Science Workshop
YMCA SCC @ Jurong West 1 was established in 2002 and is one of 3 YMCA community-based student care centres. YMCA also operates 19 other school-based student care centres. YMCA SCC @ Jurong West 1 currently has students from a total of 11 primary schools. The majority of the students attend the neighbouring Jurong West Primary School while the others come from Frontier, Corporation, Juying, Rulang, West Grove, Henry Park, Pioneer, Xingnan, Lakeside and Boon Lay Garden Primary Schools.

Molly Bus Visit On 21 November 2016, the Molly Bus – the National Library Board’s existing big mobile library bus came to pay our students a visit. The bus is equipped with an internal book-drop and a borrowing station for students to return and borrow books. Here are some photos of the visit where our students enjoyed the experience of reading and borrowing in the mobile bus.

Peanut Butter with Banana Sandwich (Cooking Workshop) A peanut butter with banana sandwich making session was held during the November school holidays. The students had a chance to make their very own peanut butter sandwich with banana fillings by first spreading peanut butter on the bread, then placing the banana slices on top of the spread.

Jurong Bird Park During the November & December holidays, we made a trip to Jurong Bird Park and had plenty of fun viewing different species of bird.

Battlebox Tour We had a chance to explore the underground command centre (Battlebox) at the Fort Canning Park with a guided tour on the fall of Malaya and Singapore in World War II and how the Battlebox functioned. Students were also taught the true causes behind “the worst disaster� and largest capitulation in British history. Photos were not allowed in the underground command centre but we had a chance to take a group shot outside the Battlebox.

Fun Bowling @ Chevrons We visited the Chevrons and had a fun bowling session there. A coach was around to explain to the students the safety precautions when it comes to bowling and holding a bowling ball. The students enjoyed themselves a lot!

Learn Science Through – Forefathers of Singapore A two-days science workshop was held teaching about science through history: • How to build straw towers just like how Mr Lee Kuan Yew helped established HDB flats. • Understanding Mr Tan Kah Kee’s rubber plantations in a scientific way and how he helped Singaporeans with his wealth from that. • Find out what Sang Nila Utama saw and what instrument he used to see the animal which gave our country our name. C.A.R.E – Singapore Polytechnic Students from the Singapore Polytechnic made a trip down to the centre from 19 to 21 December 2016 to hold C.A.R.E (Centre for Applications in Rehabilitation Engineering) Programme for our students as part of their Community Service project. They planned the programmes based on Caring and Responsibility. Our students had a lot of fun learning how to play a part in taking responsibility for the environment. They participated in treasure hunt and many group activities that allow them to foster teamwork. We would like to thank the group of students from the Singapore Polytechnic for doing this for our students.

During the November and December holidays, “My Fun Crayons� was carried out over a span of 4 weeks. The students were taught to differentiate family colors and how to use them for a drawing. They learned how to blend the family colors together to create their very own masterpiece. Laetitia Oh (P6)

As the year of 2016 comes to an end, we look forward to an exciting start in 2017. The devoted team of teachers at YMCA SCC @ Jurong West 1 promises to bring more activities and programmes that children love. Some of the exciting activities for the first half of 2017 includes:
