Director’s Note It is hard to believe that 10 years has gone by. I remember when I first opened, a banker, skeptical of a “Yoga Business” and clearly not going to give me a loan, advised me that small business was tough and that I would be lucky if I could get through the first 5 years and if I made it to 8 then maybe we would succeed. If we made

it to 10 years, well then I could really say I owned a successful business. He went on to say that only 15% of small businesses make it and a yoga business... well now that was really something that would be a long shot. I thought, “Ten years seems so far away! What does he know? I know I can do this!” And here we are. Despite the banker’s narrow predictions, we are still standing and going strong. Although this journey has defiantly been a labor of love, with many ups and downs, lessons learned, trial and error and to be perfectly honest, even moments when I have thought I couldn’t go on, I am continually grateful and truly in awe of the

ANNOUNCEMENTS 10th Anniversary Events Fall 2010 marks YCM’s 10-year anniversary. During the month of October we’ll be gearing up for the celebration, culminating the week of Nov 1st - Nov 6th! Look for surprises, activities, freebies, and special events. Proceeds help fund the Karma Yoga Program. See p. 26 for a sneak peek of what’s to come!

Introducing Yoga-on-the-Go! The Yoga Center of Minneapolis is pleased to introduce “Yoga on the Go” otherwise known as YTG. You spoke and we listened. Over the years we have heard many of you loud and clear wanting more classes, which are more accessible with an easy monthly unlimited pass so you can come as often as you wish. We have added 34 new one hour vinyasa classes (beginning Oct 10th) that range from level 1 to 3. Same quality, more opportunity! You can use your regular drop-in pass to attend or one of our new YTG unlimited passes (to be used for YTG classes only). With an unlimited pass you may attend as many YTG classes as you wish per month. Our hope is that in addition to our regular YCM classes, these will provide you more opportunity to come to class as you are able, even when your time is short. See p.3 for passes and p.7 for the new schedule!

support and growth of YCM and its community. Each time I let my brain get the best of me and begin to doubt myself or the possibility of something so wonderful lasting and continuing to grow, all of my wonderful support systems magically appear and remind me of our mission to bring quality yoga to everyone, at any time of their life. So far, the universe has supported us in doing just that. So 10 years it is, and I must give my deepest thanks to everyone who has made this journey so rewarding and beautiful: To everyone who has stayed the course in helping us deliver what we believe in, who has trusted me and taken risks to go, in some cases, where no yoga studio has gone before, and to those who have stood

by when things didn’t go quite as planned and kept moving forward anyway with a smile and a new lesson learned... To all of the students, new and veteran, who have trusted and supported the Yoga Center to be a part of their yoga journey. So many of you have touched my life and the lives of the other staff here at YCM. It is with my deepest gratitude that I look to our next decade of yoga and the exciting evolution of the Yoga Center of Minneapolis. Namaste, Jennifer Gray

Helping you define your personal wellness needs, goals, and options YCM’s Personal Yogi Consultations help guide you to meet your personal, mental and physical health goals by helping you create a program of wellness services that is right for you utilizing YCM classes, workshops, programs and Dharma Wellness services. We understand that each student is unique. We wish to help you find your path to achieving your goals in a manner that feels good to you, is affordable, and fits into your schedule. To begin a Personal Yogi Journey, call to schedule a Personal Yogi Consultation at either studio location. If you prefer, you may consult by phone. New to Yoga? Once you begin your classes and/or services, your Personal Yogi Consultant will follow up with you to answer any questions. Have Yoga Experience? Take advantage of a consultation to determine how to deepen or create a consistent practice, weave wellness services and in-depth workshops into your practice, and explore other yoga opportunities. Pregnant? YCM offers a wide variety of services and classes to help make this special time in your life meaningful, comfortable and help you to bring a calm state of mind to the birthing room. Your yogi consultant will help you design a program to support you in a yogic fashion during your pregnancy. We look forward to getting to know you! The cost is $25, which will be applied toward your first classes or workshops! © Yoga Center of Minneapolis www.yogacentermpls.com | 612.436.4700

ANU...SHTANGA..MUKTI...ASANAAAAA?!

CLASS STYLES DECRYPTED

Although “Hatha Yoga” technically encompasses all physical practices of yoga, over history the yoga tree has sprouted many physical variations. YCM welcomes all styles of yoga, so in order to help you find your best fit, we loosely categorize the styles we offer so even if you’re not familiar with the specific tradition or practice, you will have a better sense of what to expect in class. Specific class descriptions are available on the website.

Vinyasa

Hatha

Vinyasa-based classes link breath and movement for a moving meditation. Poses are generally held for a shorter period of time so that transitions may become part of the poses themselves. This allows for more poses to be practiced during a class. Generally, these classes are more rigorous than what we term ‘hatha’ classes, and may involve sun salutations.

Hatha-based classes generally involve holding the poses for a longer period of time to allow for more exploration of breath within a pose. This allows more time for focus on alignment.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Slow Flow Urban Flow Jivamukti

Anusara Aerial Yoga Big A#%! Yoga Mi-an Yin Yoga Restorative Twilight Yoga Yoga for Flexibility Yoga for Back Strength

Tantric yoga is the original yoga of ancient India in which all other styles of yoga are rooted. Tantra literally translates to “extend beyond all limitations.” Tantra class pays special attention to the whole person and works to intentionally help you move energy in a productive and clear direction, detoxify your body and mind, build your inner fire and through sequences that are both dynamic (repetitive and constant) and static (still), and help you create space and strength in your physical body while you gain a better sense of clarity and peace of mind. Pranayama (breath work) is the cornerstone of the practice.

Experience Level

P: Pregistration required for beginner sessions. Register online or call 612.436.4700. Level 1/2: For those who have some yoga experience and are still working on gaining flexibility and need help learning how to modify poses for their bodies. Level 2: For intermediates who have yoga experience and are ready for more challenging poses, pace, and concepts. For those who know how to and willingly will modify poses to suit their experience level and comfort. Level 2/3: For yogis who are intermediates and up who are able to safely work into backbends & inversions such as Bridge Pose and Headstand.

Sweat Factor

Rather than heating the studios, the classes listed above build heat the traditional way, from the inside out! No intensity, no sweating Moderate pace with many rests Moderate to sustained pace, fewer rests Sustained sequence that builds substantial body heat © Yoga Center of Minneapolis www.yogacentermpls.com | 612.436.4700

(6-week series $90)

Meditation is known to provide many physical, psychological and spiritual benefits to those who practice regularly. It is a way to reduce stress and improve physical and mental well-being, and it is an opportunity to become still and look inward, to find the center of oneself. It is a means of enhancing our spiritual path using the tools of self-observation and cultivating non-attachment. It is the practice of stilling the mind and body so that we may begin to see ourselves, begin to gain insight into our true nature, and perhaps glimpse what it is that seems to sit between us and the divine. Whether you have a regular meditation practice, or are new to it altogether, throughout the 6 week journey you will enjoy a sampling of meditation techniques to guide you to the silence that exists behind thoughts. No meditation experience necessary. Sundays

Therapeutic Hand Mudras with Dr. Indu Arora Dates: Fri 10/15/2010

Location: MPLS Time: 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Mudras have the power to help heal physically, distress mentally or uplift spiritually depending upon the ones you choose to practice. The physical body is made up of five elements namely - Air, Water, Fire, Earth and Aakash (ether - the tiny intercellular spaces in the human body) and each finger represents one element. Imbalance of these elements disrupts the immunity system and causes disease. When a finger representing an element is brought into contact with the thumb, that element is brought into balance. Therefore the disease caused by the imbalance is cured. The joining of fingers creates an effect on the human body. Mudras can help cure breathing problems, digestion problems, help boost the immunity, balance the metabolism, and strengthen the nervous system & bones. Many organizational leaders are feeling like the old ways of “toughing it out” during a busy cycle at work just aren’t working anymore. One of the reasons is that the “busy cycle” never ends. There is more and more to do, and less time to do it.

Contin PR AC U TI IN CE G S

Through experiential left/right brain integration techniques, accessible cutting-edge consciousness tools, and applicable whole-systems thinking, we’ll look at ways to thrive in the “pressure cooker” environment of today’s organizations. We’ll use the principles to develop and support the everyday skills of creatively solving dilemmas such as “information overload, ” maintaining a sustained and inspired impact without burning out, meeting increasing demands with insight, calm and clarity. EFT is short for Emotional Freedom Technique, and is sometimes referred to as emotional acupuncture without the needles. It’s an invaluable resource you’ll want in your toolkit! Yin & Restorative Yoga with Tara Cindy Sherman Location: St. Louis Park Dates: Sat 12/4/2010 Time: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM Yin yoga is a form of Chinese yoga that works the six major meridians from the navel to the knees. This strengthens the immune system while stretching the connective tissue to release chronically held tension. The postures are all practiced on the floor and are held for 3 to 5 minutes. This enables one to harness the mind and breath and to release more deeply into the body, all while tapping into the vast reservoir of vital energy within us all. Restorative yoga, developed by B.K.S. Iyengar, is a form of therapeutic yoga. It is considered to be an antidote for stress and stress related diseases. Restorative too, is practiced on the floor with longer holds using the support of props to relax more fully. The practice moves the spine in every direction and counters the effects of gravity through supported, inverted poses. Like yin, it accesses the life force and builds energy to heal and nurture oneself from within. Whether you are new to yoga or an established practitioner, these styles of yoga offer a wealth of benefits. Cost: $40

Location: St. Louis Park Studio Dates: Sat 11/13 - Wed 11/17/2010 Times: Sat, Mon, Wed from 12-5pm Sun & Tues from 9am-5pm

Traditional Thai massage was created in India over 2500 years ago by the physician to the Buddha, Dr. Jivaka Kumar Bhacca. It was integrated into the temples and hospitals of Thailand with the transmission of Buddhism from India to Southeast Asia. The treatment consists of rythmic compression with gentle rocking, deep stretching and joint mobilization. Thai Massage is a very effective technique for treating a wide range of conditions. Practitioners have easy access to the body while working in various positions using bodyweight as leverage. Thai Massage is performed on the floor on a mat. The recipient wears loose, comfortable clothing. It is unique in that it works on the muscular/skeletal system as well as the energetic* body. *Work is done along the Sen lines, which are similar to the meridian lines known in the more familiar practice of Chinese medicine. The lines are worked with a variety of techniques using thumbs, palms, elbows, knees, feet, and whatever else may be available in the moment. Thai Massage is therapeutic bodywork and very effective for treating many different ailments. People often report feeling light and energized after a session as well increased ability to move their bodies freely. Chris Gordon, CMT, RTT, Experienced and certified yoga instructor has been teaching Thai Massage and leading workshops for the past seven years. He has taken two extensive trips to Thailand and has over 350 additional hours of training and coursework.

salutations and push-ups and crazy balances. I just sat there and observed for the entire class. But you came back. I kept my blinders on and tried one thing. It went from small accomplishments to “I can’t live without this.” I started going four or five times a week. By the end of six months I had lost 55 pounds, 36 inches and I was anxiety free. My responses and reactions to things were different and people noticed. I felt like I was a better person, a better mother, wife, daughter, friend. Why did you decide to open a yoga studio? I woke my husband up at 5:00 am and said “Why doesn’t everyone in the world do yoga? We need to open a yoga studio.” He said OK. I have a very, very cool husband. What were your ideas and intentions in 2000? I was not intending to teach but I couldn’t find any teachers willing to take a chance. I was working as a parent-educator in early childhood so I had that experience and I was teaching for free in my living room. I took David Swenson’s week-long teacher training and rented a space in Club Shelard. I called it Yoga Center of Minneapolis because I wanted to encompass a large area. Tara Cindy Sherman and Laura Lund joined me and a cousin invested seed money. Momentum built and we were on our way. Then I thought I was getting sick again and was very surprised to discover that I was seven weeks pregnant. Without going through infertility treatments? My doctor said my body was in balance. Where did you go from Club Shelard? In March 2001, we got out of the

health club scene and rented a space in Golden Valley. Someone jumped through the wood floor and we had to replace it. We grew out of there and into a studio on Excelsior Boulevard in St. Louis Park. I got my first loan. In 2003, apartments were being built in the Warehouse District in Minneapolis and I decided we needed to be there. That’s now where all the teacher training takes place. We grew out of the Excelsior Boulevard space and I had my eye on the present St. Louis Park studio on Minnetonka Boulevard when it came up for lease. That was a leap of faith, business-wise. But everything else had worked out and I knew this would. How do you balance yoga and business? Our mission has alway been to bring quality yoga to anyone and everyone at any time, helping people find their way in classes of 20 to 25. I am passionate about quality, integrity and intention, staying true to the idea of yoga. Being a business owner and a yoga teacher are two very different things but by keeping things simple I can pay my rent. How do you keep your teacher mojo working? I backed off for two years when my children were younger and the economy was good but I missed it. To be a good director I have to be a teacher; I need to find out what people want and experience it with them. I teach a regular Tantra class on Sunday mornings. I still feel as if I’m in the Lord of the Rings, carrying the ring up to the top of the mountain, but I can take breaks and I have a supportive staff. Many of your original teachers are still with you, growing along with the Yoga Center. How do you actively challenge your teachers? The question is always “What are you good at?” I want to give teachers a place to share their gift. It’s a balance

of what works and scheduling but I want to enable them to make a career and have a platform to teach what they love. How do you feel about competition? Fear can rush in. It’s also an opportunity to say who we are, to differentiate, to come out of the comfort zone and make ourselves better. Sometimes the formula is right, sometimes it needs to be tweaked. You have developed many of the classes and curriculums. What is your favorite creation? They have all come from my own struggles and different aspects of my life. J.A.I. Prenatal Yoga [named from her children, Josh, Annie and Isobel] came from my experience of childbirth and the realization that women needed to know how to use the things they were learning. I’ve attended births. That one pulls at my heart strings. Yoga for Transformation transforms me; I get to watch as people put all their faith in a basket and grow and change. Big A#%! Yoga is empowering — a whole population that might never come to a yoga studio is met with understanding and humor and made to feel at home. I’m very involved with the teacher training and continuously learning from that. What are the goals and challenges for the next ten years? More students but not bigger classes. Working each studio to its potential. Building our Karma Yoga funding so we can bring yoga to people with terminal or chronic illness. It’s like a root system where every program is a stem from another. But basically we want people to be happy. Isn’t that why we’re here?

THE KARMA PROGRAM Karma Projects in the Community Karma Projects have been run for teens at the Hennepin County Home School, full-time AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers, Interact, the Tubman Organization (Chrysalis), YouthLink, Resource West, and others. If your nonprofit organization or group of individuals would benefit from incorporating yoga or meditation in to what you do, please email becky@yogacentermpls.com.

The Yoga Center Karma Yoga Fund began in 2005. It was then that YCM added the Karma Yoga segment to the Teacher training program requiring each group to volunteer in planning and executing, at minimum, a 6-week yoga program for a Twin Cities community that would not otherwise be able to access yoga due to mobility, life circumstances, health issues or finances. As word got out, we began to receive requests from various organizations in the community, and some projects were extended indefinitely.

The latest Karma project was organized by YS23 for the Aliveness Project this past summer. The Aliveness Project was founded in 1985 to be a source of empowerment, services and support for those living with HIV and AIDS and has developed an innovative set of direct services and programs to address the needs of it members, including a Hot Meal program that runs 6 days a week, a Food Shelf, Meetings and Speakers for education and support, Complementary Therapies, including acupuncture, massage, chiropractic and energy healing, and Case Management. YS23 developed a gentle yet detoxifying Hatha-based curriculum, providing classes 2 nights per week. Most of the members that participated in the class had never done any form of yoga but were enthusiastic to learn. It was rewarding to watch the members learn, grow and develop their own practice over the course of the classes. We were able to make a donation of 14 mats and illustrated flash cards with benefits, drawings, and instructions for the poses taught, so that members who desired could continue their practice after the classes concluded.

To raise funds for mats and materials needed for these projects, we began running donation classes, and in the past 2 years have made the fund available to those with terminal or chronic illnesses who want to receive the benefits of yoga but cannot afford it to due to treatment costs or life situations. We are in the process of setting up a non-profit arm of the Yoga Center to make the resources available to all in need. By participating in our 10-year anniversary events or purchasing any special 10-year “yoga gear,” you are helping to raise funds for this program to help those in need of healing. While we have begun chronicling the karma projects of each teacher training group on our website, we also wish to give a voice to the individual students who have been helped through the fund as well. Here is one inspirational story of how the Karma Yoga Fund has helped in our community.

STORIES FROM THE MAT -Chad’s Story-

M

y journey with yoga actually started around the time Madonna’s Ray of Light album came out. Her interest in Yoga started the flame of interest as to what Yoga would look like in my life. Ashtanga was the first type of yoga that I experienced. Back in 2001 I took classes with Betsy when the yoga studio was only one room with warping wooden floors in a small building in Golden Valley. Off and on I touched base with my practice every once in a while until I enrolled in Yoga Study 6 in 2005. This deepened my practice in the extent that it introduced me to many kinds of yoga and meditation.

channeling much light on my behalf, my soul decided to reach out to the Great Mother and chose life. I have experienced on of the most tragic diseases of the last 25 years -- especially the stigma that can

go along with it. I was afraid that people would think I was a deviant, a bad person who does bad things, and that is why I have this thing called AIDS. The next two years were the hardest, deepest, life shattering fight for my life I have ever experienced. A

Life was moving forward until everything stopped and I received an HIV diagnosis in the summer of 2005. With much research and deep hearted conviction I was convinced that the diagnosis was scientifically flawed and that with a healthy lifestyle, things would be fine. This plan did not come into fruition. Within a little over a year I started to become very ill and after refusing the drugs for a good two years, I found myself dying in a hospital bed at Methodist Hospital in the summer of 2007. I was reduced to 110 pounds, waisting away, ready to give up and die. With my 6’1 frame, one can imagine the devastation many saw when visiting me those two months I was in the hospital. true fight that brought me to many encounters facing death in every aspect of my existence. Through this process came many sleepless nights, suicidal thoughts and at times true insanity. I felt I was coming out of my body and going crazy. Little by little my physical health became stable, my mental attitude towards the drugs more balanced and my desire to live deepened in my body system. A hard lesson was learned by not deciding to take the medical protocol. I had to find out for myself what was real and right for me. Surrendering to the drugs was a big inner battle that lasted for many years. Fear of being deformed, fear of looking sick and losing my good looks all frightened me to the point where I would have physical and mental anxiety attacks. A thought came into my head to contact Jennifer Gray to ask for help. I met with her last winter and with

the help of the Karma Yoga fund, she was able to extend her hand to help me in my pursuit in finding my heart, soul and body, bringing it back from the darkness that I had experienced the last few years. My energy was literally shattered into many pieces, parts of my soul lost in the cosmos. With the help of Jen, the Karma Yoga Fund, and the simple practice of stepping on my mat every day with gratitude for all the blessings that have been received from this illness, I am on the journey of finding true love, light and peace in my heart, body and mind. Tantric yoga has and is bringing the Light back into every cell of my body. Major damage from infection has caused painful neuropathy and vision problems. My right eye’s retina became infected with a disabling virus that has caused much vision loss. Being part of the Yoga Center through the Karma Yoga Fund has given me the ability to face my disabilities with great compassion and embrace my whole self every day, wherever it is at. Every time I step on my yoga mat I am thankful I am still alive, thankful that I have the ability to balance and stand, to visually focus on my feet and hands. I am even thankful that I have the opportunity to do standing poses and fall out of balance.

Chad with nephew, Elijah at the MN State Fair

Every time I fall out of a pose, it makes me smile inside that I am even able to go this far. My shaky legs and numb feet allow me

to reflect on the inner balance that is needed. The meditation and tantric breathing has recovered much of my true self and energetic purpose after such a devastating illness. As a Two-Spirited, a gay man, I have gone to great depths within my body and soul to find the love and respect for myself that is so desperately needed. I believe that deep shame and self hatred was the deeper cause of this illness. My hope and goal is to unit all the parts of me, to receive all the love and light the Universe has to offer me, and to love every part of myself to great lengths of overflowing light that it may spread and unite with everyone that is around me. We are all beautiful, breathing, physical beacons of Light. The fire in each of our belly’s shall burn away all the darkness and give us the ability to flow in the energy of pure love and acceptance. Build up the courage of the heart for it does have literal power in every dimension. Things are still scary, and always will be. Life will always have its ups and downs. But the power can grow little by little if you let it. After only a season of truly surrendering to my practice, I find myself excited once again, like a child reborn into an exciting new world full of fun and great adventure. Calm the mind and learn to experience your body and feelings without its chatter. Have the courage to step out, reach out with the courage that is in your heart and start loving. This stuff really works, and I hope to be an example of that.

Community Spotlight Our Featured Student Story... Sue Meyers It has been a year since I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Seems like just yesterday. The past year is rather a blur - but a good blur. After undergoing a lumpectomy for my cancer last September, the oncologist proceeded to inform me that even though my cancer was non-aggressive, she was recommending both radiation and chemotherapy. She said it would make me tired and probably run down but it would be fine after awhile. That’s exactly what I didn’t want to hear. I’m a self employed music teacher - so if I can’t work, I can’t get paid. I decided that there had to be other options. I wasn’t going to do radiation OR chemo. My choice - to get healthy. I should also mention that I am a Type 2 Diabetic and was about 180 pounds overweight morbidly obese, as they say. So, where to start? One of my students’ parents is a health consultant and she connected me with a nutritionist who encouraged me to start eating real food - not processed foods. I needed to work at getting my blood sugars down and off my medications. I did a lot of research on what can cause cancer (obesity, high blood sugars, junk food) and what can help protect you (broccoli, cauliflower, real food).

I met with my regular doctor and we changed my diabetes medications. I immediately lost 30 pounds. As I started to feel better, I decided that I would try something I’ve always wanted to try - YOGA. After checking things out online, I settled on the Yoga Center of Minneapolis. After all, they had a class called “Big A%#! Yoga,” something I could relate to.

was the beginning of my big life change. Jennifer Gray shared with me her story and why she started the business. I told her I was very hesitant about getting into a class situation because I was sure I seriously would not be able to get up off of the floor once I got down there. She recommended that I work with Tara Cindy Sherman for awhile to start out in December.

I called and it was recommended that I talk to the owner. That

This was the second best decision of my life. Tara was very sensitive

to my needs and helped me to realize what I was able to do and how to adapt the rest. By January, I ventured into Jen’s Big A%#! class. It was tough at first. I laughed when we would do core exercises - I have no abs! Couldn’t even hold my legs staight up in the air. At the end of January, I tried the detox week and actually survived. The detoxing was easy because by then I had been eating the “right” kind of foods for a few months. The yoga was tougher. I was also introduced to accupuncture with Jennifer Johnson. We started sessions to help with all of the edema and poor circulation in my legs from the diabetes. By the end of March, people were starting to notice. It was a great feeling. I started taking hatha and Jen’s Tantra class when my schedule allowed it. By Mother’s Day, I had lost 100 pounds and felt great. I could actually get up and

down off of the floor and I could do most of the yoga poses. This summer, I started weight training, which has also helped with my yoga, and I completed another detox week. The yoga was even tougher because I could actually DO IT. I can still remember when I did my first “Down Dog” from the floor, my first “Pigeon Pose” without supports, and recently I finally managed to “float” my feet about a foot closer to my hands. I’m getting there. As I said - it’s been a year. This week I met again with my regular doctor and my oncologist. All of my labs were normal: cholesterol, trigicerides, blood sugar levels. My blood pressure was down to 117/59 and my last mammogram was normal. I am no longer on ANY prescription medications. My doctor moved me out of the “diabetic” category and said, “see

you in four months.” My oncologist looked at me and shrugged her shoulders, “I don’t know what else I need to do for you. You’re doing great.” To date, I’ve lost 136 pounds moving me from the obese category to the “merely overweight” one. The edema in my legs is gone. My dogs have also benefitted - one lost 5 pounds and the other 3, so they are now at their prime weights. I want to thank all of the Yoga Center teachers and staff who have helped me on my journey Jennifer Gray, Tara Cindy Sherman, Moya Matthews, Aleeah Sheehan, Ted Rosen, Jennifer Johnson, Emily Floyd and others. You are my heros! Thank you so much for helping me, coaxing me and inspiring me to be more than I was. You all helped me to save my life.

Yoga Psychotherapy Mat and couch unite.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

T

here is increasing acceptance of yoga and psychotherapy as complimentary to one another. While it may seem an obvious pairing, traditional health care settings are beginning to recognize the importance of integrating the mind and body. This increased legitimacy in the medical realm will likely lead to increased insurance coverage and widespread treatment. Yogic philosophy, with its emphasis on self-awareness, and connecting the mind, body, and spirit, partners beautifully with psychotherapy with its focus on thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. For psychologists, integrating the mind, body, and breath is crucial to healing the whole person. The merging of asana, pranayama, meditation, and talk therapy, combined with the trust earned between a therapist

and the client, can be a powerful way for the whole person to heal. A salient example of how the yoga and psychotherapy combination work effectively is seen in clients with anxiety. Anxiety disorders are the number one mental health problem afflicting Americans, including generalized anxiety, panic episodes, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social phobia, and certain types of insomnia, among others. Dialogue and talk therapy can elicit a conscious understanding of the precipitating events, associations, and triggers for the anxiety. This consciousness and insight paired with manas (mind) the practice of calming asana (body) and pranayama to manipulate and calm the nervous system, combine to create an empowered individual able to form new associations, neural

pathways, and bodily memories. In the case of insomnia, I may suggest the client engage in particular behaviors in the hours before sleep. Often this includes incorporating their dosha and using restorative asana and meditative breathing. Rather than a formula, a blending of eastern and western traditions is used to keep the client from feeling “stuck” and allowing for deep release energetically, physically, and emotionally. The idea of releasing and “letting go” is particularly important with regard to anxiety disorders in which the individual fears the future or fears the unknown, yet feels powerless to control or prevent the future. Understanding the layers within our body and psyche that contribute to undesired behaviors -- and how our mind, body, breath, and energy work synergistically,-- can be the key to self-awareness, making changes, and having greater self-compassion. Speaking with

Max Strom

we can find that truth from wherever we hear it. Too often people become attached to one path, when in fact spiritual truth is all around us. How did your varied experiences as a musician, filmmaker, and yoga teacher influence the spiritual being that you are today? I was devoted to art and I think we can learn a lot about selves through art, though sometimes we get fixated on creating pieces of art instead of recreating ourselves. There are artists who known for being not nice, and yet they create beautiful pieces. Art was not opening me emotionally to other people and I was still stuck in some ways that I was in years before. What advice would you have for yoga practitioners who come from a religious faith tradition and want weave the spiritual teachings of yoga into their religious practice?

I

nnovator, teacher and author Max Strom is known for inspiring and impacting the lives of his students and has become one of the most respected teachers of personal transformation and yoga worldwide. His teachings are a culmination of his life experience and decades of study and application. His methods address the internal, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our life, as well physical healing and health. He has recently published the book, A Life Worth Breathing, and will share his insights into yoga, spirituality and

transformation with the Yoga Center in November. What are the influences that started you down your spiritual path? Who or what inspires you now? Originally, my own in experiences in life- questioning life as a young person, “What does it mean to be human and why are we here?” I don’t have one particular teacher that I adhere to; I look for the wisdom that inspires me wherever I can find it. If we keep our eyes and ears open

I think that it is fantastic. I don’t think yoga asks you to change your religion; it asks to live it more deeply. Many people who consider themselves devout live on antidepressants. Yoga can help. [There is a paradox in] a religious person who has no doubt taking a medication from someone who they don’t know versus using a time- tested practice of over 5000 years [to heal themselves]. Christianity is a young religion compared to Hinduism, and many aspects Christianity were borrowed from Hinduism. For example, the stature of hands together to prayer, kneeling to pray, and the use of incense in the Catholic Church. Incense has been used in India for several thousand years. We already utilize things from other religions. They work and help us. It doesn’t mean you’re not a good

Christian [if you practice yoga]. Yoga helps you become more healthy when you focus and meditate. What you focus and meditate on is up to you. When you reflect on your travels and the breadth of your spiritual studies, is there another culture that Americans could look to as a benchmark for incorporating spirituality into daily life? One thing I really admire about India is that historically it has been very tolerant of other religions. In Hinduism there is the belief that you worship the deity of your choice. Of course, since the division of India, there has been more religious intolerance. In America we have freedom of religion, but we don’t seem to have much tolerance of other religions that are not our own. YCM has a strong teacher training program. Many of the students in this program find themselves teaching students who work in a corporate setting. How would you advise these teachers to influence or encourage their students to inject a yogic spiritual mindset into a corporate environment? What would that look like to you?

Through ethics…ethics is a big part of yogic history…that would be a really good place to start. Most of our economic problems have been caused by an ethical collapse. The people involved in the collapse are highly intelligent, but it’s ethics that is a weak link. We need to teach people how to bring win-win scenarios vs. crush-your-enemy scenarios to the work place Is it our responsibility as yoga teachers to teach our students these ethics? It depends on the aim of the teacher. If you are teaching a stretch and strength class, probably not. But, if you want to inspire people to go deeper into themselves…you have a great responsibility and privilege. People actually listen to us to for an hour and a half. Inject simple ideas particularly at the end of class because people are open minded…besides hips and back opening through yoga, eyes and ears and hearts open and we are more likely to hear wisdom at the end of class. When we inject very simple ideas with few words as possible we can provoke thought. I ask students to focus on someone or thing they feel gratitude towards, and when they do, their hearts fill immediately. The heart cannot hold gratitude and anger at the same time. And, when in gratitude, they are in new state. Once in gratitude they are able to forgive and access compassion.

In your article “The Global Impact of Yoga” published in April in the Huffington Post, you comment that “worldwide, yoga is being embraced primarily by college-educated, upper-middle-class thinkers and businesspeople in positions of power--the very strata of society that has the power to make the changes this world so desperately needs.” How do we in the positions of power bring the spiritual truths of yoga to those marginalized from the power structures of our society and our world? Why are we finding that in our country, yoga is a phenomenon embraced by the upper middle class? People are too quickly thinking, “Upper middle class and upper class…oh, that’s bad and elitist.” and they are missing the point. The point is the world is in crisis right now and we need to make changes fast. People in power are the ones who need to make the changes. For the benefit of humanity, mammals, and the biosphere, I am thankful that these people are yoga practitioners: there is yoga in the Kremlin, the White House, the CIA, and the World Bank. All of these agencies have yoga that didn’t eight years ago. In terms of making global changes, it is fantastic. What legacy do you want to leave as a yogi, teacher, spiritual guide, human being? I believe that a true spiritual journey means to delve within. Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is within you,” so why are we looking outside ourselves? If l can help people remember that, I have done my part for humanity…even if it is just for a few people. Laura Honeck, mother and Yoga Study 20 graduate, resides in Maple Grove

Colonel Mustard (Seed) or “Pardon me, would you have any Grey Poupon?”... Of the many cooking classes I have experienced over the years, one image usually comes to mind first: local Indian chef and cookbook author extraordinaire, Raghavan Iyer, teaching us how to pop mustard seeds. Talk about fragrant! Simply sauté whole mustard seeds (brown or yellow) in oil until they pop. Watch your pan carefully because the seeds can burn quickly and the “popping” causes oil to splatter a bit. In ayuervedic cooking, mustard seeds are heating and pungent, calming to the vata and kapha doshas and provoking to pitta. Mustard seed poultices reduce edema and muscular pain. Mustard is also a digestive. (Informational sources: The Joyful Belly and In Depth Info.com websites and Ayurvedic Cooking for Self Healing by Usha Lad and Dr.Vasant Lad.)

Sweet Potato with Pumpkin Spice and Mustard Seed 1/4 c Yellow Onion 1/8 tsp Mustard Seed 1/8 tsp Salt (Mineral Salt)

1/8 tsp Cinnamon 2 Tbsp Sunflower or Canola oil 1/8 tsp Nutmg

(adapted from Joyfulbelly.com)

1/8tsp Ginger (Dried) 2 c Chopped Sweet Potato

Peel the potatoes and cut into small pieces (about 1” size). Put cut potatoes into a medium sized pot and cover with water. Add salt. Bring water to boil and cook on medium heat until soft but not mushy (approx. 10 minutes- begin checking after 5 minutes). Cut onion into thin wedges. Saute the mustard seeds in oil until they begin to pop. After the seeds stop popping, remove the pan from the heat and add the remaining spices. Return the pan to the heat and cook for 30 seconds, until fragrant. Add the onion to the pan and cook until translucent, about 3 minutes. Add potato and fry gently without mushing them. Sprinkle with a dash of salt when potatoes are cooked through. At this point, the dish can be eaten as a chunky stew or side dish, or you could hand-mash the potatoes to a “comfort food” consistency. This dish is also a flexible filling for appetizers or could be served over pasta: Colonel Mustard to the rescue!

Variations: Appetizer:

Mash potato mixture and use as a filling in phyllo cups (sold in the freezer section with phyllo dough). Heat filled phyllo cups in a 350 degree oven until the cups are golden brown, approximately 7-10 minutes.

Pasta “sauce”: The potato mixture can be used “as is” over firm pasta, such as al dente farfalle or penne.

Sprinkle with freshly grated parmesan cheese. You can create a looser sauce by placing the potato mixture into a blender (or use a handheld immersion blender) and puree to the desired consistency. **Bon Appetit!
