energy flows through our body on a system of meridians. When these meridians are blocked from stress, poor diet, or lack of exercise, we feel stuck and we eventually become sick.

Energy is part of our everyday dialogue. We can feel when we have it…and when it’s stuck and we don’t. Yoga is a fantastic way to release that stuck energy, which is usually the result of the stress we hold in our bodies. Releasing the stress from our body frees the energy to flow. This freeing is probably why there are 60 people in my yoga classes. It really does work! Once the stress is released we feel we can conquer the world — we are energized. We have more energy to work, play and create the life we desire. Life — peace, contentment, joy — begins to flow toward us. Don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself. You can enter to win a free month of unlimited yoga classes at Yoga Rocks the Park. For more information see page 25. The women in the yoga studio locker rooms are conquering the world. I am sure the men are, too. Check out the boot camp babes in the center spread of this magazine on page 26. After their 90 minute morning boot camp I have seen them come in to hot yoga for a 90 minute stretch and workout. Is that crazy or is that simply incredibly FIT!? I know them to be successful women raising healthy children, thriving in their careers and contributing to society. They love their yoga... Heaven on Earth by Emma R. Frey

Augusta, Missouri, may be known for its quaint and rustic charm, but the little town about an hour’s drive west of St. Louis, is also home to a little piece of heaven on earth — Halcyon Spa. This haven is just about the best thing that could ever happen to those longing for rest and relaxation. Housed within a 100-year-old mill, Halcyon Spa offers a myriad of treatments and services ranging from massages and facials to manicures and salon services. Their Deep Tissue Massage focuses on tissue tension and areas that require more pressure. To pamper your skin, try Halcyon’s Eminence Organic Microdermabrasion Treatment that exfoliates and oxygenates your skin. Other offerings include yoga classes, available in group or private sessions, as well as spa party packages for girls’ nights or bachelorette weekends. Kathy Kessler, owner of Halcyon Spa, founded the company in her own home in 2001, and in 2009, moved it to its current location. Kathy completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training in 2012, and also has 20 years experience practicing Physical Therapy, as well as 13 years of massage therapy. She puts these talents to great use at the spa in helping clients reduce body pain, regain mobility, improve posture and simply relax at a deeper level.

In 2013, Halcyon Spa’s lower level was converted into a suite for guests who prefer a multi-day stay. It offers a kitchenette, king size bed and spa shower for relaxation and mental decompression, in addition there is no television in the space to provide and encourage a further disconnection from technology. If you’re looking for a little bit of heaven on earth, visit Halycon Spa. So many services, treatments and options are housed within this charming, unassuming building that it’s a pleasant surprise once you enter. Book your next relaxation retreat at Halcyon Spa and find your own little bit of heaven. For more information on Halcyon Spa’s services, visit their website at www.halcyonaugusta.com. Tower of

by Stacy Hunsicker

I was recently invited to visit Awaken Whole Life Center at Unity Village, outside of Kansas City, Missouri, to experience their services. I asked my significant other to join me on this local getaway weekend. Awaken Whole Life Center is a full-service destination offering rejuvenation of the body, mind and spirit through spa services, integrative medicine, spiritual exploration, coaching and counseling. Awaken occupies seven stories of a historic water tower, with each floor representing a chakra (energy center of the body) through color and artful mandalas. We stayed in the on-site hotel. The rooms were

10

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Summer 2014

5-star along with the service. I especially loved the concierge call while we were settling in, asking if we had everything we needed. My partner had already headed out to scout the beautiful grounds, tour the rose gardens and have a little nap on a bench near the labyrinth. The following morning, we started our spa experience with Shiatsu Massage treatments. This was new for me. Unlike traditional massage, shiatsu massages are performed while you are fully clothed and use no oils or lotions. This treatment left me feeling like I had done a yoga

We then went to the 5th floor, interestingly representing the 5th Chakra which is the throat area. I am calling this the truth serum floor. It can’t be a coincidence the center’s counseling and reading rooms are on this floor. It’s where Akashic Records – the entire blueprint of our souls – are read. We signed up for a couple’s Akashic Records reading, which includes looking into our past and future lifetimes, as well as the present. We asked the practitioner what our souls’ mission was together as a couple. The answer was beautiful, validating and made sense. The room was quiet for a while as we absorbed this information. More silence ... I was hoping that the therapist would probe further. Within a few minutes, my partner broke the silence with a deeply personal question for himself. Suddenly, it felt like we were in an energy vortex and time stopped in that room. The practitioner responded to his question which “caused” me to share some feelings about my partner that I clearly intended to brush under the rug for several more years. My partner was taken aback by my feelings, then responded with another truth about himself. Now, it was my turn to be taken aback. This was something that I sensed and wondered about, but had no intention of discussing for fear of ... what, I can't say. Possibly fear of losing yet another relationship. Fear of being exposed. Well, we were exposed in that room, to the truth. And guess what? It didn’t destroy our relationship. It actually brought us closer. The risk we took walking into the room, of being vulnerable and the desire to have a conscious relationship, gave us the result we were looking for – intimacy. The 5th floor of that tower gave us the safe space to share our greatest fears and the keepers of the Akashic Records gave us the vortex to receive the validation that we are on the right track, in the right relationship and on our mission together.

By relaxing our bodies, it allowed our brains and hearts to begin the process of stepping away from our day-to-day issues and open ourselves to the next step of our rejuvenation.

class – stretched and relaxed, yet rested and renewed. And since it didn’t leave my hair or skin greasy, it’s a great treatment for busy days when you need to go from meeting to meeting. We also found that massage was the perfect way to begin our program of renewal. By relaxing our bodies, it allowed our brains and hearts to begin the process of stepping away from our day-to-day issues and open ourselves to the next step of our rejuvenation.

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Spring 2013 11

I recommend a trip to Awaken for healing and rejuvenation or if you are looking to deepen a relationship with your partner or yourself. They also host wonderful retreats with world-renowned authors and speakers to inspire your life. Awaken Whole Life Center is also excited and honored to welcome Dr. Garrett Gray Sullivan, M.D. A board-certified physician specializing in Family Medicine, Dr. Sullivan provides comprehensive consultation and guidance to those with whom he partners clinically, developing personalized health and healing plans while addressing each individual’s unique health patterns and circumstances. He is well-versed in all branches of general care and brings his whole-person foundation to aid patients that present a full spectrum of medical problems. Now at Awaken Whole Life Center, Dr. Sullivan continues to work to further expand his patients’ health care on a holistic level, when conventional care may fall short of their goals. A Cut Above the Rest

The Salon Antebellum team with the Gentleman of Vision group

If you took a peek at our Spring 2014 issue of Yoga & Spa Magazine, you would have read about Salon Antebellum and its hair artistry queen, Kelly Bileddo. This salon offers the latest and greatest in the world of hair and beauty, but it is also instrumental in the community as well. Owner and founder, Kelly Bileddo, loves giving back to the community. Read on to see what she’s been up to in St. Louis. The Discover Show, which is the biggest annual hair show in St. Louis, took place this past May. Every company in the industry gathered to offer both education and products to hairdressers and salon owners. Kelly produced her very own presentation this year with the Gentleman

of Vision, an organization that promotes getting young men off the streets and on to successful lives. Kelly worked along with these young men for weeks before the event, as they choreographed a step routine for her opening act. Mary Looney, a Salon Antebellum employee, helped Kelly give the young men haircuts before the big day. And Melanie Murray, an employee who was recently hired by Sexy Hair, assisted at the show as well. Rewind a few years now. Soon after Salon Antebellum’s grand opening in 2012, the salon held a St. Baldrick’s fundraising event during their “Party in the Plaza” gala located in front of the salon. St. Baldrick’s is a volunteer-driven charity dedicated towards funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and giving survivors long, healthy lives. Supportive clients and members of the community showed their support by donating funds or shaving their heads for the cause. Kelly even held to her promise of shaving her own head once the salon reached their $1,000 goal in the last hour of the event.

Salon Antebellum may be a business geared lo-res towards outer beauty, but it definitely knows need how find ahigher good balance. Kelly is passionate

about giving back to the community that has given so much to her, and she makes certain that her salon leaves nothing but traces of hope and inspiration wherever it’s involved.

East Meets West by Stacy Hunsicker

San Francisco’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel knows the meaning of romance and relaxation. From their pristine rooms and breathtaking views to their eastern spa treatments and excellent restaurant, the Mandarin Oriental is the definition of East meeting West. A break in the routine is a fantastic way to revitalize your relationshiop and let me tell you, the city of San Francisco has so much to offer for a break in the routine! First, is it’s location. It is a short, 4-hour flight from St. Louis to San Francisco. Flying in on a recent Friday night for dinner out on the town with a return flight Monday evening was the perfect fun-filled, romantic getaway we needed. In this short time we took in several of San Fancisco’s best restaurants - Nico and The Slanted Door, the San Francisco Opera and of course, a trolley ride. The San Francisco Opera did not disappoint with a fantastic performance of Showboat. The San Francisco Opera’s season now contains approximately 75 performances and ten operas between September and July in 14

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Summer 2014

its current War Memorial Opera House. This is a must do if you visit! I’m not sure it could get any more romantic than our view of the city and the bay from the 46th floor of San Francisco’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel. I felt so far away from daily life and so in tune with my significant other--it was completely and utterly romantic. This hotel knows what it’s doing in the way of love and romance, and in creating a haven for couples from the sky deck to the spa. Having always cherished my alone time during massage healing sessions, I was a bit skeptical about the benefits of a couples massage. So when I had the opportunity to try it at the

Mandarin Oriental, I approached it with a bit of trepidation. Turns out, I couldn’t have been more wrong — for us, couples massage therapy was an incredibly bonding experience. Within the cocoon of the Couples Harmony Spa Suite, I received their unique, newly-debuted California Dreaming Treatment, which combined the Spa’s usual treatment products along with local products from California. The treatment, which was 1 hour and 50 minutes long, began with a private aroma analysis followed by a foot ritual and full-body exfoliation using Pacific Ocean mineral salts. Heated, metallic stones were placed along my back while I was massaged with California avocado and grapeseed oils.

Yes, this is the true meaning of luxury. The therapists accommodated my significant other by including an additional foot massage to ensure our treatment times were in sync. At one point my partner dozed off and was snoring. Rather than feeling distracted, I was comforted knowing he was experiencing deep relaxation and healing. The Mandarin Oriental has a skybridge for a panoramic view of the city and a sky deck on the bay side for private parties, proposals and weddings. Our California Dreaming Spa Journey with the San Francisco Mandarin Oriental was the perfect spot to break away from daily life and revitalize both our energy and relationship.

“Each Mandarin Oriental Hotel Spa has a different “journey” theme. The San Francisco location’s theme is California Dreaming, and it certainly lives up to it.”

How Well Do You Know Your Groomer? by Jen Hoffmeyer Manicuring "downstairs" is a very common service nowadays. While some of us shave, others would rather wax, and some just want it gone forever and opt for expensive laser treatments. There are some big questions for every person considering this non-modest procedure. Where to go? Who to go to? Regardless of how you are deciding to "trim the hedges"; one should definitely ask the question, how well do you know your groomer? With the increasing popularity of below the belt beauty trends, aestheticians that perform this personal procedure are busy! They want to get the clients in, and wax the hair off! And most of the time, they are waxing all of it off! A few weeks ago, the ever so popular Dr. Oz show touched on the topic and alerted the public that a plethora of bacterial infections and even sexually-transmitted diseases can be contracted from the wax pot. This is correct if your aesthetician is double dipping. The term "double dip" is something no aesthetician should ever allow into their vocabulary. The dangerous, dreaded double dip is an absolute no-no! One should always watch the aesthetician closely and look for certain red flags. First, observe the room. Does the wax pot look messy and dirty? Germs love warm places. Wax does not heat to a high enough temperature to kill any bacteria. A "no double dipping" sign near the wax pot is a good indication that the spa takes double dipping seriously. Imagine if the wax that was used to wax your upper lip was the same double dipped

Enjoy 30% off a clean, safe, non-double-dipped Bikini or Brazillian wax when you present this coupon at Sol Tan! Expires August 31 2014 Please call 314.459.3930 to make an appointment

wax that was used on the private parts of the client before you. It's a scary thought and trust in your aesthetician is key. Second, does your aesthetician use protective gloves before they start the procedure? Would you want your gynecologist examining you without wearing gloves? I'm guessing probably not. Last, but not least, what kind of applicators do they use? The most sanitary way to wax is by disposable wooden spatulas. Every time the spatula is dipped into the wax and then applied to your skin, the spatula should be thrown away and a new one should be used. If you see a roller applicator, run away and run fast! Roller applicators are small rollers that screw on the top of wax cartridges. There is absolutely no way to sanitize these rollers 100%. Everyone wants a service provider that goes above and beyond, especially when it comes to the private parts of our bodies. Added bonuses like numbing creams are a nice offering to be applied to the skin five minutes before the service begins. Having disposable medical paper on the bed to have a barrier between your bare bum and the bed gives added confidence in sanitation procedures. Having some oil and a clean, warm towel handed to you after the service so you feel that you are free of all sticky residue is much appreciated. And finally, the aesthetician should educate you on post care products. The use of post care products can keep your freshly waxed bikini free of embarrassing and infectious red bumps, as well as ingrown hairs. After all, you don't want to trade the hair for something that looks much worse. Schedule your appointment before leaving the salon so when it's time, a simple confirmation call is all you need to remind you it's time to "swap the carpet for tile"! Know your groomer. Pick someone that is educated, professional, and sanitary. Once you truly know your groomer and trust them, you probably will never leave them!

Yoga Revamped:

Yoga is taking the world by storm, becoming the new hip, “it” thing to do for exercise. Studios are popping up everywhere and it’s just pretty much the talk of the town as the latest and greatest physical activity. But, for those whose schedules won’t allow for yet another time commitment, there is a brand new world of online yoga available, and Debra O’Bryan from Joyful Breath Yoga in Kansas City, knows what’s up. As founder and instructor, Debra O’Bryan has developed the perfect remedy for the overly-busy yogi: online yoga classes. These web sessions give you the chance to practice whenever and wherever you want--all at your own pace. In contrast to in-studio classes, online classes allow you to try many yoga styles and find the perfect fit for you--be it gentle yoga, power yoga or any other variety. Sean, a Joyful Breath Yoga online student, raves about the classes.

“My wife and I have a busy life with four small children. Both of us work full time jobs, so finding time to exercise isn’t easy. JoyfulBreathYoga.com has enabled me to practice any type of yoga any time of day... it’s truly one of the best things I have ever started and consistently kept doing.” Along with many other varieties of yoga classes offered, online prenatal yoga classes are also available. Michelle, an avid fan of these sessions, explains why they mean so much to her. “Online yoga has been a lifesaver during my pregnancy. The farther along I progress through my pregnancy, the more hit or miss my energy levels have been. Having the convenience of yoga anytime I want or need has been perfect for any energy level.” Along with all these other benefits, Joyful Breath Yoga’s online classes are not only

available 24/7, but they are also much more reasonably-priced than buying in-studio classes. At only $15 per month--and a whole year for $99--these offerings allow even those with a tight budget to partake in doing what they love. In a world where time is of the essence and yoga is growing more popular every day, there lies a happy medium: online yoga classes.Take your yoga with you everywhere you go, use it as cross-training alongside your other forms exercise, heck, do it in your PJ’s Saturday morning with the kids. A whole new opportunity has opened up in the world of yoga, seize it and let loose (whenever and wherever!) Y&S: Have you always been interested in fitness? MK: Fitness has always been an important part of my life. I taught my first aerobics class twenty nine years ago, and haven’t stopped since. Y&S: How did you get involved with boot camp? MK: I have always used interval training with my private clients as a way to actually see and feel results without getting bored. My boot camp classes are 90 minutes of intense cardio mixed in with body weight training. We never use more than a 5 pound dumbbell in my classes. We are constantly moving even during our recoveries. I like to tell my students, you can work out all day in your comfort zone or you can come to my class for 90 minutes and work out of your comfort zone and get the results you want. I am truly energized by teaching and motivating people to be their best. Y&S: How do you emotionally balance being a mother, wife and boot camp instructor? MK: It is always a work in progress. Fitness is just as much a part of my health care plan as getting a physical every year or going to a therapist. For me, fitness is as important to my mental wellbeing as it is my physical wellbeing. It is a gift that I give to myself and

to my family. Y&S: Have you taught boot camp anywhere else besides St. Louis? MK: Nope, just in the Lou. Y&S: You’re an avid yoga student. Where do you take classes and does yoga help balance out your other activities in life? MK: I have practiced Bikram yoga at least three times a week for the past eight years. I have rheumatoid arthritis and Bikram has been my saving grace (along with my amazing doctor). It allows my body to continue to do the physical activities that I enjoy doing. The class is hard, sometimes more mentally than physically. It takes a lifetime of practice, and even though every class has the same postures, it is always different depending on what your body needs that day. It not only heals the body, it also heals the mind. I am a true believer. Y&S: Describe a normal day for you. MK: Hmmm…normal day…not sure what that is. My husband is a photographer and we have two beautiful daughters, an 11-yearold and a 2-year-old. I am early to bed and early to rise. My husband and I start the day with a hot breakfast for our girls and then hit the ground running. After school, we are busy shuttling the girls to their activities. There are no electronics, so this is when a lot

of the good conversations happen. We also sit down as a family for dinner, at home, 6 nights a week…house rule. Y&S: What are some of the benefits of boot camp training? And can people of all ages participate? MK: As I mentioned before, it is all about interval training and challenging your body with new movements. My classes are very high-energy and filled with exercises you would typically not do on your own. My clients and students don’t need me to do bicep curls with them, they can do that on their own, but a tall plank round house back pike up…that is a different story. We are always working multiple muscle groups at the same time. It is a tough workout and incredibly fast paced, you will build lean muscle mass, blast calories and feel amazing. I recommend new clients work out with me one on one at least one time to get a feel for the class. We have different fitness levels in the class. I only ask that you compete only with yourself and work to your maximum level. You don’t get what you wish for, you get what you work for. Y&S: What is one empowering message you’d like to share with women everywhere? MK: Just remember, there is someone out there praying for the things that you take for granted.

The original hot yoga. Sweat, smile, and be amazed! Intro Special: $40 for One Month of Unlimited Yoga

Prenatal Yoga for Calm Moms

Newly Renovated!

Bikram's original hot yoga class is designed for all levels. The series of 26 postures helps improve circulation, increase flexibility and strength and eliminate toxins. Come sweat with us! 6630 Clayton Rd. • St. Louis, MO 63117 • 314.644.2226 • yogastlouis.com

Yoga has been proven to make your body stronger, your mind calmer and to build the connection between the two. This can make yoga ideal for pregnant women dealing with changing bodies and the stress of impending parenthood. You can be a newbie or experienced at yoga and/or parenthood to reap these benefits of a regular prenatal practice. 1. Improved strength: You wouldn’t go into a marathon without training, why not train for labor? Asanas, or poses, targeted for pregnancy will strengthen the muscles needed for labor, improve endurance and tighten the pelvic floor. Strengthening the core can help with back pain, a common pregnancy complaint. Also, better muscle tone can help you sleep better and get back in shape more quickly after baby.

EXPERIENCE YOGA

2. Improved flexibility and balance: Relaxed balancing poses during a prenatal yoga class can help you combat pregnancy clumsiness and regain the balance lost as your center of gravity shifts. Improved flexibility can make moving through various birthing positions less difficult. Finally, open hips. Enough said.

Online Yoga Classes Anytime, Anywhere

3. Mental and emotional health: learning how to control your breath can generally reduce anxiety during pregnancy and specifically help you breathe through contractions and manage pain during labor. Bonding with and learning from other pregnant women in the uplifting and supportive environment of a yoga class is a bonus.

A NEW WAY TO

Finally, yoga teaches us to stay in the moment as well as to surrender to and accept discomfort and change rather than to struggle against it: these are important lessons for riding the ups and downs of both pregnancy and parenthood.

Lifestyle

As women, depending on our personal style expression, (Classic, Creative, Romantic, Dramatic) we are attracted to floral, lace, leather (oh my), colorful prints, bold colors, asymmetrical silhouettes, clean lines, and statement jewelry to reflect our individuality and express our style and we have FUN doing this! Men need STYLE too – I want fashion, dressing well and style to be fun and creative and I want it to help express their personality and individuality; help them ‘stand out in a crowd’ and have confidence doing it, knowing they not only look good, but more importantly feel good!! The same feeling women have when we walk into a room in killer heels and an amazing outfit, while our hair and make-up never looked SO good!!

What does Style mean? Oxford Dictionary states that it’s ‘a manner of doing something.’ Style is in everything, it is all around us! It is the way we dress, arrange our hair, conduct ourselves in a personal or professional setting; it is a way of painting, writing, decorating, building, behaving, approaching a situation, it is a distinctive appearance. As women, we enjoy shopping, looking at fashion magazines, talking to our girlfriends about the latest trends and even spending all day at the mall going store to store. But I don’t know too many men that would behave the same way! Can you imagine a group of guys frolicking through the mall giggling over great outfits?! Unfortunately, no, but one can dream. However, I am an extremely lucky woman because my husband is very on-trend, artistic and loves everything in ‘style.’ I have found that most men don’t understand the importance of style in fashion and dressing well. It is so much more than just ‘looking flashy’ or superficial. It expresses confidence, self-esteem, reflects our personality.

Some men may view all of this as just being materialistic; but it’s quite the contrary! Unfortunately, men don’t dress for the job they want, they dress for the job they have! They become a ‘sea of black, grey, white and khaki’; no distinctive STYLE, no individuality, never being ‘noticed.’ I have one client who revamped his style, wearing finer fabrics and a better fit while boasting pops of color and a ‘style’ all his own. Upper management started to take notice and asked him to interview for a rather large promotion. With more confidence in play, he received this great promotion! He absolutely credits this to finding his STYLE and dressing for the job he wanted!! Another client during his final interview was told by the interviewer that if more guys dressed like him, they would be making a lot more money, so STYLE does MATTER!!! Don’t be afraid to look good!! Skin Sanity As the weather heats up and the sun’s rays become stronger, make sure you’re getting the right sunscreen coverage that your skin needs.

by Julie Longyear

Warmer temperatures beg us to show a little skin. As the mercury rises, arms, legs, shoulders and more all come out to play. While sunny days are welcome, what isn’t so delightful is the damage that can come with extended exposure to UV rays. We’ve heard dermatologists and beauty experts repeat the mantra of “always wear sunscreen” for years. The sunscreen market isn’t so simple now, however, with conflicting news about chemical and mineral sunscreens alike. Let’s shine a light on the knowledge you need to shop smart for yourself and your family. We all know the pain and redness of sunburns, but that’s just one of the detrimental effects of too much UV exposure. Other problems include a buildup of free radicals in the skin, inflammation, breakdown of skin’s firmness and structure of collagen and elastin, wrinkling, and the big bad consequence of skin cancer. This makes it well worth your time to spend a moment on the right sunscreen. Children are especially at risk. A single blistering sunburn for a child can more than double their chances of melanoma according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. There are two types of sunscreens available. Chemical sunscreens include ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, octinoxate (octyl methoxycinnamate). These ingredients sink into the first layer of the skin, the epidermis, and absorb and transform UV rays into heat energy to prevent burning.

34

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Summer 2014

Until about 10 years ago the only chemical sunscreen agents used blocked only UVB rays and not UVA. UVB rays are responsible for skin “burning” – the redness of erythema and darkening of the skin with melanin production. UVA rays, however are responsible for penetrating deeper into the dermis tissues and causing free radical buildup and many of the changes that lead to skin cancer. This means that no sunscreens really blocked cancer-causing rays until just recently. Avobenzone is one of the recent UVA chemical blocking agents. It is now being added to chemical sunscreens that want to claim “full spectrum” UV protection. It is the only chemical that absorbs the whole UVA spectrum. The major problem is that it has been found to actually degrade when exposed to sunlight. This means its efficacy goes away very quickly. 50 to 90% of the efficacy of avobenzone is lost after just 1 hour of exposure to sunlight. Stabilizers may be added to the formulation to increase the longevity of avobenzone but the research supports that its efficacy is limited. While you may not burn, the UVA protection is gone in a short time. Ironically many people will stay in the sun longer when they’ve applied sunscreen believing they are protected, increasing their chances of exposure to long term damage from UVA rays. One additional problem with chemical sunscreens is that they can actually increase the free radical content in skin exposed to the sun. Studies have documented that sunscreen chemicals produce free

radicals inside the skin at a higher rate than the bare, control subject’s skin exposed to the same amount of sun. This means a greater chance for cell mutations over long periods of time. Oxybenzone has also been found to act in an estrogenic way in the body which can affect hormone balance over time.

Nano particles are unofficially defined as particles of 100nm or smaller. It is possible for particles of 100nm to 200nm to be transparent to the human eye when applied to skin. Some manufacturers simply declare their products to be non-nano and some will disclose their particle size. Others like Keys Care are quite proud and vocal about using nano technology. Even manufacturers like Badger who use particles of above 200nm due to customer request support that particles as low as 30nm have been proven reliably not to migrate into the body. The controversy over nano or non-nano is a distraction. Mineral sunscreens have been proven to remain on the outer layer of the skin and are very effective full spectrum UV blockers. Zinc oxide blocks UVA and UVB rays. Titanium Dioxide is most effective at blocking UVB rays and is often included in mineral sunscreens that wish to achieve a higher SPF rating. Furthermore neither zinc or titanium degrade or lose efficacy when exposed to UV rays.

4:20 PM

The alternative to chemical sunscreens is mineral sunscreen. Mineral or physical sunscreens are composed of zinc oxide or titanium dioxide or a mixture of both. The mineral particles cover the skin and act like tiny mirrors to bounce UV rays back off the skin so they are not absorbed. Recent technologies have enabled the particle size of these minerals to be reduced to a point where they are virtually transparent on skin in most cases. Different manufacturers use different particle sizes and there has been some controversy in the media over “nano” and “non-nano” size particles. The concern has been that nano particles of zinc or titanium might be small enough to migrate into the tissues of the body and bloodstream and cause internal cell damage. Research, however, does not support this worry and in fact refutes it completely. Still many people remain concerned.

It may take some testing to find your preferred brand of mineral sunscreen. Darker skin types may have a slightly trickier time as some of the higher SPF products could still leave a slight white cast on skin. Options in the SPF 30 range from Devita, Keys, and Soleil Toujours offer very transparent choices with clean, natural product bases that should suit many skin types. Given the risks associated with severe sunburn if you must make the choice to use a chemical sunscreen you’re still better off slathering up to avoid a burn. However for long term use mineral sunscreens are the proven safer, more effective choice to prevent burns and damage that ages skin and can result in cancer. Combine your use of mineral sunscreens with sun protective clothing and hats as blocking or avoiding excessive sun exposure is the best solution of all. Prevention is paramount when dealing with the sun. The rewards of your efforts now will come in future decades and sunscreen is far easier than surgeries and expensive treatments to ease damage once it has set in. Play it safe!

Yoga: Exercise or Exercise for the Mind? Yoga’s mental and emotional healing benefits are becoming increasingly well known. A good yoga teacher can teach us to bring gentle awareness to the rich and complex inner phenomenon of feeling within the body with each breath. In our fast paced lives, we habitually pay attention to outside phenomenon — other cars on the road, reactions from our coworkers, etc. We may regard others with fear, approach them for approval, or both. Yoga helps us come home to our primary relationship with ourselves. As we shift our focus to what is happening within our body and call upon our breath as our guide, we are learning that we can be our own caregivers and our own source of strength. This sets up an empowering process in which we gain practice making effective choices that nourish our mind and body. If you have a home yoga practice, you may try this next time you pull out your mat. After warming up, assume a familiar, yet challenging yoga pose. Avoid a pose that induces pain or aggravates pre-existing injuries. If you feel challenged in this pose, notice your breath. Are you still breathing?

Is the breath becoming tense? If the breath is strained, try making the pose more subtle. For example, if you are in triangle pose, lift your shoulders to reduce the stretch (strained breath indicates overstretching). Once you make the needed adjustment, notice the new sensation. Do you notice any emotions associated with making this choice to take care of yourself? Do you notice a difference in your perceived ability to meet the challenge of the pose? Take a moment to pay close attention to any shifts in your experience. With continued practice under the guidance of a good teacher, yoga can be a powerful ally for healing. With each moment of connection to our bodies and each choice to modify our experience, we are building a sense confidence, calmness, and resiliency that can translate to more empowered lives off the mat. Tessa's Tips

by Tessa Greenspan

Managing and reducing your stress level is a difficult, continuous task. Use the following tips to help you cope and lessen your stress, making your life more enjoyable and fruitful. • Avoid Caffeine, Alcohol, and Nicotine Avoid, or at least reduce your consumption of nicotine and all drinks containing caffeine, alcohol and refined sugars. Caffeine, alcohol and nicotine are stimulants and will increase your level of stress rather than reduce it. Swap caffeinated and alcoholic drinks with water, herbal teas, or diluted natural fruit juices and aim to keep yourself hydrated as this will enable your body to cope better with stress. • Engage in Physical Activity Stressful situations increase the level of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol in your body. These “fight or flight” hormones that evolution has hard-wired into our brains are designed to protect us from immediate bodily harm when we are threatened. However, stress in the modern age is rarely remedied by a fight or flight response, so physical exercise can be used as a replacement. Exercise can metabolize the excessive stress hormones and restore your body and mind to a calmer, more relaxed state. Yoga is an outstanding stress reliever. • Get More Sleep A lack of sleep is a significant cause of stress, yet stress is usually the main factor in why we can’t sleep. This vicious circle causes even more worry and anxiety. Rather than relying on medication, your aim should be to maximize your relaxation before going to sleep. Make sure that your bedroom is a tranquil oasis with no reminders of the stressful things in your life. Also try to get to bed at the same time every night. • Try Relaxation Techniques Each day, try to relax with a stress-reduction technique. One very simple technique is to focus on a word or phrase that has a positive meaning to you. Words such as "calm" "love" and "peace" work well, or you could think of a self-affirming mantra such as “I deserve calm in my life” or “grant me serenity”. Focus on your chosen word or phrase; if you find your mind has wandered or you become aware of intrusive thoughts entering your mind, simply disregard them and return your focus to the chosen word or phrase.

• Talk to Someone Stress can cloud your judgement and prevent you from seeing things clearly. Talking things through with a friend, work colleague, or even a trained professional, can help you find solutions to your stress and put your problems into perspective. • Keep a Stress Diary Note down the date, time and place of each stressful episode, and note what you were doing, who you were with, and how you felt both physically and emotionally. Give each stressful episode a stress rating (on, say, a 1-10 scale) and use the diary to understand what triggers your stress and how effective you are in stressful situations. • Manage Your Time At times, we all feel overburdened by our 'To Do' list and this is a common cause of stress. Accept that you cannot do everything at once and start to prioritize your tasks. Make a list of all the things that you need to do and list them in order of priority. • Learn to Say ‘No’ A common cause of stress is having too much to do and too little time in which to do it. And yet in this situation, many people will still agree to take on additional responsibility. Learning to say “No” to additional or unimportant requests will help to reduce your level of stress. • Rest If You Are Ill If you are feeling unwell, do not think that you need to keep going. A short spell of rest will enable the body to recover faster. For info about natural products that help reduce stress, contact Tessa Greenspan at Tessa@ TessaGreenspan.com.

The study found healthy, sedentary seniors who began exercise programs showed significant improvements in cognitive function, particularly mental processing speed. What a tremendous outcome for a relatively easy solution! Increase exercise. Of course all seniors should visit their physician’s before initiating an exercise routine. alike, dancing. Exercise in the form of dance does not seem like exercise! Even residents who are chair bound, “dance” from their chairs. Employees hold their hands and move to the music. Why Green Cleaning? Many common household cleaning products are made with petroleum based solvents which are known to emit volatile organic compounds. These (VOC's) can cause headaches, dizziness, as well as irritation to the eyes, nose and throat among other symptons.

Most household cleaning needs can be met safely and effectively with a scouring pad and simple ingredients like baking soda, vinegar, and plant based products that are easily purchased at your local grocery store.

Fragrances are added to make many cleaning products smell great but , The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has found that one-third of the substances used in the fragrance industry are Toxic. Chemicals in fragrances are considered trade secrets so companies aren’t required to list their ingredients and can label them as containing “fragrance.”

Nature Maids Cleaning is committed to providing environmentally friendly, meticulous house cleaning for every single one of our clients at an affordable price.

Research articles show that some chemicals are thought to be “hormone disruptors” and can interfere with our body’s natural chemical messages either by blocking or mimicking the actions of hormones. Possible health effects include birth defects and increased rates of some kinds of cancers. Environmental concerns of some chemicals in our cleaning products would include phosphates, (water softening mineral additives) When phosphates enter waterways, they act as a fertilizer, promoting the overgrowth of Algae which eventually depletes the oxygen supply killing off fish and other organisms.

Nature Maids uses only biodegradable, non-toxic cleaning products that are effective, yet safe for the health of your family, our employees and the planet. Our routine cleaning includes every single nook and cranny from the light fixtures to the baseboards and you can feel great knowing we will conduct business at the highest level of honesty and integrity. Restaurant Rave

Nathalie’s Brings Farm-Fresh Goodness to the CWE by Emma R. Frey, Assistant Editor Just recently, my boss, Stacy Hunsicker, and I ventured to Nathalie’s in the Central West End for dinner. Nathalie’s offers farm-to-table fare and both of us had been lucky enough — a few months prior — to tour Overlook Farm, the source of a lot of the ingredients used at the restaurant. I was excited to take the experience full circle. Nathalie Pettus, who owns and runs both Nathalie’s in St. Louis and Overlook Farm in Clarksville, Missouri, adds her own sense of style to the restaurant, mixing breezy, cottage-style elements of spring green and crisp white with enough red and gold accents to make me feel as though I was in a Jane Austen novel. Every design feature — including wall art and larger decorative pieces — is placed with care and completely compliments the wonderful menu. Each ingredient has been nurtured and cultivated just as each piece of decor has been selected for a reason and purpose. Stacy and I sat near the big picture window overlooking Lindell Boulevard, which allowed us to watch passersby as well as enjoy Nathalie’s beautiful landscaping out front; manicured hedges as well as evergreen shrubbery further proved that we could be dining back in Jane Austen’s time . Both of us decided that we wanted to sample as many dishes as we could, so we perused the menu and made the difficult decisions. For our entree, we chose the Thai Red Curry. This dish — except for the rice and curry seasoning — was entirely made from what was grown and raised at Overlook Farm. It was truly a delight to the senses and it made me happy to know that the food I was eating had been harvested from the farm not too long ago. Light green snap peas were accompanied by tender rice, poached green beans, red and green bell peppers, and juicy, free-range chicken. Coconut juice added a tropical flavor to the dish as well. To accompany the entree, our waiter recommended a glass of 2011 Rudi West Riesling from Mosel Germany. Slightly off-dry, it complemented the heat and spice of the curry. Although the entire meal was perfection, we saved the best for last with Nathalie’s Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. The dessert came plated on a long, rectangular dish with vanilla bean ice cream at one end, and a mini, lattice-topped pie at the other. The crust

was light yet also had the perfect amount of crunch while the strawberries and rhubarb balanced each other superbly. Nathalie’s is truly a hidden gem in St. Louis, and I encourage you to book a dinner reservation there in the near future (they now offer Sunday brunch as well). And, if you’re adventurous, take a visit to Overlook Farm so you can see and appreciate all the work and cultivation that goes into the food prepared at the restaurant. At Nathalie’s, everything flows together seamlessly--from the decor and ambience to the food presentation and the delightful food itself. This is no doubt a true, farm-to-table restaurant and with every bite you take, you can taste it. Nathalie’s is open on Mondays from 4pm-12am and Wed-Sunday, 4pm12am, closed Tuesday. Choosing Self-Compassion by Rebecca Wiederkehr, LCSW “I am larger and better than I thought. I did not think I held so much goodness.” Walt Whitman Walt Whitman speaks for all. Then why do I sometimes feel like I am stumbling around in a mire of mistakes and shortcomings? Why do I sometimes feel as if everyone else has it together and knows the code for happiness—and I’m being kept in the dark? Are self-criticism and self-hatred running my life? The isolation we feel can be devastating. Self-criticism can cripple us. It breeds selfhatred. It is happening to everyone, to some degree, off and on. We judge ourselves for feeling this way and think we are the only ones. We are all in this together, a part of the shared humanity of suffering. How can we interrupt this cycle and befriend ourselves? How can we learn to be kind and build self-compassion? Self-compassion has three components: a) being kind to ourselves, b) knowing we belong to a shared humanity, and c) building mindfulness to help us healthily navigate our world.

Our team has sold over 61 million dollars in real estate and is in the top 1% of all agents in our MLS. Our Luxury home certification gives our clients maximum exposure to foreign buyers along with website translation into 28 languages. Call us today for a VIP consultation at 636-229-8770!

By heightening our awareness and stopping the cycle each time it pops up, we can learn to self-soothe with self-compassion, with loving acceptance. The sooner we can understand that the inner critic thinks it is helping us with this criticism, keeping us from “another failure,” the sooner we can gratefully befriend this critical part with compassion, letting it know we no longer need this false protection. Have you noticed how, when in the presence of certain people, you feel very connected and resonate with them? Consider that they are reflecting to you who you are, your goodness, your wisdom, your beautiful SELF. If you didn’t also have these qualities, you wouldn’t have a clue how they felt. When we experience the beauty of nature and something moves inside us, once again, we are seeing a reflection of a bit of the beauty and truth inside ourselves.

48

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Summer 2014

It seems at times that self-criticism and selfhatred have become an epidemic, reflecting

back to us the horrendous insanity going on in our world instead of the wonderful good things happening as well. We so freely take in the craziness of a competitive, cruel world and make it ours. Let’s say to ourselves, “Stop it! Enough already!” Then have the conversation with ourselves about the beautiful, loving, gifted, and full-ofgoodness person we are inside and reflect that part of the world. If we are not alone in these bouts of suffering, we are also not alone in experiencing the awesome beauty, truth and goodness. Honor them in everyone. We are part of a shared humanity. We do have a choice. The sooner we can consciously make the positive choice over and over, building new brain pathways, “brain muscles,” the sooner we can all do our part in making this world a better place for all. Some ways to mindfully focus on breaking the cycle of criticism when it rears its ugly head and nurturing self-compassion: Neuroscience has confirmed that mindfulness and meditation are our best tools for developing self-compassion. Develop this practice. Imagine being under oath and regularly make honest lists of all your positive qualities. Notice how we are alike, instead of how we are different. Have gratitude for what shaped you from your past, from ancestors, parents, teachers, and your culture. Practice, practice, practice! Self-compassion is a worthwhile, lifechanging goal for all of us. It is worthy of our strong commitment and diligence in making it happen. It will make us more loving toward ourselves and others. Yes, it is a courageous journey. Y&S Interview

Lisa Roberts YOYO Yoga Therapy

Lisa Roberts, founder of YOYO Yoga Therapy and author of Breathe, Chill, sat down with Yoga & Spa Magazine and gave us the scoop on what she’s doing in the world of pediatric yoga therapy. Y&S: How long have you been practicing yoga and what made you interested in it? LR: My very first yoga class was on a retreat in Thailand at the age of 23 and I hated it! The teacher forced me into headstand, which I was not comfortable with in addition to having mild cervical scoliosis… that one headstand landed me at the chiropractor and in a lot of pain. I did not try yoga again until five years later in 2001 when I was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma. Exploring what I could contribute to the healing process in collaboration with my medical team on this journey I decided to give yoga another try. My sister — who was by my side each step of this healing journey — and I signed up for a class and were immediately hooked. In fact, we are both yoga teachers now! Y&S: You have been involved in pediatric wellness since 2006, what made you decide to go that route with your practice? LR: I LOVE kids and in 2006 while living in New York City the opportunity arose to offer wellness to patients, families and staff at NYU’s pediatric hemac clinic. Leaving me inspired and fulfilled, my weekly clinic days offering wellness at NYU became the single most important day of my work week. When I moved to Saint Louis in 2008, I immediately volunteered at Saint Louis Children’s Hospital to fill what would certainly have been a huge void in my life. Specializing in pediatric yoga I joke that my yoga classes are for kids aged 1-101, and it is true, I really do have clients of all ages. Is there really an age restriction on being a kid? I hope not!

Y&S: Your book, Breathe, Chill focuses on breathing, meditation and relaxation for children. Have you always wanted to write? What urged you to create this resource? LR: I attended drama school in London and ended up becoming a freelance writer and editor, I am lucky that writing and creativity come quite naturally to me. My book is based on patient handouts I created for the pediatric oncology, hematology and neurology populations I work with — explaining breathing, meditation and relaxation techniques I have developed for kids and teens in simple, non yoga language — incredibly popular with patients, families, staff and teachers, it became clear that I needed to compile and publish them as a resource for anybody working with kids in any capacity. I’ve received feedback from many adults who have enjoyed practicing the techniques in the book too! Y&S: Has your book been a success and have you received good feedback from parents or teachers? LR: Absolutely! People love how accessible and easy to follow it is. No yoga experience required makes it less intimidating to approach working with and introducing these techniques to kids. Of course, I would love to see a copy in every classroom around the globe as these techniques provide solid foundational tools and valuable life skills that will carry our children well into adulthood. Y&S: What different types of yoga do you practice and teach?

50

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Summer 2014

LR: Mixing it up is my motto — I love practicing hot yoga and vinyasa flow, slow flow is nice when I need to be mellow and a good restorative class hits the spot when my mind and body need the love. Exploring different teachers and studios is important to me as I continue to learn and grow experiencing different teachers and teaching styles. Working with a lot of first time yogis, proper breathing and alignment is very important to me, I am a bit of a stickler for both as the more my students understand and learn correct foundational asana practice, the less susceptible they will be to injury when they venture in to self practice. Y&S: What are some of the benefits that kids and teens receive from practicing yoga as opposed to other physical activity? LR: No different to adults — Improved Posture, Balance, Flexibility, Confidence and Ability to Focus, Relaxation, Anxiety and Stress Relief, Self-Regulation Skills and a Positive Body Image. Really valuable tools for every body, and in today’s world, kids and teens especially benefit from yoga and yoga related activities such as breathing and meditation. The ability to take what they learn about themselves on the mat and incorporate it into their lives is what makes yoga really stand apart. Y&S: If you had one sentence to sum up the goal or mission of YOYO Yoga Therapy, what would it be? LR: Making yoga available and accessible to ALL children regardless of physical or economical circumstances.
