mod.house
a minimal take on the classic doll house, with punch out furniture set and vinyl decals
This project was started by the previous industrial design fellow at Chronicle Books. My task was to continue the development and refinement of the project, which include: illustrations and photography for the graphic elements, e.g. wall textures and patterns, the design of the vinyl decals, the design of punch-out furniture set, an additional component requested by the MoMA Modern Kids team, and materials specifications for each component. moma modern kids prj | mod house

initial project brief |
To design a doll house that is relevant to the MoMA Modern Kids brand aesthetic and current trends, inspired by the styles, colors and materials of modern architecture (1930s to1950s). design requirements |
The design needs to be versatile, allowing for maximum mix and match opportunities, and compact for shelving purposes but still effective enough for marketing purposes.
additional-project brief |
To design punch-out furniture set to accompany the doll house using only 3 sheets of 9.40 x 4.65 2mm Art Board. design requirements |
The furniture pieces should be versatile enough to represent the different basic rooms in a house, such as dining, living and work room or even outdoor areas, but still cohesive with the doll house. The colors and materials scheme should also fit with the styles of the doll house, and complement/balance the strong graphics of the wall pieces.
Approximate overall size: 9.75” x 4.50” x 2.25”
concept |
Nesting boxes of variety of sizes. Outside packaging consist of: Sleeve/bellyband Open-bottom box that also serve as one of the walls of the doll house Basic assembly: Pull out the sleeve/bellyband and take out the smaller boxes (these are the walls of the doll house) nested inside the biggest box.

All 5 sides of the boxes will be printed with images of architectural features and/or building materials such as stucco walls, bricks, marbles and more. A big-sized box with cut out to serve as window, fireplace or TV set - to allow for both indoor and outdoor room options.

mod.family
modern paper doll set that can be played with and without the ModHouse
This project was a new component that was started due to the good feedback that the team have received for the ModHouse. The team had the opportunity to conceptualize the modern paper dolls (packaging, silhouettes, colors and variations) and illustrate the graphic details: hair shapes, clothing patterns, accessories and more. moma modern kids prj | mod family

project brief |
To design a set of paper dolls. complete with vinyl sticker clothing, hair colors/ shapes and accessories. design requirements |
The set must have enough pieces to illustrate a family, without each piece being too specific, e.g. gender, race, body shapes, age. The vinyl pieces should depict the mod style but still be harmonious with the colors of the ModHouse graphics.
Images: Mod family format exploration sketches. factors considered|
Follow the MoMA Kids branding and ModHouse aesthetic. Good shelf presence, with sale price at US$9.90 each, product needs to be hefty enough to reflect the cost. Outer packaging can be used as part of the Mod House. Ease of shipping.

Paper doll silhouettes exploration sketches. Important factors: Body proportions that are neutral for both genders. Sitting vs standing versions. Body postures - neutral vs characters
Comments on early sketches: the styling of the silhouettes are not sophisticated enough and the body shapes are too generic, even robotic.

Feedback on early sketch models |
The box dimension is good but it is too thick, not compact enough. Too many box pieces, implied high material and assembly costs. Decals/vinyl sheets are too narrow, hence not cost efficient. Open closet with hangers idea is interesting but might be too costly and unnecessary since the main play factor is the mix and match of the vinyl stickers. Need to cut cost to afford more vinyl stickers, maybe by changing the material for the packaging.

project brief |
To design a set of vinyl stickers that consists of hair shapes/pieces, accessories (scarves, bows and ribbons, hair bands, hats, eyewear), clothing for the paper dolls. design requirements |
Minimal, streamlined, bold aesthetics. Play with silhouettes and proportions (usually more geometric than flowy) to create drama and contrasts. Fabrics used are of big and small-sized patterns or in solid, eye-popping colors.
Features that may be suitable for paper dolls and still have impact in small scale format: plaids in colors, such as reds and navies, brighter ones for kids geometric, tesselation patterns in 3 colors or black and white big geometric shapes for clothes collars, simple and minimal in plain colors or simple bows for kids plain, bright colors, chosen based on color palette that is already used in the ModHouse, e.g. coral as alternative to reds and pinks. leggings with dresses and skirts
