Jeremy Jones is one of, if not THE biggest freeride snowboarder in the world. When it comes to mountain sports, Jones takes it one step further; creating his own trilogy of films, setting up a climate change initiative and was even nominated as The National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. Fiercely passionate and dedicated to protecting the mountains from climate change, Jones famously shuns helicopters and snowmobiles and where possible chooses to hike as his main means of transportation to the backcountry. Jeremy was kind enough to take the time to have a chat with Yodel... Can you tell us a bit about your latest film, Further? Where was it filmed and what inspired you to film it? Further is a film I’ve spent 2 years working on where I travel to places for a month each time. We filmed in the Japanese Alps, Austria, Norway and Alaska.

All the trips were expedition style, we hiked everything we rode and spent up to a month at a time camping in these remote areas. You famously only hike for backcountry access, what problems have you met trying to ride and shoot in that way? Just to clarify, in Alaska we did use planes to drop us off at our Base Camp in the Arctic and we used these snow scooters, which are overbuilt snow machines with trailers that you can fit three people on. We also used those to get to our Base Camp as it was 190km from the main town. But yeah, once there we hike everything, it’s difficult and challenging but also really fulfilling. I guess it’s not really practical for you to hike 190km… 5

Yeah, I think it would be a lot longer trip if we tried that! Can you tell us a bit more about Protect Our Winters (Jones' green initiative) and what it means to you? I started it in 2007 because I was seeing change in the mountains and felt like us being skiers and snowboarders who are out there all the time and have an intimate relationship with the mountains in the winter need to protect them for future generations. No one else is really stepping up to the plate and I feel like we really owe that to the next generation coming up. What is your favourite thing about being in the mountains? I love getting away from that daily grind of society. I like how the mountains are how they were thousands of years ago. They don’t care who you are, where you come from or what’s happened to you - they're all the same for everyone. The mountains are a place to experience nature in its purest form and they require your full attention. You can’t get more into the present moment than when you’re in the mountains. That combination of things is what draws me to the mountains on such a regular basis. Where’s your favourite place to ride in Europe? Europe? Oh God, wherever there’s good snow! When Europe’s had a good winter, you can pick almost any spot and you’re in for one of the best riding experiences in the world. Who would be your ultimate line up for a snowboard film?

Well I think if you look at this last film Further, we have a great mix of riders who all share a similar passion and are all phenomenal snowboarders so I’d say from the legends of Terje Haakonsen to the up and coming kids like Ryland Bell. it was also really cool when we were in the Austrian Alps with Mitch Toelderer and Bibi Pekarek. Bibi is actually the first female we’ve had in one of our films, which I’m really psyched about. Your recent work sees you push a lot of boundaries on the mountain. Do you think you’d have been an adventurer in a different life? For sure. Exploration has been such a huge part of my life. I enjoy finding new things and not just on my snowboard, I also enjoy it on my bike, rockclimbing and surfing. I think that I’ve always been drawn to the spots that are a little bit harder to reach, have a lot less people and are more obscure and more unknown. What is your luckiest escape? The worst escape I've seen was while we were filming Further. I wasn’t the one escaping but someone we were filming with got caught in a major avalanche and I thought he was dead but miraculously he was OK and I’m pretty sure I gave up some of my luck for him to able to walk out of that! Is there anything you find so scary that would stop you from getting out there? Yeah, we go out in the mountains every day with huge respect and concern for the conditions and all the time we turn around and go back to our camp or car because it’s not the right day to

I started Jones snowboards because I wasn’t getting the products that I needed, I knew there were talented people who had similar views and I knew that I could evolve snowboards, specifically freeride snowboards. I wanted to do it first and foremost for myself and thankfully other people have had the same views. It’s done well as a company. What was it like being involved in The Art of Flight?

What inspired you to start Jones Snowboards?

Re

Yes. Definitely. I’ve spent my life as a proper ski bum I’ve just started getting paid to be that ski bum, which is pretty nice!

The Art of Flight was very different from any other film that I’ve worked on, especially my films that I’ve directed. It’s the complete other end of the spectrum. The level of production for that film was like nothing I’ve ever been a part of. Both the camera equipment and in general it really felt like working on a Hollywood film. Huge crews, huge budget, lots of helicopters and cameras! How would you compare the start of your career in racing to freeriding now? When I started out snowboarding I was really just seeking out good snow and the best terrain. I started back East in Vermont and I changed and adapted parts of the sport but it’s all been a quest to be in the right spot on the right day and having no conflict. So the difference is having my life set up so I can snowboard everyday!

Sounds Awesome… What do you see as the future of snowboarding as a sport and for yourself? I think that the sport will continue to mature, we are coming from a time when almost all of our energy has been towards teenagers. They will always be a very important part of the sport but now we have this group of snowboarders that continues to grow that is over 25 years old and we need to embrace them and not look at that age group as outcasts. On a personal level my snowboarding will continue to evolve, I’ve spent the last four years working on Deeper and now Further. I’ve learned more in the last four years than in the last twenty. I will continue spending long periods of time hiking around the mountains always looking for new dream lines. Thanks Jeremy!

Off-piste skiing has been enjoyed by people in and around ski resorts for as long as living memory. Unfortunately, it is easy to become complacent to the dangers presented by off-piste skiing but in reality it is an illegal activity in many places and situations. The use of transceivers, shovels and probes has increased in recent years but there are still plenty of people who fail to understand their importance.

ski resort standing at almost €20,000, it can be a costly mistake to make! The joys of off-piste skiing are however, that great that we can’t see people ever stopping. Seeing as 90% of avalanche accidents are caused by the skier or boarder themselves, we’re here to bring you some top tips on what to look for and how to ski off-piste responsibly.

Tips The case of a wife who died off-piste skiing in Austria at the beginning of last season was bought into the spotlight after her husband was charged with her manslaughter. The couple had been skiing off-piste together without any equipment when he set off the avalanche that killed her. It may have been an extreme case but it brought home to many the responsibility you are taking on when heading off-piste. The dangers also become transparent when people realise that most insurance companies consider your policy to be invalidated when you are involved in an accident off-piste. With the average cost of calling out a search and rescue team in a European

10

Look out for recent signs, the majority of avalanche accidents come as a result of slab avalanches. If you are constantly aware of your surroundings in the mountains you come to learn on which angles they are occurring and know what to avoid. Always check the avalanche risk, it is on a scale of 1 – 5 with five being the most dangerous, this should give you a good idea of what to expect and when to avoid heading up. You can find this online in the weather report or it will often be written on boards at the major lifts. It is your weight on the snow pack that causes avalanches when the slab

For this reason, head down one at a time and wait for your group in a safe place so that if they trigger an avalanche you won’t be caught in it or vice versa. Stick very closely to the line of the person before you, if they didn’t trigger an avalanche, you probably won’t either. Be sure to wait until the area is clear before skiing down following someone else’s tracks so you don't put them in any danger.

Beware of wind-loaded slopes. The wind will often cover certain slopes in extra snow, making them the perfect condition for some off-piste action. Unfortunately, this extra snow also makes them susceptible to the extra weight of a skier and more avalanche prone. Do not head off-piste without a transceiver, shovel and probe - even the seemingly most innocuous actions can end in disaster. They are necessary to help the people skiing around you as well as yourself so don’t be selfish and invest in the equipment. Have fun and stay safe!

"The Retreat is a beautiful former farm in the centre of Le Lavanchy and prior to its modern renovation, the last full restoration of the chalet was back in 1818. The chalet has been styled with key principles ensuring all wood is original or reclaimed and the fittings are alls modern in contrast. These principles led to having a mainly open plan design throughout the key living areas and using very modern fittings such as steel kitchen surfaces and contemporary Roche Bobois furniture. Final finishing touches come from a whole range of modern Charlie Adam prints - all themed on a funky retro-skiing genre. The Retreat is truly a home from home ordinary.........and it certainly isn't."

The links between environmentalism and skiing have been well documented over the years. Global warming needs to be halted to allow ski resorts to remain covered in the white stuff and yet the industry itself has its own negative environmental effects. It may feel as though sliding down the natural snow without the use of fuels is a pretty organic activity but it is not the case. Travel to and from resorts, the use of snow machines and littering are all to blame for the impact of skiing on the environment. There are a number of brands that are going the extra mile to do their bit and encourage environmentalism, ethicality and social awareness. We’ve chosen a few of our favourite companies who take it upon themselves to save the planet like true superheroes!

Picture Organic Recycling is the name of the game for nature-friendly Picture Organic. The company use both unused raw fabrics from the textile industry as well as roll ends of material to create their jackets. The fabrics create the lining of the jackets, hence their distinct and unique range of randomly chosen colours in each one. If these offcuts were not recycled they would usually be burned and the carbon impact of this process is greatly detrimental to the environment.

Magic Potion Many people do not realise that their ski or snowboard wax is not biodegradable and the collective effect of all the wax used on the mountain can be hazardous to the wildlife. Apart from this, they can also be harmful to your health containing fluorocarbons and chlorine. Magic Potion waxes are instead made without any fluorocarbons or in fact any petro-chemical pollutants and are 100% biodegradable. The company donate 1% of their sales to support environmental associations and the wax is made in the French Alps so its carbon footprint is pretty low for us to use too.

Volcom The Volcom V-cological series is dedicated to using low-impact production methods and sustainable materials. The T-shirts are made using organic cotton, hemp, vegetable dyes and organic stains. Volcom have also committed themselves to social and ethical consciousness with their orangutan print. Five percent from sales of the T-shirts and jumpers are donated to the Sumatran Orangutan Society, which works to protect the critically endangered species.

Liberty Skis Liberty were the first ski company to use bamboo in its cores, this is now a popular material for the core of skis. Bamboo is light, strong and eco-friendly and Liberty skis are the only company to use the resource in all of their skis.

The company also aims to set a positive example for the manufacturing industry by relying on wind power to create the energy for production of all their skis.

Merrell Footwear from Merrell is some of the most popular in ski resorts due to their wide range of waterproof snow boots. The shoes are manufactured using environmentally friendly processes and are always packaged in recycled, responsible materials. The company financially support many environmental organisations including the Conservation Alliance and The National Park Foundation. Their mission statement not only highlights protecting the great outdoors but also to encourage people to get out and enjoy it.

Patagonia The dedication of Patagonia as a brand to environmentalism is so impressive that it could take days to explain all of their eco-initiatives. The companies mission statement itself reads, ‘Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis’, incorporating an ethical attitude into its very core. Of the many standards employed by the company, Patagonia helped to found the European Outdoor Conservation Association. They also commit to keeping their clothes out of landfills, balance human water consumption with animals and plants, prevent overfishing, use environmentally friendly fibres and even built their own solar power plant in California. Now that is commitment!

The Penguins Hockey Team celebrate their 50th anniversary this year so we thought we’d bring you a brief account of how they got to where they are today. The Morzine Hockey Club is one of the oldest French clubs, formed in 1963 by a handful of Morzinois. Between 1963 and 1966, they struggled with little money and no official sponsorship but thanks to the solidarity and generosity of the friends who started it, the ice hockey team was born. In 1950 Jean-Jacques Mesnard became the first full time coach of the Morzine Ski Club. He gave a small toy penguin to his good friend Francois Baud (one of the Penguins’ founding fathers) to celebrate his success at the World Skiing Championships in Aspen which would become the source of their mascot. As well as the Hockey club, the penguin went on to become the mascot for lots of sports associations in Morzine including the swimming, tennis, skiing and football teams. Nowadays, the team far extends its humble roots of just a few Morzinois men. The team has homed players from Russians to Swedes, Brits to Canadians and plays in the Ligue Magnus; the national French hockey championship.

ONESIE OF THE MONTH If you stare at this onesie wonderment for too long, you have to physically stop yourself from singing the Fresh Prince soundtrack out loud. Neon yellow and hot pink go together like sun and snow…they both create a stunning, warm and yet momentarily blinding effect. That snowboard should probably be in a museum it’s so antiquated but we admire the dedication to all things retro by continuing to use it. You’ve done Will and Carlton proud with this one. We’re not sure those trainers are going to fare well in the simplistic metal bindings though…

The Kung Fujas have been around for a while now getting tweaked each year. They have been a stomping ski and a staff favourite for the last couple of seasons. The Kung Fujas have a 102mm waist with all terrain rocker making it an all round thrasher of a ski. The skis have a super soft tip and tail making them very forgiving but they're stiff enough to smash through everything with confidence. These skis are a genuine all mountain ski that can be taken anywhere and turn the whole mountain into a park! They also perform surprisingly well on groomers. Try it. I think you'll like it.

In July last year Mat Davidson, 33 and Tim Henderson, 22 took over Mamma’s on the Rue du Bourg in Morzine. We caught up with them to see how it came about and how they’re enjoying it so far. What brought you both to Morzine in the first place? Matt: A friend was working out here who let me know about a position that had come available in Mammas. I was in between jobs at home so thought I’d come out, it was the end of the season the winter before last and I just thought I’d come out for a month or so but ended up staying. Tim: I had done two seasons in Serre Chevalier and Meribel and then working back in Exeter in the summers. I knew Kevin G who now plays around out here and he was coming out for a season at the Nantegue so I sort of jumped on the bandwagon with him and came along! I used to ride dirtjump bikes back home so with the biking here in the summer I ended up staying because it’s more of a town year round rather than just a ski resort. LTD. Did you ever envisage you would end up living here? Both: No! M: I thought I would just do half a winter and then maybe stay for the summer but ended up staying for good. T: I actually went back to Devon after the first winter, it didn’t last long though - just 3 weeks before I returned to Morzine for the summer! How did the opportunity to take over Mammas come about? M: The previous owner, JM, mentioned at the end of last winter that he was going to concentrate on The Boomerang in Les Gets and it was going up for sale.

T: Matt mentioned to me about it and asked if I would be interested in working with him…..the next thing I knew we were getting money together. How has the experience differed from what you expected? T: In all honesty it hasn’t differed that much except that it’s completely flat out. At the beginning it was 7 days a week, early morning to late evening. M: I think I knew what to expect between working here and at The Boomerang for the last few years. T: It’s a 24 hour job! M: We can chill out a bit more this year with an extra chef and two days off. What has been the best and worst thing since you took it over? M: The worst thing was last Sunday night! Running out of stock after such a busy weekend, we just got slammed so quickly. T: The best thing has got to be being our own bosses, being able to choose what you do with the place; from the biggest things to what colour our plates are! Any decisions, you have to make them. What are each of your favourite things from the menu? M: Chicken Pad Thai T: The Mega Burger – it’s a whopper but proper! How did you meet each other? M: We met two years ago at a mutual friends party and then Tim was supposed to come and work at Mammas in the summer but three days later he was stood outside in an A and D’s shirt. JM ran out and asked, ‘what are you wearing that for Timmy? You look like a boy scout!’

How often do you predict you’ll make it up the hill this season? Both: Most days! M: We maybe won’t go up on a couple of days to rest up achy legs and bones…

T: …as well as the days where the paperwork catches up!

Morzine’s Largest Selection Of Winter Sports Equipment

What does the future hold for Mamma’s Morzine? M: We want to carry on with what we’re doing but to build on it, to tweak the menu… T: … also to keep things consistent and to what people want. As people say, “You can’t come to Morzine and not have the Mammas experience!”

Ski style and mountain fashion has changed considerably over the last few decades and when looking at what attire once graced the slopes, elegance was most certainly not evident.

1940s The 1940’s brought both men and women a chance to enjoy the most sophisticated winter sport of its time while also looking dapper. The war and all of its shortages did not cause too many issues for ski fashion, as outfits became more streamlined and practical, making each twist left and right that little easier. Zippers were attached to the bottom of trousers to enable better movement, finally giving dedicated skiers that chance to experience practicality.

Ski style and mountain fashion has changed considerably over the last few decades, and when

Designers started to paint with threads as colours began to seep their way in – now not only Tail Grabs and Iron Cross’ were the way to show off. Browns, greys and dark blues were splashed with bright yellows, oranges and reds, so each skier was easy to notice on the delicate white snow. Ski fashion took itself to a whole new level, with reversible jackets meaning it was down to you whether you wanted to match or not. With delicate pleats drawing down the line of the back, and military-esque buttons flattering the figures of both men and women, it was clear that it really mattered what you wore on the slopes.

1950s With the war behind us, wool no longer became a necessity, replaced by the modern but not so sophisticated fast drying nylon. Colour continued to be an important tool with pumpkin, teal and mustard placing themselves as the ‘hues of the season.’ Outfits were speckled with elegance as stretch pants were introduced, first designed by Munich-based clothes artist, Bogner. Attached with a stirrup at the hem, both men and women said goodbye to the fear of their clothes getting caught under the skis. Bogners displayed the muscular curves of both men and women, adding a touch of sex appeal to the slopes. Emilio Pucci also changed the opinion of how to dress in the snow, with chic hooded parkas combined with streamlined pants forming new dimensions to a winter warmer. If it wasn’t already hard to believe that this was the norm for the regular skier, a straw hat could also be spotted in there too. Join us next time to see where ski fashion went next.

Matei Apostolescu has had his artwork commissioned by some of the biggest companies in the world including Bombay Sapphire, Olympus and Coca Cola. He lets us into his world as a popular modern illustrator. Can you take some time to tell us a bit about yourself and where you are from? I was born in Bucharest, Romania in 1983. I started drawing at an early age but for reasons unknown my parents decided to send me to a classical music school where I studied French horn for 5 years. I re-started drawing at around 14, got into graffiti at around 17 and then I discovered computer graphics. How would you describe your work? Very tough question, psychedelic is the best term that comes to mind! But the term has many negative connotations so I don`t necessarily favour it! You have some amazing illustrations, have you studied at all? Thank you but no, I`m self-taught. Your toys are like an insight into the mind of a child designing their perfect toy, where did they come from, are you just a big kid at heart? I lived under communism for a few years and my family was really poor and the choice of toys was pretty limited in Romania. I used to model planes out of dirt as a kid to compensate. And yes, I am just a big kid at heart!

You have worked on designs for snowboards, are you a skier or a snowboarder? I have a board but I still need to learn how to ride it! When time will allow I will do it for sure, it looks pretty fun. I have my own Ride board with flower motifs, it`s called Flower ride. I`m afraid of skiing I never quite managed to do it, heh! Was the winter sports industry something you wanted to be involved in? It`s one of the few industries that allows artists quite a large degree of freedom. It has cool people with open minds so it will always be one of my favourite industries to work with. What are your main influences and inspirations? Music is my main influence, especially electronic music artists like Boards of Canada, Brian Eno, LFO and Aphex Twin. As for the visual side, H.R Giger. I'm also an avid Sci-Fi reader so authors like P.K Dick, Asimov, Frank Herbert, Neal Stephenson and Greg Bear made a huge impact on me. What is your favourite piece of work you have produced? My latest piece is always my favourite in this case it’s ‘Invitation’ (right). What job launched your career? It was a gig for Coca Cola, an exhibition alongside Sir Peter Blake and many other artists that they organised. What would be your dream project? There is a big ugly factory in the neighborhood where my parents live. It has some really big cooling towers (6-7 stories high) and I would love to be able to print some huge artworks all over the depressing concrete for a while. What are you working on at the moment? I`m exploring the strange political spectrum of today with some politically themed illustrations.

You’re on the mountain, it’s stacked with fresh powder, the sun is shining and you’re having the time of your life. That is until you lose a ski in all the white stuff. Anyone who has bust out of their bindings in deep powder can appreciate the pure frustration that comes with searching and searching to no avail. The ski retriever is a revelation for those who never want to lose a ski or snowboard or for that matter anything else on the mountain. The kit consists of a small handheld unit that you can easily fit into the pockets in your pants and two homing tags that come with both glue and a small screw. If you’re within 100 yards of the items you’ve lost then the receiver unit will direct you towards it with audio and light signals. Voila, your kit isn’t lost forever and you can continue on with your awesome powder day.

January is typically a poor month for film releases. Filmmakers tend to cash in on the Christmas holidays and not release too close to February’s film awards. That is not to say that every film released this month is destined to be a flop. 56 Up is the latest instalment in the ongoing documentary that has followed the lives of 14 children every 7 years since 1964 when they were just 7 years old. The series juxtaposes their dreams and wishes as children with what their lives have become and the challenges they have faced in the process. Whether you are a ‘Seven Up’ buff and have followed the programme before or new to the legendary series, this documentary is a fascinating portrayal of the human existence.

Each month, Tom Martin, bar manager at L’Aubergade brings us one of his signature cocktails from their evolving menu of 12 delicious drinks. This month, it’s the Fruity French Teapot.

Place your fruit rouges teabag into a teapot, typical flavours of the tea are cherry, strawberry and raspberry. Add hot water and the gin measure.

Ingredients: 35ml Gin

Heat up half of your white wine and add to the teapot, it shouldn’t be added cold because it will cause the mix to cool down too much.

40ml hot white wine

Add 10ml of vanilla syrup, stir and leave the teapot to brew.

Fruit Rouge Teabag

Heat up the other half of your white wine and serve in a milk jug to the side, this can be added according to taste and makes the cocktail that bit more interactive! Serve the tea over a cinnamon stick garnish. Enjoy!

10ml Vanilla Sugar

Let’s start with a dish that is easy to make, yet super stylish. A stunning dessert for 6 people that is sure to impress: Chilled cherry, port & vanilla soup with caramel & balsamic ice cream on a chocolate truffle with pistachio spun sugar

Ingredients: For the chocolate truffle: 400g dark chocolate, about 80% cocoa solids 250ml cream 3 tablespoons cherry liqueur For the caramel & balsamic ice cream: 6 egg yolks ½ cup dark brown sugar ½ cup balsamic vinegar 1 cup whipped cream. For the cherry, port & vanilla soup: Handful fresh cherries, stoned 400ml ruby port 3/4 cup castor sugar 1 vanilla pod

Chocolate truffles: Break up the dark chocolate into two glass bowls, 200g in one and 200g in the other. Add the cream and cherry liqueur to a medium sized saucepan and slowly bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and pour over one of the bowls of chocolate. Stir until melted and combined, then pour into a small square plastic container lined with cling film. Pop this into the freezer and freeze until solid, overnight is best. Next, melt the remaining 200g of chocolate in the glass bowl over a simmering saucepan of water until melted and runny. Do not allow any water or steam to contact the chocolate or it will seize and you’ll need to start again.

Caramel & balsamic ice cream: Bring the balsamic vinegar to a boil in a medium size saucepan. Once reduced to a quarter, add the brown sugar and simmer until dissolved. Place the egg yolks into a bowl and whisk until thick. Slowly drizzle the hot caramel & balsamic syrup into the egg yolks while continuously whisking until cool. Fold in the whipped cream, transfer into a freezer-proof container and freeze. This can me made in the morning of the dinner party or up to a week beforehand.

Cherry, Port & Vanilla Soup: Bring the ruby port to a simmer and add the sugar. Slit the vanilla bean down the middle, scrape out the seeds and add the whole lot to the port mixture. Continue simmering for 5 more minutes and then add the cherries. Remove from the heat and allow to cool. Refrigerate until needed.

To serve: Place a chocolate truffle in the center of each bowl and remove the toothpick. Spoon the cherries and port soup around. Place a scoop of the ice cream on top of the truffle and finish with a spun sugar decoration, if using. Et Voila! Give that a go this January and I’ll show you another tasty dish next month! Turn out the truffle filling mixture onto a board and remove the cling film. Using a hot knife slice the chocolate truffle mixture into 6 portions, trimming the edges to neaten. Using a toothpick inserted into the center of each frozen cube, dip into the melted chocolate, drip the excess chocolate off, carefully place onto greaseproof paper and sprinkle with crushed pistachios. Pop them into the fridge to slowly defrost until needed. Remove from the fridge 20 minutes before serving to allow the centres to soften at room temperature.
