A Note from the Supervisor

A note 1 A note from the Supervisor

It was a fun-filled 2016 at YMCA Student Care Centre @ Zhangde (ZDSCC)! My heartfelt thanks to the parents and school for their continued support towards the centre. The awards we got from the various events the students participated at YMCA during the first half of the year inspired us to learn more, do more, so that we can give more. ZDSCC continued to be of help to the students by providing support to enhance their learning through coaching them with their homework, providing them with different tools to sharpen their knowledge, discovering their weak points and learning how to overcome them, enhancing their gifts through getting them involved in the different activities planned for them.

We hope that through our Enrichment Programmes, we will enhance and complement the school’s efforts in edifying the Values In Education Curriculum. The Learning Journeys allow our students to feel the community around them, making them more aware of their surroundings. Together, we have worked to achieve growth and fostered friendships with the help of our specifically catered programmes for our students. Moving forward to 2017, we are working towards a much more comprehensive and holistic programme framework to meet our students’ needs.

Y Junior MasterChef In Term 4, students of ZDSCC learnt what it means to be a chef; learning to cook up simple dishes like sushi bread and cheese dips “Learning to whip up a delicious meal!” They also had a hands-on experience to prepare culinary dishes, conducted by Mdm Nancy, Mdm Teo and Ms Huda.

They made their very own crisp Apple Crumble and delicious Vietnamese Rolls using easy-to-cook ingredients which they can enjoy together with their families.

“YMCA ZDSCC Family Photo~” Children’s Day Celebrations ZDSCC organised a Children’s Day party for the students! The lineup of events included Treasure Hunt, Musical Chairs, live performances and gift giving. This year, the staff made new decorations to adorn the centre in line with the event. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves throughout the day, especially during tea break time when the teachers ordered a special meal for all of them, allowing them to eat to their hearts’ content. Here are some of the comments from the students: “It was much better than last year’s children’s day party because there were more presents and food!”- Felice, P3

“It was fun because we had performances, food and games!” - Jun Hao, P2 Happy Children’s Day!!

“Flowers for you and me~”

“Marketing with my friends!”

“Books, books everywhere!”

“Hmmm what should I buy?”

Library & Fish Market Outings Our students went on an experiential learning journey to Bukit Merah Public Library and Tiong Bahru Market. This neighbourhood is popular for its café-lined streets and old-school architecture, but the wet market is the heart of this hip village. At the fish market, the students had the opportunity to listen, speak and write as they moved through the stalls. They were amazed by the vast selection of poultry and seasonal produce, but their favourite was the lovely flower stall at the front of the market where they learnt of the different species of flowers. In addition, students were exposed to stalls serving bites of nostalgia such as Nasi Lemak, Roti Prata, Hainanese Chicken Rice and Sugar Cane drinks. Yummy!

“I want to go into the fire truck! Pick me, pick me!!” December Holiday Programme For the December holidays we went on learning journeys to the Civil Defence Heritage Gallery, the Singapore Philatelic Museum, Marina Barrage & Childrens’ Garden by the Bay. Each learning journey was an eye-opening experience for the children, allowing interactive education about the different industries in Singapore. Our students also caught the movie screening of Moana, the latest Disney animation about a Polynesian girl on a quest with the demigod, Maui, to save her island and the rest of the world.

Engaging Our Parents – Meet-the-parents Session 2 Our teachers had an opportunity to meet the parents to provide feedback and also hear from them. Engaging our parents is an essential routine for the centre as it helps us to bond with the parents and work with them to develop the children.
