Publisher’s Letter

A Decade of Yoga This month, I’m celebrating a decade of practicing yoga. My love for and dedication to yoga has never been deeper. It is my sanctuary for body, mind and soul. Yoga

cares for and heals my body. Now with 30 fewer pounds, I’m happily free of aches and pains. Illness is an infrequent visitor. Yoga seems to have a reverse aging effect as my daily energy expands.

After these ten years, I truly look and feel better than ever. Most importantly,

yoga has quieted the drama in my mind that fueled the drama of my life. Once

yoga calmed my mental drama, more of life opened to me, including traveling internationally to consult for and write about resorts, spas and yoga retreats.

Seven years into my yoga practice, I enjoyed a memorable yoga retreat at the beautiful Grand Velas Resort & Spa in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Our daily routine involved rising early for an hour of yoga postures followed by an hour of silent,

sitting meditation. One morning, teacher Mas Vidal said something that gave me huge awareness:

“The purpose of yoga is to prepare you to meditate.”

(honor) the Divine in you. Practicing self-care honors ourselves. It honors the precious gift of life we have been given. When we love and care

for ourselves we are available to others. During this spring season, renew your

commitment to self-care. The more we love and honor ourselves, the more we can enjoy life, regardless of circumstances.

Yoga helped me realize that if we want a better life, we must change our inner life. Our outer life simply reflects what’s inside. Let yoga lead you to your destiny.

When you feel as if you are in survival mode or life is overwhelming, connect to yoga or head to a spa! Your perception will change, solutions will appear and you’ll be inspired to take the next action toward your best life.

Happy Wedding Day; Happy Life by Gayle Wilson Rose Your wedding day is one of the most memorable days of your life. It signifies a major life leap involving much planning, eager anticipation and countless decisions. When the post-engagement adrenaline subsides, it’s time to start planning. With so many moving parts to manage, the first step is a big one: securing a distinctive, yet affordable, venue. Overlook Farm in Clarksville, Missouri, should top your short list.

* Distinctive and Picturesque Settings Avalon Hall is the primary gathering spot for a reception at Overlook. Imagine a cross between an elegant castle and a rustic barn ---this venue defines luxury and country elegance and can accommodate as many as 300 guests.

This picturesque, 327-acre farmland boasts rolling hills, historic minimansions for housing guests and abundant intimate places to celebrate inside or under the star-lit sky. Best part? It’s a destination wedding that doesn’t come with the hassle that a remote locale entails.

A Courtyard Wedding in Overlook’s patio complex features welcoming entertainment spaces: an outdoor kitchen with wood-burning oven, 12-foot grill, extensive bar seating, two fire pits and a waterfall. As many as 500 guests can gather here.

Here’s all you need to know about this highly-sought-after wedding and reception venue:

Overlook and Avalon Meadow are unparalleled with a ‘vows and wows’ wedding spot perched high above the Mississippi. With the charming town of Clarksville, farmland, and the rolling hills unfolding below, this spot is majestic.

*Location, Location, Location Scenic landscapes, sophisticated lodging and gathering spaces are abundant at Overlook Farm, located an easy 90 minute drive north of St. Louis. This destination wedding and reception venue is far enough away from the ordinary (think hotel banquet halls), yet close enough 8

that guests will welcome the escape. Overlook event coordinators can even arrange party buses from St. Louis to shuttle your guests in style.

to amaze diners. The farm-to-table culinary experience delights the most discriminating foodies. Overlook’s experienced and accommodating event staff tailors every detail of your gathering to ensure an outstanding experience. The day will be yours to enjoy without worry. * Impeccably-Appointed Private Accommodations The Bridal Cottage This cozy cottage sits above the meadows of Overlook and provides an intimate space to get away and luxuriate in the comfort of each other as you enjoy sunrises and sunsets. A full kitchen, fireplace, and beautifullydecorated bedrooms make for a romantic setting. Avalon House This fully-furnished four-bedroom, four-bath home with breathtaking views overlooking the river works well as a whole-house rental for a family or close friends. Rackheath House and Garden The impeccably maintained grounds surrounding Rackheath House offers a classic garden wedding setting. The lovingly-restored 1860s estate sparkles with antique furnishings. The property includes a canopied lawn, large second-story veranda, Romanesque pool, and sculpted rose garden with fountain. Being happily married is grounded in selecting a compatible partner and finding balance. Similarly, an unforgettable wedding venue and outstanding experience is a foretelling start to a fulfilling life together. So choose wisely; Choose Overlook Farm for your wedding day.

Your Bachelorette Party Planning Guide Which bachelorette gathering would you be most likely to select? (a.)Dinner at a steakhouse followed by an evening of bar-hopping while you’re forced to wear a pink tutu and plastic tiara. Aging Gracefully Includes Prevent Oral Bone Loss Preserving Facial Structure Caused By a Lost Tooth All-Inclusive Dental Implants at Artistic Dentistry Make Tooth Replacement Simple

by Dr. Peter J. Pagano Beverly Hills 90210 actress Shannon Doherty once commented that she looked forward to wearing the natural laugh lines and wrinkles that come with aging. She viewed them as acquiring character in her face. This natural progression of lines and wrinkles might be what’s commonly regarded as “graceful aging.” The graceful process of aging can be accelerated by tooth loss. Tooth loss leads to bone loss and a cascading series of events that speed up the appearance of facial aging. Without a tooth, the surrounding bone no longer has a purpose and begins to shrink. This can cause: · · · ·

Teeth to shift, which shortens the distance between the chin and nose; Skin to sag around the mouth; Lips to collapse into the mouth; The once-prominent jawline to lose definition.

A dental implant is the best replacement option for a missing tooth because it halts the process described above. The implant acts as a natural tooth to hold the bone in place and give it a purpose. Other teeth are prevented from shifting into the missing space left by the lost tooth - plus, it's easier to floss. One of the first steps to replacing lost teeth with an implant is determining how much bone is present. This can be done in our office using a CT scan, or "3D imaging," as it's also called. The CT scan helps determine if a bone graft will be needed. It’s also used to determine the exact position and angulation for an implant.

A SAME DAY IMPLANT IS POSSIBLE … when placed at time of tooth loss or soon after. Keith arrived in St Louis in the morning and flew home with his new implant and temporary crown (pictured here) a few hours later.

MISSING A TOOTH? Find Out What Your Options Are At Artistic Dentistry, we’ve been offering All-Inclusive Dental Implants since 1999 and most dental procedures in our office. From cleanings to implants and everything in-between, our patients appreciate not having to run around town for dental care.

CALL FOR A COMPLIMENTARY 15 MINUTE CONSULTATION Call 314-576-3000

Bone grafting today is a minimally invasive procedure. Material from a donor is placed in the areas of missing bone. Through a process called "guided tissue regeneration," the human body recognizes the graft biochemically as its own bone and over time resorbs and replaces it with the patient's own native bone. Although dental implants are the preferred tooth replacement option, not everyone is a candidate. Feel free to schedule a complimentary consultation to see if you qualify for an implant procedure or if an optional treatment would be indicated.

New Day Spa Coming Soon!

The Art of Dating While Married by Sufanna Bernarduci After making the leap to married life, many couples drift away from dating their spouse. Not dating or coupling after the honeymoon creates distance. No one marries to feel lonely, but conscious steps are needed to avoid it. It requires deliberate effort to create and maintain sizzle and romance in a marriage. With many people marrying or re-marrying later in life, our hectic life pace and career focused ways, people are often self-involved when they first come together as a couple. While it is important to have self-identity and autonomy within a marriage, couples can find ways to include each other so there is a healthy balance in both their personal and professional lives. It’s as simple as including your partner with fitness activities, hobbies, sporting or musical events, happy hours, work outings, or business trips. Reasons to date your spouse include: • Keeps the relationship magical by intensifying interest and intimacy • Allows private flirt time to create passion for a steamy sex-life • Provides quality time to grow together and not apart • Allows time to share stories and discuss important matters • To bond, laugh and enjoy life together • To be wrapped-up in each other’s world without distraction • You married each other because you liked spending time together and not apart

Dating your spouse need not be costly; financial limitations shouldn’t be an obstacle. No- and low-cost ideas include: Cuddle and watch a movie, play a board game or puzzle, cook a meal together, take a drive and listen to your favorite music, share a picnic, ride bikes in a park, walk on a beach or trail, and play in the snow or rain. All of these activities can foster a solid relationship by sharing quality time. Sufanna Bernarduci is a certified wellness coach and clinical social worker. My father, Clinton Reed, would always say “water is the miracle elixir of life.” As a six year old I was puzzled by this statement but now that I am a physician I can understand why he was so excited about the capabilities of water. When you are thirsty, what do you pour into a glass? Soda, coffee, juice? Water should be your beverage of choice because it hydrates your body like no other drink. You may be inclined to drink water while exercising but water should be within your reach even when you are on the couch. Every cell in your body depends on water but consider the power of water by organ system: Skin—since skin is an important part of your body’s defense system, protecting your skin should be a priority. Water consumption will hydrate your skin and help prevent dry, cracking skin which can increase the risk for infection. Gastrointestinal Tract—the purpose of the large colon is to absorb water which reduces the risk of constipation. Your grandmother may encourage you to eat prunes to stay regular but it cannot hurt to wash those prunes down with a cold glass of water. Often when one feels hunger it may actually be a reflection of one’s thirst. Drinking water prior to eating may reduce your appetite. Urinary System—if you want to cleanse your kidneys, increase your water intake. Your kidneys continue to work while you are asleep so your urine will likely be concentrated every morning. The water that

you drink during the day will allow your urine to become lighter in color as it dilutes. This is a sign that you can use to gauge the amount of water that you have consumed. Circulation—your blood becomes concentrated or thick when you have had poor water intake. Water contributes to plasma which improves your blood flow. Brain and nerves—dehydration may cause electrolyte disturbances which in severe cases could cause seizures. The health benefits of water are limitless. Even if you keep your Nalgene bottle at your desk and your Brita filter stays busy, consider the fact that you may still be dehydrated. When you drink alcohol, consume beverages with caffeine, or take diuretic medications for blood pressure control, you will urinate more often than others which will increase your risk for dehydration. Exercising also makes you lose a great deal of water through sweat so replenishing this fluid loss is critical, especially in your hot yoga class. Try drinking half of your body weight in ounces of water each day to protect your body from the complications of dehydration. Finally, illness can be accompanied by dehydration so drinking plenty of fluids while you are sick will undoubtedly improve your immune system. The next time you are at a restaurant simply ask for a glass of water. Your life depends on it.

I Went

Back to School I’ll never forget the emptiness I felt after losing both of my parents in the same year. Having good days and bad days, I soon became depressed and gained over a hundred pounds. I tried everything to lose weight . . . but deep inside my heart of hearts, I felt like I never could. Then all of a sudden I had a new best friend, low self-esteem, whose silent whispering caused me to pass on every opportunity of attending school functions with my daughter . . . for fear of her being teased about my weight. But one glorious day, after discovering and researching Dr. Salter’s Slim Down - Firm Up program, I found hope. Could there really be a simple, easy and effective weight loss program that would work for me? Well, I tried it and not only did I lose 67 lbs. over several months but the program actually retrained my taste buds to enjoy healthy foods. It wasn't a crash diet; instead it was a real food-based detoxification program, with some key supplements, that gave my metabolism a true jump start. Dr. Salter did blood tests to look at my hormones, and also considered whether a prescription appetite suppressant was appropriate for me. She also emphasized that long-term weight loss must include a mind-body component. So, it wasn't a "one-size-fitsall" approach. My life has changed. I've learned to eat to live, not live to eat. Not only that, I enjoy walking regularly and I now look forward to attending both of my daughters school functions. Your Most Important Relationship

"Getting to the root of the problem"

by Kate Upshur Most of us focus on relationships a lot in our lives, especially as spring arrives. This is only natural. As human beings, we are social creatures. We are wired, quite literally, to believe that our survival is attached to whether we are accepted or rejected by those around us. In our ancient past, it was. However, many of us have also learned to put others’ needs before ourselves. Serving others is essential in our communities, but does not require sacrifice. In fact, when we serve others, we serve ourselves as well. Likewise, when we treat ourselves poorly, this has implications on others as well. Perhaps we become more quickly to anger with our partner after we berate ourselves for a mistake at work. Or we become irritated with coworkers after feeling guilty for snapping at our partner. If you have noticed a similar pattern in your life, you are not the only one. How might our response to our partner be changed if we treat ourselves, and our mistakes, with gentleness and forgiveness? For caregivers that are accustomed to putting their own needs last, resentment can

often build up. They sense that something is missing. Of course we want to care for the needs of others, but if we do this in the spirit of needing to prove our worth, or feeling unworthy of having our own needs met – then we are denying love to ourselves and to others as well. Care giving in place of taking care of ourselves can often backfire. We will find that nurturing the relationship we have with ourselves, allows us to act with greater kindness and compassion in the world – not less. The guilt that comes with self criticism leads to being as harsh with others as we are with ourselves. Imagine a kind act you might do for a loved one. Then translate that to an action for yourself, and then do it. Notice how you feel after doing it. Giving to ourselves provides us with more to give to others. This spring, take a few minutes to reconnect to yourself. You might find that others around you benefit in the process as well. Form and Alignment Through Pilates by Shawn Grow Words from Pilates devotees are a testament to the wide-reaching impact this exercise can have: “When I first started practicing Pilates at Grow-Fit Studios, I relied on a walker; after three months of practice, I was walking steadily on my own.” “I am measurably taller from doing Pilates and more conscious of how I stand and sit. My gratitude runs deep for Grow-Fit Studio.” For those unfamiliar with Pilates, founder Joseph Pilates described it best: “The complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit.” Every Pilates session at Grow-Fit Studio focuses on the entire body. By concentrating on form and alignment, we learn to work in a balanced and symmetrical way. Quality of movement (not quantity) is the emphasis of Pilates workouts. Pilates teaches us how to be in the moment. Its breathing technique

enables us to utilize our core to center and balance ourselves. GrowFit Studio in Town & Country is an ideal place to begin or continue growing in mind/body connection through fitness. One unique element of the studio is the 45-minute interval-training classes grounded in Pilates principles. As many as four clients participate in a class, so personal attention and correction of form are possible. As our awareness broadens with Pilates movements, it carries over to our daily life. Attention to breath and mind brings calmness and fluidity to movement and reduces tension. Pilates helps to create a body that can stretch and bend to meet the daily demands and flow of life. Best of all, after a Pilates session, we don’t have to leave behind what we learned – we take it with us wherever we go. Shawn Grow is owner of Grow-Fit Pilates & Fitness Studio in Town & Country. Grow is a certified Stott Pilates instructor with eight years teaching experience. More information at grow-fit.com, by email at shawn@grow-fit.com or by calling 314-699-6024.

“I love making people happy; chocolate is a great way to do that.” ~ Mary Jane Weinstein by Julia Wilke Mary Jane Weinstein, creator and owner of Super Sweets by Mary Jane, is on a mission to make this world a bit sweeter. She wants people to discover that indulgent sweets and healthy food are not mutually exclusive. by ??? Weinstein hand-crafts chocolates that are both unprocessed and have numerous nutritional benefits. She provides chocolate lovers with an alternative to traditional candy bars, which can be loaded with preservatives and corn syrup. Using only a few ingredients, Weinstein creates rich flavor in every bite. The launch of Super Sweets is rooted in Weinstein’s search to help her daughters cope with food sensitivities. Unable to tolerate many ingredients in processed desserts, Weinstein’s daughters often resorted smoothies and popsicles as treats. In our world of cupcake bars and birthday parties, she wanted her daughters to be able to indulge, too. Weinstein knew of chocolate’s health benefits and wanted to build on that. In her home kitchen, she started creating healthy chocolate her girls could enjoy. Friends began inquiring about the chocolates; before long, Weinstein’s friends were exhausting her chocolate supply. She realized Super Sweets could be more than her own helpful parenting tool. “I wanted to contribute to the health of the community,” she says. That’s when she took chocolate-making out of her kitchen and into the business world.

Raw, organic, nutrient-dense and pesticidefree ingredients are the cornerstone of Weinstein’s philosophy. This means she never heats the chocolate components above 115 degrees. Instead of using sugar or processed sweeteners, all Super Sweets are made with raw, all-natural honey. Weinstein especially likes to use honey for its anti-inflammatory properties. Organic vanilla rounds out the smooth taste of the chocolate and adds an extra indulgent kick. People are surprised to learn all Super Sweets chocolates contain a powerhouse nutritional boost: raw, organic kale. Weinstein dehydrates kale, renders it into a powder, and carefully adds it to the mix. The kale hides in each piece of chocolate — completely undetectable. Weinstein continues developing other flavors, using the original ingredients as a base. Chia seeds give a crunchy texture and extra protein to Chia Cups. Raspberry, habanero, ginger, olive oil & sea salt are additional flavor varieties. Like with kale, she dehydrates these ingredients and keeps them at a raw-friendly temperature. Weinstein’s passion for quality continues after her candy-making concludes. She delicately hand-wraps the finished products and delivers them to her smiling customers. Here’s EWC’s list of waxing do’s and don’ts for picture-perfect skin:

Wedding Day Priorities • Eyebrow shaping accentuates your eyes and frames your face. Under a veil or not, eyes reflect your emotions, so it’s important to define your perfect shape. • Underarms are critical areas to keep stubble-free. With a strapless or sleeveless gown, many brides opt for waxing their arms as well. • Legs and feet are top waxing zones, especially if you’ll be wearing open-toe shoes. • With a smooth bikini area, you’ll feel your sexiest on your wedding night and poolside on your honeymoon. • Facial waxing will ensure the focus will only be on your bright smile in close-up photos.

Waxing for Wedding Countdown

3

Months Prior: Schedule an appointment with your EWC wax specialist to discuss your optimal plan. Appointments every three weeks for the three months leading up to your big day will help deliver the wow!

2

Months Prior: Think eyebrows! They are like a picture frame; the right brow will accentuate your face and enhance your eyes. Meet with your EWC wax specialist (and bring along your veil) to determine the ideal brow shape for your face.

1

Week Prior: Arms and legs are the focus a week before your big day. A Bikini/Brazilian wax for smooth skin throughout your honeymoon is a must. Any facial waxing would be done now, along with any final shaping and sculpting of brows. Plan ahead for your special day. EWC will be there to help you and your entire bridal party feel pampered, beautiful and gorgeous.

Energizing and Restoring Mothers by Becky Brittain, Ph.D Every Mother’s Day, we celebrate moms and the essential relationship that supports the continuity of life. This role is a lifetime commitment that our society sadly undervalues. Mothers (and fathers) receive little preparation to meet parenting challenges. It’s not surprising that many mothers believe they have to do it all and end up feeling drained. Embarking on the journey into motherhood with a positive and informed approach can have far reaching benefits. As a Mothering Coach, I work with expectant and new moms, babies and children. I offer body awareness sessions based on each parent’s needs. I advise my clients to make themselves a priority, too, like airline safety warnings to ‘Put your oxygen mask on first before putting it on your child.’ You can’t solve your child’s problems when you are stressed and upset. By self-regulating, you teach your child to do the same. Somatic resourcing tips include:

Self-calm Take a moment to relax tense muscles. Calm yourself before responding to upset children. Imagine this as a dial-down procedure. You’ll deactivate your and your child’s upset feelings.

Breathe Take some long, slow breaths. Feel your breath flowing, smoothly and evenly.

Check-in Go inside and identify your feelings. Look 28

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Spring 2015

for anxiety, fear and frustration. Accept your feelings and acknowledge them to your child.

Ground Feel your feet touching the ground and establish your authority.

Slow down Pause inside yourself and slow your pace.

Lighten-up Be in playful flow and let go of grown-up thoughts.

Move Take a walk, do yoga, exercise or dance.

Laugh Keep your sense of humor.

Touch Give and receive hugs.

Be present Stay in the moment. Mothering is enjoyable and rewarding when you take care of yourself by cultivating selflove, a sense of physical ease, and grounded well-being.

Bodies Talk; Who is Listening? by Dr. Tom Gargiula Within moments of getting out of bed in the morning, our bodies are communicating with us: are we well-rested? Do our muscles and joints move with ease? How spry and energetic do we feel? Do we have mental clarity? Often, our bodies say, “Ouch, oh my we are sore, stiff, achy, tired, and foggy.” We want to dive back under the covers for more sleep. It’s critical to listen to your body’s messages. If you do not like what your body is telling you, there are myriad ways to respond. Many people choose to lower the volume on the conversation by taking medication to numb the senses. Others recognize something is wrong and respond by visiting a primary care doctor. “Doc, I just don’t feel right. Things are not working like they used to.” It’s important to note if your doctor listens or simply prescribes medication to reduce or mask symptoms. Ideally, you discuss the underlying issues contributing to how you feel.

The way the body communicates is through a network that connects the brain and body. Your body needs to listen to your brain so it knows what to do; your brain needs to hear from the body so it knows everything is functioning properly. This network is your nervous system. All nerves come from the brain stem at the base of the head. If there is interference with your nervous system, especially in the brain stem, your body can’t effectively communicate. This obstruction will lead to a breakdown of functions, symptoms, disease, and lower life quality. At Windmill Chiropractic we listen, understand patients’ health concerns and the nervous system. We help patients formulate action plans to increase their quality of life. Dr. Tom Gargiula is a doctor of chiropractic and owner of Windmill Chiropractic Wellness Center, located at 9717 Landmark Pkwy, Ste. 216, Sunset Hills. April Means Free Yoga Classes at New Wildwood Studio

& WELLNESS

Wildwood Yoga & Wellness, a new yoga studio opening March 30, will offer free classes in April. Situated on New College Ave in Wildwood, they offer gentle classes for beginners and more vigorous classes for advanced students who want to develop their practice. For cyclists, runners and hikers, there are classes for performance improvement as well as injury prevention. Studio owner and teacher, Jill Dunlap, says they will soon offer classes for kids to develop yoga skills and create healthy living mindsets. by ??? “We want studio guests to experience diverse yoga styles and a variety of teachers to understand our broad offerings. The free classes throughout April will be the perfect opportunity to test the waters,” says Dunlap. Visitors will find the studio welcoming with calm, meditative blue walls and cool light fixtures. It’s not only a place to practice the art of yoga, but a place to unwind. Dunlap adds, “While the teachers will help students increase their strength and flexibility, the environment allows yogis to relax and free their conscious.”

636-541-2424 | 17237 New College Ave., Wildwood MO | www.wwyogastl.com

When Dunlap returned to St. Louis from California 11 years ago, she missed the quality and accessibility of yoga she adopted in her west coast beach town. She relinquished the corporate world a year ago to open the Wildwood studio. Her vision is to create a community where people can find yoga, meditation, bodywork and connect with others focused on wellness. Dunlap’s teacher training started in 2001 in California then in 2007 she embraced Anusara yoga, a flowing yoga style that focuses on alignment. She spent years traveling the U.S., Costa Rica, and India learning from experts in yoga and philosophy as she amassed more than 500 hours of teacher training. For the past five years, Dunlap has brought that knowledge and experience to her St. Louis area yoga teachings. Wildwood Yoga & Wellness has ten core teachers with hundreds of hours of training and unique experiences that they bring to their class offerings. “This makes me confident we’ll provide something for everyone,” says Dunlap.

Bikram Yoga Studio - Chesterfield

New Owner - New Floor - Let's Sweat! by Stacy Hunsicker A few years ago, I interviewed a student of the Bikram - Chesterfield studio for our feature story, Men on the Mat. I recall it vividly, as he was relatively new to yoga, but extremely excited to soon be heading to Bikram Yoga teacher training. This impressed me, as I had been practicing many years and was no where near ready for that kind of commitment; 90 minutes, 105 degrees, twice a day for 9 weeks. His enthusiasm about the ways his yoga practice improved his life was contagious. As an aviation mechanic suffering aches and pains from his profession, yoga relieved his hands and body from frequent twists and turns as he squeezed into tight airplane spaces. Through yoga, he felt better physically and his energy skyrocketed. Fast-forward three years: I just learned that Bikram - Chesterfield has a new owner. Turns out, it is Jeff Bussbee, the Men on the Mat interviewee from a few years prior. I wasn’t surprised by this news, as I recalled his passion for the practice. It is wonderful when one follows a passion and makes it a livelihood. Though not always easy, it is very fulfilling. When I travel and consult with spas, I practice a variety of yoga series. However, when I’m home and in my daily routine, the Bikram series

34

is my go-to practice. Ancient sweat lodge ceremonies with flash heat that can reach upwards of 150 degrees holds a real appeal. Saunas and steam rooms are like magnets to me as well. The heat is detoxifying, cleansing and allows for deeper flexibility. The sweat provides an ease for slipping into and out of certain poses. Whatever the origin and whoever the founder of your go-to yoga variety, the teacher in front of you becomes your guide. So often, gurus in various industries fall from their pedestals. Their tumble doesn’t detract from having brought something transforming to the world. Most people in history books were in some way a tad integritychallenged. As Marilyn Monroe observed, “Well-behaved women rarely make history.” Check out the new ownership and new floor at Bikram Yoga Chesterfield. Spa

It’s a little before sunset, and as we make our way toward the ocean, we can’t imagine what’s in store for us. Chaise lounges have been set up in a semi-circle facing the water. Sitting next to each seat, there’s a large wooden bucket and, on a small table, two glasses of wine. As we move to sit, spa attendants gently take each of our hands and tell us to step into the bucket, which we find to be filled with grapes and a bit of oil. As we mush around in the oily juice, Francisco Lugo, manager of the SOMMA Wine Spa at Cabo’s Fiesta Americana resort, explains that this mashing of the grapes is the first step of our reflexology treatment. “These grapes were grown here in the Baja and are rich in antioxidants,” he says. “By crushing them, you’re releasing their essence. The seeds and skins will work together with the oil to exfoliate and soften the skin.” Once we’ve done all we can to the grapes, we’re invited to relax in the chaises for a 30-minute reflexology session. Although reflexology feels like a fabulous foot massage, the benefits actually run deeper. Reflexology is a therapy based on the principle that there are small and specific reflex areas in the hands and feet that correspond to specific muscle groups or organs of the body. Correctly massaging these areas can alleviate symptoms present in other parts of the body. Even without knowing a client’s specific health issues, an experienced reflexologist can use the practice to increase circulation to the lower extremities and reduce tension. Re-entry into the world after a spa session is never fun, but a tasting of wines made from the same grapes that had been used on our feet, certainly softened the blow, as did dinner set up next to the crashing waves.

Lunch – and a lesson – on the farm

Los Cabos has a secret hidden with its sandy desert: a lush oasis where organic farmers have set up shop and are growing bushels of lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, herbs and other delights all year round. After a couple of wrong turns, we found ourselves at of Huerta Los Tamarindos, an organic restaurant that Enrique Silva opened in 2011 as a way to use the produce he’d been growing since creating the farm in 2002. “It

took awhile to get everything right,” he explained. “We had to find the right fertilizers, insect repellents (they use neem oil, garlic juice and mustard) and varietals so we’d have a constant supply.” Housed in a 19th century brick hacienda, the restaurant overlooks the farm’s 14 acres—and more than 100 varieties--of vegetables, herbs, flowers and fruit trees, all of which are used in the restaurant and bar. Although we could have pulled up a chair and ordered from a menu that featured salad made from greens and beets grown on the farm to pizza, ceviche and shrimp tacos, we chose to work for our lunch and registered for the day’s cooking class. After chopping a mountain of marjoram, thyme, rosemary and other aromatics for an herb-infused oil (which we learned could be used for everything from vinaigrette dressing to the base of a sauce or marinade), we moved to the bar, where we transformed mashed botanicals into fabulous margaritas with the addition of ice, tequila and a dash of simple syrup. The winner was pink basil margarita, which got its pretty hue and intoxicating aroma from red basil. Second place went to the mango version, which put the farm’s bounty of honeyed orbs to wonderful use. After our margarita break, it was back to the outdoor kitchen, where we blended vegetables for gazpacho, chopped tomatoes for the Veracruz sauce that would top our sautéed local snapper and measured out milk for a baked rice accompaniment. Lunch, which also included a salad made from greens harvested minutes before they hit the plate, was served on an antique wooden table on the restaurant’s breezy porch, accompanied by wine and fresh lemongrass tea.

Where to stay

Hotels and resorts line Cabo’s 20-mile coastline; for a laid-back experience, head to Hotel El Ganzo, a 72-room boutique hotel that opened about a year ago a few miles east of San Jose del Cabo in Puerto Los Cabos. Industrial-chic rooms have rough-hewn wood details, concrete floors and ocean views; there’s also a rooftop pool and concert venue overlooking the harbor and Sea of Cortez. Downstairs, a full-service spa offers a number of treatments, many of which utilize local flowers like stimulating damiana (it’s said to be an aphrodisiac), clays, arroyo stones and minerals to detoxify, exfoliate and balance. There’s even a treatment that includes smudging, an ancient ceremony administered with burned herbs to drive out negative feelings. Although the hotel doesn’t have direct beach access, a water shuttle makes the 5 minute trip to the private beach club several times a day. The hotel is also within biking distance of Wirikuta Cactus Botanical Park, a meditative park inspired by Huichol culture where 1500 species of cactus and nearly a million plants are set geometric patterns around three stone pyramids, and the Sculpture Garden at Puerto Los Cabos. As we strolled through the hotel, it was hard not to notice the fabulous modernist paintings that hung on the walls; turns out that El Ganzo has an artist-in-residence program for both visual artists and musicians. Several times during the year, artists of various mediums are invited to the hotel to create in the art studio, perform on the roof and record at the hotel’s state-of-the-art recording studio. The creative vibe is working: in July, Adam Levine, front man for Maroon 5, booked the hotel for his wedding party. Yoga & Spa Magazine • Spring 2015

Restaurant Rave

Balaban's Parties On! Balaban’s fish tacos tingle and melt across the palate. The cool, crispness of the cucumber bisque slides down producing a sensation of freshness. As the weather warms, tender stalks of spring asparagus and chewy ovals of dark and dusty lattice-webbed morels highlight Balaban’s dishes on the restaurant menu and for catering events in house and at other venues. The restaurant, wine store, gift and catering operation opened in Chesterfield five and a half years ago after closing in the Central West End where St. Louisans celebrated the good times and the tastes of Balaban’s for more than 35 years. Balaban’s panache and the signature dishes—such as beef Wellington, cucumber bisque, pasta Ligurian and morel mushroom pasta—moved to Chesterfield with them. Now, those dishes and more highlight catered parties in the Balaban’s event space and weddings and other events which they cater off site. After the move to Chesterfield with Executive Chef D. Scott Phillips managing the kitchen, Balaban’s earned more than 30 awards and designations for their food and wine including one as a best restaurant from St. Louis Magazine and three best of awards of excellence from the international Wine Spectator magazine, a feat which trumps the original Café Balaban®. This acclaim led to an expansion in 2012 when Balaban’s owners, Steve McIntyre and Brian Underwood, renovated and pushed into more than 2, 000 square feet of adjacent space vacated by two other businesses at their Clarkson and Baxter location.

The additional space now houses an intimate Wine Room which seats eight for dinner and cellars, floor to ceiling around the walls, more than $350,000 of the restaurant’s famed Library Wines from the original Café Balaban®. A larger Tuscan inspired event space accommodates 80 for dinner or 100 for cocktails. Co-owner McIntyre said he likes the weddings best, but he does not cry. “With Chef D. Scott’s catering expertise, we book events and parties in house and elsewhere. Here we’ve had weddings, rehearsal dinners, corporate events of all kinds, surprise birthday parties, even baby showers. “Our larger party space with its mirrored French doors, some of which conceal intriguing wine barrel ends mounted on the wall, lends itself chameleon-like to varied events while small parties slip into the intimate Wine Room with a dedicated server, a special menu and the most intriguing ambiance in the city,” McIntyre said. As for the wines—all sold at competitive retail prices with only an $8 corkage for drinking in house—McIntyre described the depth of the cellar which ranges, as an example, from a $960 Library Wine with a sketched label that could hang in an art museum to half of the wine inventory priced under $20 a bottle. Balaban’s excels, he said, at pairing food and wine. The winner of Balaban’s “Uncork the Memories” contest, Michelle Keesal, may best have described the Balaban’s aura. Her contest entry last fall told in detail of a 1980’s dinner of beef Wellington at Balaban’s with her date, “what’s his name.” Yoga & Spa Magazine • Spring 2015

Turning “I Should” into “I Want” by Alison Allman and Gayle Wilson Rose We all know we should exercise regularly. We should eat healthy food. The problem with shoulds is they are rooted in guilt and negativity, neither of which are effective for sustainable behavior change. Success comes when we link our desire to change with a deeply held value. Finding that value and tying it to a positive, life-affirming reason to lose weight, for example, creates a motivation that can push us through inevitable temptations. People as diverse as opera singers and athletes engage coaches to help them improve and succeed. Coaches help clients discover their strengths, strategize around obstacles, and find the inspiration to be the best they can be. As health coaches, we encourage clients to shift from a carrot/stick mentality to developing a mindset that changes how they perceive themselves. “I can do this, and I want to do this, because I’m the kind of person who behaves this way.” As our clients begin to see themselves as healthy, they make lifestyle choices that evolve into lasting change. When you work with a coach, you are accountable for your actions. You learn to take responsibility for your choices, and, as

You always have a choice. Choose well. a result, experience empowerment. Your confidence soars. Key questions to ask yourself include: Is my life in a balanced state? Am I happy, optimistic, energetic, and strong? Am I satisfied with my body? Do I have stamina for a walk in a park with my grandchild or friend? Do I feel confident and proud of my appearance when I enter a room? If you’re not your best self, consider partnering with Pyramid Coaches to become a champion of your own life. Make a Lasting Life Shift with Spirituality Bootcamp™:

The Seven Steps of Spiritual Practice by Kristen White and John Schwab Our patterns of automatic living run deep. Years of repetitive internal thoughts, imbedded emotions, subconscious beliefs from childhood and past relationships create a deep internal, patterned response to the way we perceive our lives and how we take action— or not — every day. Even with the best resolutions in place to invite change, after 60 to 90 days of effort, we often find ourselves back where we started. Many of us wait for lightening to strike. We harbor a vague expectation that something external will interfere and break the cycle of mediocrity that encircles us. Something will happen unexpectedly to change our lives: an accident, a divorce, a diagnosis. In light of devastating news, we discover motivation and fear to drive our lives toward a new destination. But, it does not have to be dramatic. The lightening required is a flash of internal light which illuminates awareness for a moment, just enough to open us to a sense of inner peace and possibility. In this internal sanctuary of awareness, we find more space, less noise and an ability to listen where we can truly discover what is next for us—one step at a time.

place for much of our lives. This is what we mean when we say we are stuck. When we add light to our darkness, the emotions, fear and traumas start to dissolve and lose their hold. We enlighten ourselves, or lighten-up, by following Spirituality Bootcamp™ and repeating the following seven exercises on a daily basis: Sacred Space: Identify a place at home or work that you can devote to a daily spiritual practice. Meditation: Take a few moments each day for stillness and a quiet mind. Forgiveness: Let go and release pain, resentment and anger. Gratitude: Embrace the good things that are happening right now. Visualization: See yourself as already achieving what you desire to manifest. Affirmation: Say positive statements about yourself. Be conscious of your words and remove negativity. Prayer: Connect daily to a higher power. Prayer can produce miracles. With regular practice, we can raise our vibration, nourish our spirit and connect to our divine purpose.

Our soul’s whisper is always communicating, yet it requires our attention to be discovered and heard. It makes no difference if you are Methodist, Buddhist, Catholic, Agnostic or Atheist. As human beings, we are dark and dense, clogged with emotions, fear, trauma and habits that can keep us standing in the same 46

Photo 2 shows another simple pant and jacket, but with clean lines, light blue shirt and solid pocket square for a classic, yet fun look.

We are always drawing attention to ourselves… but what kind of attention do we want? In three short seconds, style makes an impression of you. Finding your individual style is as simple as looking in your closet and focusing on what you like: bold colors, stripes, plaids, clean lines, basic colors (grey, brown, black, blue, white) denim, khaki, trousers, ties, pocket squares, shoes. Everything else is in how the clothes are styled or worn. As shown in photo 1, a simple pant and jacket can be styled with a bold shirt and pocket square for a creative, fun look.

If a look in your closet makes you realize you need to update your wardrobe to create your ideal style, here are some essentials additions to consider: *Suits – solid navy, solid grey, tan herringbone or twill *Sport Coat – Navy, tan multi-check, grey mini-glen plaid *Trousers – charcoal grey, navy, brown, khaki chino, designer jeans *Shirts – 4 solid white, 4 solid blue, 3 stripes, 3 checks *Polos – variety in pattern and colors *Shoes and belts – 3 dress shoes and matching belts (black, brown, English) and 3 dressy-casual shoes (monk straps, loafers, desert boots) *Accessories – 4 ties, 3 pocket squares, dressy watch and casual watch. By building your wardrobe with these essentials, you will be able to mix n’ match, go from work to play and style to reflect your personality. 5 Styling Tips These tips will help you create your own look and exude confidence. 1 – Proper-fitting clothes are most important. Critical, really. 2 – Wear dark, more fitted denim. This creates a nice, clean look and pairs well. 3 – A fitted shirt/polo tucked-in with dark denim, wide leather belt, matching monk straps, desert boots, or lace-ups creates an easy-going, yet confident look. 4 – Pay attention to the details of your clothes. Properly rolled-sleeves and a wellironed shirt speak volumes. 5 – Always add a pocket square when wearing a blazer/sport coat; whether a simple solid or bold paisley, this accessory adds polish. Taking time to learn a bit about fashion, trends and styling pays-off in your professional and personal life. Above all, dress well to reflect your personality and express confidence. Yoga & Spa Magazine • Spring 2015

After spending much of the winter inside, it’s time to celebrate the arrival of spring. The winter set the stage for our growth and recalibration. It’s important we stay connected to the energy of the change of seasons. Utilizing ancient technologies and traditions, the Elemental Wheel, spring represents the energy of wood. It signifies motion and can feel strong, aggressive and pushy. Imbalanced energy within ourselves can have negative consequences. There are several ways to bring this energy into balance so we feel positive and productive. One simple way to avoid imbalances: Take a deep breath and quiet yourself. Take your thumb and first two fingers in a 3-finger notch, place them underneath each breast in the middle of the bra line. Keep breathing deeply, telling yourself, “All is well.” Once you are quiet and calm, think about the decision to be made. Pay attention to how that feels in your body, especially in the center. Note if you feel

excited or calm or if the action feels uncomfortable or heavy. Take a few more breaths until the feeling is very clear in your body. This is a very simple, yet effective way of decision-making. It facilitates the use of powerful intuitive skills that are present in each of us. With this technique, you can discern what serves you and your family and what does not. By tuning into this feeling, you can choose to act on those decisions that inspire you and avoid feeling overwhelmed. There can be a small difference between feeling excited (outside the box thinking) and feeling discomfort (not of service to me or my family). Following your inner guidance with inspired action is one way to bring more balance, calm and peace into life. by Daniel Lacroix Blessings come in many forms. The gift of intuition, gentleness and caring for others is a blessing for which I am most thankful. A few years ago, I was blessed to meet Gloria Coppola, a well-known Lomi Lomi instructor, healer and mentor. This humble, beautiful and loving Hawaiian healing art changed my life and my practice as a massage therapist. Lomi Lomi is the art and essence of loving and conscious touch. It goes deeper than traditional western techniques. Its rhythm and flow soothe and bless the body on a cellular level. Lomi transforms lives and is much more than a technique. It is a part of every massage modality I offer in my practice and is foundational in my daily life. It is defined by being present for the healing of those who seek help. A Lomi massage is a two-and-half hour session that takes you into a state of deep physical and emotional relaxation and for many people is a spiritual experience. Clients say they feel as though they have been nurtured and massaged by ocean waves. For 90 minutes prior to clients arriving for their Lomi massage, I create a sacred healing place through meditation and prayer, along with incense and healing oils. Y&S Interview

Trekking the Spirit World with John Schwab We recently spent some time getting to know St. Louis Shaman John Schwab.

Y&S: What’s it like to be a shaman in our modern times?

Y&S: How do you assist someone in moving forward in life?

JS: I grew up in a small, rural farming area. After college, I landed in St. Louis and worked for 20 years in banking and real estate. Volunteering and fundraising became a source of fulfillment for me as it satisfied my craving for a sense of purpose. Then I met my wife, Kristen White, who introduced me to many different spiritual modalities and paths. I transitioned from a rigid life of fear and minimal creativity to living a more creative-centered life. At age 50, I made a complete lifestyle change.

JS: I face fear, the same fears we all have. However, knowing how to harness that I easily move through life issues, observe, assess and go through them rather than engaging, obsessing or getting mired in them. I practice weekly rituals and ceremonies with the shamans I trained with, stay in a good space and assist others in their healing and growth. I love working with clients. I get as much joy and reward by seeing them grow and thrive as they do. What I give, I get back.

Y&S: What does your profession look like today?

Y&S: What was your path to becoming a shaman?

JS: Today I am proud to say I am a shaman— a healer. I say that with the broadest of definition though, as I’ve found we become trapped by judgments and self-defined roles. As we free ourselves, we find freedom to become who we are destined to be.

JS: I spent a month working with the shamans in Peru. Specifically, the Inka Q’ero of the High Andes where we practiced daily ceremonies. Also, I have done course work with the Four Winds Society and call upon those lineage rights that go back more than 50,000 years. Essentially, I work to bridge the gap between ancient energy traditions and Western ways which people are more accustomed. That’s where our modern office in Clayton, Missouri, comes into play.

JS: During an intake session, we identify the real issues in their life-- what they want to change. We assess and bring the emotions forward then begin to work with the subconscious to release and heal. I assist clients in letting go and learning to forgive. I help them release roles and judgments that get placed on us by ourselves and others. Too often, we act and behave as others expect us to as opposed to being who we are. I help clients learn to trust themselves and their instincts. It’s common to dismiss our imagination and real thoughts, but so often they are right. Living with intention and making corrective actions can become a wonderful life path when you have someone guide you along the way. That is what I do for clients.

Y&S: Tell us about yourself, John.
