider

In keeping with the Charlotte Web theme, the girls made twirling paper windmills, a perennial favourite. They also drew cartoon pictures, cut out spider webs, crawled like a spider and in the process, learned all about spiders and how they can help remove pesky insects in the house. Using her thumbprint to paint a picture.

JELLY MAKING We had a jelly making activity during a CCE lesson for the theme obedience. This activity taught the children about obedience and applied its key traits – 3C1I: Cheerfully, Completely, Consistently and Immediately.

Just need icing on the cup cake and my Christmas candles are done!

First, make a pattern using different colour nail polish

WATER THEME ACTIVITIES – NAIL ART In a series of activities, our teachers showed the amazing stuff we can do with water. The girls thrilled have their (13were JUNE & 16toJUNE) nails painted by transferring the nail polish pattern in the water to their fingernails. Then dip a finger into the pattern to transfer it to the nail

Enrichment & CCE Programmes JUNIOR MASTERCHEF ( TERM 3 ) In the months of July and August, our girls participated in the Junior Master Chef enrichment programme where (13 JUNE & 16 JUNE) they experienced first-hand how to make fruit salad, mash potatoes, icing cookies, egg mayonnaise sandwiches and many more! The teachers also touched on dining etiquette and eating habits during the final week of our programme. The girls had lots of fun preparing their own food for tea break during the two months!

SHOW NOT TELL ( TERM 4 ) In Term 4, our girls were introduced to 16the world of (13 JUNE & JUNE) expressive language. Show, Not Tell is a technique that enables one to create a picture in the reader's mind by describing what you see in detail so that the reader feels he or she is there. Don’t tell me, show me! CHARACTER & CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION ( CCE ) During the second half of the year, CCE lessons covered the values of Attentiveness, (13 JUNE & 16 JUNE) Generosity, Honesty, SelfControl, Responsibility and Obedience. Character values are taught through storytelling, games, songs and activities, to help the children learn and remember better.

‘Frozen’ themed cake

They were thrilled by the snacks, goodie bags and even the “frozen” themed cake prepared for them and they had a whale of a time participating in the indoor and outdoor games that the teachers had organised!

Indian Dance Practice

DEEPAVALI ( 28 OCTOBER ) For this year’s Deepavali, we touched on the story of Narakasura behind (13 JUNE & 16 JUNE)the Festival of Lights. Our girls watched the video and slides, which opened up their minds on Indian traditions and sweets. They answered well for the quiz segment and coloured the traditional Rangolis.

To end the Deepavali week, our girls enthusiastically participated in an Indian dance led by the teachers.

CHRISTMAS PARTY ( 23 DECEMBER ) This is a season for joy and giving. Our girls learned the true meaning of Christmas through storytelling and craft activities like making the Christmas tree and the decorations to deck out our centre for a festive mood.
