What’s Your Yoga? The question really asks how do we balance health, prosperity, family and friends? Or, more to the point, how do we live a balanced, sustainable and healthy lifestyle? Yoga & Spa Magazine is here to inspire and assist you in your search for the answers to these questions. Our mission is to assist you in moving from a life of survival to one of thriving and contributing to your life’s authentic purpose in this world. Through the practices of yoga and spa we are certain this can be attained. The term “yoga” comes from a Sanskrit word which means “union.” Traditionally, yoga is a method connecting the individual self with the Divine, Universal Spirit, God, Higher Consciousness or whatever word you choose to describe that all-encompassing force that guides our lives. Physical and mental exercises are designed to help achieve this goal of communion. On the physical level, yoga postures, called asanas, are designed to tone, strengthen, and align the body. These postures are performed to make the spine supple and to promote blood flow to all the organs, glands and tissues which, in turn, keep all the bodily systems healthy. I recall a yoga teacher of mine once saying that if I continue to do yoga, I won’t need botox! On the mental level, yoga uses breathing techniques (pranayama) and meditation (dyana) to quiet, clarify, and discipline the mind. However, experts are quick to point out that yoga is not a religion, but a way of living with health and peace of mind as its aim. “Spa” is an acronym for the Latin phrase, “salus per aquae,” or “healing through water.” Others believe the origin of the word “spa” comes from the Belgian town of Spa, known since Roman times for its baths. You can think of a spa as a sanctuary for rejuvenation. Yoga and spa are interwoven in a balanced healthy lifestyle. Whenever we take a time-out and breathe, there is an opportunity for healing and inspiration. As wedding season approaches, we are taking this opportunity to feature bachelorette spa parties. So, gather up your wedding party and entourage to enjoy massage, hair styling and a day of bliss! I actually had a “bachelorette sweat lodge.” Now, that was a spa day! Steaming, cleansing and praying with my best girlfriends prepared me to take the plunge! We would love to hear your version of the perfect spa day. What is your yoga? What gets you re-centered and re-connected with your spirit? Taking a yoga class? Walking in nature? Your weekly Pilates class? Your Sunday Church service? What are you doing to care for your body, mind and spirit? Continue to read Yoga & Spa Magazine for inspiration and wisdom. We invite you to achieve a balanced, healthy lifestyle. It is possible. Namaste,

Pilates 101 “We love Pilates and Yoga because they require you to focus on your body and your breath.” – Karen Prechtl and Suzanne Ford owners of St. Louis Pilates and Yoga Centers Why Pilates? Pilates gently strengthens your core and realigns your shoulders, hips and pelvis for a longer, leaner, body. Men love it because it increases rotation and functional movement, and strengthens back muscles. Women like feeling tall, fit, and poised from strengthening muscles in their core, pelvic floor, and mid-back, creating a regal posture, which exudes self-confidence.
How often should I do Pilates to see a change? Realistically, the best results occur with a three-times-per-week program. Pilates offers great cross-training benefits, which complement any workout or sport. Use a variety of equipment and mat classes to intensify your abdominal workout and aerobic activity to gain faster results. How is this different from weight training? Here’s a reason why Hollywood stars do Pilates: Your efforts go into lengthening your body, rather than contracting it. It won’t stress your joints or increase bulk like weight training can. You’ll look longer and leaner, and feel stronger and refreshed!
Will it benefit any age group? Yes! Pilates is an incredible, overall strength and flexibility builder. Many athletes and dancers have discovered the benefits of Pilates. Several of the Olympians interviewed in Vancouver at the 2010 games described Pilates exercises as part of their training regime. Pilates is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. It can be used to assist in rehabilitating injuries, to keep seniors active and vibrant for tennis, golf, and simply getting out of a chair unassisted. It is great for teens to promote healthy movement habits, along with developing good posture that will last a lifetime.
Will I lose weight? Many people do experience weight loss simply from including Pilates into their workout. The internal changes that come from Pilates and Yoga help you make better health choices. The Pilates and Yoga Center of St. Louis offers a great weight loss program called “Thinnerpeace”, which address this issue. Stop dieting, lose weight, and feed your spirit instead of your appetite.
Is it aerobic? Using Jumpboards and moving through exercises quickly can stimulate an elevated heart rate during the workout. Make sure you tell your teacher that aerobic movement is your emphasis.
Go with a pro. You get what you pay for. Personal Pilates Instructors take time to map out a program that is just right for your body. Many studios offer fitness assessments to assist you in creating a program that is as individual as you are.

Spring Cleaning for Your Body
by Maya F. Bradstreet
of foods that are constituted as a ‘toxin’ are listed below in the ‘Action Plan’.) In the end, we experience profound results. Our digestion and metabolism are improved. We also experience a renewed energy, a clearer mind, and a brighter outlook. Our body is revitalized, from head to toe! However a detox DIET is a misnomer as it should NOT be looked as a way to lose weight. While usually one can expect to lose a few pounds, it likely is water-weight, and it definitely should not be the main purpose of one’s decision to pursue the detox. Not to mention, it can be dangerous to jump into cleansing without having adequately prepared the body for the removal of toxins. Some expected reactions are withdrawal symptoms such as headaches and irritability. You ought to get the go-ahead from your physician, particularly if have certain medical conditions. Preferably, you aren’t undergoing any major stresses in your life either. That way you can focus on yourself, and give yourself the gift of a purified body, mind and spirit! ACTION PLAN: 5 WAYS TO JUMP START YOUR OWN DETOX PROGRAM Based on experience and research, I have developed my own foods-based plan that is more moderate than some of the other cleanses out there, but just as effective. Detoxing doesn’t have to be complicated…
Springtime inevitably evokes the notion of Spring Cleaning – the two go hand in hand. Longer, sunnier days signify the end of being cooped up indoors, and the beginning of a lighter, fresher, more energetic way of being. We open up the windows, dust the pillows, and tackle those hard-to-reach places in our homes that inevitably amassed dust, grime and clutter. We clean out cupboards and closets otherwise neglected. We scrub the walls and steam-vacuum the rugs. We even take the time to examine the “stuff” we’ve collected, donating anything extraneous. While it can be a dreaded endeavor, to make our homes spic and span, once commenced (and completed!), it is a rather rewarding experience. We feel fulfilled, refreshed, invigorated, and ready to move forward with our lives. Naturally then, it’s appropriate to consider spring-cleaning our most basic ‘home’: our BODY. We may have passed the winter, including the stressful holidays, eating heavier foods. Perhaps we’re guilty of overindulging in sweets, cocktails or caffeine. We may even have a few extra pounds or inches we’d like to rid from our bodies. Now is the most suitable time to detoxify from all the excess of the previous season. It is the perfect opportunity to give our liver a break from toxic overload, to scrub our digestive system clean and to regenerate our cells. Also known as ‘cleanses’ or ‘fasts’, detox programs are short-term regimes that actually have a long-standing historical and religious tradition. (Think, Lent, Ramadan, Yom Kippur). Usually associated with cleansing the ‘soul’ as much as the ‘body’, refraining from food allows the body and mind to be purified. Lately ‘detox diets’ have been all the rave. Celebrities and physicians have been championing particular programs and products. You may have read about them in a popular magazine, seen a commercial, or walked by a detox aide at the supermarket. There are a plethora of detoxes out there to choose from, ranging from the extreme to the more moderate. Choices include: water fasting, juicing, taking supplements, eating raw foods, and just plain eating ‘cleaner’. The premise is the same: by removing toxins from our diet, we allow our cells, tissues and organs to rest from the build-up of those pollutants. Because our body isn’t working hard to digest complicated or harmful substances, it can focus instead on detoxification. (Examples

1) Focus on adding or increasing the following (variety is good): • Raw fruits and juices (Citrus is particularly effective at cleaning out our liver) • Raw vegetables and juices, particularly dark leafy, bitter greens – their high chlorophyll content oxygenates our blood. • Whole, unrefined, non-glutinous grains (e.g. quinoa, millet, preferably soaked & sprouted) • Seeds (e.g. sunflower, sesame, pumpkin, preferable soaked and sprouted) • Good quality probiotic 2) Limit, Reduce or completely avoid the following: • Artificial Ingredients (e.g. sweeteners, additives and preservatives) • Refined Sugar (e.g. white sugar, high fructose corn syrup) • Refined Carbohydrates in general • Fried Foods • Caffeine (Soda, coffee and tea) • Alcohol • Animal Protein, including dairy • Allergenic foods (e.g. soy, corn, peanuts) 3) Hydrate!!! It is extremely important to drink fluids. Choices are: • High-quality filtered water • Electrolyte or Spring water • Herbal teas • Soups
4) Get your rest – Quiet time (and stress reduction in general) is the best way to encourage our body to heal: • Sleep (try to get to bed before 10pm, and aim for 8 hours a night if you can) • Get a massage (or two) • Practice yoga • Meditate • Spend time outdoors, the fresh air and sunshine (Vitamin D) will do your body good!

Protein: The Basis of Life By Dr. Russell T. Imboden, DO
Metabolism is essentially a term used to describe all the physical and chemical processes in the body required to build, maintain and repair tissue and to produce energy. A declining metabolic rate plays a major part in weight gain as we age. A big factor in decreased metabolism is the loss of muscle. Women, for example, can drop 10 pounds of muscle between the ages of 35 and 50 just from a decrease in physical activity. Muscle burns calories in the body, which is why it is better to build muscle than to just focus on losing fat or inches. If each pound of muscle burns 3550 calories daily, then a loss of 10 pounds means a women will no longer burn that 350500 calories each day. If an adjustment is not made in nutritional intake, she will gain weight. Muscle is the engine that drives all metabolisms. The more muscle one has, the more fat one burns. The less muscle one has, the more fat one stores. Starting at about age 45, the average adult will see a decrease of about 10% in their muscle mass every ten years. This 10% loss equates to approximately one half pound of muscle each year; muscle that is replaced with fat. Metabolism is an essential ongoing process in all living organisms. When metabolism stops, life also stops. Our metabolism is greatly affected by the foods we choose to eat. When you slow your metabolism significantly, by not giving the body the correct amount of appropriate food to burn for energy or to use for tissue renewal and maintenance, you cause the body to start shutting down. This slowing down contributes to the process of aging in your internal organs and actually ages you first from the inside, sometimes before any signs of aging are visible externally. We are all aware of how important it is to maintain physical activity and to do strength training to maintain muscle mass, but often, understanding how to incorporate protein in our diets is more complicated because all proteins are not created equally. Protein, the main building block in the body, is the primary compo-

nent of most cells, and is essential to human life. Every cell in the body has it, including skin, hair, bones, muscle and organ tissue. It is found in the bloodstream, in hormones, and in enzymes. During digestion, protein is metabolized into amino acids. The body uses amino acids for energy as well as to produce enzymes and other essential proteins. The body synthesizes some amino acids, but it cannot produce the “essential” amino acids. These essential amino acids must be consumed in the daily diet and are found in the Body Solution Systems meal replacement protein formula we call “PXR”. PXR (an acronym for proteins, xanthones, and resveratrol) has been specifically formulated to provide delicious, low calorie, low fat, high soy protein based meals for optimal nutrition. The meals are fortified with vitamins and minerals and also include the potent anti-oxidants, alpha-mangostin and resveratrol to support optimal health. PXR is made without gluten and is lactose free. It is also low glycemic and Kosher. Great care was taken to formulate PXR utilizing no artificial colors, flavors, or artificial sweeteners. The soy protein found in the PXR formula builds muscle cells back which ultimately lead to increased metabolism. Patients will also notice less skin elasticity and an overall firming appearance due to increased muscle mass. Our clinical evaluations indicate a decrease in osteoporosis as bone structure is also strengthened with optimal levels of protein. To learn more about the Body Solution System, visit www.BodySolutionSystems.com or call 636-532-0700 to schedule your consultation with Dr. Imboden. Dr. Imboden has been a family practitioner for over 20 years with an emphasis on metabolic medicine and bariatrics (medical weight loss). When not engaged in speaking engagements across the country, Dr. Imboden treats patients at his new office in Chesterfield, Missouri. Dr. Imboden is slated to be featured on “Insights with Hugh Downs”, a PBS special airing in April.

Spa Shiki’s, Ann Brown by Jennifer Bondurant
Looking at a laundry list of Ann Brown’s life, there’s plenty to admire – okay, envy. The fit blonde directs Spa Shiki, one of the Midwest’s largest and most successful resort spas, located at The Lodge of Four Seasons in Lake Ozark. She was chosen by industry colleagues to represent the entire spa industry as an International Spa Association board member, a three-year position she’s held since November 2008. She’s happily married to Peter Brown of the Koplar-Browns, one of the Lake of the Ozarks’ founding families, who own the Lodge of Four Seasons lakeside resort and whose ties to St. Louis includes history with the Chase-Park Plaza, KPLR-TV and more. Ann and Peter are blessed with two children, six-year-old Cameron and fouryear-old Brooke. What’s truly enviable about Brown’s life, however, has nothing to do with appearances or résumé. Brown’s personal and professional lives have evolved together, allowing her to find growth, happiness and passion. For her, “spa” is a way of life that she has come to embrace with mind, body and soul. “I’ve never considered this work,” Brown says. “I am so passionate about what I am doing. I was always saying yes-yes-yes to learn everything and soak up as much as I could.” Education has been a key theme throughout her career, first through her own drive to learn and then as her mission in the industry. As a founding member of the American Spa Therapy Education and Certification Council (ASTECC), Brown has worked to bring standards to an industry that grew more quickly than a regulated infrastructure did. At Spa Shiki, she empowers each therapist and staff member to educate guests on how to improve their quality of life through spa therapy and philosophy, teaching her team to spread a message of wellness and prevention and promoting lifestyle choices that have made a profound difference in her own life. “Doors and windows have opened in my life at the right times,” Brown says. “I’ve been fortunate to make the choices that have led me down this path, and I am grateful for the opportunity to give back.” TURNING POINT In her mid-20s, Brown’s life wasn’t so whole. At the time, she was living in West Palm Beach and part of the area’s masses that she describes as “living outside the body.” She was working on a Master¹s level business class and climbing the corporate ladder. A type-A personality and over-achiever, Brown decided owning a day spa might be in her future. She started working at PGA National Resort & Spa, one
14

of the largest spas in country, and attending school to become a nail technician to forward her plan. When she attended a reflexology class led by Anne Bramham, one of the spa industry’s premier educators and a world-renown aromatherapist, Brown didn’t expect it to be a life-changing experience. She was hesitant and skeptical when Bramham told Brown that, if she wanted to talk, her door was open. Bramham had picked up, through reflexology on her feet, Brown’s chronic urology problems, and she wanted to help. Brown was at the brink of aggressive medical treatment that would require months’ worth of intense medications to treat interstitial cystitis. “I had just been to the urologist and had sat in a waiting room where I was the youngest person under 70,” Brown says. “I was scared – I knew this wasn’t a young person’s problem, but there I was.” Brown took Bramham’s lead and followed a strict treatment plan that involved the use of custom-blended essential oils, herbs and significant diet changes. Within months, the treatment worked and Bramham became Brown’s mentor. “I was disconnected from self,” Brown says about the time before she met Bramham. “I didn’t have a whole lot of support in my life. Even the hands-on, physical touch from spa treatments was an incredible force for me, helping me make important life changes.” Brown immersed herself in learning all she could about spa therapy, pursuing licenses as a massage therapist, esthetician and cosmetologist. “This is a business that has given me a quality of life that I could never have achieved without it,” she says. “That’s worth more than any amount of money.” DRIVING MISSOURI’S TOP SPA In the late 1990s, Brown left Florida and moved to Atlanta to accept a position at a new resort spa. “I knew my niche could be opening resort spas. I wanted to be in charge of space planning and design, develop the treatment menu, spend about a year, and then move on.” With this plan in mind, Brown traveled to Missouri in 2000 to interview for a spa director position at an Asian-themed resort spa in the early stages of construction. Planning on using the interview as practice for future, bigger opportunities, she never intended to take the job. Brown quickly saw Spa Shiki at The Lodge of Four Seasons as an opportunity worth considering. After meeting Susan Koplar-Brown,
the spa’s owner, she knew the position would give her freedom and flexibility to do the job the way she wanted. Koplar-Brown’s over-riding goal was to bring an additional amenity that would attract more corporate guests to the Lake of the Ozarks’ resort. Brown’s goal was to bring true intention and
healthy nutrition and exercise habits and consciously fostering positive rituals and optimism. Brown maintains a diet that focuses on nutrient-rich food that nourishes and supports the body. An avid reader of self-help books, Brown counts Dr. Joel Furhman’s
consistency to the spa and educate guests on the benefits of spa therapy. “I knew we could overlap and have something great,” Brown says. But the decision wasn’t an easy one for Brown. “Many of my peers said it could be the death of my career,” she says about Missouri. The possibility of promoting spa therapy in the Midwest won her over. Brown focused on the task at hand – shaping the then-under construction resort spa into a facility whose treatments and therapy rivals any spa in the country. Since her arrival, Spa Shiki has evolved into a 15-treatment room facility, encompassing more than 15,000 square feet and offering massage therapy, state-ofthe-art hydrotherapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, medical-grade facials and more. Under Brown’s leadership, Spa Shiki has received recognition from NBC’s Today Show, Travel + Leisure: Golf, Midwest Living, Spa Magazine and more as one of the region’s top spas and one of the country’s top spa values.
Eat to Live as one of her favorites. She also follows Dr. Bernard Jensen’s philosophies on how you can dispel disease in the body through eating certain foods. Her diet is high in vegetables and fruits, low in sugar and primarily vegetarian. Three days a week she follows a stretching regimen that includes Pilates and yoga and pursues circuit weight training. Five days a week, she does interval aerobic work for cardiovascular health. “Exercise gives us so many things – stress relief, cardiovascular exchange, bone density and keeps the lymphatic system fit,” she says. Brown also seeks out homeopathic and holistic remedies to share with family and friends, such as performing reflexology on her kids’ feet before bed at least 3 nights each week. Brown points out that rituals are part of spa philosophy. “Spa treatments are rituals that remind our bodies how to rest and heal. At home, rituals also get us where we need to be and are so important to a strong family, whether we are sitting down at the table for dinner, praying together or having a regular nighttime routine.” Giving back to others has also become a hallmark of Brown’s life. Achieving a spot on the ISPA board was the fulfillment of a life goal. “For me, being on the ISPA board means I have an opportunity to help steer
LIVING THE SPA LIFE “For me, spa is about the emotional connection between body and mind. It’s taught me how to process what I am thinking and how it affects my body,” Brown says. Brown’s career and lifestyle are intricately entwined, and she encourages others to make positive changes by developing
the spa industry into the future and contribute my entrepreneurial vision on how to weave the spa industry into people’s lives and impact them with connection, re-connection, de-stressing and prevention.” Being active in her industry on a national level is only part of how Brown wants to initiate change in the world. “After I had kids I started to figure out that serving in professional leagues is fine, but what we do in our own backyards is just as important,” she says. Today, Brown serves on the board of directors for the Lake’s local Citizens Against Domestic Violence and is an active supporter of the area’s Kiwanis chapter and the Hope House, a local food pantry and emergency aid center. Brown considers her first encounter with Bramham in West Palm Beach as a big “what if” moment. “What if I hadn’t followed her advice and pursued spa therapy? I know my life would not be the same,” she says, appreciative of the positive force that spa has been. “If that ‘what if’ moment can happen for somebody else, I want to help it happen.”

“Super Fruits” previously only available in remote parts of the world, now have become available to a global market, including the United States. Consumers have become increasingly aware of the benefits associated with these fruits. What they are discovering is that these fruits may not only benefit their long-term health and improve the way they feel, but also help the fight against aging and improve physical appearance. While a flurry of products containing “super fruits” have recently hit the market, few fulfill on their promises of delivering the whole fruit. And, the key element is the peel, or rind, where most of the nutrients in nature reside. One company, rightfully getting a lot of media attention recently for a line of “category creators”, has the science and personal testimonies from millions of consumers. The company is Utah-based, XanGo and the “super fruit” is the mangosteen. The purple, tangerine-sized, mangosteen, is not to be confused with a mango. It is a prized botanical known as the “queen of fruits” in Southeast Asia and the national fruit of Thailand. The mangosteen is recognized not only for its tremendous taste but also unparalleled health value. Loaded with antioxidants and phyto-nutrients, the mangosteen has gained much attention in

recent years as a nutritious powerhouse food, thanks in large part to the success of the XanGo Juice®, a “functional health beverage.” Now in its 8th year of operation, XanGo, now sells its products in 34 international markets, and more and more consumers are becoming familiar with the benefits of the mangosteen. XanGo® Juice: global market leader XanGo Juice is known by its iconic, custom-shaped glass bottle – which won an award for packaging and responsible bottling in 2008. The juice delivers significant benefits that match its world-class branding. “When I owned Sappington Farmer’s Market, I had many, many customers coming into the store to tell me about their personal experiences with this amazing juice. When someone told me they found relief from their intense migranes, similar to the ones that I suffered with for 19 years, it got my attention. I gave it a try, and in just 60 days I had positive results. Nothing else I tried had helped me, but this did,” said Tessa Greenspan, an independent distributor in St. Louis, MO.
While XanGo’s success has brought many “me-too” competitors onto the stage hoping to replicate its success, none has been able to match the original with its proprietary formula. Many companies claim to use the whole fruit, but in the fine print, their label references extracts, powders or use of merely the pulp, not the whole fruit. That means consumers are not receiving the full benefits of the 39 “xanthones” (phyto-nutrients that are high in antioxidant and other activity and found more in abundance in mangosteen than any other known botanical in nature) and other beneficial natural compounds. Only XanGo offers the full benefits of the whole mangosteen fruit as nature intended – an opinion millions of repeat consumers share. As the category creator from the mangosteen beverage, XanGo takes its responsibility to consumers and advancing wellness seriously. The global market leader with more than 70 percent market share, the company actively advances a credible, independent scientific strategy that validates the innumerable testimonials of its consumers. Major international research institutions are taking notice, too, with recently completed and ongoing human clinical studies reviewing the product’s effects on heart health. For example, a study published last fall 2008 in Nutrition Journal indicates that XanGo Juice lowered levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) in overweight and obese people in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human trial. CRP is a marker used to measure inflammation levels, and a reduction in CRP may indicate a corresponding reduction in the risk of heart disease and diabetes, potentially even stroke, lung disease, skin conditions and arthritis. A FOCUS ON INNOVATION In a market flooded with super fruit hype, XanGo distinguishes itself as a responsible company focused on innovation to advance consumer wellness. A Fusion of Flavors
The atmosphere at Roxane Restaurant in Clayton is funky, eclectic and yet homey and warm due to a great staff. The owners, Natasha Creel and Emily Matthes, orchestrate an eating establishment that can provide intimacy, romance, or just a fun night out with the girls. Light jazz plays, candles flicker, and the “Boom-Boom” awaits lovers wanting privacy while sitting atop pillows in a loft-like room. For groups, there is the Roxane Party Room, complete with fireplace, mosaics, and a privacy wall to seal you and your group of up to 40 off from the restaurant area.
With daily dinner specials and a wide variety of courses to choose from, a frequent diner could eat here for 30 days in a row and never have the same dish twice. What sets the menu apart from all others in the region is the wide variety of international flavors and fusion of color, texture, and vegetables arranged artistically on the plate. There are lots of vegetarian options and choices for vegans such as the veggie gyro or grilled Portobello sandwich. Basically, there is something for everyone. The palate will delight with a variety of Starters such as Prince Edward Island Mussels, Basil Hummus, or Baked Brie (Saganaki Style). You can also enjoy Beef Carpaccio, Carribean-style Jerk Chicken wings, or the Chef’s Antipasto Plate, just to name a few. I dined on the Wasabi and ginger-infused tuna seared with sesame seeds and accompanied with flash-fried spinach, seasoned with sea salt to just die for. On the side was a Risotto flavored with Thai chili sauce and four plump shrimp atop the steaming

mound. The tuna was baby pink inside and seared nicely on the outside. I swore I tasted pistachios but that’s just the incredible flavor of the sesame seeds. The fish sat atop Jicama slivers, much like watercress, with cilantro peeking out as a tease. The spinach was like crunchy green rice paper yet tender and succulent. “Our customers are mesmerized by the flavors and the seasonings. There is often no need to salt or pepper your dish when it arrives,” said Natasha Creel, the owner for the last three years. “We like to provide a global adventure and fusion of flavors,” she said. You can’t go wrong with one of the pizzas such as the Buffalo Chicken, Mediterranean, or Wild Mushroom & Goat Cheese. Where else can you find fresh pizza with hummus, black olives, artichoke hearts, red peppers, red onions and feta? If you are watching your waist, or your budget, you can enjoy half-priced shared plates with a friend Monday through Fridays from 3-6pm. Wash it all down with a $2 beer or house wine for $5, and you will still have money for an incredible dessert. We can’t even go there. It is too sinful to write about.

By incorporating daily stretching he remains pain free and has even reversed the effects of Plantar Fasciitis. Marathoner, Jerry Bruce, also benefits from the combination of Yoga and Pilates. Jerry, who leads a group for Team in Training, Race to cure Lymphoma, says “Yoga is a good way to get back in my center, with a

In the West, Yoga has generally been considered an activity for women. Step into any number of yoga studios these days and you will find more and more men “on the mat” discovering the vitality that is derived from the Eastern art of unifying body, mind, and spirit. Men are astounded by how physically demanding yoga can be, and are equally delighted and surprised by the mental concentration and subsequent clarity and balance it adds to their lives. Although a non-competitive “sport”, some men are challenged when they see a woman holding a challenging pose such as handstand or side arm plank, which for them, can be a struggle. John Darwin, Architect, soccer player and Coach, began his practice,

He quickly discovered that the benefits of concentrated strengthening and flexibility have kept him injury free on and off the soccer field for a year. Deep back bends, challenging arm balances, and spinal twists are performed with grace and mastery. Men are discovering a way to harness a sense of power that lends itself to finding deeper connection and ultimately more freedom in how they shape their lives and their bodies. And hey, there are an abundance of goddesses in class who can match their wit and will in any pose. Are you up for the challenge? MAN-O-Pause by Rev.Larry DeRusha
For many years it was thought that men who ran off to buy a new sports car so they could race down the highway were going through a midlife crisis. Some doctors and researchers today say they may actually be going through male menopause called “andropause.” The understanding of hormones and their impact on emotions is due in part to research into female menopause. Although it may be shocking to some men, male menopause, or andropause, is more widely recognized and accepted by physicians as changes many middle-aged men experience — from energy loss to depression to loss of libido to sexual dysfunction. And some clinicians are recommending that certain men experiencing these symptoms, along with a host of others such as decreased bone density and weight gain, seek hormone replacement therapy and other treatments. “It’s like puberty in reverse,” said Dr. Russell T. Imboden, a Doctor of Osteopathy with Body Solution Sytems in Chesterfield, Missouri in his forthcoming book. Andropause, like puberty, creates all kinds of havoc for men, according to Imboden, “physical, psychological, social, sexual and spiritual.” While producing a documentary on emotional breakthrough (Breakthrough: A Conscious Documentary) here in St. Louis, I began experiencing depression, loss of confidence, weight gain and loss of interest in work. As the new year of 2010 arrived, I was invited to participate on a mountain climbing expedition. My interest peaked and I signed up for a health club and began my training. Within several weeks I began feeling more exhausted and experienced spells of depression. Then I lost interest in almost everything and just wanted to run! One morning I turned on the PBS channel and I was amazed to hear a list of symptoms all of which I had. The show was a special on the

body’s endocrine system. The doctors on the program were talking about what happens in men when their hormones change. I listened intently and the following day called around to find someone who understood andropause. This male menopause (andropause) often relates to a loss of testosterone — the hormone that makes men “men.” Testosterone levels drop in most men starting at age 30, and the testosterone loss continues every year thereafter. By mid 40’s the drop is significant and the impact can be unforgiving. Dr. Jed Diamond, a California psychotherapist and author of Male Menopause and his forthcoming book, Surviving Male Menopause, says of andropause that as many as 25 million American males between ages 40 and 65 are experiencing some degree of male menopause today. “Male andropause can be very insidious,” explains Dr. Imboden. The loss of testosterone, which can happen to men as young as 30, is gradual, with testosterone levels dropping about 1 percent to 1.5 percent annually. Although women begin experiencing some menopausal symptoms 10 years before, most often it is precipitous loss of estrogen that marks the moment. For men this gradual loss of testosterone may take years yet they experience a host of symptoms not unlike changes menopausal women experience, but much less noticeable. Until the day when irritability, fatigue, and depression become marked, you are forced to face the reduced libido and erection problems of andropause, and can no longer explain the symptoms away. I felt like someone pulled the rug out from underneath me when the full impact hit. I am 62 years old and have been in good shape. I suddenly felt overloaded, anxious and depressed. No one knew what was happening, including me.
A Fresh View on an Old Condition The Journal of the American Medical Association wrote about the first study on male andropause in the 1940s. Yet, only very recently has the medical community taken notice of this condition, says Dr. Adrian Dobs, an endocrinologist and associate professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. It is only now becoming clear that many stress factors play an important role in the drop in male hormones and the increase in other types. Diet, lack of exercise, stress at work and emotional issues are just some of the factors. We chase various symptoms or settle on some other specific medical condition, like blood pressure. This is the problem, Diamond maintains. For example, an andropausal male may be diagnosed with Erectile Dysfunction and given one of the many new drugs on the market to treat this symptom. Everyone thinks the man’s problem is handled. However, if that man has other symptoms of male menopause such as depression and antidepressants are prescribed, the problem becomes worse and the drugs can contradict each other. “Typical treatments are not holistic and often overlook our metabolic processes,” Dr. Imboden says. He believes a more holistic approach must address the whole of symptoms with treatments that could include hormone replacement, psychotherapy, herbs, as well as diet and exercise. Pros and Cons Replacement therapy has become the primary treatment for men with declining levels of testosterone or other hormone issues, and these are not without controversy. Men have to be at a certain level of testosterone, according to Dr. Adrian Dobs. She suggests 300 nanograms per deciliter of total testosterone as a minimum.
Testosterone replacement therapy is not without risk. Some specialists say that men considering testosterone replacement therapy—whether by injection, patches, cream, gel or oral form— should get their PSA levels checked even though there is now a controversy as to whether PSA really is a good test of prostate cancer. Testosterone replacement therapy could increase the risk of prostate cancer. Other risks with hormone therapy injections include an increase in liver toxicity, risk of stroke, and ironically, testosterone supplementation can also shut down the production of sperm. I began using a transdermal cream about four weeks ago and have found it helps steady my nerves and increases my sense of well-being. Although the treatment takes about 90 days to show the best results, I found results withins four weeks. For example, the daily depressions were reduced to several episodes a week. I also began a protein supplementation that works on the overall metabolic process causing a drop in weight and noticeable drop in inches around the mid section. My hormone levels were discovered through blood screening, one of the primary testing procedures. There are several controversies in this area as well. First, some non-traditional allopathic healers recommend saliva test, while many doctors will only use blood test. There is no conclusive evidence either way that one test is better than another. This doesn’t help make you an informed patient. Then there is the money aspect. When a full blood panel is asked for the cost can be in the thousands of dollars. But that only establishes a baseline. Soon another blood panel will be required to check progress. There are a whole range of labs and prices for doing the same kind of tests. Some are walk in and no doctor’s orders are required. Other labs are not really labs they are order points and draw blood and ship it to some large plant in another state. The average person has no idea the accuracy of these tests and what certifications are required.

Supplements Natural supplements can increase testosterone production, according to some doctors. Take zinc and vitamins C and E, and L-arginine, and ginkgo biloba (both are vasodilators that increase a man’s libido by increasing blood flow in much the same way as Viagra). Although all males older than age 45 should have testosterone levels checked, hormone replacement therapy is one (a standard to many doctors) treatment for men. Another is a more holistic approach to andropause, including diet and exercise, according to Dr. Imboden. Shoe on the other foot After all these years of putting up with comments from men about menopause, what goes around comes around. Now women are beginning to ask the question of the men in their life; “Are you going through the change?”
