Consciously Create the Life You Desire & Deserve Fall has arrived in all its beauty as it provides us with a sense of transition. The journey of the health

conscious woman ˗ the theme of this issue ˗ is a series of transitional seasons. She realizes and

desires change and growth, a sort of awakening.

Developing greater consciousness of what she eats, how she moves and with

whom she spends her time are critical components. She begins to eliminate toxic foods, activities and people from her life. She takes the time to go within and consciously create the life she desires and deserves.

Fall is a great time to deepen our connection to ourselves and contemplate what

we want for our coming life seasons. Life is too short for drama and illness, especially when we could instead be enjoying life; biking the Katy Trail, kayaking

the scenic Ozark waterways, hiking beautiful state park trails or making plans for enjoying ski season.

When we spend our energy and money on healthy food and activities, we attract

positive people and life expands. Just as the body can heal itself given the proper nutrition and holistic treatments, we can also heal our minds from negative thinking. We can focus instead on peace and creativity.

We are all completely responsible for our lives. When we are in alignment with our desires for love, money and fulfillment, they come into our lives. When we focus on what we don’t have, we get more of that. What we dwell on grows. Focus on the beauty of autumn, count your blessings and more will come.

Reach out for support from the many resources in this issue to continue your

journey as a health conscious woman (or man). Successful people ask for support, seek it and pay for it! No one reaches the top of a mountain alone.

Health-Conscious Woman

Five Tips to Becoming a HealthConscious Woman

by Christine Salter, MD, DC Health conscious living is a deliberate and conscious effort to live well. Good health is not something that just happens; it is experienced by being disciplined with a lifestyle that requires simple everyday habits that add up to vibrant health and wellness. And living the “good life” is neither difficult nor costly as some would have you believe. The following tips will start you on the path to health conscious living:

1

In order to boost your own level of consciousness, it is important to be fully aware of the food which you are consuming in your diet. Also, targeted supplements have long been known to help aid in mental processing and physical functioning.

2

Being physically active will raise your consciousness by promoting healthy brainwave patterns, healthy neurotransmitter levels, and improve the communication throughout your nervous system. Dancing is physical activity that is easy, fun, and empowering.

3 Expressing gratitude on a daily basis is a

very positive, fulfilling exercise to practice. Ways to express gratitude on a daily basis include: giving thanks for your food, expressing gratitude for yourself and others through prayer, and expressing thanks to others for having them in your life.

Remember that thoughts are powerful and will impact your body's function. So keep them positive and thankful. Christine Salter, MD, DC is the Medical Director for The Centre for Vibrant Health and Wellness.

4

What sort of things make you happy? Make a long list of everything that makes you happy in life and act on your listed items. Feeling and experiencing happiness in your life also will give you the powerful drive that it takes to make yourself more health conscious.

5

The act of simply closing your eyes, folding your hands and saying a prayer will raise your level of health consciousness. There are many different ways to practice prayer and many different disciplines, that when combined with prayer, enhance the power of your conscious message. Yoga & Spa Magazine • Fall 2015

What Are Your Symptoms Telling You? by Dr. Amy Davis M.D. The body reveals what is true. It tells a story. Symptoms are not simply symptoms. They are the body’s cry for help. Symptoms occur when something has gone out of balance in the body. It could be a sign of deficiency, infection, allergy, toxicity, poor digestion, etc. Functional Medicine identifies the Root Cause of disease, and recognizes that symptoms manifest and provide clues to the underlying cause. The symptoms experienced provide key information to help identify and treat the root cause. Symptoms that correlate with digestion and the gut microbiome are among the most common. They provide us with the opportunity to identify and treat underlying causes of many disease processes. There are three food groups that are needed to survive. Each food group serves different and important functions. Carbohydrates provide the fuel (energy) for muscles and the nervous system. Proteins are mainly for structure and only used for energy when carbohydrates are not available (as in a starving state). Fats are important to digest and process properly because they serve so many functions. Fats provide four-to-five times more Energy than carbohydrates, they provide Fat Soluble Vitamins (D, E, K and A), Hormones (communication system of the body), the Structure of the nervous system and brain (90% of the brain IS made of fat) and impacts Immune Regulation. Improper digestion or processing of any of these food groups leads to characteristic symptoms. Symptoms and Possible Indications 1. Carbohydrate craving – poor digestion of carbs and abnormal microbiome. 14

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Fall 2015

2. Sugar craving – poor carbohydrate and fat digestion. 3. Bad breath – indicates either dental problems or poor digestion. 4. Constipation – frequently occurs when people don’t digest fats well or abnormal gut flora. 5. Undigested food in stool – poor digestion in general. 6. Foul smelling stools – poor digestion and abnormal gut microbiome. 7. Fatigue – frequently comes from poor digestion of carbs and fats, abnormal flora or food sensitivities. 8. Poor endurance – poor digestion and processing of fats. 9. Fluid retention or bloating – poor digestion or inflammatory foods. 10. Gassy – poor digestion and abnormal flora. 11. Hangover feeling when no alcohol has been consumed – poor carb digestion especially if sugar also consumed, or food sensitivities.

12. Heartburn – poor protein digestion or flora imbalance. 13. Frequent infections – poor carbohydrate digestion, fat processing or abnormal flora. What can you do to help? Supporting digestion and flora with digestive enzymes, probiotics, fiber, omegas and herbals can favorably impact many symptoms. Choosing the right support for your particular needs can be challenging. We can help get you back on the path to optimal health. Wishing You the Best of Health! Now that fall is upon us and winter is coming, it's time to prepare for this change of season. During the next few months there will be exciting but stressful times. It is during these stressful times that our immune systems become weakened and we are more susceptible to allergies, colds and flu. This weakened immune system combined with eating foods that we know are not healthy for us almost always leaves one family member, if not all, getting sick and wondering what happened. Well the clues are always there, as a matter of fact, they are already beginning. The slight cough from allergies, the light headache behind your eyes or forehead, waking more through the night or even sleepless nights. All of these little stressors begin to add up and take their toll on our immune systems. The good news is that if you act now you can make the changes necessary to keep you and your family stronger and healthier through this fall and holiday season. Whether you are already experiencing some of the above symptoms or you are typically healthy and just want to decrease the effects of stress on your body, I can help. We will discuss your lifestyle and create a plan that will fit you and your families needs. I am an Alternative Healthcare physician specializing in helping people who have been told that there is “no hope” for them and they must “live with their pain”. I developed the Trybus Transformation Technique with its unique approach of treating the individual as a whole. I look at the emotional, physical, intellectual and chemical sides of their body. The Breast HealthCare Center at Missouri Baptist has Rolled out the Red Carpet Soothing chamomile tea. Soft cotton robes. Complimentary valet parking. It's everything you'd want and never expect from a mammogram appointment, which is just what we had in mind. “Starting your screening mammograms at age 40 to monitor your breast health is one of the most important decisions you can make as a woman,” said Geoffrey Hamill, MD, PhD, Section Chief Mammography and Breast Imaging at the Breast HealthCare Center at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. “Having a mammogram is one of the best ways to find breast cancer early, and here, we understand having a mammogram can cause feelings of concern for any woman, whether it’s her first mammogram or her fifth mammogram.” “The Breast HealthCare Center recently celebrated a complete renovation, focusing on a welcoming patient experience to make it easier for women to commit to their health with annual screenings,” said Laura Ferree, sales and marketing coordinator for the Breast HealthCare Center at Missouri Baptist. “Even upon entering, women are greeted with a comfortable and calming atmosphere, which is just one of the many important features offered at our state-ofthe-art center.” The newly redesigned Breast HealthCare Center combines the best of science with compassionate care for every individual patient. With its advanced facilities and

technologies, the Breast HealthCare Center is still what a breast center should be: a warm and caring place dedicated to providing high-quality care. Missouri Baptist’s Breast HealthCare Center is a designated “Breast Center of Excellence” by both the American College of Radiology and the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. The center is accredited in breast ultrasound, breast MRI, MRI biopsy, digital mammography, stereotactic core biopsy, ultrasound-guided core biopsy, and needle localization. 3D mammography is offered at the 3023 Ballas Road location. This technology may be particularly beneficial for women who have dense breasts. Board-certified radiologists dedicated to mammography examine breast tissue layer by layer, to look for any signs of cancer. With 3D mammography, 15 low-dose images of the breast are taken at different angles in just four seconds, improving visualization of subtle cancers within dense breast tissue. Digestive disorders can be extremely embarrassing and debilitating. Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, bacterial overgrowth, constipation, and colitis are extremely common and can be hard to get under control. Good health begins with the health of your gut. If your gut is damaged or you have an abundance of pathogenic microorganisms it is impossible to be healthy. The gut must be addressed daily in order for one to live a lifestyle that builds health. An anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle are critical for full recovery from digestive conditions. Antiinflammatory foods help to modulate the immune system and give it a more accurate pair of eyes so as to not over-inflame when stimulated. To effectively reduce inflammation it is key to reduce or eliminate processed foods, refined sugars, and common food sensitivities. The diet should consist of juiced or deeply steamed veggies that are easy on the digestive system. Small amounts of clean protein such as wild-caught salmon, organic poultry or grass-fed beef and wild game. Other great anti-inflammatory foods include coconut products, berries, and hypoallergenic pea or brown rice protein with added antioxidant nutritional compounds that boost glutathione levels. Antiinflammatory herbs such as turmeric, ginger, boswellia, cinnamon, rosemary, & oregano among others should be used as much as possible. In addition to nutrition, the nervous system has to be addressed to properly heal most chronic digestive conditions. The nervous system controls digestive function from several different regions. The vagus nerve which courses out of the brain stem innervates all major organs of digestion and functions to stimulate the digestive process. Several studies have demonstrated the power of chiropractic adjustments restoring optimal function in individuals with digestive disturbances. A 2003 study looked at 53 Crohn’s disease patients. Of the 17 patients who received spinal adjustments, 12 showed longterm and stable remission of their symptoms. Nine of the patients experienced an alleviation effect. The authors of the study found that vertebral subluxation is a common and characteristic finding in patients with allergies and Crohn’s disease. If you are suffering with acid reflux, bouts of constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, or crohn’s or celiac disease, Spinal Correction is something to investigate further. Call Dr. Gogliotti’s office today to schedule your consultation. Dr. Dan Gogliotti, DC is the premier chiropractor in St Louis. Decreasing Pain, Increasing Range “To find health should be the object of the doctor. Anyone can find disease.” Andrew Taylor Still, DO, MD Founder of Osteopathy

With so many messages about healthy diets, exercise, medications and supplements, we can easily lose track of what health means and how to achieve it. It’s worthy of pause to reflect on where health originates: from within. Our bodies know how to heal and maintain themselves without conscious effort. We typically take this natural process for granted until we experience discomfort or disease. Diet, exercise, medications and supplements can help restore needed balance, but sometimes these processes can become blocked. Doctors of Osteopathy, or DOs, are fullylicensed physicians traditionally trained to understand the ways that injury or illness in one part of the body can affect the whole person. By balancing all body systems rather than simply concentrating on treating symptoms, this minimizes reliance on medications or the need for surgery. The goal of osteopathic medicine is to correct abnormal structures in the body that cause disease. Whether back pain or a former injury that was treated but never resolved, a hands-on approach is applied with osteopathy to diagnose and treat ailments. By using techniques to move muscles, tissues, and joints, we use gentle tactile pressure, soft tissue stretching and contractions. This restores improved function to the impaired area. These manipulations strengthen the

20

musculoskeletal framework and positively affect the body’s nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems. At Osteopathic Horizons, we take time to thoroughly listen to patient’s medical issues and then initiate individualized treatment plans to improve a patient’s ability to function in everyday activities. By decreasing one’s pain and increasing range of mobility, we help patients achieve a more balanced bodily system. Christopher Ngo, DO is board certified in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and owner of Osteopathic Horizons located at Stillpointe Wellness Center 2135 Dorothy Dr., Ste. 6, Belleville, Illinois. Yoga

An Ancient Practice Still Working After 3,010 Years by Kelly Hogan Ashtanga yoga is an ancient system of yoga passed down through generations in an unbroken lineage from teacher to student. The first texts of the Ashtanga vinyasa yoga system date to 1000 BC, in which the breath count for the sun salutation remains identical to the count used in Ashtanga classes today. Americans first learned of the practice when guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois began giving Ashtanga demonstrations in southern India in the 1970's. The practice slowly made its way to the US, and Ashtanga has been the inspiration for many styles of vinyasa since its first introduction. Ashtanga literally means “eight limbs,” which refers to the practical guidelines the practice lays out to help the student calm and steady the mind, ultimately guiding the student toward inner peace. The physical asana practice is only one of these eight limbs, yet it is the most tangible tool for the beginner. The Ashtanga practice helps yoga practitioners still the mind by focusing on three

points of attention: the posture (asana), the breath, and a gazing point for the eyes. When the mind is focused on these three points of attention, a rich and deep inner awareness becomes possible. Ashtanga yoga utilizes the vinyasa method - for every movement, there is an inhalation or an exhalation. The sequencing of the postures provides a deeply purifying and transformational experience for the practitioner. Where there is weakness, the student gains strength, and where there is too much rigidity, the student softens. When the physical movements combine with the prescribed breathing, an inner heat is created. This inner heat is often referred to as “the fire of purification.” This metaphorical heat can be likened to burning away old habits and negative thought patterns, clearing space for healthier habits and a clearer mind. Ashtanga yoga will take the devoted student as far as he or she is willing to go. This practice is known for making the impossible

possible. One of the results of steady practice is a state of renewed health. This healing in the body brings Ashtanga practitioners a palpable physical vibrancy. Ashtanga yoga is an invitation to stillness in our fast-paced world. It is a time-tested method that clarifies the chaos of everyday life through each inhalation and exhalation. Kelly Hogan, RN, BSN, RYT teaches Ashtanga yoga one-on-one in private yoga sessions. She also offers two public Ashtanga classes each week. Kelly received her teaching certification under the guidance of Ashtanga yoga teacher Kino MacGregor at the Miami Life Center. Kelly holds a BA in Exercise and Sport Science and BS in Nursing. Kelly continues to be absolutely amazed by the power and limitlessness of this practice. Learn more at yogabykelly.com.

Foundation Fundamentals by Roxanne Krummacher It’s always a good idea to check to see how stable the foundation of your yoga practice is. If you have ever seen the process of a new house being built, it’s certainly not very glamourous at first. The foundation has to be set strongly, walls have to be built, and it has to be in structural alignment before all the fancy bells and whistles become the focus. We know, clearly, that the exciting bells and whistles aren’t the first things we should have our attention on with a new home. No-one would want to live in a house that was rushed to be built. We understand that taking time on the foundation isn’t for nothing. But when we come to our yoga mat, or to other areas of our life, we can forget this same principle. So many yogis have recurring pain or injuries that are foundational. A recurring hamstring injury could be healed with proper alignment in a forward fold, a pesky knee problem that could be solved by spending time on the foundational work of warrior 1 and 2, or a wrist pain that could be cleared up by spending time on the foundation of our hands. Yes, we love flying in our arm balances but we need to check our foundation from time to time. Especially when we appear to have cracks in the rest of our body so to speak. In our life “off of the mat”, this mindset can rear its head the new job or relationship that we want and/or expect to know everything about and feel right at home in immediately. We can forget easily that these things take time and that when we put the time in to build a strong foundation, the heights to which they can grow are limitless. We would love to have you visit one of our fundamentals classes at Practicing Yoga. Our fundamentals classes are not just for newbies. They are a chance for even the most experienced yogis to learn, or relearn, something fundamental that can be key to a safer and more rewarding advanced practice. Our Fundamentals classes will allow you an opportunity to slow it down so you can listen to yourself more carefully, breathe more fully, and remember what a quiet gift yoga can be. After all, yoga is not about touching your toes, it’s about what you learn on the way down. Practicing Yoga, 5755 Chippewa St., St. Louis, MO 314-399-0491

A Google search for “health” quickly provides over 3 trillion results, and over 200 million news articles. But for all of that, we very rarely see health meaningfully defined or measured. Fortunately, CrossFit has addressed this through the insightful observation that nearly every measurable aspect of human health – blood pressure, bone density, body fat, triglycerides, cholesterol, muscle mass , etc., can be placed on continuum from sickness, to wellness, to fitness. “Our assumption is that if everything we can measure about health will conform to this continuum then it seems that sickness, wellness, and fitness are different measures of a single quality: HEALTH”1 This is to describe fitness as super-health/wellness. The closer to fitness one becomes, the healthier they are. With this in mind, it becomes obvious that fitness is imperative for optimum health. And by happy chance, CrossFit also provides us with three excellent definitions of fitness. The first is by identifying the 10 General Physical Skills: strength, stamina, cardio-respiratory endurance, speed, power, flexibility, balance, agility, coordination, and accuracy. The more a fitness regimen develops these ten skills, the better it is at developing well-rounded fitness. A fitness program that fails to develop all of these skills is incomplete. The second definition of fitness is a person’s capacity to perform well at any given task that comes their way. A fitness program that prepares one to perform well across an infinite variety of tasks that are unknown and unknowable develops true fitness. A program that focuses on strength, cardio, flexibility, etc. at the expense of other skills will not develop true fitness.

Ashiatsu Bodywork & Energywork Free DoTerra Essential Oil Classes Aromatouch

The third definition of fitness involves the three different energy pathways that provide the energy for all human action: phosphogen, glycolytic, and oxidative. It is not necessary to delve into the specifics of each. It is enough to understand that they are used for short to long term energy requirements. A complete fitness program develops all three energy pathways as equally as possible. By providing a fitness protocol that meets all of these definitions, and by providing sound nutritional advice, CrossFit has shown us the way not just to fitness, but to true physical health.

~ Care for the Total Woman ~

A Transformative Wellness & Healing Spa Debuts

by Marilyn Jones

“Let the waters settle and you will see the moon and the stars mirrored in your own being.” ~Rumi Women’s Health Specialists (WHS) now serve the needs of their female patients through transformative spa services in addition to their OB/GYN medical practice and hormone replacement therapies. They also guide women in putting themselves first. As women, we fill many caregiving roles: daughter, wife, and mother, for example. Placing our care at the bottom of a priority list is a common, unfortunate outcome of caring for others. When we also juggle career demands, our health and self-care can be quietly compromised. The WHS staff often see signs of self-neglect. Dr. Teresa Knight, OB/GYN, founder, and CEO says, “Women need more than simple beauty care routines. We need doctors and healthcare providers to recommend more healing services. We need estheticians and massage therapists who can recognize skin changes that may suggest a need for testing for conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, and other issues. We need health coaches who can act as accountability partners in achieving a healthy weight, eating well and being active.” 26

~ WHS Wellness & Healing Spa by the Numbers ~ 14,000 square feet 6 treatment rooms 4 therapy route options for bio-identical hormones 3 exclusive skincare lines 3 certified health coaches 3 providers of chiropractic, massage and acupuncture 2 licensed estheticians 2 IV suites

“Wellness is the ability to manage and enjoy one’s life — especially when disease is present.” ~Dr. Teresa Knight Though beauty routines such as new hairstyles or mani-pedis can make us feel good today, a deeper, long-term view of self-care can be transformative. Dr. Knight says, “Our new spa environment fills the space between a medi-spa and a pampering spa offering.” It’s an approach to caring for the total woman — not just to look good, but to help women truly feel good within. The foundational concept of this new spa is achieving peak wellness. We’ve all been surprised by women who look polished, but are battling disease or major life transitions. “Our health can be compromised by illnesses and disease that are beyond our control. We can, however, take total control of our wellness. We can optimize our health through a combination of traditional medicine and pampering,” says Dr. Knight. Tradition + Wisdom The broad range of the spa services combines traditional medicine with what Dr. Knight describes as ancient healing wisdom designed to empower women to make their transformation uniquely theirs. “Medications can often mask symptoms of something greater as conditions develop in our bodies,” says Dr. Knight. “Tuning-in to our body’s needs is crucial.” Hormone replacement therapy is a cornerstone spa service and specialty focus area for Dr. Knight. “It’s an often misunderstood component of vitality for women as they age. Our complex body systems don’t respond well to extremes of anything. We show women how they can flourish using bio-identical hormones in the peri-menopausal years and beyond.” The spa services are available to everyone, not just WHS patients. While the 14,000 square foot spa is an expansion of their Creve Coeur OB/GYN office, a dual relationship with the spa and medical office is not required for client service. Additional spa services include health coaching, skin care services, acupuncture, chiropractic care and massage therapy. Managing Director Brandi O’Kelley notes, “We’ve carefully selected the top providers in each category.” Dr. Knight emphasizes the WHS core mission, saying, “We help women maximize and preserve their wellness in whatever life stage they are in. Being both healthy and well are too often exclusively separate states, but they needn’t be.” Women’s Health Specialists Wellness & Healing Spa on Ballas Rd. in Creve Coeur. Life on Default

Contact us for a free introductory consultation.

by The Coaches of Pyramid Health Coaching We all have a ‘default; mode— a way of being on auto-pilot that kicks-in when we aren't consciously paying attention. Considering the hectic pace of our lives, family and work pressures, it’s easy to put things on autopilot to allow for managing daily crises.

The good news is we can reprogram ourselves by resetting the neuropathways that create habits. Reprogramming is possible by doing things repeatedly and intentionally until the new path becomes routine.

Our default mode of eating may involve skipping meals, downing a bag of chips when we're stressed, or drinking excessively while indulging in a platter of nachos or decadent cheesecake.

"We either live by intention or exist by default."

Or even simpler: when we aren't paying attention to our health, we neglect being physically active, eating nutritiously, or making an effort to find work/life balance and reduce stress. Improving lifestyle behaviors requires mindfulness, choice, awareness, and intention. We make time for things that are important to us. ‘Finding time’ to exercise or enjoy a regular yoga practice, for example, can become an exception if we don’t make it a priority. When we are trying to change our default setting to another way of being, it takes time and a concentrated effort. Accountability is an important component as well.

~ Kristin Armstrong, professional road bike racer and two-time Olympic gold medalist

We have all heard the phrase “take care of yourself ”. And yet, as women we tend to put our family and friends first. Initially, it appears we are kind, giving souls. Which we are, yet there is something missing. What is missing? YOU! I remember the very moment in which this statement took meaning. I was a wife, mother of two young girls and working on my master’s program. Oh yes and working outside the home. What many of us do. I decided to take a parenting class so that I could be better at raising children. Something was very odd, the first thing that we talked about was ourselves. How do we create balance in our life? What a foreign concept. How could I be a better parent if I took better care of myself. My ego chimed in and said I know how to take care of myself, I’m 33 years old. Ha, under some self -examination I realized how backwards and up -side down thing were in my life. So started the journey. I gave a presentation to over 250 women at a conference and I gave a simple request, write down all the things you are responsible for and the moans and groans filled the room. I then said they only had two minutes, which gave the some relief. When asked what was first on their list, you can only imagine what showed up. Job, kids, laundry, bills, family, husband, exercise, etc.

40

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Fall 2015

When asked by a show of hands who listed themselves, 2 people out of 250 put themselves on the list and they were listed last. I am grateful that this has changed over the years a bit. I realized it wasn’t just me who felt this way. What a relief. We as women now consider our health as an important part of who we are. I can honestly say that it took me awhile to figure this out and to have the courage to put myself at the top of the list. The good news is that when you put yourself first you will have so much more to give and you will know when to say “no” to things and people that do not support your well- being. Ask yourself, what percent do you give to your well-being? Self- awareness sparks change. Since 2011, MJ has served as a national spokesperson for Anheuser-Busch “Family Talk”, a drinking prevention initiative that focuses on family first. MJ is well known for her parenting classes and her family coaching business. All About Kids2 offers family coaching for all families. She is unique in that she offers “house calls” and phone consultations.

Feeling Out of Control? Get off the Merry-Go-Round by Beth Boesel-Thater

Unleashing the Power Within

Unlock Your Souls Purpose Do you feel like you are the best kept secret and you have so much to offer but you are struggling to get a handle on your life and circumstances? You want to operate in your fullest capacity leading a joy-filled life but you constantly feel burdened with anxiety, fear, selfdoubt and your mind keeps playing the same old recordings over and over again! It is time to get off the merry go round. From the time we were babies to our adulthood, we have been imprinted with belief systems, societies programing, hurts, pains, emotional trauma, and let’s face it life’s challenges. These experiences have taken a toll on our emotional, physical, and spiritual states. If unhandled, we spend most of our life trying to figure out why we feel despondent, stressed, and triggered. We are vibrational beings and we take on energetic static from others through our cellular bodies. When our bodies take on these lower emotions, we can become ill on many levels. Most people are not consciously aware of what these blocks are as they are hidden in our sub-consciousness. This can cause pain in the body and our emotional state. It’s time to take back your life. When we are able to release these unwanted emotions, patterns, fear based thoughts, trauma etc., we are then allowing more light to come in and we are able to reside in our pure state of being. Our lives become a beautiful canvas and we are in charge! We feel selfempowered, freedom, and a sense of liberation. There is no holding us back because we have come into alignment with our Souls Purpose. This is how I help Clients. I am one of the top leading experts in the St. Louis area for helping people release that which is no longer serving them purpose. One of my clients described her experience as “Heaven rushing in”. I am certified in several healing modalities and I have traveled extensively to Peru and Spain to work alongside of powerful Shamans from the Central and Northern Andes bringing back the wisdom of this sacred path. It brings me great joy to witness my clients unleashing old patterns and behaviors and literally expanding into the fullness of the light that they are. I am offering a complimentary ½ hour phone call. Simply go to www.unlockyoursoulspurpose.com and fill out the form on my home page. I invite you to check out my website for further information. The Autumn of Life

by Marilyn Eagen Autumn is a very powerful season for us as it represents the last season of the year where everything that was part of this year comes together to be processed. It is time to be harvested and remembered for its value, and let go of the rest.

lives. Of course, there are times that we have pains. However, the sooner we can let it go, the better we can feel. Pretending it is not there does not serve us. Just acknowledge the pain and let it go. That allows more space inside of us for our true light.

As this season is definitely upon us, I want to remind you of the symbolic nature of this season for us in this time and space. As most of you know, we are in another period of vibrant shifting and growing and coming to our wholeness. Not just from this year, but for our entire time of beingness.

Here is a simple, easy exercise you can do to easily let go of energy that does not serve you, and you do not have to identify the issue, just notice that it feels heavy in your body.

These years, maybe even this entire lifetime represents the culmination of all that we are here to be, know and remember, the autumn of our lifetime. As we each are going through time periods of change and maybe some uncomfortableness in our lives, I just want you to know that you are not broken. There is no need to be “fixed”, just remember who you really are and who you were always meant to be. These times are just bringing to the surface the memories and the “realness” of you and your life. Asking you to BE fully YOU! So, this is “the autumn of the autumn”. Take this time to be with yourself and harvest the beauty that you see. The rest of what comes up that doesn’t feel good or leaves a disturbance in you is a sign to let it go. When discomfort appears in your body in any form, it is a message to make a change to let it go and allow in more light. We are meant to feel good and experience joy in our

Find somewhere outside to sit and feel the heavier energy move into your first chakra (or the very bottom of your spine). Ask that energy to move down into the earth, let it go to mother earth as she is there to transmute that energy and wants to do that for us. At the same time, allow more light energy to come into your crown chakra at the top of your head. Continue to breathe through this exercise for a few minutes until you feel “clean” or “light” or more fully you. Thank Mother Earth for assisting you! You came here to be light, let yourself be free to BE LIGHT! Marilyn Eagen is a Certified Energy Medicine Practitioner and QSCA Certified Life Coach. She is also trained in many other modalities. Tooth Replacement Simplified The American College of Prosthodontists reports 178 million people in the U.S. are missing at least one tooth. That equates to about one in two Americans facing a problem whose answer is a bit more complex today due to advances in dentistry. The best tooth replacement option is situation dependent. Factors to consider include: the number of teeth missing, length of time missing, amount of lost bone volume, dental and overall health conditions and cost considerations. A complete assessment determines if a dental implant or a non-implant system will work best. With some simple diagnostics, including a 3D CT Scan, an exam and consultation, Artistic Dentistry patients can review a full range of tooth replacement options customized to their individual situation. They’re able to get every question answered until they feel informed enough to make their own choice. Regardless of the replacement option selected, all of the necessary procedures and technology are available at Artistic Dentistry. This becomes especially convenient when a dental implant system is preferred. All-inclusive implant services simplify the process for Artistic Dentistry patients. Tooth extraction, implant placement and crown procedures are performed in one office. Where teeth have been missing for some time, a bone graft restores lost bone. A sinus lift procedure can be performed where necessary. In some instances, an implant can be placed immediately after a tooth is extracted. The first step to replacing lost teeth is discovering the options available based on the individual’s situation. Artistic Dentistry makes this first step uncomplicated and affordable. Dr. Peter J. Pagano, DDS has been in practice for over thirty years and placing implants since 1999. Artistic Dentistry at 12334 Olive Blvd in Creve Coeur. Strengthen Your Response - Ability by Rebecca Wiederkehr, LCSW Since most health issues are seeded with stress it seems important to look from where some of this stress comes. Our old stressors show up over and over again dressed up in another way. One way to explain this phenomenon that everyone encounters is to understand “our assumptive world.” Introduced by Hadley Cantril in the 50’s and elaborated upon by the late Jerome D. Frank, in simple form it suggests that each of us creates our own “assumptive world” and it becomes our reality. It can run our lives if we don’t bring it to our conscious awareness. As children, at 2, 3, 4, 5 years, we were constantly observing our world and unconsciously assigning meaning to what was happening around us. From this gathered information we made early decisions about how we were going to live our life and stored them in our invisible “survival kit”. An example of this is as small children we saw and experienced our parents constantly working, staying busy. It seemed they had no time for us, nor did they say such things as “I love you”, “You are important to me”, “I am so glad you are my son/daughter.” We could not see that our parents were busy supporting us, giving us a good life, making sure we were well cared for and that was 46

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Fall 2015

their way of saying “I love you so much”, “you are important to me”. We interpreted this as we were unlovable and not important. Or, we could have had parents who gave us attention and love just for doing well. We decided the only way to get love was to perform, have high expectations of ourselves. Often we came out of this thinking we are not enough, one of the biggest lies we’ve bought into in our lives. We each have our set of early decisions we made to make sense of our world. These underlying messages settled deep into our psyche. As adults we are still drawing from them as we go about our day assuming we know why someone is acting a certain way, or looking at us a certain way. Stories automatically build up inside us as we reinforce our early decisions about our value and self worth. We are interacting with people who are caught in the same cycles, often bumping into each other’s “stuff ”. In all of this we are creating thoughts that automatically spawn our emotions, our angry, sad, or happy feelings, which cause more assumed thoughts that spawn more automatic emotions... This can create serious stress. As adults we have to dig deep inside to see what facets of our early decisions are still controlling us and rearing up here

and there in order for us to re-write those scripts for healthier outcomes. In order to heal we must learn to stop “assuming the meaning” of what is going on around us in our interactions with others. Just as we pull from our “survival kit” in times of stress, so do others. It is important to remember their words and actions are about them, not us. This keeps us from taking it personally and gives us time to reassess the situation so we can respond instead of react, honing our response-ability. And always, believe we are enough. It’s the greatest health tonic. Tools: -Relax and meditate. Listen to your intuition/inner wisdom for solutions to life’s situations. -Consciously refocus on rewriting those unhealthy scripts to positive ones. These tools help us build new healthy brain pathways, replacing the negative ones. Each moment offers us a choice. Live consciously, awake and aware. Let’s strengthen our response-ability. Rebecca Wiederkehr, LCSW assists people in releasing stuck trauma as well as supporting personal and spiritual growth within relationships with self and others. Y&S Interview

Bikram Yoga with Jeff Busbee As someone with very little yoga experience, walking into Bikram Yoga in Chesterfield for the first time was nerve-racking. I was unsure of what to expect and feared that I wouldn’t be able to do the moves. However, turns out I had nothing to be nervous about after all. When I walked inside, I was greeted with a smile by owner and teacher, Jeff Busbee, who gave me an overview of the class and answered my questions. Once class was complete, Jeff officially welcomed me to Bikram yoga, and the entire class clapped—it was an incredible feeling. I relaxed on the mat to reflect on the past 90 minutes, sweatier than ever, and was content. After a difficult day at work, it was just what I needed to release my stress.

by Maggie Hallam

Tell us about yourself, Jeff. I grew up in St. Louis, joined the military at 25 years old as an airplane mechanic, and then worked here in Chesterfield on corporate jets for 18 years. I got to be 40 years old, and I was a wreck. I was way overweight, I drank a lot, and I kept getting stiffer and stiffer after being a mechanic for all those years. Eventually I had no mobility in my neck and had really bad knees and hips. I saw a 10-second spot on TV on Bikram yoga, and I came up here to this studio and sat in the parking lot probably five different times before I finally got the nerve to take a class. I knew right then and there that this was what I needed. I got all my mobility back, and I’ve never had a neck problem since. About four years into my practice, I became a teacher, and in February I quit my job of 18 years and bought this studio, and I do this fulltime now. Why do you prefer yoga over other types of exercise? I used to be into running and lifting weights,

50

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Fall 2015

Afterward, I sat down with Jeff to learn all about him, his studio and his passion for Bikram yoga.

but what those exercises do is shorten your muscles and make them harder. I couldn’t run anymore because of my knees and hips, and I found that lifting weights just made me more hungry, and I kept getting bigger and bigger. I was strong, but I had no mobility. Yoga works your whole body, and it’s something you can do every day, whereas you don’t want to run or lift weights every day. And I believe in it. I believe in it so much that I quit my career for it. I believe there’s much more to it mentally and physically than doing a workout of circuit training or a run or swim. I’ve lost 60 pounds since starting yoga and I feel 100 times better. More specifically, why Bikram yoga over other types of yoga? I like the heat, the longer classes, and that you know what to expect and can build on your practice. All Bikram classes are 26 postures and two breathing exercises, and you do everything two times. Your first set is seeing where your body is at today, and in the second set you work on your body today, digging a little deeper.

What is your advice to new students? Hydration. Hydration is the key to life, and definitely the key for a Bikram yoga class. What is your advice to yogis interested in becoming a teacher? Anybody at any level of fitness can do it, and you don’t have to be good at yoga to be a teacher; you just have to have the discipline to take care of yourself in the class. The teacher training is a 9-week program in a different state or country, and you do two different classes a day—one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Sometimes the classes can be three hours long, so you have to want to be able to do it. It’s a rewarding job, and it’s worth it. Close to 100 people a day come through here, and I watch them day after day as they get better. What is your favorite pose? Pada-Hastasana, because I can open up my whole back. I do it 20 times a day.
