On 1 February, Ms Rose told the story of Nian and Ms Yang taught the P1 students how to cut, fold, and staple the red packets to form a Chinese lantern. Chinese New Year (CNY) is on the first day of the lunar calendar and it usually occurs somewhere between January 30 and February 20, also known as the Spring Festival. This traditional festival is also a festival of reunion. The P2 students are all eyes and ears while Ms. Ng is explaining the craft.
No matter how far away people are from their homes, they will try their best to get back to have the Reunion Dinner. YMCA SGSCC celebrated Chinese New Year through making different arts and crafts using red packets a.k.a “hong baos.” These are based on the Story of Nian. On the 5th of February, P2 students made fans using the red packets. The whole activity was headed by Ms. Ng with 2 simple steps. First, staple the left side of the first red packet to the right side of the second red packet. Repeat until the desired size of paper fan.
For the P3 and P4 students, they made fish out of the hong baos. These 3 symbols are significant in Chinese culture. The Lantern Festival is regarded as a good day for family gatherings. The Chinese calligraphy character for the word "fan" has the same sound as the character for "kindness" or "good.“ Thus fans are viewed as good luck charms.
Above: Brandon is very focused in combining the Red packets to make a fan.
Lastly, the fish means ‘extra’ or ‘abundance’ which makes it an indispensable component in the CNY’s dinner celebration.
Right: Edison is cheerfully showing the red packet fish that he was able to make.

“It is because moments like this are best shared with friends that are like families.
Happiness, Prosperity, Longevity To us all!
Chinese New Year Mini Celebration On 5th February 2016, SGSCC children experienced a mini CNY celebration through sharing tidbits with each other. It is just like how families dine together and enjoy each other’s company during reunions. It is because moments like this are best shared with friends that are like family.
Above: (L-R) Clariz, Ferlin, and Ashley are sharing tidbits with each other and enjoying each other's company. Left: Thrilled, P1 students are patiently waiting for more tidbits to share with their peers.
Y Soccer: Kicking It Up A Notch Soccer or Football is a sport that helps to develop social skills, form new friendships, promote teamwork, and develop self-discipline as well as helping children to gain confidence and leadership qualities. Communication, which is a key factor in the game of soccer, helps children to develop social skills, form stronger friendship and encourages better teamwork. On top of that, soccer helps to develop children’s ABC (Agility, Balance, Coordination) while having fun! Kai Yan is very focused on catching the ball using the top of her head.
Sarah Lim is doing an awesome job kicking the ball properly.
Above: (L) P1s are eagerly learning how to control a ball. (R) Brysen, Rei An, and Shanyce are having fun while learning how to kick a soccer ball.
The programme kicked off on 19th January 2016 and lasted until 16th March 2016. It helped the children gain knowledge about the game of soccer, learn the fundamentals of the game which include; passing, shooting, turning, dribbling, heading, chipping and basic positional awareness. At the end of the programme, the children had a friendly competition to pit their skills against each other on what they had learnt over the past weeks.

Marina Barrage Tour & Kite - Flying On 17th March 2016, the SGSCC students reminiscing about children of YMCA SGSCC went to Mr. Lee Kuan Yew and how he the Marina Barrage to learn about brought about change to the nation. how it started and what are the basic things it provides. First, the tour guide briefed the children about the rules to follow during the tour which is to avoid touching the displayed memoirs or figures. Next, the tour guide explained that Marina Barrage is the first freshwater reservoir in the heart of the city and it provides water supply, flood control, and lifestyle attractions. There were 6 galleries to explore but the 6th gallery was on maintenance that day so the children were not able to see that. Nonetheless, the 5 galleries were able to give them quite a lot of information. Gallery 1 showcases the environmental challenges of today through the “organic tree”. Gallery 2 recounts the clean-up of the Singapore and Kallang Rivers. Gallery 3 features the Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters programme, launched by PUB in 2007. Gallery 4 demonstrated how the reservoir works especially when there’s heavy rainfall. Lastly, Gallery 5 proves that an environmentally sustainable country requires SGSCC students exploring the ABC thought and effort. programme launched by PUB as displayed in Gallery 3.
After a trip to the galleries, the children were able to enjoy kite – flying on the rooftop of the building.
