Resilience & Sustainability On behalf of the YMCA Board and membership I wanted to thank you for your past support and let you know about our plans.
Over 700 kids learn through play at YMCA Child Care Centres, helping them get the right start in life and become better prepared for schools. There are barriers to healthy living - that is why we provided over 167,000 in direct financial assistance to those who need it most
In most years our annual report describes the work we have done, the impact we have had and our plans for the future. This is clearly not a normal year. The worldwide pandemic has undoubtedly had impacts with you and your own family. Just as individuals, families, communities, and nations have been challenged by the COVID-19 Coronavirus, this global pandemic hit the Saskatoon Family YMCA hard. We shut down our gym, pool, and exercise facilities for an extended period, our daycamps were severely impacted, and we reduced our daycare services to essential service workers for several months. As you know, we have a resilient team of staff and volunteers who are committed to improving people’s lives and serving the needs of the community. During the pandemic we had small successes. We are fortunate to have opened a family resource centre that offers unique programs out of our Fairhaven location. We found new ways to raise funds to support our Strong Kids annual campaign including hosting a virtual Suits and Sneakers fundraiser in June. We had staff delivering programs online to adults and teens. We ran camp and fitness programs in the park. And we were working on ensuring that when we started to meet more needs we would do it in the safest and best ways possible. Cleaning standards are the best in the city. We need you to tell your friends and family about your positive YMCA experiences. And the greatest support you could give is by giving us some of your skills and passion. We need you to volunteer. Be a Strong Kids asker, help us tell your Y story, help with a project, become a policy or board volunteer, have your work team connect for a fundraising drive. So now we have a plan. And we have a way back. Our YMCA will be different than before, but we will focus on services we know the community needs more than ever. In order to do this we need your support. Around 70% of our members have returned in some way to the YMCA. They are feeling safe and are understanding about our health and safety procedures and changes to programs. Our four childcares are working with more families every week. The need continues to grow and we are in the process of opening our fifth licensed childcare which will be in Brighton. Our school-based programs are steadily returning and we are so fortunate to have most of our staff back after being off for months. We are getting back to some sense of a new normal, but we do need your help more than ever. We know more families are in need of subsidy and to help we need you to donate to the Strong Kids campaign. We know our safety and cleaning standards are the best in the city. Our work to meet the mission of the YMCA continues because of the support of members, generosity of donors, dedication of countless volunteers, and the ongoing work of our able staff. The fact that we are not just a gym, but a community — a Y family — positions us to look ahead with hope and confidence.
What Do Members Say? "I appreciate the diversity represented at the YMCA. I see many races, ages, shapes and sizes, welcomed and embraced. This is an important piece in building a sense of belonging and will help you retain and attract memberships and a culture of inclusive community. Well done." "I had a back injury that Id been working on recovery for the past year . The Y has helped me increase my overall strength and decrease everyday back pain." "The quality of the volunteer instructors has been exceptional. I trust they are recognized for their knowledge, dedication and their sincere desire to promote health in our lives. By illustrating this commitment to giving time and talent to others, they are also inspiring others to help in their community wherever possible. Your volunteers are amazing!!" "The staff are always friendly when I walk through the door in the morning, a smile and a good morning from the staff starts my day off right." "My daughter participate in the swimming class every Saturday and never late for that because she likes it so much. She likes the teacher, the class schedule, the activities in class. That’s awesome." Based on Statements Audited by James Stinn, CGA
Honorary Supporter Award Congratulations Dr. Ralph Schneider
The YMCA had the opportunity to recognize an Honorary Supporter this year during National Philanthropy week along with the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and here was our submission. "Dr. Ralph Schneider has extraordinary skills in conversations and collaboration. He uses these skills as a supporter of the YMCA of Saskatoon, serving on the board and providing financial and vocal support of the Strong Kids Campaign and Caribou Legacy Club. Ralph makes his friendraising look effortless. He does not hesitate to initiate conversations and to learn about the needs of the community. Without Ralph's generous support and his energy, we know we would not be where we are today." Ralph is in the great company of past YMCA nominated and awarded recipients: 2014 Jim Halmarson 2018 Eric Cline
