Activities at YCSCC The students at YMCA SCC at Yio Chu Kang have been involved in a variety of activities. Let us walk through this newsletter to read about the following activities:

Fun with Crayons From January to March, the students were given the space to exercise their creativity through the use of crayons. Equipped with the skill of blending and the starburst effect, the students began to create beautiful art works based on the themes of each week, for example party hats. It was definitely a fun time for the budding artists.

Visit by AVA Agri-food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) paid a visit to our school, sparking much interest and excitement among the students. Students were taught to be responsible pet owners by learning how to care for the welfare of their pets. The star arrival of the rabbits certainly made the programme all the more enjoyable for the students!

Visit by NKF The National Kidney Foundation conducted a session to educate the students on the importance of a healthy lifestyle. A realistic experiment was shown to the pupils, as they learnt about the consequences of being unhealthy and the fragility of kidneys. It was certainly an enriching experience for the students. Those who could answer questions at the end of the session were awarded with mini plush kidneys.

Chinese New Year Celebration
Chinese New Year also known as Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival, is undoubtedly the most important event in the Chinese calendar. Red is the colour of the season. At the Chinese New Year Celebration, everyone wasdressed in their Chinese ethnic costumes. The students brought mandarin oranges to exchange with their friends. It was a joyous occasion for everyone.

Once a week on Thursdays, the students enjoy playing soccer. Fun soccer games increase coordination, spatial awareness and social interaction for the students. The students have developed a healthy interest in the sport.
Talk on Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

The students learn about why we recycle, where it happens, how it happens, what materials are easiest to recycle and how much energy recycling can save. They also learn about the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle). Students designed their own posters that show good ideas for recycling and reducing waste.

A birthday is always a happy occasion. We celebrate everyone’s birthday with a birthday cake and song!

NEWater Visitor Center The students went on a guided tour of the most high tech water treatment plant in the world – one capable of turning sewage into drinking water. They were immersed in a multi-sensory experience to tease their knowledge on NEWater and other water-related topics. They got to make mini rain gardens and understand how they function and improve water quality.

Junior Entrepreneurs Programme Students participated in the Sengkang South Little Entrepreneurs Bazaar at Hougang Marquee N6. They unleashed their imagination and skills planned, crafted and sold handmade items using recycled materials to raise funds internally for the needy students in their schools.

Drug Awareness Talk (CNB) The Central Narcotics Bureau conducted a session to educate the students on drug awareness. They equipped the students with knowledge needed to stay clear from drug activities, cultivate positive life skills and healthy lifestyle, thereby improving self-confidence and school behaviour. The students were told, “Drugs are a waste of time. They destroy your memory and your self-respect and everything that goes along with your self-esteem.�

Students got wet and had fun with their friends at the newly opened swimming pool at Punggol Safra. Teachers and students got to bond with each other outside of the class.

Paramedics from the Singapore Civil Defence Force came to the centre to educate the students on what action to take in case of an emergency. They taught the kids how to do CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and how to help when they see someone having fits. They also taught the students how to the bandages for a broken arm or an injured head. The students practised tying the bandages on their friends.
June Holiday Activities Bouncy Ball and Slime Workshop
Instructors from Ace Excel came to the centre to teach our students how to make bouncy ball and slime. Easy steps were used to make these bouncy balls as well as the slime. Students were taught to use their senses (sight, touch) while making the bouncy balls and slime.

June Holiday Activities Making a Sea Aquarium
Students used their creativity to make a sea aquarium. Each student was given a small fish tank. They made the fishes out of clay. They were also given small plastic plants and rocks to decorate the tank.
