I was I think 8 years old and it was back in 2001 when I first competed. No way it would have knocked my confidence, it boosted it and especially when I would do well. I always went to the Aim Series back then which is now called The Brits or the British tour. It was so amazing when I was young as there was a comp literally every weekend. I always loved the ones in summer when it was warm and just everyone was having a good time and not serious at all!

You started off as a dry slope rider, would you recommend that to people who can’t spend all their time in the snow?

I always say if it wasn't for dry slope then I wouldn't be where I am today. It’s crazy coming from dry slope as I never thought I would do this well! But dryslope is the way forward and especially at Halifax. It just seems to me like the whole dry slope scene disappeared over the last few years. I remember so well when I was younger there was so much going on and so many events and so many people. It just seems to me that many people can't afford it anymore to ride everyday like back then. But at least the indoor scene in the UK is thriving and producing some good rail kids!

I always used to say to myself that when I was learning something I would never give up and I always wanted to be the best in it. But the best way is to know your ability, this reduces the chance of getting injured and slowly progressing or you could progress fast if you’re naturally talented.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

Muller too as they’re are just bosses at everything!

This year I look forward to the days when you get to ride and progress your riding. Also getting to film is such a big thing that I love to do as I just love the feeling when you get a trick after working so hard on it.

What is your main goal in the future?

If you hadn’t pursued snowboarding, what do you think you would have become?

What would you say the best things about your life are?

Not sure really, I liked to think that I might have been good on a skateboard!

Getting to travel the world is such an amazing experience and getting to meet some pretty amazing people too along the way!

What’s your favourite trick? Back 7 mute with like a late cork. What off-board training do you do to stay in shape? I am a really keen climber too especially in summer! It keeps me fit and strong but I just enjoy the challenge.

I have a beer now and again but I wouldn't call this drinking, ha. I like to chill with my friends and have a laugh!

Mark McMorris, honestly this guy is incredible! Also from the UK I think Rowan Coultas is already progressing super fast and killing it! My cousin, Katie Ormerod is going to be one of the best girls out there when she is older. Have you got hopes to make it to the Olympics? Yeah I like to think I’ll make it! What does the future hold for Jamie Nicholls?

You’ve been really successful on a European level. How did you manage to break out of just being popular on the British scene?

Yes it does but I just live the boards and can't really see myself riding anything else.

No not really, if I really don't want to do something then maybe CMY but to be honest I love snowboarding and I never really think of it as my job... K

Filming for 91 Words for Snow when I was like 13 was a great experience but also maybe winning the Burton Rail Days in Japan was good and then going back this year and getting 2nd too!

You have always ridden for Salomon from the very beginning, does loyalty mean a lot to you?

SKI RENTALS Roman, JP and Algan met 15 years ago and are all good friends; Roman and JP grew up in the local area while Algan is from Grenoble. Together, they run the small but perfectly formed Barbylone bar in Les Gets and JP took the time to tell us how it all came about. "Algan and I used to run a restaurant together in Morillon near Samoens, then we decided we wanted to run a bar and came back to Les Gets. It was a clothes shop before we took it over, we saw the sign in the window saying it was for sale and decided to take it. Then we just had to get permission from the mayor in Les Gets to turn the shop into a bar and voila! All of the furniture in the bar is made by our friend Nico La Recup who owns a Brocante. When we opened the bar, we had very little money to make it look good. We asked Nico if we could fill the bar with his furniture and decorate it with all the vintage plaques he had and he kindly said yes. Everything in the bar is for sale except the TV…and the barmen! In the bar you have seasonaires, tourists and locals each night and everybody is welcome here, it’s not specifically English or French either. We are open to everyone and we welcome everyone. We are all old friends working together which makes the bar a really friendly, fun place to be. We got the name Barbylone from the name of the bar in a very popular TV show in France called ‘H’, it’s a funny hospital drama, a bit like Scrubs. The guy from the program actually rang us recently, a good friend of ours had told him about the bar so he called to say hey!

We sponsor the Les Gets Bike Park and Deborah Anthonioz because we think it’s good to support the local community. The other thing we like to support is Newcastle FC - framed and signed Newcastle shirts line the walls in our bar. We have a friend from Newcastle who we knew when we ran our first restaurant and he asked us if we wanted to watch a game. From then we loved Newcastle and now we go over there every year to watch a game. Newcastle is now a French team!

In a perfect world, it would snow every night and be sunny every day; you could get up early, shred all day, go for a beer then go home and relax. If only life were really like that! Unfortunately, sometimes instead of snow we get rain and instead of sun we get low hanging cloud and unless you’ve got some serious savings, most seasonaires have to do at least a little bit of work to pay off the season passes. That’s when everyone’s lives get a little full, what with trying to ride as much as possible, have a decent social life AND work as well? Where do we find the time?

The go-to ski resort job; you can get as much as free travel, accommodation, lift pass, food and you have stacks of time off in the day to go riding. There’s usually even time to get a beer in after dinner service. Downsides involve having to wake up really early six days a week for constant split shifts (cue falling-asleep-in-the-cinema tiredness) and having to clean things you never thought you would have to clean. But all in all a pretty sweet deal, especially if you don’t need too much sleep.

Probably one of the most sought after jobs in any ski resort because you’re pretty much getting paid to have a social life and you work at night so you can spend lots of time up the mountain! Cons to this are late nights, which means getting up early for powder days can be a struggle, and constantly going to work after spending a long day on the hill can take its toll, but that’s what down days are for!

that needs to be done! Aside from the obvious downside of having to clean other

Europe differs from North America and places such as New Zealand and Australia because most of the mountain jobs like being a liftie or working in a cafe on the slopes are mainly taken by French locals. And unless you’re very dedicated, it takes a lot of time, skills and money to get French instructor qualifications. However, in a place like Morzine, there are still plenty of jobs to be had, but the question is, are any of them as good as they seem...?

A clean driving licence and impeccable time keeping skills are required, as well as being comfortable with the fact that you could literally be working at ANY hour of the day. But early mornings, long days and annoying driving in the snow aside, actually a fairly chilled out job. You can listen to your own music, and you get to meet lots of interesting people, not too bad, really...just try to remember that while shovelling snow off a van at 3am.

Chalet Doriaz in Avoriaz has to boast one of the most beautiful views in the Portes du Soleil, which is perfectly framed by the porthole windows.

George Walton, 20, lives in Essert Romand and has competed at Freeze, Beanie’s Gap Session and the Ebouelle Contest in Les Gets. He rides for films created by Unity Productions and we caught up with him just before he was due to head off to Poland to complete the latest filming. "I was four years old when I first started skiing and now I’m doing my fourth season. I’m not very much of a competition skier, I like shots for edits more than competitions. First off, I got picked up riding competitions and competing, after that it all started getting bigger and better and it all just went from there. Filming is always pretty hectic. You wake up not knowing where you are, grab a car, go find a spot, build it, get some shots on it and then you have to find somewhere to eat! Then, when you wake up the next day it’s the same again, it’s just all about the shots. My typical day consists of waking up, going for a shred around, meeting up with friends in the park. Then we come down for a burger or a beer and that’s normally the ideal. Do I go up every day? No. I have to rest otherwise I start hurting and sometimes I am just a little bit too lazy to!

I come from a winter loving family. My mum and dad both got me into skiing and my two brothers are ski instructors. One of them is out here teaching now and the other is just about to finish his training, then he’ll be out here too. My worst injuries are my ACL, an ankle injury and my FACE! I kneed myself in the lip and split it open, they’re the only major ones. Having an accident never dents my confidence - I just come back stronger. I love the Portes du Soleil because it’s such a big ski area, which I know really well. I’ve come here since I was a kid and I have loads of friends and family here. One day I would like to do a season in Canada though because they’re snow is so consistent, there’s so much of it - just a lot of fresh powder to play in! My favourite three places to ski in the Portes du Soleil have to be the baby park, the Chaux Fleurie and the Prolays. But then I’m not going to tell you all the secret places I go to! THE TEAMS • Each team has six players on the ice, one goalkeeper and five skaters • Regardless of assigned positions, all players except the goaltender can go anywhere on the ice.

SUBSTITUTIONS • Substitutions are unlimited and can be made at any time. • A player can join the game on the fly - during the flow of play - as long as the departing player is within five feet of the bench and not involved in the play or with an opponent.

THE FACEOFF The game begins when the referee drops the puck between two opposing forwards.

THE GAME CLOCK • The game is played in three 20-minute periods. • The clock is stopped during all stoppages in play.

If a player precedes the puck into the offensive zone, play is called and a faceoff takes place in the neutral zone. Also, a pass made across a blue line and the center line is ruled an off- side pass, also referred to as a two-line pass. Play is called and the faceoff takes place at the originating point of the pass.

ICING Shooting the puck to the end of the ice from behind the centre ice red line. If the puck crosses the opposing goal line untouched, and is then retrieved by an opposing player, icing is called. Considered a delaying tactic, it results in a stoppage in play and a faceoff in the offending team’s defensive zone.

PENALTIES BODY CHECKING • A player can use a shoulder, hip or torso to hit or impede an opponent, but only when the opponent is in possession of the puck. • A body check that targets the head is illegal. • A body check to an opponent’s back is illegal if the opponent is facing the boards.

MINOR PENALTIES Note that the difference between a legal check and a penalty is open to interpretation and remains a source of dispute among fans, players and everyone involved in the game. • A player charged with a minor penalty is sent off the ice for two minutes, with no substitution allowed. The penalty ends immediately if a goal is scored by the opposing team. Minor penalties are called for obstructing an opponent. Infractions include: • Tripping, Holding, Hooking or Interference Penalties are called for dangerous use of the stick, including: • Slashing, Spearing, High-sticking, Cross-checking Penalties are called for dangerous physical fouls, including: • Elbowing, Checking from behind, Kneeing, Roughing

MAJOR PENALTIES • A player charged with a major penalty is sent off the ice for five minutes. The most common major penalty is fighting. If both fighters receive five-minute penalties, substitutions can be made. • At the referee’s discretion, an infraction commonly deemed a minor penalty can be increased to a major. This usually occurs if an opponent has been seriously injured or if the referee believes there was a deliberate attempt to injure.

The only difference between 1980’s ski fashion and the way forward on the slopes today is colour. Magazines may instruct you to stick to the primary shades and the primary colours only but transport yourself to 1982 and you wouldn’t spy one if you tried. Turns out that the sunglasses worn to shield your eyes from the glare of the snow were also pretty useful for the garish colours gracing people’s backs. Fluro fashion forever, it seems! The 1980’s saw the weird, wild and wonderful come to life with shiny, glossy fabrics and oil slick marble prints favoured by most. Headbands and legwarmers featured heavily, bringing an air of sport to the outfit but really did nothing more than create the ski chic look. The decade helped to create a new danger on the slopes – shoulder pads were so prominent that a slight wrong turn and your skis would fly high. In fact, the snow peaked mountaintops were speckled with a rainbow of colours, prints and sharp edges, that meant each resort resembled a disco far more than the idyllic backcountry. But, between the painters easel decorating the white space without a thought in the world, one less obvious trend was consistent throughout – cat eye mirror glasses.

This look was all the range and essential to complete your outfit but when it comes to feline fancy, practicality was not the one. The first few brands that designed these shades were often too dark, which, as time went on meant tinting was reduced, which is where the name stemmed from. Can you take some time to tell us a bit about yourself and where you are from? - I'm Alex Eveson, 30 years of age, born and raised in Glastonbury UK, currently based in London when I'm in England and Morzine for the last five winters. Although locally I'm known for putting on and DJing at the weekly dnb parties every Sunday at Cafe Chaud (and new for this year deep house on Wednesdays), in my 'real' life I work as an artist and music producer. I've been releasing records on a variety of drum and bass labels (V Recordings, Good Looking, Shogun ltd, Critical etc) for around 6 years and have been designing record sleeves from the age of 21. Aside from art and music, I always had a thing for throwing myself at jumps and handrails on whatever wheeled device was closest to hand, then in my early 20s I found snowboarding and it never stopped being fun so here I am! Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been designing record sleeves for a long time, what are the roots of your company, how did you get started? - It was kind of by accident but I suppose due to my vinyl obsession at the time it was bound to happen one way or another. It was 2003, I'd been DJing for some years already and started producing my own beats. Only 6 months before I sent a bunch of demos out to record labels (this was during dial up days so that meant CDs in the post). As I already had an art and design background, I decided to make a little more impact by designing and making a CD case that looked like a miniature vinyl record, complete with paper inner sleeve and centre label in the middle of a vinyl textured CD. The music wasn't quite up to scratch yet (it took another couple of years until I reached professional standards) but Renegade Recordings were looking for a new graphic designer, my cover art caught their eye and the role was mine. i had no idea what I was doing when it came to setting up layouts for print and dealing with things on an industry level but baptism by fire is the best way to learn and I blagged it. Things snowballed from there and I ended up producing record sleeves for the likes of Goldie's 'Metalheadz' and dBridges Exit Records before I became too busy with music to work as a freelance designer, so set up my own art/music fusion label, 'Channel 82' which serves as an outlet for personal projects where I get to produce sleeve art free from any kind of client expectations or brief (my favourite way to work!). You have some Amazing Illustrations, have you studied at all? If so where and what did you study? - I spent far more time at school doodling in the back of my books than doing what I was meant to be doing, so it made sense for me to go through the whole art college route when I left. I did a 2 year art course at college then went to study a BA in Graphic

Design at Arts Institute, Bournemouth. I really wasn't one for being educated (never really liked authority much and I'm a stubborn bastard which doesn't bode well for learning in the typical manner) and I got kicked out at the end of the first year...something to do with refusing to do any essays as I didn't see the relevance to a career in making stuff look pretty. Luckily, if i'm passionate about something I have a very obsessive nature so I just did things my own way and

Does your music and art intertwine, do they help to influence each other?

it worked.

- It's something I've brought together more over the years, culminating with the album project. I treated it as a whole and as such the whole thing is intertwined. I'd like to take it to the next level and develop a live audio visual show at some point performing with both music and imagery of my creation at the same time.

How would you describe your work?

You aren’t based in Morzine year round, what always brings you back here?

- I'd say with both my art and my music I strive to create pieces that encapsulate beauty, flow and sensuality with an organic feel throughout. Everything I do tends to be quite vibrant, as well as detail and line work, colour has always been a big thing for me. What has been the biggest inspiration to your work? - Artistically, my influences are a fusion of art nouveau, psychedelic band posters from the 60s and 80s, skateboard graphics and graffiti. Musically, in the early 90s I fell in love with the sounds of Massive Attack and The Prodigy simultaneously and as such it's always been my goal to create stuff with both energy and musicality in equal measure...food for the mind, weight for the dance. What is your favourite piece of work you have produced? - That would be my debut album I released at the end of last year on V Recordings entitled 'The Last Summer Of Love'. It brings together all of my musical influences from jazz, dub, folk, and psychedelic rock to triphop, rave, jungle and contemporary bass music and sums up what I'm about more than any other record I've released. It was a different one as before now I'd only ever released drum and bass but this is more of a laid back downtempo affair with a just a few dnb bits, I'm a big fan of listening to music in album format and I really wanted to make something that worked from start to finish. Obviously the visual/packaging side of the project was of equal importance and as well as producing the artwork I screen printed every record sleeve by hand, including additional 12x12" art prints that came with both the 12" sampler and the double vinyl LP and also produced a ltd 'gold edition' version that came packaged in a hand painted pizza box with a tee shirt. I pulled ink across a screen over 5000 times to complete the project! - The riding, the crew and the nights I do at Cafe Chaud. Over my career in music i've been lucky enough to play gigs all over Europe and the UK from Glastonbury festival and Fabric to Basement raves in Belarus and the deck of a boat in Belgrade as the sun came up over the city. As with any DJ, some gigs are amazing and some are just dry, Sundays at Cafe Chaud though, week in, week out are off the chain, it's been years since it's not been absolutely rammed and going off. Also, as the majority of people that come have no idea what I do outside of the season thing, the anonymity affords me the flexibility to really have fun with it and play styles I wouldn't normally be able to get away with at my usual gigs. If people are coming to see you specifically, they're coming for a particular sound, at Chaud however, they just want to party and I get to do that with them. The house nights on Wednesdays has been a really exciting thing for me this season as it's the kind of stuff I've been raving to in London this last year, it's great to be able to bring

What are your plans for the future of ‘Eveson’? - Well with the world ending in 2012, I was planning on surviving in a mountain cave, only to emerge and lead the remnants of our lost civilisation into a new age of harmony and enlightenment, all while bashing the shit out of mutant zombies and rabid cannibals. The world's still here so it looks like my plans are gonna have to change which is a shame as I had a whole outfit planned and everything (think Mad Max mixed with Mexican day of the dead and a poncho). This month I want to show you how to make the perfect Chocolate Fondant. This fool-proof recipe has served me well for years and the compliments it receives are numerous. For some reason people seem hesitant to make this simple dessert. I have found that once you have a good recipe (which you have now in your hands), the only thing you have to focus on is the cooking times. This is a dessert that needs to be cooked at the last minute. They basically need to come out of the oven and straight onto the plates. This could be the reason behind people’s fear of it. But it’s not hard. Let me show you: 250g good quality dark chocolate 250g butter 6 whole eggs 4 egg yolks 175g caster sugar 200g plain flour

desserts can be placed in the fridge until you are ready for them. They even freeze well, just remember to defrost in the fridge before cooking them. Once your main course is on the table and everyone is nearing the finish line, place the ramekins into your preheated oven and shut the door. Now’s the time for observing through the oven door. The tops of the fondants will start to cook from the outside-in. Once there is a small glossy center of each fondant, they are nearly there. As soon as this glossy center disappears, remove from the oven. This could be anywhere from 7 -15 minutes, depending on your oven. That’s it! Carefully turn out each fondant into your hand and place gently on each serving plate. Add your scoop of ice cream, dollop of whipped cream or whatever you are serving it with and take them to your waiting friends. Hot gooey chocolate will ooze everywhere when the spoon cuts in.

Preheat your oven to 180°C Put the chocolate and butter in a microwave-proof bowl and cook on high for one minute. Remove, stir and return to the microwave for another minute. Continue doing this one or two more times or until the whole lot is melted and runny. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well.

Prepare your dishes: I use metal Dariole molds, but normal ramekins and even those tinfoil ramekins you can buy at the supermarket work just as well. Brush the inside of 12 of them with melted butter. Add a couple teaspoons of cocoa powder to the first one and tip it out into the second, turning slowly as you go to evenly coat the inside. The cocoa powder and the melted butter will create a fine non-stick surface inside each ramekin. Carefully pour your chocolate mixture into each ramekin up to about the 2/3 mark. I serve mine up with roasted figs and fresh raspberries in a spiced red wine syrup and a tiny miniature fig & rosemary crème brûlée. All these flavours combine so well on the plate to create a truly decadent dessert. This recipe makes around 12, depending on the size of your ramekins. If you have less people, still make the full amount and either freeze them uncooked or cook them up and eat them cold the next day with a coffee. They are the tastiest muffins you will eat. From the 7th-17th March, Geneva will be hosting its 83rd annual motor show to represent and showcase the biggest, brightest stars of the auto world for 2013. The Motor Show has been running since 1905 and is considered to be one of the most important international auto shows. In the early days, the show hosted all the models from benzene and steam powered models at the turn of the century to all the major internal combustion engines! Switzerland is a popular choice of venue for the show as it is considered to be a level playing field by the world’s automakers. As the country doesn’t have an auto industry of its own, no one is seen as having the ‘home advantage’. For this reason, it is a popular choice for making big announcements and over the years new prototypes, technical breakthroughs and international partnerships have all been revealed. This year is no different in its innovation. For the first time, 10% of the models on display are clean cars and emit less than 100g of CO2 per kilometre. The Geneva Motor Show has always been committed to displaying its green credentials and in 2009, it was the first international motor show to dedicate an entire section to cars fuelled by alternative energy sources and systems. This year’s show will also be the 50th year of The Car of the Year prize. One of the most exciting elements to the show has to be the big reveal when new models and prototypes for the coming year are revealed. While exotic supercars usually steal the show, there is also a clear and sustained interest in more ‘mundane’ models! We took a look at some of the new cars set to be revealed at this year’s show. The Mercedes Benz A45 AMG is destined to be one of the most popular hatches available after

it makes its debut. Mercedes claim it is the most powerful four-cylinder production engine in the world. Mercedes quotes a 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds and average fuel economy of 40.9mpg; top speed is electronically limited to 155mph. It is thought the car will cost upwards of €37,000. The Alfa Romeo 4C made its official debut two years ago and this year the production version will be on display. The 4C is based around a carbonfibre chassis, and gets a new all-aluminium turbocharged 1.8-litre petrol engine that develops 296bhp. Drive is to the rear wheels, through a "TCT" twin-clutch transmission. The car is set to cost approximately €45,000. The show is hosted at the Geneva Palexpo convention centre that is situated next door to Geneva airport so why not rearrange your holiday to pop in on the way back home – it is well worth a visit!
