Health and Fitness Low Intensity Though classes are labelled Low Intensity, it does not mean that you will not be working hard!

Aquafit:

An energetic, low-impact class that uses the water's resistance to increase muscular strength while maximizing your cardiovascular system.

Gentle Yoga:

Designed as a low-stress learning experience that will get you ready to continue your journey in yoga.

Beginner Yoga:

Perfect for those who are new to yoga or are looking to increase their flexibility and relax the body and mind.

Restorative Join us for a Yin class that involves deep stretching and restorative poses to rejuvenate the body and calm the mind. Let go of stress and improve your flexibility.

Yoga: This class involves holding poses for a longer period of time in order to go deep into the fascia. Leave feeling calm, grounded, and well stretched!

This class is designed to provide gentle stretching techniques that will improve recovery post-workout, increase flexibility and help prevent injury.

Health and Fitness Medium Intensity Aqua Board Fitness (ABF):

ABF challenges your typical workout routine in a new and unique way to improve balance, posture and overall strength

Y-BarreFit:

This is a ballet/barre-inspired fitness workout focused on strengthening the entire body. Strength training combined with barre, core conditioning, and flexibility provide a balanced workout.

Y-Bootcamp:

Get a great full-body workout full of strength training and cardio.

Y-Cycle:

Cardiovascular interval exercise that's designed to provide you with optimal fat burning and strength training.

Y-Functional:

Take advantage of the many exercises available in the Functional Fitness area to strengthen your core and muscles in a fun group workout!

Y-Kettlebells:

Using ballistic and swinging motions, a kettlebell workout will improve your cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility.

Movements incorporate multiple muscles simultaneously and are repeated to ensure a full-body workout.

Zumba®:

A fitness class that combines dance and fitness moves.

VANESSA PLAKSY Vanessa has always had a passion for health and fitness. After achieving my own personal fitness goals, I decided to become a personal trainer. I want to use my passion for fitness to help others feel confident & strong, allowing them to reach their fitness goals. Vanessa is certified through American Council on Exercise (ACE) which allhers her to help others create the life they have always strived for.

ROB FRIEDT Rob specializes in functional training using kettlebells, TRX, ropes, etc. He’s here to encourage, motivate, and guide you through your personal health and fitness journey...

whether that’s increasing strength and muscle, improving your sport,

losing weight, or just feeling and moving better.

With years of experience in

individual and group training, Rob is certified through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and CanFitPro as well as a YMCA-certified Group Fitness Leader.

PEGGY ANDERSON Peggy has been involved in sports and activities from a young age, from dance to softball to synchronized swimming, as an athlete and a coach. She began volunteering as a fitness instructor at the Y in early 2015 and taught boot camp, strength and conditioning, synergy, and cycle classes. She was certified as a Spin instructor in the early months of 2019. In 2019 she was certified as a personal trainer at the Y. Peggy's main interest is functional fitness. Her goal is to support and encourage people of all ages to live healthy, active lifestyles.

Y@HOME+

Y@HOME+ is a virtual platform, providing members with access to YMCA programming and services they can do both and home and at the YMCA. All our active YMCA adult members will be able to access the website and participate in the virtual programming, including: 30+ live fitness classes per week, including Yoga, YMCA Arriba, YMCA Barre, TotalFit, BodyFit, and MuscleFit. 200+ on-demand fitness videos for all fitness levels and ages to get active anytime, anywhere.

Healthy eating and meal planning ideas, which includes meal plans, recipes using nutritious ingredients, and grocery lists.

Exercise and coaching program, called Y-Thrive. Y-Thrive includes instructional videos and work out cards that lead members through workout routines they can do at the YMCA. More information about this can be found in the next section.

Aquatics YMCA Swimming Lessons Parent & Tot (3 mo-2 yrs) Splashers: Parent assisted. Introduction to entering and exiting the water, get face wet, and various movements through the water.

Bubblers: Parent assisted. The child will become acquainted with breath control, floats, surface support and various movements through the water.

Preschool (3-5 yrs) Bobbers: The child will be introduced to the water, bobbing, and assisted front and back floats.

Floaters: The child will be introduced to front, and back floats, front and back glides, and 3 metres swim on front and back.

Gliders: The child will be introduced to side kicking, deepwater and build endurance for front and back flutter kicks.

Divers:

The child will be introduced to front swim using arms and legs (10m) and surface support.

Surfers: Children will continue to work on advanced deep-water skills, surface support and be introduced to Front Crawl and Back Crawl.

Jumpers: Children will be introduced to diving into deep water and continue to develop Front Crawl and Back Crawl. Eventually being able to swim a whole length of the pool.

Aquatics Learn To Swim (6-12 yrs) Otter:

Otter teaches the child how to stay safe in the water and develop their swimming skills.

During these classes, the child will focus on submersion and streamlined gliding.

Seal:

Seal teaching builds on the swimming skills taught in Otter and focuses on propulsion through kicking, rolling balance, and some deeper water skills.

Dolphin:

Dolphin progresses the child's swimming skills into a sequence of events forming front and back crawl motions. This level improves skill coordination and encourages the child to be more comfortable and confident with deep water skills.

Swimmer: Swimmer focuses on the initial standard of front and back crawl for the length of 25m.

This level also encourages an increased focus on deepwater skills as they spend most of the class in the deep water.

Star Program (6+ yrs)

Star 1:

In the first star level, the child focuses on the whip and egg-beater kicks. Building from these kicks, the child learns elementary backstroke initial standard, builds endurance, and will be able to tread water with buoyant support.

Star 2:

The child will learn to perform front and back crawl at an intermediate standard in the secondstar level. They will also be transitioning from learning whip kick on their back to using it on their front for breaststroke initial standard. They will also be working on gaining their endurance for their 100m swim.

Star 3:

In the third level of the star program, the child will work toward the more advanced standard for front and back crawl. They will also progress their elementary backstroke and breaststroke to the intermediate standard. With these progressions, they will continue building their endurance to tread water for 2 minutes and swim 200m without stopping.

Star 4:

While Breaststroke is progressing to the intermediate standard, the child will learn scissor kick which is a progression to learning sidestroke. Their endurance challenge increases to 350m, and they will learn a few rescue skills.

Aquatics Star Program Continued Star 5:

Butterfly will be the new stroke in this level as they have advanced through the other strokes.

The endurance challenge increases to 500m, and the child will continue to learn rescues and basic first aid skills.

Star 6:

Swimmers will continue to develop lifesaving and first aid skills. They will also begin to learn how to teach others to swim. This level encourages the swimmer to take responsibility for their own learning outcomes by selecting option criteria to learn.

Star 7:

Star 7 bridges to the YMCA Assistant Swim Instructor and Lifesaving Society's Bronze programs. In addition to first aid and lifesaving skills, swimmers will continue to build their abilities by selecting from a list of option criteria.

Adult (16+ yrs) Adult 1: For Adults new to swimming. Learn the basics and develop water comfort. Always in the shallow end.

Adult 2: For adults who have experience in swimming and can swim a whole length of the pool by themselves with an aid.

Adult 3: For adults who have experience in swimming and can swim a whole length of the pool by themselves without aid.

Lane & Pool Rentals Do you want to rent lane space or pool space for private events or instruction?

No problem! All we need is a minimum of two weeks' notice and the number of people attending. For more information and to book, please get in touch with the Aquatics Coordinator at luke.von.eschen@ymcasaskatoon.org.

Rates: Full Pool: $85.80/hour

One lifeguard is required for up to 30 swimmers. Each child under 7 years old requires one adult or guardian 16 years or older in the pool with them within arms reach.

Aquatics Private & Group Private Swimming Lessons If you are looking for more one-on-one lessons for you or your child, Private Lessons may be the answer. We offer two different options for Private Lessons. These lessons are student-led and strive to improve swimming abilities and skills for swimmers of all ages.

Private Lessons is a one-on-one lesson. $30+tax / 30 minutes (members) $35+tax / 30 minutes (non-members) Semi-Private Lessons are for 2 participants, usually siblings, to learn their skills together. $37.50+tax / 30 minutes (members) $45.50+tax / 30 minutes (non-members) *For private and group private swimming lessons, a parent or guardian 16 years or older may need to be in the water depending on the child's swimming ability.*

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations made less than 48 hours before the lesson cannot be refunded or re-booked. Private lesson bookings are subject to instructor availability. Lifesaving Society of Canada Bronze Medallion Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. In addition, candidates acquire the assessment and problemsolving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross.

Prerequisites: 13 years old by the final day of course. 100% Participation required.

Lifesaving Society of Canada Bronze Cross The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced training in the Society’s National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs.

Standard First Aid and CPR-C Lifesaving Society of Canada Standard First Aid with CPR-C and AED Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid is the most comprehensive first aid program for the general public and a prerequisite for National Lifeguard. Learn how to assess and treat airway, breathing, and circulatory emergencies; and manage medical, musculoskeletal, and environmental emergencies.

Certification includes CPR-C/AED. Ages 13+

Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Award (NLA) Full Course A Lifesaving Society NL certification is valid for two years from the certification date and must be current for employment. A current Standard First Aid with CPR-C and AED is required.

Prerequisites: Standard First Aid with CPR-C and AED and Bronze Cross. Ages 16+ by the first day of the course.

Recertification A Lifesaving Society NL certification is valid for two years from the certification date and must be current for employment. This clinic is for individuals needing to recertify their NL award. A current Standard First Aid with CPR-C and AED award is recommended.

Community Partner Groups Underwater Hockey (UWH): Beginners: Mondays 8:00pm - 9:00pm Ages 14 and up Underwater Hockey (UWH) is a safe, non-contact sport played between two teams at the bottom of a pool. Players maneuver a weighted puck along the bottom of the pool into the opposing team’s goal using 12-inch sticks shaped like car window ice-scrapers. Players hold their breath and dive to the bottom of the pool in order to push, pass or steal the puck from opponents. An official game of UWH is made up of two 15 minute halves with a 3-minute half-time. UWH is an exhilarating sport that gives you an incredible cardio workout and will leave you literally breathless at times! We have had players from 14 years old to 75 years old and of all shapes and sizes. We welcome all potential players of any ability or skill level. We teach players to use a mask, fins & snorkel. Come on out & try!

Advanced: Fridays 8 - 9 p.m.

We are a small group of amateur Underwater Sports enthusiasts Friday night sessions are designed for those who have their basic UWH skills (learned and practiced on Mondays) and are seeking harder, faster skill and teamwork practices.

The session runs from April 18 - June 19th with no classes May 22nd - 28th, 2022 A YMCA membership is required to register for this program.

Beginner Kid’s Judo – Ages 7 years and older Tuesday and Thursdays 5:00 pm-6:00 pm Limited to 12 participants Please note that parents are welcome to come onto the mats to assist in the class.

Intermediate Kid’s Judo - Minimum age is 7 years old and must have judo experience.

Tuesday and Thursday 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm Limited to 12 participants High Performance Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm. Limited to 20 participants.

Will have a waiting list and must be approved by Instructor to attend.

Space is limited. All participants MUST register through the ActiveNet Judo Saskatchewan Requires that ALL judo athletes, regardless of age, MUST pay a CLUB fee. This information is provided at the beginning of the session.

Community Partner Groups Kendo Wednesdays: 7:00pm - 9:00pm Sundays: 3:00pm - 5:00pm Kendo is traditional Japanese sword-fighting. Kendo players wear light armour and use split bamboo swords to attack targets on the armour. Kendo is practiced full speed and full contact but is very safe due to the equipment and rules. Kendo matches are fast-paced battles of skill and mental strength. Students must be at least 12 years old with no upper age limit. Saskatoon Kendo Club is a member of the Canadian Kendo Federation, which is the sole governing body of Kendo in Canada under the International Kendo Federation. Kendo accepts new beginners in September and January. Returning members, or people with previous Kendo experience from other clubs, may join in at any time throughout the year. If continuing from Fall, you will have to re-register.

No Additional Club Fees are required. No new beginners during the Spring session.

Masks are to be worn during all classes to ensure the safety of our community.

Community Partner Groups Wado Kai Karate Tuesdays & Thursdays Family Class 7:00pm - 8:00pm (Ages 8+ / Beginner - Intermediate skill level) This class will focus on traditional Shintani Wado-Kai Karate techniques, developing confidence, basic selfdefence skills, body-space awareness, and beginner sports techniques and tactics.

Advanced Class 8:00pm - 9:30pm (Ages 13+ OR belt rank of Orange belt and higher) *Note: white - yellow - orange - green - blue - brown - black* This class will be well-rounded, focusing on advanced Shintani Wado-Kai Karate techniques, self-defence (combat), fitness training, sport tactics, and Shindo techniques (short staff).

An art class where students will learn new drawing skills and have the opportunity to express themselves through visual art. Showcase your creativity and learn new skills each week. At the end of the session, you will leave with your own sketchbook and a new love for art.

Materials for the course are provided.

Explore and discover your artistic self. This class offers a variety of crafts to enjoy. Give free rein to your artistic creativity while enjoying a visit with other great kids! We will explore all sorts of crafts and encourage self-expression.

A co-ed, weekly, one-hour basketball session that aims to teach and improve technical skills such as shooting, dribbling, passing, and learning how to play the game, in an inclusive and fun-focused environment. *6 week program April 18 - May 4th, Program Registration closes April 31st, 2022

The Junior Leaders Program also focuses on developing healthy lifestyles and building positive relationships through fun, interactive, and engaging lessons. Leader Corps The Leaders Corps program enhances youth leadership skills through community involvement, active team engagement, mentorship opportunities and group activities.

The YMCA Community Action Network (YCAN) is an innovative national program that engages leaders across Canada to address community needs through service projects. The program, which is part of the Canada Service Corps initiative, supports youth with opportunities to identify and execute a local service project that is meaningful to them. Youth involved will work together to select, lead, deliver, and evaluate a service initiative in their own community.

SCHOOLS OUT DAY CAMPS Our SODC’s are a fun and exciting way for children ages 5-12 to spend their day when school is out. Join us in fun activities throughout the day such as; swimming, gym activities, art creations, and science experiments.

Each child is placed in a small group with children their own age and is led by one of our fantastic camp leaders. This year, we are taking extra measures to ensure that our staff and participants are safe. We offer before care starting at 7:30 am and after care until 6:00 pm at no extra cost. Registration is by the day.

Day Rate: $37.50/day for all participants.

Before and After School Care BASC Program Overview The Before and After School Care Program (BASC) offers a safe, fun, and stimulating environment for children ages 5-12. The program supports the learning goals of the school community while allowing parents and caregivers to pursue their other commitments with peace of mind. The YMCA serves 13 school communities throughout Saskatoon, Martensville and Warman, and we are always interested in bringing our BASC program to more schools.

Saskatoon Early Years Family Resource Centre Program Overview The Saskatoon Early Years Family Resource Centre is officially open for families!

The Centre offers programs and services for families with children 5 years of age and younger. Everything is free of charge to families and all are welcome.

What can you do at the Centre?

Families can join groups focused on music, art, reading, parenting, early development, and more. Parents and caregivers can connect with early childhood professionals such as nurses, counsellors, and early childhood educators. Parents and caregivers can play and connect with their children in the drop-in play space and through guided activities.

The Centre is a welcoming and supportive place in which families can play, connect, and grow together. All programs are by registration only; this can be done via our website.

What about COVID-19?

Due to COVID-19, things will look a little different at the Centre. Our groups will be limited to a small number of families, and families will need to pre-register for the programs they would like to join. We will open up our drop-in space for families on a pre-registered basis and space will be reconfigured to allow for thorough sanitization (we’ll be putting the pillows, puppets, and other fabric items away for now).

We will also be offering programs and resources virtually and through other non-contact formats. You can find out all the details about what we’ll be offering and when on our website at www.saskatoonfamilycentre.ca or email us at frc@ymcasaskatoon.org.
