YMCA Student Care Centre @ Kuo Chuan Newsletter January – June 2017
Introduction Dear Parents, The staff at KCSCC are excited to welcome you back to a brand new semester with us! It has been an incredible journey working alongside you in 2016. Through this issue of our bi-annual newsletter, we hope that our bond with you will continue to bloom with many more memories built along the way. In this issue, we will be sharing with you the various events that have taken place and those that are to come. These include highlights of our termly enrichment classes, CCE lessons, as well as the fun-filled school programmes enjoyed by our students.
Enrichment Classes Termly enrichment classes such as ‘Fun with Crayons’ and ‘Y-Master Chef’ were conducted every Friday over Term 1 and Term 2 respectively. These classes were aimed at encouraging skill-building and cultivating creativity amongst our students. Students were taught to incorporate the unique blending techniques using monochromatic oil pastel colours to create eye-catching masterpieces that we later displayed in our centre. Originality of ideas was encouraged and students, whose art pieces stood out, were rewarded with little tokens from our in-house instructors.
As for our in-house ‘Y-Master Chef’ programme, our students attempted a series of mouth-watering recipes.

Character and Citizenship Education Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) has been a key focus in our curriculum. CCE fosters growth in the social and emotional aspect of every student’s attributes, cultivated through a series of the moral values that have been introduced monthly.
For the character trait of RESILIENCE, students were made to learn through play by engaging in several outdoor activities which tested their resilience and perseverance. These activities stimulated the interest in students to increase their level of involvement by building a sense of belonging through healthy competition.
In February, the Character Trait of the Month was RESPECT. Through the use of team-building games and roleplaying activities, the teachers integrated the values of respect so that the students would have a more hands-on experience learning the significance of the character value. Students later designed word art posters, adding their ‘personal touch’ by sharing a little scenario which they felt reflected Respect.
Look at all our camouflaged faces!!
Our teachers, along with their peers, helped to encourage every individual student to participate in activities such as the ‘Spoon and Marble’ race and inter-team tally match rally.
Since the beginning of this semester, the students have learnt and explored different character traits every month such as Respect, Gratefulness, Resilience, Obedience and Responsibility.
CHARACTER TRAITS OF THE MONTH
Our students had tremendous fun with ‘camo’ face-painting and learning the leopard crawl.
They completed the obstacle course and earned certificates of participation at the end of the camp.

Nestle MILO Factory Tour! On 14th June 2017, we brought our students to the far western end of Singapore to pay a visit to one of the most popular factories in our country, the Nestle factory – home to our deliciously favourite MILO drink! Students were amused by fun facts on the history of MILO as well as the secret formula to making their favourite drink.
As the month-long June holidays came to an end, the students were treated to another outing; this time it was a visit to our renowned
SINGAPORE ZOO!!!

The day started dark and gloomy. Nevertheless, the rainy weather did not affect the mood of our inquisitive explorers. They were all set for an incredible day of adventure at the Singapore Zoo. (Above) Our students listening to a short safety briefing before heading for their factory tour.
Did we have fun? OF COURSE WE DID!!
We sincerely hope that our students had an enjoyable time with us during the school holidays as well as through this whole semester. Thank you, mummies and daddies, for your continuous support towards our curriculum that is specially put together by our KCSCC staff.
The overwhelming aroma of cacao beans engulfed the air around us as we walked through the factory! What’s more, the students got to bring home loads of freebies which included more MILO goodies! It was an eventful trip to remember ☺
